Vandalism in NewmanIt is disappoinng to have to addressvandalism again. Miners Promise Park
was seriously damaged cosng not only
money to repair, but also the enjoyment
and safety of people who may have used
the park. The Shire reports that, “this year
we have had 4 CCTV cameras vandalized
at a cost of up to $20,000 each.“ While
the Shire and the Police are making great
eorts to protect people and property,
there are limitaons and individuals needto be held accountable. The Shire of East
Pilbara is oering a $1,000 reward for
informaon that leads to the convicon of
perpetrators of vandalism against public
property. Report any suspicious behaviour
to Newman Police on 9175 4000.
Crime Rates DroppedDespite incidents like the above-menoned
vandalism, Police report that as of 15
June 2015, the Newman community has
experienced a reducon of over 24% in
reported crime compared with the same
period last year. This incorporates Burglary
being down 27% and The down 30%.
Despite pleasing results, we are reminded
(yet again) that people are sll leaving keys
in vehicles making them a so target for
oenders.
Snow in NewmanNSHS students presented a fabulous
performance over two nights in June under
the guidance of Performing Arts teacher,
Miss Bragaglia. Students’ performancesencompassed many genre such as dance,
singing and musical instruments; all winter
themed. They also ulised their skills in all
aspects of staging. The show was produced
by students in Years 9 and 10 whilst being
performed by students Years 7 to 12. Well
done to all involved.
NSHS also ran a disco for school aged
children at staggered mes for the various
age groups. This was a great success and
fun for so many.
Newman Movie Series 2015An excing season of movies is underway
being held in the open air for the whole
community. A wonderful selecon will
be presented with screenings on Friday
evenings at Boomerang Oval.
This wonderful series is presented by
Newman Mainstreet Project Inc. and
proudly supported by BHP Billiton Iron Ore
and the Shire of East Pilbara.
Community groups have been engaged
to provide food and drinks at each movie. All movies are PG rated with start mes
between 6:30-7:00 pm dependent on the
sunset. Bring along a picnic rug.

Japanese installaon arst Yasuaki
Onishi has been nominated winner of
the ‘2015 Art at the Heart’ arst-in-
residence programme, over more than 300
expressions of interest. Perhaps oddly, 32
submissions were by arsts from the Perth
suburb of Hamilton Hill.
For six weeks between late July and early
September, the Osaka-based arst will
engage with East Pilbara communies and
work on his own creave pracce. The
residency includes accommodaon, vehicle
hire, a commission budget of $40,000 and
prize of $15,000; an extremely generous
prize by Australian standards.
This residency was oered for the rst
me last year to Australian arst, Hannah
Quinlivan.
Onishi to Interpret the PilbaraBy Sonya Matheson
Yasuaki Onishi is known for his use of
simple materials including rope, plasc
sheets, wire, glue guns and, perhaps less
simple, urea.
He has spent much me undertaking such
residencies around the world including
India, Sweden, Portugal and USA.
His previous installaons explore nature’s
features including mountains, glacier caves
and oceans.
“I create sculpture that visualises ‘negave’
space, which is typically referred to as
blank margin or hollow space,” he said.
With such a beauful natural environment
that we live in, it is hoped that it will inspire
Onishi’s work for all to enjoy.

With the Martumili Arsts’ growing success
and obvious need for space, and with the
community’s desire for greater cultural
opportunies, the East Pilbara Art Centre
was conceived. EPAC is near compleon
and is opening this month.
EPAC will include an exhibion space and
gallery with a variety of funcon spaces. These come with supporng ulity areas
including kitchens, laundry, storage and
the like. The Martumili Arsts will have
their own substanally larger studio space
compared with their current locaon. It will
include indoor and outdoor work areas, a
water tank to keep the deck cool, storage
for camping gear, an outside re pit and
residence for a caretaker.
Having watched the large ‘shed-like’
structure being developed, many people
are looking forward to seeing its nal
appearance inside and out. The ocial
opening will aord that opportunity on
Friday 24 July.

Group’s CompeonBy Bianca Woolhouse, Avant Garde Studio
This year’s Pilbara Photography Group’s
compeon and exhibion will showcase
some of the region’s talented photographers
and our beauful environment.
This year there are amateur, professionaland a children’s category. The photographs
will be on display at the Newman Visitor
Centre between 24 August and 25
September which will be open to view
and vote for the ‘People’s Choice’ award.
There will be 12 winners of the ‘People’s
Choice’ award whose photos will be shared
in a 2016 calendar created and sold by the
Newman Visitor Centre.
Last year’s winners include:
Amateur: Leeanne MurphyProfessional: Bianca Woolhouse
People’s Choice: Peta Hooper
The winners of each category will be
announced on the exhibion’s closing
night 24 September. There are great prizes
across all the categories and if they are not
sold, the photographer will have a beauful
print of their photograph at the end of
the exhibion. For many photographers,
this is their rst experience in entering a
compeon or of seeing their photos in
print.
This year’s compeon and exhibion
is being coordinated by four local
photographers: Bianca Woolhouse (Avant
Garde Studio), Sarah Stampi (Serene
Bedlam Photography), Monique Manson
(Capture This Photography) and Kevin
Mitchell (Kevin Mitchell Photography).
This exhibion is an opportunity for
photographers across the North West
of Australia to share their version of the
beauful Pilbara.
Many thanks to BHP Billiton Iron Ore for
proudly supporng this compeon and
exhibion. The Newman Visitor Centre is
also supporng this event.

