Banwell Vision Committee Update

The Banwell Vision Committee was organized in September and has already met several times to review the current status of Banwell and our surrounding community. Along with this, we have created a plan to start gathering information which will help with our recommendations to the Board of Directors. At the beginning of November, a banner was posted just outside the Fireside room in order to gather random thoughts from everyone regarding ways that our ministry could be advanced. To date we have received several suggestions which are very encouraging. Also in November, we distributed a questionnaire to all the ministries at Banwell. The main scope of this questionnaire is to perform an analysis of how each ministry is performing and how it fits into Banwell’s Mission Statement. Going forward, we will be coming to the congregation and community through “town hall meetings”, one on one sessions and a general questionnaire. We really need and would appreciate your feedback when the opportunity arises over the next couple months. We hope to be completed gathering feedback by the end of January and as always appreciate your prayers and encouragement as we work through this process. Dave Hammond, Chair – Vision Committee

Pastoral Care & Worship Committee Submitted by : Donna Soper The Christmas season is upon us and the church calendar is filled with many opportunities to fellowship with each other. We hope you will not only be able to enjoy one or more of these occasions but that you will invite a friend to join you.

How joyful it was in November to witness the baptism of nine people: Debbie Dion, Miranda Goodwin, Coleen Martin, Nikki Wright, Ron Bell, Bob Bromley, Liam Goodwin, Randy Martin and Rodi Sengmany. How thankful are we that God led them to our doors. We can now walk along side them and support them on their faith journey. We were so moved hearing the personal testimonies

from Rodi Sengmany and Andrew Gallant.

In January we will be celebrating Banwell's 13th Anniversary on Sunday, January 25th. We are pleased to announce that the Reverend Craig Rumble has accepted our invitation to be our guest speaker. Pastor Rumble is a former pastor of Temple/Olivet which became Banwell Community Church. Many of us who know Pastor Rumble look forward to seeing him, his wife Deborah and teenage daughter Braelyn. We will feast on a pot luck lunch that day and sign-up sheets will be available soon for you to add your favourite dish.

We wish each and everyone a very blessed Christmas season. May we all use every opportunity to share our faith during this important time of the year.

Chair: Dennis Dick Members: Marsha Campbell, Heather Heuston, Deborah Martel, Nancy Pavlovich, Donna Soper

Thank you to all the volunteers for their continued support throughout the fall.

View from the Pew

The End. No, it isn’t the end of my View from the Pews; or the end of the year; I want to talk about the end of the world. I know it isn’t usually a topic we discuss at this joyous time of the year but I want to tell you how I did my part in keeping the world from ending a few (well maybe quite-a-few-) decades ago so that you can enjoy this Holi-day! In The Living Bible, Matthew 24:36, Jesus is saying: “But no one knows the date and hour when the end will be -no-

not even the angels. No, nor even God’s Son. Only the Father knows.

Well when I was about 10 years old, I heard that verse in Sunday School and it scared me so badly I know I needed to do something that would save, not mankind, I didn’t think that far ahead, and maybe not my brothers…but my Mom and sisters .... So making sure it wouldn’t happen, I would say “Today the world will end”. I said it every day and without fail. Therefore if I knew the world was going to end, and I WAS somebody, it couldn’t end that day. It worked – the world didn’t end! I don’t remember how long I kept that up, but being scared, and just knowing that it worked, I probably kept it up for a long time. My faith has come a long way since I was 10. Now that I have lost countless friends and family members, knowing they await my arri-val I don’t feel frightened by the end of my life anymore – or is it my age that has come to terms with the End? Pastor Alex has been using this topic for various sermons during the month of October and November so it took me back all those years. So in thinking about it, I will begin to say it again so you can enjoy this Christmas Holiday with friends and family and you can also look forward to the beginning of another year… But that is just my 10-year-old view, Zelma Horvath

RECYCLING UPDATE

The paper cups and plates used at the church are recy-clable and can be rinsed and put in the blue boxes not the garbage cans. We pur-posely purchased recyclables to do our part in taking care of God's great plant Earth."

