NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM

_________________________________________________________________________________ EARLY CHILDHOOD CHATTER (KINDERGARTEN AND PLAYGROUP) Well excitement is growing in the kindergartens as the children are painting eggs and making Easter baskets – Easter is coming. Each evening we will be watching the moon grow bigger and bigger and then when it is full in the sky we know that the following Sunday is Easter Sunday. How wonderful to be watching and waiting for the moon to let us know when the time is right and what a lovely thing to do together with your child before bedtime each evening in the lead up to Easter. The Early Childhood Easter Festival will be celebrated on the last day of term – Thursday 2nd April at 11am. Please bring a picnic blanket and a picnic morning tea to share with your child. After the picnic there will be a very special Easter story for everyone to enjoy. Kindergarten finishes for all children after the Festival – There is no Kindy Care after the Festival. Celebrating Festivals helps the children to make sense of the world. Repeating the same celebration each year puts a structure in place around which they can remember their childhood experiences. Unsure what to do? I offer some information and ideas as suggestions and without any expectation that you will use any of them. They are merely a starting point, if that is what you are looking for.

Research the meaning of Easter, where it comes from, what it symbolises

Remember that we aim to bring truth and beauty to young children, so focusing on the crucifixion is

inappropriate. Instead we focus on the renewal and rebirth of life, the wonder of the resurrection or the

Michael qualities of Courage, Strength and Velour. If religion is not high up there, then nature can provide

inspiration.

In Australia Easter usually coincides with the coming of autumn, when the trees, whose leaves have wilted and

fallen seem to regenerate almost overnight. Creeks that have not flowed for months begin to fill, insects thrive

and the bush returns to its glory. This year is a little different, with much native vegetation struggling to survive

Eggs are an ancient symbol of eternal life. They are dormant but contain new life. So their symbolism

transcends the Christian story. The yolk in the egg can be a picture of the light in the darkness. Many of the

Easter stories have this theme at their heart.

The story of the Easter Hare. The Hare (rather than the Easter bunny) exemplifies Christ like qualities. It is very

stoic, it never cries unless it is dying, it is nomadic, so is nowhere and yet everywhere. It is wide eyed, alert and

upright in its stance and has many predators but attacks no one. It will sacrifice itself to save its companions.

If we as humans could begin to live as the hare, how different the world might be. Is it any wonder that the

hare is a symbol of spirituality in other religions as well?

The tree is symbolic of a yearning for a higher being. The trunk represents the connection between earth and

heaven or the universe, and the branches are symbolic of the steadiness of the earth. For there to be balanced

both qualities are needed. The spiritual world and flowing life of the earth are in harmony. The tree of life with

its three branches can also be seen as a symbol of ‘three foldness’

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM cont.. In ancient Egypt red was the colour of the Sun God Ra. For Christmas it is symbolic of the blood of Christ. Easter

is one of the few times where red might be used on a kindergarten nature table.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. The research can be never ending. The important thing is that we, the adults do the research, and use what knowledge we have and what rings true for us, and it doesn’t matter how little it is, to bring some of that meaning to our young children through our ACTIONS. WE DO NOT SHARE OUR RESEARCH WITH OUR CHILDREN. Having our knowledge behind what we DO with our children is what brings meaning to our children. They do not need to engage intellectually. They need to ACT. The preparation of the Festival is as important as the actual celebration. Making dough for hot cross buns is more important than eating them. The painting of the eggs is more important than their actual beauty. The bushwalk to find a suitable branch and the arranging of an Easter/ autumn table is as important as the finished display. Here’s how to set one of these up:

1. Find an interesting shaped twig or branch with some side branches for hanging eggs on.

2. Find a big jar and mostly fill it with sand or soil and stick the branch in it.

3. Wrap a pretty cloth around the jar and hang your painted eggs from the branches.

4. Lay a red cloth around the base. Perhaps make a knitted or felt rabbit or just lay

some leaves around, or something else that means Easter/Autumn to you.

5. As soon as your child stats to flick an egg as she/he walks by, the reverence and

wonder for the process has gone and it is time to take it down!

Overheard at the morning tea table Child 1 – The Easter Bunny must be magic Child 2 – It must come down from Heaven Child 3 – No it follows a bunny trail – I know about the Easter Bunny Child 4 – Well I saw it at the airport and I shook its hand, it was pink and green.

KOORRDJENANGIN NEWS A warm thank you to Peter Grant and Marijanna Smith who took time out of their busy lives to visit the Koorrdjenangin Class recently, who were immersed in a main lesson on geography and mapping. Peter and Marijanna spoke about just how much work was put into the planning process before our current school was built. Peter, Marijanna and a small group of others including Karen Brown, Bruce Lee and Ben Avery spent a very long time observing the land and thinking about the best place for all the many buildings we have at our school. Peter even brought along his two theodolites to show the class how surveying is done. Thank you Peter and Marijanna - your visit was really inspiring! Anna and the Koorrdjenangin

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM cont.. LIGHTKEEPERS NEWS (GEMS) The Lightkeepers learn first-hand how to farm wheat “To dig the ditch; to plough the land; to this the farmers turn their hand; To sow the seed; to hoe and weed; to grow good food for beast and man, the farmers work as best they can” (Excerpts from Silver Tree’s gardening lesson verse)

In class three, Steiner students immerse themselves in an agriculture main lesson. At Silver Tree, students benefit from a rich experiential learning experience as part of their weekly gardening lessons in the form of growing their own wheat crop.