Since AAC has been operang in Newman,

Donaons used to be collected, processedand taken to Western Desert communies

AAC started geng so many and decided

money is being made every week to cover
the rent on the shop.
AAC is a not-for-prot and all the money
goes straight back into the Opshop. It is
hoped that enough is made in the next

Besides the loveable pet moggy that stays
inside, many cats are le to roam around
Newman. Back in November 2013, laws
came into aect requiring all domesc cats
over the age of 6 months to be sterilised,
micro-chipped and registered with the
Shire. They are also required to wear a
collar with their registraon tag to assistwith returning them to their righul home.
Unfortunately, many cats are being le
to cause neighbourhood problems and
complaints especially around the light
industrial area. Complaints include noise,
aacks on family pets, and leaving stench
and lth. They are by nature nocturnal
animals.
With the Greening Australia’s visit to
Newman on 11 June with Terri, Bindi and
Robert Irwin came a number of encountersaround town including with the schools,
the Newman Visitor Centre, and the public
presentaon at Boomerang Oval.
Among the fun and entertaining stories was
the important message of environmental
conservaon.
Cats le un-checked may become feral and
cause problems with wildlife, injuring birds,
breeding indiscriminately and spreading
diseases.
The Cat, Bilby and BindiBy Sonya Matheson
One example touched upon during the
public evening presentaon was that of
the Lesser Bilby which is already exnct,
and the Greater Bilby that is listed as
‘vulnerable’ while remaining in only a few
areas of Australia including the Pilbara.
They too are nocturnal by nature.
Sparse populaons sll exist in the Pilbara
and some around Newman. They dig deep,
spiralling burrows to help in avoidance ofpredators and to assist with maintaining
temperatures. The Department of Parks
and Wildlife aims to survey and develop
long-term monitoring of bilbies in the
Pilbara.
Threats to the Bilby include plant
degradaon, bushres, farming, rabbits
and the dangers that feral cats cause the
few remaining Bilby by preying on them.
It has been shown that dingoes keep the
feral cat populaon down. Aerial baing
has tended to work well against the fox
populaon that is also a threat to the Bilby.
Pets have many wonderful benets for
their owners’ mental health and physical
wellbeing. It would be ideal to get the cat
issue under control so that the cared-for
cats can remain as family members in a
safe environment away from any damage
they may cause.
Besides the obvious answer of desexing
and controlling domesc cats, People
for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
(PETA) believe that trapping referral cats
is the most humane opon and oers
suggesons on how to make the process
as low stress as possible for the cat. PETA
oers suggesons as to what organisaons
may be able to assist with rehabilitaon or
other soluons and provision of trapping
systems.
The excitement of the Irwin visit to
Newman also raises awareness of precious
species in our ‘own backyard’.