MOVIE NIGHT Fireproof

Popcorn and water bottles provided. Invite a friend to

join you!

Donations of non-perishable food items for the Downtown Mission or a freewill offering

Age Unlimited December/January

“She gave birth to her firstborn - a son - and placed Him in a manger.” Luke 2:7

The most wonderful time of the year is now here - the season of Advent. The fall harvest and house-cleaning is complete, the yard and garden are at rest, the leaves raked and recycled. Now we can begin thoughts of Christmas. We can go shopping for treasured gifts, purchase extra baking supplies, and decorate our homes. Time is spent baking delicious, festive cookies. We are planning special meals. The tree is decorated with glowing lights and treasured ornaments, and gifts are wrapped in anticipation of December 25th “Lest we forget.”

“JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON”

HUMAN RESOURCES COMMITTEE

We are very pleased to inform you that Linda Moir will facilitate the return of the “Life Keys” Seminar that she previously presented to our congregation.

Life Keys grew out of a need to help members of churches find meaning and purpose through discov-ering and affirming the following:

Discovering who you are.

What you do best?

What you are passionate about?

What do you value?

What are your priorities?

This special opportunity will be held in the New Year. Details coming in the January News & Views. Submitted by Jim Wheeler

THE MAGIC BANK ACCOUNT

The Author is not known. It was found in the billfold of coach Paul Bear Brant, Alabama, after he died in 1982.

The Magic Bank Account

Imagine that you had won the following *PRIZE* in a contest: Each morning your bank would de-

posit $86,400 in your private account for your use. However, this prize has rules:

1. Everything that you didn't spend during each day is taken away from you.

2. You may not simply transfer money into some other account.

3. You may only spend it.

4. Each morning upon awakening, the bank opens your account with another $86,400 for that

day.

5. The bank can end the game without warning; at any time it can say, “Game Over!". It can

close the account and you will not receive a new one.

What would you personally do? Would you buy anything and everything you wanted - not only for

yourself, but for all the people you love and care for - even for people you don't know, because you

couldn't possibly spend it all on yourself? OR would you spend every penny, and use it all, because

you knew it would be replenished in the morning?

ACTUALLY, This GAME is REAL!

Each of us is already a winner of this *PRIZE*. The prize is *TIME*

1. Each morning we awaken to receive 86,400 seconds as a gift of life.

2. And when we go to sleep at night, any remaining time is Not credited to us.

3. What we haven't used up that day is forever lost.

4. Yesterday is forever gone.

5. Each morning the account is refilled, but the bank can dissolve your account at any time

WITHOUT WARNING...

SO, what will YOU do with your 86,400 seconds? Those seconds are worth so much more than the

same amount in dollars. Think about it and remember to enjoy every second of your life, because

time races by so much quicker than you think. So take care of yourself, be happy, love deeply and

enjoy life!

Here's wishing you a wonderful and beautiful day. Start “spending”....

Small Groups Ministry Update Hello Banwell Family!! I want to update you on our small groups ministry here at Banwell Communi-ty Church. Over the past couple months, the Pastoral Care and Worship Committee along with Pastor Alex, Marlee Page (Christian Education Director) and myself have been developing an up-dated ministry plan for Small Groups. Initial work has led to these desired outcomes for our Small Groups Ministry.

Ministry Outcomes

1. Diverse opportunities for spiritual growth across a broad spectrum of age and gender de-mographics for BCC Members and Attendees; allowing all to participate in this Ministry.

2. Growth from current status to 100% of Church Membership participation in Small Group

Ministry. 3. In addition to the Pastor, Small Groups continue to provide a significant and meaningful component of Pastoral Care in the BCC congregation. 4. Development of specific mission/service opportunities for Small Groups to participate in.

These specific outcomes are strategically aligned with our Mission and Vision at Banwell. As you will recall, our mission statement says: Being led by God to this place, we are committed to:

Share the love and words of Christ in this diverse community

The BCC Small Groups Ministry intentionally focuses on love for others through the example of Jesus Christ.

