Ap pointment of Workshop Architecture

We recently underwent the process for appointing our architect to help us develop a Master Plan for our school. We

are excited to announce we have appointed W orkshop Architecture . As a school we are excited about what this firm

can create for us and we are looking forward to working collaboratively with them to get the best possible design and

outcome for our students. As we move towards Term 4 there will be opportunity for consultation with staff, students,

parents and the community.

Acting Principal Vacancy As many of you know I am expecting my first child in early November. I will therefore be taking some leave up until

the end of Term 2 2020. The Acting Principal position has been advertised and we should have an outcome of that

process by mid-September. I will keep the school community informed and will notify you of my replacement once it

has been confirmed. If you have any queries about this please come and see me.

Atte ndance Parents/Guardians are legally required to ensure their child attends school every day or need to provide an explanation

for their child’s absence. They have an obligation to notify the school as soon as possible on the day of the absence

via either phone, email or Dojo. Please make sure that you also notify the school of any upcoming planned absences

(ie. Holidays, appointments.) A student missing one day a fortnight will miss four weeks in a year, and more than a

year of school by year 10. It is important that children develop regular attendance habits at an early age. Bo ok Week 2019

Book Week is run by the Children’s Book Council and celebrates outstanding books for children. Each year, many

schools and public libraries from all over Australia spend a week celebrating books and Australian authors and

illustrators. The book week theme for the year was ‘Reading is My Secret Power.’ To celebrate all teachers and

students dressed up as characters from their favourite book. We had a parade on Monday which was a great

opportunity to show off the amazing costumes! The Prep – Year 2 students visited the local library where Nikki

(librarian) read a number of stories to the students. We also celebrated by purchasing many of the shortlisted award

Werribee Zoo Excursion

On Friday 16th of August the whole school went to Werribee Zoo for the day. We were lucky enough to have our zoo entry covered by Ardoch which we are very thankful for. When we arrived at the zoo we all participated in a workshop. The Year P-3 students participate in a session called ‘Habitat Heroes’ and the Year 3-6 students participated in the ‘Predator/Prey’ session. Later in the morning we all went on the safari bus tour and were lucky to see giraffes, rhinos, zebras, hippos and many other species up close. In the afternoon all staff and students had the opportunity to complete the Australian and/or African animal trail with many also visiting the education hub and the meerkats. A

huge thank you to the staff and parents who came along to support the students to make the most of this amazing opportunity.

Chess District Competition

Last Tuesday, we (Brad, Tyler and Ruby-Rose) competed in a chess tournament at Western Heights College. We competed against about six other primary schools and there were secondary schools competing as well. Individually we all did really well with Brad winning 3 games and drawing one. Ruby-Rose and Tyler both won two games each. We all won a medal each. We would like to encourage more students to play chess with us in the library at lunch

times and compete next year. It was really fun. Thanks to Mr. Lopez for taking us for the day.

School Council News:

Dear Parents, Carers and Students, School Council have agreed we should remove the "Park" from our school name and be renamed "Newcomb Primary School." Over some time, School Council has discussed and agreed upon a name change. Two main reasons: 1. Identification - where do we really belong, how can we be identified properly when we are referred to or spoken about? 2. Less confusion - we are being confused with another school, including Nelson Park. However we would like to run this proposed action by you before we take further steps submitting our proposed change to wider circles such as City of Greater Geelong and with other schools in the this vicinity. Should you have any objections please forward them in writing to the school office within the next 14 days. It should be noted, that this proposed change (when agreed upon) will not happen immediately, and any changes such as to signage, uniforms etc. are all phased in over time (ie. as new items are required.) Kind regards, Miranda Hurley School Council President and Parent

Thank you Ardoch – Numeracy Buddies On Thursday the 8th of August the 5/6s that have numeracy buddies from Cummins had a morning tea with them. We started off talking with our big buddies and then had some activities. We played 2 truths and 1 lie and then we had 1 minute to draw a picture. We had to guess who had drawn it. Afterwards we took them for a tour around the school and we played a game of gaga with them. At 11:30am we had to say goodbye to our fabulous buddies. It was wonderful meeting them and we look forward to continuing our blogging. – Written by Jak & Jon

Newcomb Secondary – STEM Excursion It was Wednesday the 14

th of August, 456E and 456W where excited to go to Newcomb Secondary College, to do a science

experiment. The teachers they had were Miss Needham and Miss Eyeghraam. I am unsure if that’s how you spell their names but I think it is. The science experiment we did was we put a screw in a plastic cup with a copper rod, water with no chemicals and copper solution. We connected the screw and copper rod with wires and a battery and it turned the screw into copper. I thought it was rust at first, but it turned out to be copper! The second experiment we did, we made a mini garden type thing, we had 5cm of sand at the bottom, 2cm of r ocks after, 2cm of sand on top, and about a cm of soil. Then we put alfalfa seeds on top but leaving about 25% without seeds so then we can dig and get the rocks out once the seeds grow. The 456s enjoyed going to Newcomb Secondary we had a really fun afternoon! The teachers we had were super nice, kind and helpful, I think all the 456s had a great time and we hope to go back soon. – Written by Mia P On Wednesday the 14

th of August all of the 4/5/6s went to Newcomb Secondary for a visit. What we did there was so cool! We

made copper which is from the earth’s structure. After that we made a model where put sand, rocks, soil and some seeds into an ice-cream container. In a few weeks we will have to try get the rock out by not disturbing the soil. Thanks to the teachers and also Rebecca and Makayla from NSC. - Written by Dylan H

Geelong Winter Food Appeal Annual

Toucan Appeal 2019

Monday 5th to Friday 23rd August “Think outside the can”’

help them.

From the Junior School Councillors

On Tuesday the 13th of August the whole school visited Costa Hall to participate in the Geelong Schools Music and Movement Festival. The Year 4/5/6 students performed a number of items on the marimbas and some percussion instruments and wowed the crowd with their skills. All other students participated beautifully as an audience and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the performance of our senior students as well as those of the other schools. Congratulations to our students who represented the school so well and committed a lot of extra time to their rehearsals. Thanks also to Mrs. Fiona Leen who does an outstanding job with our music program and who spent a lot of extra time preparing our students for this special performance.

On Sunday 18th of August we held a Working Bee/Garage Sale. We would like to thank the following people for their assistance on the day: Michelle Stewart, Deb Isbitser, Dylan Hamblin, Graeme Dumbrell, Calista & Jai Pfarrer, Annette & Nick Pfarrer, Ashley & Doug Denmead, Kaye & Bobby Cook, Kylie Spence & Jon O’Brien. We managed to achieve a lot in a short amount of time.

Many trees were pruned, the vegie garden had some maintenance. We filled 2 skips and a truck with excess furniture/storage items that are now outdated, various Big Books and resources were cleaned and taken out of storage from the time of the school fire and many books were sorted and donated in preparation for our library relocation/refresh. Thanks to all those who gave up their Sunday to help us achieve so much!