1. Desexing my pet will make them fat and
lazy.
• Desexing is oen done at an age when
the majority of their growing is almost
completed, a me where dogs are
prone to being overfed. Overfeedingand lack of exercise will make your pet
fat, not desexing. If you feed your pet
an appropriate amount of quality food
and engage in regular daily exercise your
pet should not become overweight. As
for change in personality, desexed pets
may become calmer, easier to train and
will essenally be less frustrated looking
for a mate. Non-desexed pets are more
prone to escaping and jumping fences
and/or even geng in ghts in order
to seek a mate. The good news is thatdesexing will not make your pet lazy.
2. It is healthy for females to have at least
one lier.
• For every season a bitch has, her risk of
developing breast cancer or developing
uterus infecons increases. Desexing
before their rst season is preventave
against breast cancer, which can be life
threatening. Breeding can also result
in birthing dicules for your bitch,
somemes requiring expensive surgery
to save the mum and her puppies.
Females do not need to have at least
one lier to have a fullling life. There
is certainly no medical or behavioural
reason for your female dog or cat to
reproduce.
3. My dog will lose his manliness. He does
not need to be neutered.
• It may surprise you to know that enre
male dogs have increased risk of medical
problems. Prostac disease is alarmingly
high in male enre dogs. In fact, 95% ofenre male dogs over the age of 5 years
will have enlargement of the prostate,
which can be uncomfortable and
make urinang or defecang dicult.
Prostac enlargement can also result in
prostac infecons, abscesses and even
cancer.
• Male dogs who are not desexed can
become highly frustrated if they are
unable to mate. This can result in
him escaping at all costs and even
becoming involved in dog ghts etc. In
fact, almost 95% of our dog ghts and
those hit by cars treated at the Newman
Veterinary Hospital involve an intact
male dog. Desexing them will take awaythe frustraon of them not having a
‘regular girlfriend’ and the undesirable
behaviours associated with that. For
example urinang on everything
including Dr Lucy’s leg, without making
him ‘less of a man’. If you are sll not
convinced and are reluctant to get your
dog the snip, consider trying a Superlorin
Chip, which is a 6 or 12 month reversible
non-surgical opon for male dogs.
4. Desexing is too expensive.
• Spread out over the course of an
animals’ lifeme the cost of desexing
your pet is minimal. People are oen
surprised to know that breeding and/
or the medical complicaons of not
desexing are oen far more expensive
by comparison. Although a safe and
commonly performed veterinary
procedure, desexing your pet requires a
full anaesthec and is considered major
surgery. At the Newman Veterinary
Hospital, to ensure your pet’s operaon
is as safe as possible and to ensure yourpet is comfortable and pain free, we use
comprehensive anaesthec monitoring,
place all animals on intravenous uids,
use injectable and take-home pain relief
and provide a bucket to prevent your
pet from licking at their sutures. If cost
is a big concern consider adopng an
animal that has already been desexed
from an organisaon like SAFE Newman.
The facts are:
• Desexing prevents unwanted puppiesand kiens. There is a huge oversupply
of puppies and kiens in Australia and
sadly so many do not nd homes.
• Desexing has signicant health benets
such as prevenng painful prostac
disease in males and potenally life-
threatening uterus infecons and
breast cancers in females.
• Desexing can help prevent behavioural
problems like urine marking, escaping
and ghng.
• Desexing for cats is now a legal
obligaon with the WA new cat laws
now in force.
• Desexing can save you money in the
long term. Desexed pets are even
entled to a discount for registraon
with the Shire of East Pilbara.
Pet Desexing Myths
DebunkedBy Dr Lucy van der Weide, BScBVMS,

Hydro-MulchingBy Sonya Matheson incorporang informaon
in the CCG’s May 2015 Meeng Notes
In a bale to manage air quality, BHP
Billiton Iron Ore has a number of dust
suppression and monitoring procedures
in place including use of mine de-watering
and eight dust monitors situated within
Newman.
A new iniave was recently trialled;Hydro-mulching. This involved the grinding
up of wooden pallets, wood material,
paper and cardboard; an opportunity
also for recycling. Biodegradable glue or
newspapers were used as binding agents.
BHP put their mixture through a machine
known as ‘The Beast’, which then sprayed
it out.
The papier-mâché mixture was sprayed
over non-paved areas much the same ashydro-seeding has been used for years and
as, at least, one WA company has been
doing in the mining industry for over a
decade.
Benets of this method include dust
suppression, reducing the landll footprint,
less emissions from waste and the ability to
re-use material.
BHP connues to look at opons and
further opportunies as a result of this
trial.
Recycled WaterYour sewage is a leading example of
environmental sustainability thanks to
substanal investment by the Shire of East
Pilbara in an upgrade to its wastewater
treatment plant.
Millions of litres are being conserved by
the treated wastewater’s use on parks and
gardens including the town’s many large
sporng ovals.
Mel Rowe, Rowcon Pty Ltd, stated, “There
is nothing as good as the Shire of East
Pilbara’s processing plant nor is there
anything like it in Western Australia”, cing
it as being one of the most eciently
packaged sewerage plants in the world.
Newman’s high school and the ambulance
staon also use the recycled water to
maintain their grounds. It has also been
used in the past for the local racetrack.
The upgrade included a new clarier
and pumping facility, allowing increased
treatment capacity and consistent
maintenance of high quality levels of
recycled water delivered to town.

