Chair’s Message

The ASQ Reliability Division Leadership team would like to thank all our members for their con-tinued membership. I would also like to thank all our volunteers for their continued commitment to the division and the countless hours they spend providing member value.

There has been some confusion regarding our member portal, www.asqrd.org and specifically how to log into the website. ASQrd.org was created a few years ago outside of ASQ in order to improve member value and provide the volunteer leadership team flexibility in terms of content generation. The site is 100 % volunteer managed. Unfortunately, the site is not connected to any ASQ member database. Thus our volunteer team manually generates log in credentials. The leadership team is working on a long term solution to this, and open to any suggestions. If you are a member and have not received a log in, please email me at [email protected].

We would also like to hear from our members regarding any areas where we can improve, as well as areas where we have excelled. I encourage you to join us and be an active volunteer. We are always looking for individuals willing to contribute to the Division no matter where they are geo-graphically located.

See you at ASTR2016 Conference Sept 28-30, at Pensacola Beach, FL., drop by and say Hi.

Investments in ASQ's reserve fund program were over $92,700. There is also a $3,500 advance for ASTR '16 and $3,500 advance for RAMS'17 seed monies.

Membership revenue for the seven months ended July 31, 2016 was 14,112.

Investment Income for the seven months ended July 31, 2016 was $5,123.

Total division revenue from all sources for the seven months ended July 31, 2016 was $30,713.

Expenses for the seven months ended July 31, 2016 were $36,279.

The net deficit (net loss) for the seven months ended July 31, 2016 was $5,565.

Other Notes:

1. The income from “Education/Courses” will be down from 2015. (RAMS and March courses were cancelled due to low enrollment)

2. Spending on on-line education is increasing from 2015.

3. Travel is our largest expense.

4. Income from advertising continues to be the bright spot in Income this year.

Risk analysis around the Budgeted Income shows bounds of ($67,045 to $72,452); where budgeted income is $71,700. This will tighten further around the budgeted income by 3rd quarter report based on successful advertising income and success-ful course taught. Risk analysis around the Budgeted Expenses shows bounds of ($69,879, $78,390); where budgeted expenses are $75,400.

Accelerated Life Test (ALT) —-details Day :Tuesday, September 27, 8:00am–5:00 pm

Objective

The successful student will understand how to use accelerated test principles that can improve hardware reliability for sys-tems. Practical design techniques are encouraged with useful examples and case histories that supplement the theory. Design engineers and their managers who are responsible for design and development of long-lived systems. ALT can be a costly and time consuming activity, it is best to get it right the first time.

This seminar begins with basic theory and expands with the practical examples to cover a wide range of problems with set-ting-up and analyzing an ALT. ALT is actually a series of tests that can uncover failure modes and hidden flaws before a product is released. Learn easy and practical ways to approach a number of common reliability problems. This course is en-gineering oriented.

Frequently Asked Questions for CBT CRE What kind of calculator can I bring?

Calculator Policy: With the introduction of palmtop computers and the increasing sophistication of scientific cal-culators, ASQ has become increasingly aware of the need to limit the types of calculators permitted for use during the examinations. Any silent, hand-held, battery-operated calculator WITHOUT an alphabetic keyboard will be permitted; however all programmable memory MUST be cleared before they enter the exam room. Calcula-tors such as the Texas Instruments TI-83, TI-89 or similar are ABSOLUTELY NOT allowed because they contain alphabetic keyboards. The examination is written so that a simple calculator will be sufficient to perform all calculations. Calculators that are approved for use during ASQ exams are: 1)Casio fx 115; 2) HP 33 s; 3) HP 35s; 4) TI 30X; 5) TI 36X. However, you may bring your own approved calculator. Examinees are allowed to have a backup calculator if necessary.

No beepers, radios/CD players/iPods/MP3 players, or headphones, Kindles, Nooks, Smart Watches, etc. are allowed. If brought into exam room they MUST be turned off and stored away. NO CELL PHONES ARE ALLOWED IN THE EXAM ROOM.

Is the exam open-book?

The CRE is open book, with the following rules:

All reference materials (i.e. including all forms of notes) must be bound and remain bound during the exam. Bound refers to material permanently bound by stitching or glue and materials fastened securely in its cover by fasteners, which penetrate all papers (i.e. ring binders, spiral binders, plastic snap binders, brads, or screw posts). Manually or hand stapled documents that are not securely fastened in their covers are not allowed. The size of workspace ar-ea at Prometric test centers is limited. The approximate desk dimensions are 48" in length and 24" in width.

Before you enter the exam room, the Test Center Administrator (TCA) will inspect all references. "Post-Its" will be permitted as book tabs only (must be attached prior to entering the test center). Items strictly prohibited in the ex-am area: hand stapled materials, blank writing tablets or tablets containing blank pages, unbound tablets, unbound notes, slide charts and/or wheel charts (hand-held cardboard or plastic calculating devices with rotating or sliding pieces).

Absolutely no collections of questions and answers or weekly refresher-course quizzes are permitted. Reference sources that contain such copy are not allowed unless the questions are removed or obscured.

Are there any tips to help me prepare for test day?

Yes, please visit the following webpage for tips to help you prepare for your appointment at a Prometric test center.

ASQ-RD Membership is climbing!

While off to a rocky several years, ASQ-RD paid membership now seems to be on a upward slope; especially since late 2013.

Possible reasons are the ASQ-RD webinars, publi-cations in Reliability, and Social media to better inform Reliability professionals of upcoming events, new techniques, ASQ-RD website for in-stant access to information and our instructor-led course offerings. Whatever may be the cause(s), we on the ASQ-RD leadership team will continue to look for better ways to inform, educate, and drive home the importance of Reliability as a vital feature of any Quality process.

(Notice from the plot the dips in paid membership typically occur during the summers, and rise to their new levels the April-May time period of the next year)

Regional Councilor Updates & Other News

The Regional Councilor effort continues to provide outreach at the local level and was an important part of the ASQ Reliability Division receiving a Silver Award from the ASQ Performance Awards & Recognition Committee in 2015. For 2016 year to date, Regional Councilors have been involved in 15 engagements. Keep up the great work! You will notice on the following pages of our roster that some people on our Regional Councilor team have changed. We have some new volunteers join and some folks have moved on to serve the division in different ways or are no longer able to serve. We welcome our new Regional Councilors: Ha Dao in Region 9 and Rabia Muam-mar in Jordan. We are recruiting for additional Regional Councilors and would welcome anyone in any location but we are specif-ically recruiting for locations where we do not have a Regional Councilor: - International Locations - Region 2 upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania - Region 3 New York/New Jersey metro area and northern New Jersey - Region 7 southern California, southern Nevada, Arizona - Region 14B northern Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas - Region 15B eastern Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama

Congratulations to the Audit Division on its 25th Annual Conference!

Seven ASQ divisions are participating in the milestone 25th Annual ASQ Audit Division Confer-ence in Memphis, TN, October 20 – 21, 2016. New Horizons in Auditing will address challenges and opportunities facing those in the auditing field but the topics also translate well into other in-dustries. The Biomedical; Design and Construction; Energy and Environmental; Food, Drug, and Cosmetic; Software; and Statistics Divisions are all joining together to present this exciting pro-gram. There will also be a meeting of the newly created U.S. TAG to ISO PC 302 and a chance to win a $200 Visa gift card. Please encourage your members to attend this once-a-year event. The conference is being held at the famous Peabody Hotel in Memphis, where twice each day, five ducks still visit the lobby fountain like clockwork at 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Read how the tradi-tion began with a weekend hunting trip back in the 1930s.