In week one, our keen, (and very strong) Lightkeepers lugged dead branches from the bush to form a wheat field, and yielding a pick axe, hoes and spades set to work digging and loosening a large area of compacted soil. This hard work was undertaken with much enthusiasm.

In week two, there was more digging; rocks were carried to provide more support to the perimeter of the wheat field and last year’s composited leaves and good quality soil was added to one third of the field.

After the foundations and the soil is in place, the Lightkeepers will have the privilege of hand sowing their very own wheat seeds; caring for their crop and watching it grow, and harvesting their own wheat. Their main lesson will culminate in hand-grinding their own wheat to make their own yummy bread. How lucky are they?!

WAYFARERS NEWS

Currently in the throes of rediscovering Ancient Rome, we began by looking at the bravery, treachery and somewhat surprisingly, the peacefulness and piety that the 7 kings brought to Rome over time. We will continue to learn about some of the happenings and characters that contributed to the rise and fall of the great empire, as well as the geography and lifestyle of the Roman people. The children are being exposed to a range of writing styles as they read, learn and listen to parts of epic poetry from the likes of Virgil and Ovid and prose from Livy. We are particularly enjoying learning the poem of brave Horatius at the Bridge from The Lays of Ancient Rome by Macaulay. I know that some parents are hearing it being recited at home and have been surprised at just how much the children can remember!. Last year we began to learn it and we performed an excerpt at assembly and open day. As we have found our way through the kingdom of Rome we now clearly hold the picture of the bravery of Horatius and his two comrades as they held the bridge in the face of the Tuscan army, who were “right glorious to behold”. The image of the army was held in our minds as we marched in the tight formation of a (small) Roman legion to pace out a roman mile. We ran out of room, but will go further this week to see just how far a Roman mile is. The children have been begging me to let them do a project. I have succumbed and they are so busy with their heads in the books finding out about their chosen topic to share with us next week. It is lovely to see such enthusiasm for

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM cont.. their learning, to hear them share what they are discovering, remembering what they read yesterday and diligently writing it down in their practice books ready to put into their “projects”. We have been learning to speak a little Latin and will look at how it has changed over time from classical Latin to ecclesiastical Latin to English as we know it today. The children are becoming aware of the influence of the ancient language in our everyday writing which helps with spelling and understanding the meaning of some unfamiliar words we come across from time to time. Latin has been surprisingly easy to learn to pronounce, but of course we don’t know what it all means. Thank goodness for translations! We are also singing some lovely songs in Latin and the Wayfarers are finding their voices and confidence in such a small group to make some beautiful music….thank you Julia!! Stay well and enjoy this cooler weather Warm regards, Megan

The club is for anyone in class two and upwards who would like to have a non-competitive run in the middle of the day. If your child is keen to come along please ensure they have their trainers on Tuesdays. We will be running and jogging (with the occasional walking to catch our breaths!) for fun and fitness!

MATERNITY CLOTHES DONATIONS PLEASE

No one likes forking out money for a whole new wardrobe for nine months of wear - so as a Silver Tree Community initiative, I'd like to start a maternity clothes swap box for all our pregnant Mammas. It will work on donations solely - and be available for mums to take and return as they require. At this point in time, I'm putting a friendly call out to everyone to go through their wardrobes and donate any maternity clothes to the collection. All sizes, colours and styles will be greatly appreciated. Even if you had something that wasn't technically maternity wear, but you found comfortable while you were pregnant, we would love! Please place your donations in the box in the front office. Any queries please feel free to phone me on 0419934557. Kristy Brookes - Mothers' Group Facilitator

Goodbye, math and history: Finland wants to abandon teaching subjects at school

Finland already has one of the best school education systems, but the country is not resting on its laurels. By Kabir Chibber

Finland already has one of the best school education systems. It always ranks near the top in mathematics, reading, and science in the prestigious PISA rankings (the 2012 list, pdf) by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Teachers in other countries flock to its schools to learn from a country that is routinely praised as just a really, really wonderful place to live.

But the country is not resting on its laurels.

Finland is considering its most radical overhaul of basic education yet—abandoning teaching by subject for teaching by phenomenon. Traditional lessons such as English Literature and Physics are already being phased out among 16-year-olds in schools in Helsinki.

Instead, the Finns are teaching phenomena—such as the European Union, which encompasses learning languages, history, politics, and geography. No more of an hour of history followed by an hour of chemistry. The idea aims to eliminate one of the biggest gripes of students everywhere: “What is the point of learning this?” Now, each subject is anchored to the reason for learning it.

Pasi Silander, Helsinki’s development manager, says the world has changed with the spread of technology and many of the old ways of teaching have no practical purpose.

“Young people use quite advanced computers,” he told the Independent.

“In the past the banks had lots of bank clerks totting up figures but now that has totally changed.”

Many teachers in Finland, many of whom have been teaching single subjects their whole careers, oppose the changes. It is not hard to see why. The new system is much more collaborative, forcing teachers from different areas to come up with the curriculum together.

Marjo Kyllonen, Helsinki’s education manager and the person responsible for reforming the system in the capital, calls this “co-teaching” and teachers who agree to it get a small bonus on top of their salaries.

Kyllonen told the Independent: “There are schools that are teaching in the old fashioned way which was of benefit in the beginnings of the 1900s—but the needs are not the same and we need something fit for the 21st century.”

Later this month, she is proposing that the new system is rolled out across the whole country by 2020.

Will the rest of the world follow the Finns’ lead?
