BOOSTING THE LOCAL CARE WORKFORCE PROGRAM

Boosting the Local Care Workforce Program(BLCW) was announced in the 2017-2018 Federal Budget as a $33

million Program designed to develop the immediate capacity of disability and aged care service providers to

operate effectively and expand their workforces

The main objective of the program is to support the development of services in the areas of unmet needs The

program will contribute to the achievement of a vibrant market for disability services and allow people with disability

to exercise choice and control over the services they receive and when and where they receive those services

If you are a disability start-up sole provider an existing provider or an aged care provider looking at registering to

deliver services through the NDIS platform and have some identified areas that you could benefit with some

support for example

o Transition assisstance

o Software tailored to meet business needs

o Professional services

o Business Advice

o Vision and Mission the way to reflect this in service provision

This year the Adelaide Fringe has introduced a number of new access initiatives to ensure people of all abilities

can experience the magic of the festival and its program

These include

- Creating an Access Guide in February which will list recommended events from accessibility partners Deaf

CanDo and Royal Society for the Blind (RSB)

- Introducing 20 Access Champion volunteers who will be stationed at certain events to support patrons with

access requirements This may be navigating accessible entry points to venues chaperoning them to seats

liaising with access service providers (Auslan interpreters and audio describers) and promoting the Access Guide

NDS invites those who are about to work as a Support Coordinator and those who have been working in Support

Coordination for less than two years to a day of training with the Support Coordination Academy (SCA) on the

workshop focuses on the tangible aspects of delivering Support Coordination using real world scenarios and will

DISABILITY ADVOCATE APPOINTED FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIA

The Hon Michelle Lensink Minister for Human Services announced the appointment of Dr David Caudrey as

Disability Advocate to strengthen and promote the interests of people with disability during the implementation of

the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

Dr Caudrey starts his role in January 2019 and will be independent of disability service delivery His responsibility is

to identify and improve systemic issues arising from the disability reform process including the introduction of the

NDIS Dr Caudrey has a long history working in the disability sector having held positions including Executive



Director of Disability SA and CEO of Novita Childrenrsquos Services

The Disability Advocate is part of the Office of the Public Advocate and will work closely with the Public Advocate

the Department of Human Services the National Disability Insurance Agency sector partners and community

advocacy organisations

NATIONAL DISABILITY CONFERENCE INITIATIVE

The Australian Government is inviting applications in an open process to deliver services under the Disability

Mental Health and Carer National Disability Conference Initiative in 2019-2020

The National Disability Conference Initiative provides grants to help people with disability to participate in

INTEGRATED CARER SUPPORT SERVICE CARER GATEWAY REGIONAL DELIVERY PARTNERS

The Australian Government is inviting applications in an open process to apply to deliver services under the

Integrated Carer Support Services from 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2024 This grant process will select a new network

of Carer Gateway regional delivery partners (RDPs) across Australia to help carers access new and improved local

and targeted services including

needs assessment and planning

in-person and phone-based coaching counselling and in person peer support

information and advice

targeted financial support packages with a focus on supporting employment education respite access and

transport

access to emergency crisis support and

assistance with navigating relevant local services available to carers through federal state and local

government and non-government providers including the National Disability Insurance Scheme My Aged

Care and palliative care

organisers to provide accessibility measures that will maximise the inclusion and participation of people with

disability at their conference

The Marshall Liberal Government is encouraging rural and regional communities from across the state to apply for

a share of $1 million to improve the health and wellbeing of their communities

The second round of the SA Healthy Towns Challenge launches today and the Minister for Health and Wellbeing

Stephen Wade said grants of up to $50000 each are on offer to regional towns to develop preventative health

programs within their community

Examples of possible projects include

bull Establishing a farmersrsquo market or community produce swap meet to increase access to affordable and healthy

food

bull Conducting screening for type 2 diabetes risk or skin cancer at Field Days

bull Replacing or upgrading community-based sport or playground equipment

bull Training volunteers at sport clubs in responsible service of alcohol and providing healthier food options in

canteens and for functions

bull Providing suicide prevention programs through qualified agencies

Professor Paddy Phillips SA Health Chief Medical Officer and Public Health Officer said the focus of the grants

will be on initiatives that have measurable results and benefits to the community

Applications will close on Monday 15 April 2019 and successful projects will run from July 2019 to June 2020

Projects must be in partnership with a non-government organisation or university to help communities develop

projects based on evidence and best practice
