The Hills of Lakeway MessengerKeeping Central Texas Kids Warm for 22 Years

Submitted by Amber Brabham with The Junior League of Austin

Coat donations may be dropped off at your neighborhood Jack Brown Cleaners from November 10 until December 3. There is a need this year to collect “warmer” winter coats. These might include ski coats, wool coats, heavy down or parkas. If you are interested in getting your family, neighbors and co-workers involved, consider organizing a coat drive.

For more information on School and Community Coats Dives contact the Coat Drive Coordinator at [email protected] or call 512.467.8982 ext 294.

Coats for Kids also urges the community to donate their time during sorting week (December 1 – 5) or on distribution day which will be held at the Palmer Events Center on Saturday, December 6. Volunteers must be at least 15 years of age during sorting week

For 22 years, Coats for Kids has provided for hundreds of thousands of Central Texas children in need of a warm winter coat. Coats for Kids is an annual Junior League of Austin community project that collects and distributes warm winter coats to eligible children and teenagers in the Central Texas area.

Each year, The Junior League of Austin, Jack Brown Cleaners, KASE 101 and KVUE partner to organize and facilitate the details of the project in an effort to bring the community together to ensure that the children of Central Texas stay warm. Last year approximately 28,000 coats were donated by the community and distributed to children in Central Texas. In order to make sure we have plenty of coats this winter, we need your help in collecting and donating.

Holiday Pet TipsSubmitted by Melissa Todd

As you celebrate the season, it’s important to keep your furry friends safe and stress-free. Household changes and activity can be very hard on pets.

• Be careful with holiday decorations. Many plants and berries (poinsettias, mistletoe, ivy and holly to name a few) can be toxic to pets. Also be careful where you hang ornaments and decorations…the higher the better!

• Gatherings of people and holiday parties can frighten animals. Plan a safe place for them to retreat too when company arrives or when Halloween doorbells are ringing.

• Holiday leftovers can wreak havoc with your pet’s digestive system. This is especially true with older pets. Turkey drippings, poultry bones and chocolate can all result in a trip to the emergency vet.

Central Texas Selected for Nationwide Study of Gasoline Tax Alternative

Participants receive $895 just to drive like they normally would.

To be considered, a person must be a U.S. citizen, age 18 years or older, live in the five county Austin/Round Rock Metro Area and plan to reside in the area for at least the next 10 months—trips outside the area are not restricted. The person must own a personal automobile, have a valid driver’s license, and be able to provide proof of vehicle registration and current insurance. The 200 participants will be selected from people who register online at www.RoadUserStudy.org or via call toll free 1-866-363-1975. Participants will be selected to represent the diverse population of Central Texas.Key Dates:

Residents of these counties can apply from October 13-November 3, 2008. They will be notified by early November if they have been accepted into the study. If they are accepted, they must attend one of four trainings between Nov. 13-15. At that time, they will schedule the installation of the onboard computer at a convenient time between November 17 and December 13, 2008.Who are the Study’s Sponsors:

This national study to evaluate the mileage-based road user charge is designed and conducted by the Public Policy Center at the University of Iowa with funding authorized by the U. S. Congress in the 2005 Highway Bill. Special Audience Marketing Research & Communication has been selected to facilitate the recruitment and training for the five county area. For More Information:

To learn more about the Study or to register to be considered for participation, visit www.RoadUserStudy.org. Or call toll free: 1-866-363-1975.

The gasoline tax has funded the building and maintenance of America’s roads for over 70 years. Many people may not even be aware that their total at the gas pump includes this tax. A national study is being conducted in six different areas in the country to evaluate a new system based on road use. This system could one day replace the gas tax. Drivers are being recruited to help develop and test the best possible system.About the Study:

This Fall, 200 people from the five county Austin/Round Rock Metro Area will be selected to test this new approach to financing the nation’s roadways. The 10-month study will test whether the new approach is user-friendly, secure, trouble-free, cost-effective, and acceptable to drivers. Participants will receive $895 by completing the Study.

The five county Austin/Round Rock area includes Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson counties. How the Study Works:

A specially-trained and experienced technician installs a small on-board computer under the dashboard or the center console of the participant’s car. For the next 8 months, the participant just drives as he/she normally would. The computer combines global positioning data with odometer data to record the number of miles driven in each county and calculates a dollar amount that would be owed if the mileage charge were operational. The system does not affect the car’s performance and there are no permanent marks left on the car after the devise is removed. How to Participate:

increased demand and to decrease response time.

