Se nior Infants Work-Week beginning Tuesday 5 th May Hi everyone, I hope last week went well and hope you had a nice restful Bank Holiday weekend. Thanks for the lovely photographs this weekend, again you have outdone yourselves with all the fantastic work being done! Your feedback will be emailed on Tuesday. Don’t forget to take plenty of breaks and play outside lots, if the weather allows! I’ve attached this week’s work below, but again, only do what you are able for and don’t stress about what you don’t get done. As always, if you don’t have access to the internet, you can still work on the workbook pages, your non-fiction and fiction readers, and work on lots and lots of practicing of your sight words and sounds. And don’t forget to Read, Read, Read!!! Paired Reading with a parent is a very effective way at increasing reading enjoyment and motivation. Bedtime stories are a fantastic way to incorporate Paired Reading into daily life. Please pick and choose from the below activities and ONLY DO WHAT SUITS YOUR FAMILY , don’t feel that you have to do it all, and remember, TAKE LOTS OF BREAKS to avoid frustration and increase motivation. I’ve added the flyer for an art competition below, if you would like to enter. There is more information on the website here. Also, check out the Stay Home

Se nior Infants Work-Week beginning Tuesday 5 th May

Hi everyone, I hope last week went well and hope you had a nice restful Bank Holiday weekend.

Also, check out the Stay Home Superheroes story I’ve uploaded onto our class page if you haven’t already seen it. It’s a lovely story which might help ease some fears hopefully. Have a good week everyone and as always, any questions or concerns, please ask!

Senior Infants Week beginning Tuesday 5th May

English Literacy: Over the Moon ProgrammeUnit 08 Theme: The Zoo

Oral Language: Dialogue: Look at the character scenes in the poster.

(Skills book page 102) Predict what the characters are talking about. Listen to the dialogues within the story mode section of the story. Afterwards, encourage the child to role-play the conversations with you, adding their own dialogue in.

So much of the Junior and Senior Infants Curriculum is based on oral language, so also keep up plenty of chatting and look for new words and vocabulary.

Reading : (Continue with reader from last week) Non-fiction reader: The Zoo This reader is a non-fiction text. It aims to develop both reading skills and speaking and listening skills. Each page contains a sentence for the children to read. Through a sharing of the reader you can help your child build important literacy skills. Allow your child to read the book at their own pace, there is no rush. If your child is having any difficulty with reading, please let me know and I will advise on how to help.

If your child has already completed this book, they can move on to the fiction reader, Adventures in the Zoo

Writing /Poetry :

Become a poet! Can you write your own poem? Check out the ideas under the ‘Poetry Day Ireland 2020’ post on our class page of the school website, or simply choose your own topic and type of poem. Remember, it doesn’t have to rhyme and it can be just a few lines long. It can be about anything: your favourite animal, your family, school, a pet, toys, football, unicorns, dinosaurs, the summer-anything at all! Maybe you could decorate the poem afterwards and read it to your family. I’d love to read it too if you’d like to take a photo of it!

My News/Diary: Writing simple personal ‘news’ is useful for helping practice handwriting, basic sight words spelling, and conventions of writing such as sentence structure and grammar. Capital letters and full stops are what we

Phonics /Grammar/Sight Words:

It’s very important to keep revising sounds, to practice blending the letters to make words-eg- “c-a-t” says “cat” and practice the sight words and sounds mat which Ms. O’Toole sent home.

concentrate on in Junior Infants, as well as sizing of the letters and using ‘finger spaces’ between words.

Tip: Use a lollipop stick or similar sized piece of card ‘Spaceman’ as a spacer between words can help children with this concept. Your child could decorate it themselves.

For the next 3 weeks , our Aistear theme is ‘The Zoo’.

Aistear Ideas:Over the Moon Aister Resources for The Zoo: https://gmcontent.affino.com/AcuCustom/Sitename/DAM/150/OSI_AP_08.pdf

Our Aistear theme for the fortnight would have been ‘The Fire Station’. If you’d like to, here are some ideas for at home:Socio-dramatic play: Zoo Role-play Set up a zoo using stuffed toy animals, baskets, boxes with straw or shredded paper for bedding Sand buckets, plastic fruit and vegetables and bowls could be used for pretend play for feeding time Toy wheelbarrow, brush, spade, old hose could be used to ‘clean out’ the animal enclosures or transport food to

the animals White coat or shirt, vet’s bag, clipboard could be incorporated for a role-play on a vet’s visit The zoo roleplay pack from Twinkl:https://www.twinkl.ie/resource/t-t-1900-zoo-role-play-pack includes zoo tickets,

opening times, display banner, animal masks, display times, enclosure signs, but you could make your own! You could make a map of the zoo also!

Role-play scenarios: Zoo vet using a doctor’s kit to check the animals’ health Zoo tour guide giving visitors information about the animals Zookeeper feeding and cleaning the animals and their enclosures Visitors studying the map to see which animals they will visit Visitors looking throught the binoculars to see the animals Tickets attendant taking the entrance fee and giving people tickets (practice using pretend money)

Construction/Junk art/Sensory Play: Design and build a lego zoo Look at photos of various zoo enclosures and ask children to plan a zoo. Give consideration to what animals they

will include, where best to place them and how to house them. Next, build your zoo using junk materials and recyclable objects. Children could also create signs for the animals such as ‘Do Not Feed’, and information posters, drawing and labelling various zoo animals.

Make animal masks

Make toilet roll binoculars Paint/draw your favourite animals Make a zoo enclosure Desert sensory tub: using sand, small stones, twigs, succulent or cactus plants, plastic desert animals, eg, snake,

hyena, camel, lizard, coyote (alternatively, print/draw a picture of the animal and stick it to a lollipop stick to make a puppet)

Aquarium: Create your own aquarium using a tub filled with cold water, and blue cellophane, pebbles, variety of sea creature figurines or toys, sand

Small world: Set up a small world zoo scene using plastic or wooden animals, trees, pieces of green and blue paper, figurines

could be used for zookeeper, vet, visitors, etc.Have fun!
