Lake Travis Community Library’s favorite storyteller Bernadette Nason returns the library on Thursday,

October 25 at 3:30 p.m. for a special Halloween Story Time. This award-winning actress and comedienne does more than simply recite a

story – she truly performs and engages young people.

“My objective is to offer theatrical pieces that challenge modern audiences to embrace and understand

the human spirit while being completely entertained,” said Nason.

English storyteller Nason tours the U.S. with programs of fabulous traditional stories, adapted from the folklore of cultures from all over the world. Combining creative drama with traditional storytelling, she entertains young people while reminding them of the lessons contained in every classic story. Her Halloween Story Time is a favorite every year.

Later in the month, the library’s annual Pumpkin Parade will take place on Wednesday, October 31 at 10:30 a.m. Meet at the library to sing Halloween songs and read spooky stories, then trick or treat around the shopping center in a Halloween parade. All ages are invited to attend and, of course, costumes

are encouraged!“Last year, some of my favorite costumes were a baby Troll

doll, a grumpy dinosaur, a giraffe, a ladybug, and Tegen the butterfly” said Lake Travis Community Library Director Morgan McMillian. “I can’t wait to see this year’s costumes! This is one of our most popular events of the year.”

Four weekly storytimes, six book clubs, knitting club, memoir writing group, computer help, genealogy group, and more continue in October. Please contact the library at www.laketravislibrary.org and (512) 263-2885 for more information about any of these events. We look forward to

seeing you at the library!

Boris Johnson, 90, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, September 14, 2012, Round Rock, TX. He was born in Riga, Latvia in 1921.

Boris met his wife, Inga, in Germany, and they both immigrated (with their young son, Harald) to the U.S. in 1953.

Even though the young family (soon joined by daughter Karen) was new to this country, Boris' gregarious and likeable personality led him to a long and successful career in the shoe industry. After moving to Austin in 1970, Lakeway in 1989, and upon his retirement, Boris became a beloved substitute teacher at Lake Travis High School until age 84. He also worked parttime for Lakeway City Park greeting visitors. He loved people and he always had a smile or friendly word for everyone.

Boris was a multi-linguist, and he loved practicing and helping anyone with their language skills. He also loved swimming and singing with the Sängerrunde group, the Lakeway Church choir, and the Baca Center singing group. One of his greatest joys was sailing on the windy waters of Lake Travis as a member of the Austin Yacht Club.

Boris made friends wherever he went, and he will be deeply missed by both family and friends alike. Boris is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Inga; son Harald; daughter Karen Inga and

husband Mike; and his grandchildren, Katie and Kira. The family wishes to thank Hearthstone Health Center (Round Rock) for their loving and trusting

care of Boris. A memorial service to honor Boris will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 23rd, at the Palm Valley Lutheran Church, 2500 E. Palm Valley Blvd., Round Rock, Texas.

To share memories of Boris or to send condolences to the family, kindly visit: www.beckchapels.com

The recently founded Lake Travis chapter of the Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) is off to an impressive start to the school year. Instead of logging hours with video games or out on the lake with friends, the YMSL young men have enjoyed many hours this summer helping others. In fact, since the chapter’s induction in May, Lake Travis YMSL members have already logged over 725 hours serving the Lake Travis community and surrounding areas.

Young Men’s Service League is a mother-son organization dedicated to serving communities through philanthropic involvement and community leadership. The young men participate in a four year program of philanthropy, education and leadership. There are nearly 100 members in the new YMSL Lake Travis chapter and over 4,000 members nationwide.

Chapter President Sam Reynolds and mother Brenda Adkinson founded the Lake Travis chapter after moving to the area from Plano where they were actively involved in their local YMSL chapter. “YMSL is a fantastic organization that teaches not only service to others, but also leadership and teamwork to help build strong men of the future,” said founding leader Brenda Adkinson. “We are amazed at what the young men of the Lake Travis area have accomplished in such a short time!”

A few of the charities served so far include Habitat for Humanity, Angel House Soup Kitchen, Foster Angels of Central Texas, Capital Area Food Bank, Mobile Loaves and Fishes, LT Lunches and The Summit at Lakeway.

To learn more about Lake Travis YMSL, visit their website at http://ymsllaketravis.org or like them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/YoungMensServiceLeagueLakeTravisChapter>

“Touch Our World” is the message of the International Christmas Bazaar which will be held on Saturday, November 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a preview event on Friday, November 9, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Lake Travis United Methodist Church. The annual International Christmas Bazaar is a unique shopping experience offering a different way to remember and honor loved ones during the Christmas season, while delivering hope plus a chance for a better way of life to people in communities around the world.