Grow in our faith

The BCC Small Groups Ministry focuses on Bible-based study and practical life application of its teachings.

Learn about our gifts

As groups develop, they are encouraged to explore and develop their gifts to use in service.

Bring hope here and around the world

For mature Groups, encouragement and resources focused on Small Groups in mission will be required.

Please do not hesitate to contact myself – Dave Page at the following email, [email protected], or any of the Small Group Facilitators if you would like to learn more about getting involved with a Small Group here at Banwell. Look for more communication about Small Group Opportunities in the near future. Yours in Christ, Dave Page, Small Groups Coordinator

Small Groups Ministry Update If you have never been involved with a Small Group, I would encourage you to consider the benefits associated with Small Group participation. Here are 5 for you to consider: 1. Jesus’ Way of Life Cannot Be Learned Alone. Jesus’ teachings fall into two categories: how to develop yourself spiritually, and how to treat

other people. Neither of these can be learned alone. Small groups are tried-and-true places to find support.

2. Support Encourages Change. We each have hurtful, immature, and even dangerous behaviors that we need to change.

Change comes as we practice the teachings of Jesus. But it’s hard work, and it is nearly impossible if we’re trying to do it alone. 3. Relationships Lead to Sharing.

One of the biggest barriers to growth is “stuff.” Much of modern-day culture seems obsessed with accumulating new things. A tangible sign of growth is when a Jesus-follower learns to trust God more than they trust stuff. When we share, we are trusting that God will continue to provide for us. Small groups provide a place to make meaningful relationships where such sharing can take place.

4. Mission Happens in Small Groups.

What if Frodo had gone to Mordor without the Fellowship? Or Luke had tried to rescue Leia without Obi-Wan, Han, and Chewbacca? These stories are great because they demonstrate

the relationships that develop when groups go on mission together. One powerful way that Christians grow from small groups is by working toward shared goals and common causes.

When small groups unite to accomplish a meaningful mission, growth is the unavoidable result. 5. Small Groups Take Church Beyond Sunday.

Imagine you went to the gym for one hour a week. While it’s better than nothing, you’d probably just end up sore, tired, and sweaty without enjoying many long-term effects. If a person’s spirituality is limited to one hour a week, it will be difficult for them to grow. A small group leads to growth by creating more opportunities to come to know God, to practice the teachings of Jesus, and to grow spiritually.

Faces in the Crowd Congratulations to the following individuals who followed their Lord’s example through the waters of baptism on Nov. 16th: Debbie Dion, Miranda Goodwin, Coleen Martin, Nikki Wright, Ron Bell, Bob Bromley, Liam Goodwin, Randy Martin and Rodi Sengmany. The condolences of the congregation are extended to Joy Andrews upon the passing of her grandmother. It was a bitter cold November evening when the St. Anne Saints High School Football Team won the Wilson Conference crown with an overtime victory. Our own Braeden Braccio played a key role for St. Anne’s both on offence and defence. Our congratulations to Braeden for his and the teams success.

Dear Pastor Moir and Church Family, On behalf of the Board and staff, I would like to express our sincere gratitude for the love gift you gave to the Pregnancy Resource Centre. We are very appreciative of our brothers and sisters in Christ who enable this ministry to flourish. We truly consider it an honour to be the arm of the church in the community. It is to God we give the glory and praise for lives that are changed, and lives that are saved through our mission. Men’s Ministry Report