BMX is Back in Town ...By Nicole Willis
It has been a 3 year dream of President Dean
Atkins to get BMX back up and running in
Newman, for kids and adults alike. As with
anything in life, it was far from easy and
began with the BMX club engaging with the
Shire of East Pilbara to get back the lease,
thanks to the perseverance of these three
women; Donna Portelli, Heather Coburn
and Kate Swanson who inially assisted in
obtaining the lease and assisted Dean in
securing funding through BHP Billiton Iron
Ore’s Community Grant process. Through
the pure determinaon of a few, the dream
has become a reality.
The team ‘busted a gut’ to source a track
builder and designer, engaging with a
professional track design team at Dirtz
Company. The track was then constructed
by Damien Connelly, whose workmanshipis known throughout the Pilbara on building
both the Hedland and Tom Price tracks.
Flash forward to Sunday 7 June and the East
Pilbara BMX Club Commiee were able to
see their passion pay o when they held
the BMX Open Day in Newman, aer the
proposed open day the week before was
cancelled due to unseasonal rain. Riders
came from as far away as Tom Price, with
over 100 parcipants signing up on the day
to give it at go!
Dean would like to acknowledge and thank
the two professional coaches who made the
trek to Newman to support this sport and
impart their skills onto the next generaon;
Phil Kerosene (Kero) and Naonal Coach
Jade McPherson. Jade commented that he
could not believe how great the track was.
Other feedback by some of the out-of-town
competors was that this could very well
be the best track in the Pilbara.
Dean would also like to thank commiee
members: Steve Edwards (Perth contact),Mick Manson, Glenn Tracey, Tobie Malia,
Richard Elam, Mark Brenzi, Leon Kay, David
Pennington and Neil Malia for all their hard
work to get the track to the high level it is.
Special thanks of course go to all the wives
and partners for also pung up with the
stress of making it all a reality too! Mark
explained the open day as “Organised
Chaos” as there were people constantly
coming through the gate from 9.30 am to 5
pm, making for a successful rst day!
As with anything in Newman, community
spirit goes a long way and we are very
fortunate to have community minded
companies working here. Thanks go out
to BHP Billiton Iron Ore for supporng the
club to get the track o the ground, Geo
from East Pilbara Panel Service, Robbo

The Newman Jetsprint Club hosted a
race meeng on 30 May including several
competors from Perth taking up the
challenge in the lead up to the much larger
event that will be hosted on 15 August.
It was great to see some new competors
and equally excing to see the number of
women pilong these machines, several
making their debut. The newest edion
to Jetsprint racing is the juniors. Several
children, the youngest being 9, took part in
racing boats and some very skilful driving
was noced throughout the event.
The track in Newman requires competors
to really have their wits about them as the
corners are very closely spaced and comeup very quickly at such speeds.
The club’s rst race meeng was in 2012
and the events are geng larger each me
they are run.
Woolworths for the supply of the food
and drinks on the day. CFC Electrical and
Upholstery and Michelle Marlow from Tom
Price who did the registraons
If you or your child would like to get
involved with BMX in Newman, there
are some requirements. Bikes should
have working rear brakes, front brakes
(oponal), no accessories (e.g. reectors,
stunts pegs, chain guards or stands) andhandlebars MUST have covers or plugs on
the ends. Competors need to wear the
correct are; long pants and sleeves, full-
face helmets, closed in shoes and gloves.
You can sign up as a member via the BMX
Australia website and nd East Pilbara BMX
Club in the drop down box.
East Pilbara BMX Club has had their race
meeng on Sunday 21 June and will be
run weekly (at this stage), plus pracce
every week 3:30 pm Wednesday. They are
also excited to announce that they will
be hosng the third round of the North
West Series on Saturday 25 July, this will
showcase riders from all over WA, so be
sure to support our own local riders!
There is sll a long road ahead for the club
in establishing a sustainable track, with the
club applying for grants to install lighng
for night rides, canteen facilies and a
clubroom. If you are able to assist in any
way please jump onto their Facebook page
https://www.facebook.com/groups/NewmanBMX for more informaon.
The club is always interested in hearing
from people who may be interested in V8
sprint boats. You do not need a boat to be
involved in the acon and it is a great day
out.
The beauty of the sport is several
competors 2 team the boat meaning the
same boat can have two dierent driversand two dierent navigators; so up to 4
people can be racing in the one boat. This
helps keep the cost a lot less prohibive
than several other forms of motor sport.
They also have no tyres, no gearboxes and
best of all NO brakes.
The Newman Jetsprint Club would like to
thank the many sponsors that assisted with
the early development of the track, several
local companies that helped turn it into a
reality.
Without the volunteers that freely give
their me, the events would not be
possible.
Major Sponsors who have been with the
club from the very early days and have
always assisted wherever they can include
BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Coates Hire, DTMT
Construcon, the Shire of East Pilbara, and
Mchae Transport Australia (MTA).
Thanks also to the spectators, local and
some who travel great distances, for
coming out and enjoying the day for yourconnued support in keeping this excing
form of motorsport in Newman.
The August meeng is a joint eort between
the only two clubs in WA; Newman and one
in Baldivis, the West Coast Jetsprint Club.
See you all on 15 August for Round 1
when gates open 11.30 am for racing
commencing at 12 pm.
If you would like to know more or nd outhow to get involved, please contact the
local track promoters: Dwayne 0438 740