With the Christmas shopping season upon us, here is an opportunity to skip the crowded malls. At the Bazaar you can purchase Christmas gifts that will truly make a difference to people in need. Crafts and jewelry from Ten Thousand Villages and True Vineyard Ministries make wonderful, unique gifts for your friends and family. You can also purchase “shares” of worldwide projects such as livestock, water wells, and mosquito nets.

Bob Dilly says, “I remember buying a beautiful jewelry box that

was handmade in Sri Lanka for my 9 year old niece at a similar bazaar several years ago. She has cherished it for years.”

Every dollar spent at the Bazaar will go outside the Lake Travis church to assist families with clothing, shelter, food, clean water, and education. One hundred percent of the money raised will be spent helping others through the organizations represented by the crafts and shares. To quote an African proverb, “Life is the best gift. Everything else is extra”.

Friday evening, November 9, is a special preview event to enjoy appetizers and refreshments while getting an early chance to purchase gifts. Admission is $5 to the preview event on Friday, 5 to 8 p.m. There is no admission fee on Saturday.

This event is being held in the MAC Building on the campus of Lake Travis United Methodist Church, 1502 RR 620 North (620 at Debba Drive). For more information, contact Marcia Dilly at [email protected] or 512-944-0631.

“We, the people, want a better burger!” This was the cry heard around Bee Cave, Texas…until now. Lakeway’s Shane Street has run a lot of successful restaurants; but recently, Shane and wife, Shannon opened their own place, All Star Burger at the Hill Country Galleria. Just down from Dillard’s, All Star Burger offers your favorite American burgers … with an updated twist. They start with Premium Gold Pure Country Angus Beef. Their cows are fed a 100% vegetarian diet and have never, ever had any artificial growth hormones or antibiotics. They deck out their patties with carefully crafted combinations of gourmet toppings and serve them on locally baked, preservative-free buns. They offer a glutton-free bun alternative, as well as a “skinny style” lettuce-wrapped option.

All Star Burger was inspired by the American spirit of enterprise: the vision, steadfast effort and determination that helped shape this great country. From the beginning, All Star was a family project. “Conceptually, we felt that part of our task was to convey our own family values, and our vision is born of the philosophy that going the extra mile is well worth it,” says Street.

“In the weeks leading up to opening, our family home was a virtual test-kitchen. Our daughters, Kaitlin (14) and Gracee (12), worked along with Shannon and me, concocting our favorite burger combinations and taste profiles. The girls enjoyed the shake testing the most, and they were especially proud when we finally figured out how to translate the flavor of their favorite home-made s’mores into a shake!” laughs Street.

The uncompromising American standards encompass all that All Star offers, including sweet potato fries, turkey

or chicken (depending on what local Robertson Farm has available), tuna and hemp seed vegetarian patties, as well as a variety of farmers market salads made fresh all day. They’re proud to support local farms and vendors in their search for the freshest, healthiest possible ingredients. All Star offers American-sourced beer and wine selections, as well as old-fashioned hand-dipped Blue Bell Creameries Shakes in flavors like Dreamsicle and apple pie. They taste as good as you remember from your childhood ... but better!

“Calling your burger “All Star” is a pretty bold claim, but this new place in the Galleria is living up to its name ...the burgers are big, juicy and already drawing fans. They’re topped several ways, and available in veggie, venison and Ahi tuna options, as well.” (Way out West review)

“The chocolate shake was so rich and thick, we wondered if they forgot to put milk in it. This place is going to be giving other burger joints nightmares.” (The Austin Chronicle)

“Moooove over Hopdoddy! I think I’ve found the best burger in Austin—just a bike ride away from home! We stopped in today for a late lunch and left ecstatic by our experience at All Star. This is exactly the kind of restaurant our area needs. They serve all of their premium, vegetarian- fed Angus burgers on freshly baked buns and top them with appealing and modern toppings, such as arugula, fried eggs, blue cheese and endless other gourmet toppings …What they’ve done well here is keep a simple menu that appeals to every member of the family. The décor is clean, modern and spacious and a great spot for larger parties, with some nice quiet nooks for couples. All Star has definitely hit the mark ...” (Yelp reviewer)

“The place celebrates America and its (everyday) heroes. Even all the music is by American artists. I like the vibe and feel of this place and there is no denying that Shane Street knows his way around a great restaurant. This place is stupid good.” (Rob Balon—Austin area food critic)

The future of Texas is in jeopardy. State policies from the Legislature have defunded or underfunded important

Lakeway’s Distinguished Speaker – Dinner series will be held at the Lakeway Activity Center on the third Sunday night of October and November 2012, and the third Sunday night of January and February, 2013. The March dinner meeting will be March 10 because a later day would collide with Spring break.

