The College sports program includes basketball, athletics, tennis, volleyball, soccer, football, cricket, cross country,

badminton, golf, table tennis and swimming. Many of the teams have training at lunch time each week.

Italian Immersion CampOctober 15th, twelve students and Miss Brenna, our language assistant, traveled to Melbourne for an Italian immersion camp. First day saw us visit the NGV to look at Renaissance and Medieval art and a bronze sculpture called “GONE” by KAWS, then an afternoon break to taste Italian ice-cream at Pidapipo in Degraves Street before making our way to the immigration museum. In the evening, a tram ride to Brunswick to taste Italian food at the Abruzzo Club. Next day, we completed an immersion activity at COASIT in Faraday Street Carlton and a comprehensive tour of the Museo Italiano. A quick snack for lunch at Brunetti’s then off to the Kino to see one of the films presented in this year’s Lavazza Film Festival. Yemaya asked if we could visit Pelligrini’s, an iconic cafe at the top of Bourke Street where the students were given a free granita. Then back to Carlton for a final look at the Italian influences in the suburb and a delicious pizza at Gemma’s in Elgin St. Finally, no visit to the city would be complete without a trip to the Vic Market before a very quiet train ride back to Ballan.

VCE ART ExhibitionOur annual end of year exhibition ran on the16th – 18th of October, exhibiting the work of Year 12 Media, Studio Arts and Visual Communication and Design students. Our library was enlivened by the exhibit which included photography, film, podcasts, illustrations, textiles and digital work. The diversity of student work showcases our students’ innovation and the many pathways students have into the creative industries. Parents and the general public were invited to attend opening night on Wednesday to recognise our student’s achievement. The visual arts teachers organised external judges to critique the works and determine the award winners, which are as follows:

The Excellence in Media Award was awarded to Ned Stevens for his film “Shortcut”. Our judge, former Media teacher Brendan Murray, spoke highly of Ned’s creative camera angles and slick editing. Claudia Gross was also highly recommended for her zine ‘Hebe’.

The Excellence in Visual Communication Award was presented to Kyle Azzopardi for his building presentation. Donna Kelly, who judged the design category, was impressed by Kyle’s rigorous research and elements of sustainability.

The Excellence in Art Award was presented to Claudia Gross for her tapestry “Bushburbia 1”. Former Art teacher, Alec Cimera, thought this work was innovative in its presentation using embroidery hoop, and the use of contrast was highly effective and eye-catching. Congratulations Ned, Kyle and Claudia. And well done to all our visual arts students for presenting such high quality work.

Student voiceUpdate from new College Captain Andromeda Bell

This year in SRC we’ve been focusing on establishing some things, and really working to get them up and running again after being non-existent for the past few years. We’ve had critics state when we first pitched the idea that “it wouldn’t work”, and “it’s a waste of your time”, “SRC never does anything anyway”. That may have been true in previous years before it fell apart, but now that it is back we are determined to create stable foundations for years to come. What we’ve done this year may not be blatantly obvious to the student body but that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been things going on behind the scenes. We’ve also organised an entire school rubbish pick up day, where every mentor group was designated an area. We’ve picked charity groups for Spirit Week, and we’ve had a session where Year 11 students talked to the Year 10’s about VCE, some tips on how to do well, and definitely NOT to procrastinate.

If you have any concerns, ideas or questions, whether parent or student, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I’d love to hear from you.

Year 12 Celebration DayOur last day of Yr 12s saw an early start as a few students sneaked into the school to ‘decorate’ it as part of muchk up day. Thankfully nobody went oboard. We then had a whole school assembly at 9am to say goodbye. With many of them dressed up the day had a really nice feel to it. Outgoing College Captain Marlon, made a speech and so did Mr MacPhail. The Yr 12s then all hopped on the bus to Bendigo with Ms Gunders, Mr Ackland and Mr MacPhail. In Bendigo we spent the day together doing laser tag, go carting and roller blading. We also sat down together for a BBQ lunch. It was a really fun and enjoyable way to finish our schooling and now down to the hard work of studying for our exams!

Parenting teensDealing with stress (part 1 of 2)Stress in teenagers – and anyone – can be unpleasant, but it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Stress is the way your body responds to challenges and gets you ready to face them with attention, energy and strength. When you feel you can cope with these challenges, stress gets you ready for action and gives you the motivation to get things done. Everyone experiences stress. There’s nothing wrong with your teenage child if they are stressed. But stress can cause problems when it goes on for too long, or your child has more stress than he or she can cope with.

Lots of things cause stress in teenagers, but the top five causes are:• relationships with friends, boyfriends / girlfriends• life changes like leaving school, getting into university or getting a job• too many things to do, and feeling unprepared or overwhelmed by tasks• lack of sleep• school, especially homework, exams and pressure to do well

How to reduce stress in teenagers

In general, you can help your child with stress by:• listening• spending time connecting with your child• doing things that make your child feel good. You can also help your child reduce stress by working together on two key areas – healthy lifestyle and helpful thinking.

Here are some healthy family lifestyle changes that you and your child can make to reduce stress:• Do some physical activity: exercise burns off the ‘stress hormone’ cortisol, so exercise can help the body relax.

• Stay connected to family and friends : plan some special time with your child when you know they are feeling stressed. Positive relationships are the building blocks of mental health.

• Get enough sleep: one of the biggest causes of stress in teenagers is not getting enough sleep. Your child still needs about 8-10 hours of sleep a night.

• Eat good food: aim for a family diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegies, lean meat, dairy foods and wholegrains.

• Relax and unwind: this might be going for a walk, reading a book, having a relaxing bath or listening to some music.

Part 2 will contain information on helpful thinking to reduce teen stress.

Meet the staffMs Angela OlverAngela loves Daylesford and sees her teaching work as a way of making a positive

contribution to her community. Both her parents attended the College when it

was referred to as Daylesford Technical School and she and her husband were

educated at the college in the 80s. Angela’s two children recently completed VCE

at the College also - that’s quite the intergenerational trifecta! Angela feels a

strong responsibility to prepare students for a life outside the school system and

thinks the relationships formed between staff and students at Daylesford College

are core to its identity. Angela teaches Year 7 Maths, Year 10 Maths, VCE Further

Maths and VCE Maths Methods.

VET HospitalityTwo years ago, Mr MacPhail and I decided to offer VET Hospitality for our students at Dayesford College. For us to achieve this we needed a TAFE to support our program, and for myself being a Chef there is only one TAFE that I wanted our school to be associated with and that is William Angliss in Melbourne. This TAFE is an Australian icon, with the range of courses they offer and we wanted our students to be

able to have access to this experience.

2018 saw the first group of VET Hospitality Kitchen Operations students start our program, and the road has not always been smooth. The course requires the students to stay after school to participate in practical cooking classes and many hours spent under pinning the practical knowledge with theory work.

Finally, in term 4, Year 12 VET Hospitality students had to complete a breakfast service and dinner as assessment, where the staff were lucky enough to receive a free delicous breakfast and parents received beautifully presented, sensational food for their parent dinner night on Wednesday 16th October. The Year 12’s have been able to show case all their hard work and skill development to their families by hosting a 3 course dinner. The students produce 2 entrée’s, 3 mains and 2 amazing dessert.

As their teacher, I am extremely proud of the following students and I wish them all the very best for their future.Eugine Casaya, Alkira Cox, Katie Dwyer, Briony Ferrier, David Gamble, Kelly McPherson & Lexey Saville.