It was a bright Saturday morning when everyone has a number of responsibilities on their “To-Do-List” but, for Christian Wiley, our Rock Solid Ministries Teens, along with our men and the helpful hands of a few ladies some-thing very special happened in our church lobby. The aforementioned surrounded a production line organized under the direction of Kim Anber and the “Pie Makers” went to work for three hours resulting in the completion of 86 ap-ple pies. It was amazing, great fun and fellowship with our youth, and it was successful beyond our expectations. An event we are certain to repeat. Thanks to our young people for their commitment. A special thanks for the support we received from our con-gregation in purchasing pies that to date raised over $700 to be credited to our youth ministry. FANTASTIC. WHITE GIFT SUNDAY - DECEMBER 14TH When our men are requested to bring canned goods for the Downtown Mission.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OUR THANKS TO DENNIS DICK - for his faithful service and excellent contributions to the Men’s Ministry Executive. Dennis brought a powerful personal message to our Octo-ber Breakfast Meeting of the journey he and Laura have ex-perienced in recent years. It is clear they will be great par-ents and we wish them God’s blessings on their new jour-ney. Dennis taking a brief leave of absence from the execu-tive with our thanks and we look forward to his return.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GUESS WHO IS COMING TO BREAKFAST JANUARY 24TH? We will be welcoming Pastor Alex as our guest speaker. You will not only experience a great breakfast but an even greater guest speaker. Write it on your calendar. Jim Wheeler

The Men’s Ministry wish you all a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year.

A Christmas Prayer

O God our loving Father, help us Rightly to remember the birth of Jesus, That we may share in the song of the

Angels, the gladness of the shepherds And the worship of the wise men.

Close the door of hate and open the

Door of love all over the world.

Deliver us from evil by the blessing That Christ brings, and teach us To be merry with clear hearts.

May the Christmas morning

make us happy To be thy children and the Christmas

Evening bring us to our beds with Grateful thoughts,

forgiving and forgiven, For Jesus’ sake. Amen

My Back Pages

We crossed some sort of divide in our household a few months ago, when our kids from London were visiting us and our youngest son found out I had a USB port in my car. Of course that meant that I now had no excuse to prevent me from recording all of my music onto a flash drive. It really isn’t a whole lot of music … between the two of us, Linda and I have about 300 or so CD’s, or about three to four thousand individual songs (I have a friend who recently told me his collection consists of about 10,000), but it does make sense to store it in this way. When I get everything transferred, I’ll be able to walk out of the house with my entire music library in my pocket! Now before you get too excited that I’m finally coming of age, don’t expect miracles … there are no plans to get rid of hard copies of recorded music or, for that matter, start buying single pieces of mu-sic through I-tunes or some other on-line method. For one thing, the quality is not quite the same … and I really believe that listening to an entire collection of songs on an “album” is a healthy exercise, as well as a way of discovering new favourites. But I think there is a new understanding emerging about life through all of this. Technology is developing at a pretty fast clip, but the new does not always completely eclipse the old. The advent of the television in the 1950’s did not spell the end of radio … nor has the availabil-ity of personal movie viewing options closed the movie theatres. Things are different, to be sure, but some “old tech” stuff remains. I believe if we’re going to manage these times properly, we have to develop a different philosophy of life. Very rarely is life, either related to the tech boom or what I shall call “real life”, an “either/or” proposi-tion. The great American novelist John Updike put his finger on the issue with this quote; “No one is really stupid; everyone knows something you don’t.” Every person has his or her strong and weak points, can rise to the heights of inspired behaviour or descend to the depths of rank sinner. And so it is with all of life. If we’re going to nimbly navigate through all the changes and the latest “gee whiz” discoveries, we’re going to have to recognize what is worth saving from the past. As Ringo Starr sang in his song, “you know it don’t come easy.” Yet I think we as followers of Jesus have an advantage here. Part of the standard equipment that comes with our commitment to Christ is the opportunity to connect with Him and the Father through prayer, meditation and opening the scriptures. Such an exercise slows us down, allows us to reflect on what is lasting and what needs to be incorporated into life. It is the mark of a mature person to balance all of life’s demands and embrace what is true and real. The arrival of a new year allows us to evaluate and make some changes in life. If part of your analy-sis leads you to commit to a deeper devotional life, then you are on the way to developing some per-spective and balance. As Paul wished for his friends in Thessaloniki, so I wish for you;

“May God himself, the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put together – spirit, soul, and body –

and keep you fit for the coming of our master, Jesus Christ.” (I Thessalonians 5:23, The Message translation)

Devotedly your pastor … Alex