“This is a great lineup of speakers,” said Jean Hennagin who chaired the speakers committee this year. “We are offering a variety of topics to present an interesting and informative evening, and the catered dinners promise to be outstanding.”

Leading off October 21 will be Yoav di-Capua who will speak to the topic “Whither the Arab Spring.” Di-Capua’s specialty at the University of Texas is Arab intellectual history. The spring of 2011 will be forever known as the “Arab Spring” – that mysterious and inspirational outcry from Arabs for freedom.

Beginning in Tunisia and continuing to spread throughout the Arab world, most recently in Syria, this surprising surge from the Arab people has toppled and shaken governments. Professor Di-Capua speaks to the future of these fragile steps toward freedom – and perhaps an “Arab Autumn”?

H. W. Brands will speak November 18 to the title “The Man Who Saved the Union: Ulysses Grant in War and Peace.” Brands is the author

of 25 books of American history and biography, and is a professor at the University of Texas. A Viewpoints favorite, Brands returns to discuss his latest work released just two weeks before his appearance in Lakeway, a sweeping biography of Ulysses Grant.

Allison Orr, Artistic Director of Austin’s acclaimed Forklift Danceworks, will speak January 20, 2013. to the Choreographing the Everyday – a lecture inethnographic performance.” Her newest dance, entitled Solo Symphony, featured Austin Symphony Conductor Peter Bay and premiered in July 2012 at Austin’s Long Center. Orr will discuss her unique choreographic style, showing excerpts from past works and talking about her process of creating dances with everyday people in everyday life.

The February 17th speaker will be Jordan Steiker, University of Texas School of Law professor. He will speak to the title “The American Death Penalty: Past, Present, and Future.” Steiker served as a law clerk to Justice Thurgood Marshall. Professor Steiker will discuss the history of capital punishment in America, his thoughts on recent cases in the media and the future of the capital punishment system.

On March 10, 2013 John Nielson-Gammon will speak to the title “What Scientists Can’t Tell You About Climate Change.” Dr. Nielsen-

Gammon joined the faculty at Texas A&M University in 1991 and was appointed Texas State Climatologist by then-Governor George W. Bush in 2000. Dr. Nielsen-Gammon’s research involves such topics as jet streams, heavy rain, sea breezes, data assimilation, and drought monitoring and forecasting. The political term is “global warming” – the scientific term is “climate change.” Whatever you call it – it’s a subject swirling in the media like a tornado. Dr. Nielsen-Gammon’s talk on this controversial topic is sure to give you something to think about.

Lake Travis Youth AssociationAt its regular meeting on Monday, September 17, LTYA Board

of Directors approved an ambitious development plan that could ultimately triple the amount of field space available to our kids.  The plan includes moving LTYA’s main facility from the current Field of Dreams location to a new facility that would be purchased and constructed off of Bee Creek Road.  LTYA already has the land for the new facility under contract with the current owners.  The purchase of the new facility would be funded by selling the current Field of Dreams site.  The new development plan is far from a “done deal,” but the Board of Directors remains confident and committed to bringing this vision to fruition.

The Board of Directors has called a special meeting of the full membership of LTYA in order to present the details of this plan to our sports community and call for a vote approving its implementation.  We hope that you will join us for this special presentation at a unique moment in our organization’s history.  The meeting has been called for 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 21, at the Lakeway Activity Center.  All LTYA Members are welcome to attend and vote.  If you believe that you will likely attend this meeting, please contact LTYA and RSVP. Doing so will help our staff plan for the appropriate sized audience.

With an estimated 8,000 spectators in attendance, Lake Travis Independent School District officials marked the completion of improvements to various athletic facilities with a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony held September 7 at Cavalier Stadium prior to the Lake Travis High School varsity football home opener.

The $2 million improvements—funded by interest earnings realized through the District’s 2006 bond program—include new field drainage, the installation of artificial turf, a new and larger press box, a new sound system and a new scoreboard at the LTHS main stadium. Other investments include the installation of new scoreboards at the LTHS upper track stadium, the baseball field and the softball field; the replacement of lighting at the LTHS baseball field; and the replacement of freshman lockers at the Cavalier Activity Center.

“The new home of the Cavaliers is absolutely beautiful,” said Dr. Brad Lancaster, LTISD Superintendent. “In addition to aesthetics, the installation of artificial turf will significantly lower maintenance costs and provide year-round use by many of our extracurricular programs. Overall, the improvements to these athletic facilities will have a direct and lasting impact on our students and school community.”