The five-year “Operations Master Plan” identified critical needs, among which are:

• Add 9 Additional Fire Fighters

• Add a 2nd Combination Fire Engine and Ladder truck.

• Remodel, Relocate and Add Fire/EMS Stations.

• Add Fast Response Units for Fires and Medical Emergencies.

Who the Proposition AffectsESD6 covers 200 square miles of Western Travis County including rapidly growing residential com-munities, lakes and undeveloped areas that depend on ESD6 for fire and emergency medical services. The revenue raised would be used to improve emergency services throughout ESD6.

Visitors Would Help Fund ESD6The proposed sales tax would allow people who visit our area to help the department meet the demand to which they contribute.

What You Can DoPlease make your voice heard on this important issue by voting on Tuesday Nov. 4th, 2008.

Area Growth Has Stretched Equipment and Personnel, Creating Slower Response TimesThe continuing growth in west-ern Travis County has greatly increased the demands on ESD6.Those increased demands have resulted in more simultaneous calls and, unfortunately, someslower response times when emergency personnel and equip-ment become stretched too thin.

Fire and EMS emergency calls in ESD6 rose from 1,285 in 2005 to 1,610 in 2006, a 25.29% increase. ALL types of calls responded to rose from 1,755 in 2005 to 2,337 in 2006, a 33.16% increase.

Currently, ESD6’s average life threat-ening emergency, medical response time is 7.42 minutes. ESD6’s goal is to approach the National Fire Protection Association’s standard of 6 minutes.

Funds Prop 1 Will GenerateThe proposed 1% sales tax is expected to produce about $780,000 in new revenue a year to fund our emergency services.

How the Funds Will Be UsedFunds would go to new equip-ment, additional personnel and infrastructure to deal with the

Emergency Services District No. 6 (Lake Travis Fire and Rescue) pro-vides first responder service for fires, accidents, and medical emergencies in western Travis County.

Rapid growth throughout our area is straining the system and increasing response times, which could lead to greater loss of life and property.

Nationally recognized experts in fire and emergency medical services developed a five-year “Operations Master Plan” which identified our critical needs.

Proposition 1 would raise revenue for additional fire fighters, emer-gency medical personnel, equipment, and infrastructure to improve servic-es and provide faster response times throughout ESD6.

Rapid Area Population and Business GrowthDemographic studies project that there will be 10,975 new housing occupancies in Lake Travis ISD between 2007 and 2016, and anoth-er 1,900 in Steiner Ranch by 2015.

It is estimated that more than 114,700 people will move into and along the triangle of land between Hwy 71 and US 290 west of Oak Hill in the next 25 years.

Proposition 1: A One Cent Sales Tax to Help Improve Fire and Emergency Service Response Times to Save More Lives and Protect Property.

Prop 1 Would Provide New Firefighting and EMS Personnel, Trucks, and Infrastructure to Help Protect West Travis County.

Achoo!!!!Submitted by Dr. Tenesha Weine

If you live in Austin and other allergen-laden locales, you are certainly familiar with the outward symptoms of airborne allergies. And if you’ve ever rushed to the bathroom after lunch, you may also be familiar with some food allergies and what they do to you. But did you know that depression can actually be a symptom of an allergy at work in your body? So can muscle aches, joint pain, anger and irritability, even an inability to think clearly. The list of allergy symptoms goes on and on.

The exact cause of allergies isn’t known. Western science defines an allergic reaction as the body’s defense mechanism against an allergen or foreign substance. The body’s immune system takes over in an attempt to protect it. Ironically, your body is making you uncomfortable by fighting what are often benign substances.

Allergies to airborne substances, ragweed, mold, dust, mountain juniper, are often indicative of inflammation somewhere in the GI tract. They are typically secondary to a food allergy that is creating the inflammation.

Some allergens are actually inherited, but these are few. In fact, allergic reactions to soy, peanuts, dairy products, and wheat appear to be the only genetic allergies. Changing the pH and calming the

inflammation of the bowels is the key to reducing or eliminating allergies. While it isn’t an overnight process, the results are worth it-living without sinusitis, itchy watery eyes, headaches, pressure, fatigue, drainage, sinus infections, irritable bowels, spastic colon, diarrhea, and constipation.

