    Throughout the Pilbara district, there

are 131 children in care (as at 31 July

2013) being cared for in 62 households

of carers who are relaves and 12

households of people who are not

    related to the children.

A state-wide call for more volunteers

to undertake the role of foster carers

for temporary and longer term care

has been made and this applies forNewman households too. Terry

Murphy, the Director General of the

    Department for Child Protecon and

Family Support (CPFS) says that nding

    enough commied careers is perhaps

one of their greatest challenges. The

Department is aiming to educate people

of the need for commied carers who

can provide a loving and supporve

home to some of the States most

vulnerable children and young people. There is need right across the State in

    both metropolitan and country areas,

and parcularly in Aboriginal and mul-

    cultural communies Murphy says.

    Natasha Bargeus, the Pilbara District

Director for the CPFS said that the

    majority of children in Newman

    requiring foster care come from

the Newman township but are also

likely to come from the surrounding

    communies and through to the

    Western Desert.

    CPFS considers it extremely important

that children in care maintain as muchstability as possible in terms of schools,

    community, culture, and contact with

    extended family and friends, which

can only happen if there are enough

    available careers in the relevant

community. The childs wellbeing is, of

    course, the primary concern.

Carers are o!ered training in readiness

to become a carer, ongoing access to

training and development of skills inunderstanding childhood trauma and

    aachment, access to learning and

    development resources, and regular

access and support from the Newman

o" ce and Fostering and Adopon

    Services.

    Foster caring is a demanding

    yet rewarding role that involves

understanding the needs of a child in

care and building strong and trusng

    relaonships. The people who take

on this role do so out of love and

    commitment.

CPFSs Newman o" ce has a Senior

O" cer of Care Services, Gemma Lora,

who assesses and provides trainingand support to foster carers who may

    be required for providing planned

    weekend respite, emergency overnight,

short and longer term care for both

    small and large sibling groups.

If you are interested and able to provide

care, you are invited to contact Ms

    Lora on 9175 4600 or at gemma.lora@

    cpfs.wa.gov.au or freecall Fostering

and Adopons Services on 1800 182178 to discuss how you can make

a real di!erence to children in our

    community.

    Country Chiropraccs Dr James

Curry will be heading o to India this

November for his second me. Dr Cara

    Clews has also previously undertaken

this journey. At their own expense,

    they travel with Murdoch Universitys

    Hands on India programme which

oers free chiropracc care, health carechecks, rst aid and medical supplies.

    The impoverished community who

they focus on includes refugees from

Bangladesh, many who have been in

India for the last thirty years. Despite

many having lived there for more

than a generaon, they are not legally

    entled to government educaon or

    health care.

In the north-east Indian slum of Siliguri

lies a building that has been converted

into a small school, a community centre

at night, a sewing training place to help

    people develop a self-sustaining micro-

business, in order to help address

some of the communitys needs. This

building has only been made availableto Hands on India for ve years. Funds

have been put aside in the hope of

    Chiropracc Hands Go to India

acquiring a tle deed for land to assist

with the longevity of these projects.

This project will be pivotal to

breaking the cycle of poverty within

    the community and providing these

people with a beacon of hope says

Dr Curry. "Your donaons to CountryChiropracc's involvement with

Hands on India 2013 would be greatly

    appreciated"

100% of funds raised are for the

    immediate benet of the residents

in the villages of Siliguri through

Hands on India. Funds raised will go

    towards medical supplies, rst aid

    equipment, transport to remote sites,

local translators, and communityinfrastructure. If you would like to make

    a donaon, please contact Country

    Chiropracc on 9175 2006.

    Newmans version of the Bledisloe

    Bloody Slow Cup has a serious origin;

the tragic loss of four Police O cers. In

    2001, the Newman Police Sub-District

had an area of approximately 256,000

    square kilometres. The furthest

indigenous community is Kiwirrkurranear the Northern Territory border.

On Australia Day that year, in response

to a call for assistance from Kiwirrkurra,

a team of three o cers were collected

at the Newman Airport in a Cessna

310 piloted by a police o cer from

    Karratha.

When due back in Newman at around

10 pm, their e.t.a. having been radioedahead, the Cessna did not appear.

    A search commenced immediately

by police and the local volunteer

emergency services. At 4:30 am the

following morning the crash site was

located around 2.6 kms South-East of

the airport. All four o cers had lost

    their lives.

This October, the posive impact of

their lives and their commitmentto safeguarding the peace of our

    community is remembered through

    the Remembrance Ceremony and the

    Bloody Slow Cup.

This way, if they are ever stolen and