District voters approved a $126.8 million school bond election in September 2005. However, the package is referred to as the 2006 Bond program, marking the period when the bonds were actually sold at market. The five-year bond series included the renovation and expansion of Lake Travis High School, construction of a fifth elementary school (Serene Hills), expansion of both Lake Travis and Hudson Bend middle schools, improvements to various athletic facilities, construction of a transportation and distribution center, and land acquisition in anticipation of future growth and facilities. Fitch Ratings, a global rating agency which provides the world’s credit markets with independent and prospective credit

opinions, research, and data, recently affirmed the District’s bond rating at ‘AA+,’ the highest level given to public school districts.

According to Johnny Hill, LTISD Assistant Superintendent for Business, Financial and Auxiliary Services, the District earned approximately $9.3 million in interest earnings on its 2006 Bond program.

“The majority of those interest earnings have been used to cover inflationary costs of construction associated with the projects that were specified under the 2006 Bond program,” said Mr. Hill. “Subsequently, all projects within that bond are now complete.”

The athletic improvements are part of the District’s Long Range Facilities Master Plan initially developed in 2009 but did not meet the criteria established by the citizens’ advisory committee to be included in the final 2011 Bond package.

SET Engineering, Inc. of Mansfield, Texas provided engineering services related to the drainage improvements and installation of the artificial turf, while Austin-based Pfluger Associates Architects performed architectural and engineering work on the other athletic facilities contained in the overall project. The artificial turf was installed by FieldTurf USA, Inc., one of the nation’s leading manufacturers of synthetic turf.

Earlier this summer, Lake Travis High School earned the UIL Lone Star Cup for team performance in district and state championships during the 2011-2012 school year. This unique accolade demonstrates success in our programs, but more importantly, it is representative of the healthy balance that exists between academics, fine arts and athletics at Lake Travis High School,” added Dr. Lancaster. “The Lone Star Cup is a collective achievement to be shared by our students, teachers, staff and the LT community.”

The Lake Travis Independent School District is one of 23 districts that has been invited to join the Texas High Performance Schools Consortium, announced Texas Commissioner of Education Michael L. Williams. According to Mr. Williams, the consortium will help develop innovative, next-generation learning standards, assessments and accountability systems.

“The school districts selected to participate in the consortium are already known for their innovative work and are looked to by many as educational leaders,” said Mr. Williams. “This exciting project will help the Governor, legislative leaders and the Texas Education Agency craft a sound, well-thought out plan to move all Texas schools to the next performance level.”

“This gives us an important seat at the table,” said Dr. Brad Lancaster, LTISD superintendent. “We are excited about the opportunities this initiative will present for our students, teachers, and parents as we work with our education commissioner to improve public education for all students. To be selected for membership in the consortium from the more than 1,000 school districts across the state is quite an honor.” The consortium will make recommendations in four key areas:

Digital learning—Engagement of students in digital learning, including the use of electronic textbooks and instructional materials and courses offered through the Texas Virtual School Network;

Learning standards—Standards that a student must master to be successful in a competitive postsecondary environment;

Multiple assessments—Various methods of measuring student progress to keep students, parents and schools informed, and the actions consortium participants are taking to improve learning; and

Local control—Ways in which reliance on local input and decision-making enable communities and parents to be involved in the important decisions regarding the education of their children.

Districts submitted an application and went through a rigorous selection process to become part of the consortium. To be eligible to participate, a district or charter must have:• Received either national, statewide, or regional public acknowledgement

for district-wide or campus-wide excellence in academic performance or innovative practice;

• Supplied proof of compliance with TEA audit requirements; and• Met performance ratings requirements: only districts and campuses

that have received Academically Acceptable, Recognized, or Exemplary ratings and open enrollment charter schools that are rated Exemplary in the 2010-2011 state accountability system are eligible. In selecting the participants, state law required the Commissioner to create

a consortium that reflected the state’s diversity in district size and type, as well as student demographics. In addition to Lake Travis ISD, other districts invited to participate in the consortium include the following ISDs:

Anderson-Shiro Consolidated , Clear Creek, College Station, Coppell, Duncanville, Eanes, Glen Rose, Guthrie Common, Harlingen C, Highland

Park (Dallas County), Irving, Klein, Lancaster, Lewisville, McAllen, McKinney, Northwest, Prosper, Richardson, Roscoe, Round Rock, White Oak

The Texas Education Agency will host the first consortium meeting next month. For more info, contact the Lake Travis ISD Office of Communications at (512) 533-6046.