You may be shocked to discover how many of your seemingly unrelated symptoms are actually allergies. Other symptoms of allergies include migraines, heartburn, fainting, blood-sugar problems, indigestion, and even mood disorders. Often, depression is actually a result of commonly ingested allergens, and many people find they can reduce or eliminate their need for psychotropic medications by modifying their food intake.

Nature Watchby Jim and Lynne Weber

Another attractive tree is the Mexican Plum, whose dense white flowers appear before the leaves in early spring, and offer a very sweet, heady scent. The plums, which ripen from July to September, are nearly as ornamental as the flowers, as their color varies widely from gold to crimson to purple-black.

Agarita, a common native barberry, is a medium evergreen shrub whose gray-green holly-like leaflets are joined by yellow flowers in February/March and small red fruit in May through July. The leaflets have sharp points at the ends, so care must be taken to harvest the fruit, which makes an excellent jelly. Another sprawling shrub with thorny, woody stems is Southern Dewberry. A bramble common to sunny meadows and open fields, its white flowers bloom in March/April, followed by berries that resemble blackberries but have a more sweet/tart flavor. Usually found climbing along fencerows and high over other plants in woodland edges and stream sides is the Mustang Grape. Best used for wines and jellies, these vines can grow up to 40 feet long, and produce small clusters of acidic berries that ripen in August and September.

Take some time this fall planting season to seek out and add some of these native fruit and berry plants to your landscape. Not only will you be providing food for several species of birds and mammals, but you’ll have the chance to savor a natural treat for yourself, too!

Send your nature-related questions to [email protected] and we’ll do our best to answer them.

Native Fruits & BerriesAmong the key components of any healthy, natural habitat are the

native plants that provide sustenance for wildlife. In Central Texas, there are several species that provide abundant fruits and berries during the warmer months, most are edible for humans as well as wildlife, and now is the perfect time to plant them!

Common in brushy areas, open woodlands, and stony hillsides, the Texas Persimmon is a small tree (8-12 feet) that is moderately deer resistant. Flowering in March/April, this tree has little green leaves and attractive smooth pale reddish-gray bark that peels off to reveal a whiter trunk. The female trees bear 1-inch fruits that turn from green to black as they ripen in late July to September. Texas or Littleleaf Mulberry, also a large shrub or small tree, produces an edible fruit that is small, fleshy, and berry-like. It varies from red to black and ripens in May, although in ideal conditions this tree is known to produce a large quantity of fruits over a longer period of time, providing much needed food for migrating and nesting birds.

Our native Escarpment Black Cherry is a fast-growing, straight-trunked tree with long clusters of white flowers in April/May, followed by small purple-black cherries ripening in August through October. Although impractical for fresh eating, the cherries are used in juices and wines, and the bark was once used in making cough syrup. This deciduous tree is also unique in that it offers stunning yellow fall color.

New Stress Reducer - House Plants Submitted by Dr. Tenesha Weine

House plants look pretty, fill empty spaces on the floor, and reduce stress. That’s right, reduce stress. Being close to house plants makes us feel good. House plants reduce heart rate, blood pressure, and help with skin conductivity. Research has shown that people in planted offices recover from stress more quickly than those in un-planted offices.

No, the nursery with the pink flamingos around the corner from my office did not pay me to write this! It’s true, the effect is seen more significantly in situations where the tasks being performed are repetitive or require only low levels of concentration by improving the air quality and people’s perception of the building.

Think about it, humans were made to be outside in the woods or jungle, not inside of a cubicle with florescent lighting for eight hours. So, plants in the office help remind our cells there is life outside the four walls of our office.

Plants also give employees a sense of nurturing and caring, and is a highly interactive and a satisfying experience as it relates to our innate desire to take care of something else living.

A number of studies also show plants can reduce the incidence of minor health complaints. Planted buildings have less airborne dust and increased humidity and static electricity. This is mainly because plants

are slightly negatively charged compared with their surroundings. This attracts positivity charged dust particles and reduces the number in the air and on the surrounding surfaces.

A Norwegian study, after plants were installed in the trail office, the staff complaints about:

*fatigue was reduced by 30%*dry throats were reduced by

30%*headaches were reduced

by 25%*coughing was decreased

by 40%*skin irritations were reduced by

25%

So go out and buy a beautiful fern, a prayer plant, or a begonia today and feel better in your office!
