WAYNE'S WORLD 2 Sunday, 8.30pm • GO

While by no means a patch on the original, this second peek into the lives of hard rock idiots -Wayne Campbell (Mike Myers) and Garth Algar (Dana Carvey) -has plenty of chuckleworthy moments. After losing his cable show, Wayne has a dream in which Jim Morrison, from rock band The Doors, tells him to put on a massive music festival 'Waynestock'. Christopher Walken, Drew Barrymore, Kim Basinger and Aerosmith join in on the hilarity.

Fans of neo-r 'n'b, this one's for you. Baltimore's smoothest cats, DIU Hill, are about to embark on their biggest Australian tour to date.

In a career that spans nearly two decades, DIU Hill, have accomplished literally everything an R&B/ Pop group could dream of achieving. A string of number one hit singles, multi-platinum selling albums, movie and television appearances, headlining sold out concert tours around the world, and selling a staggering 30 million-plus records worldwide.

With a catalogue of hits, expect to hear classic like TeU Me, 5 Steps, Never Make a Promise, These are the Times, We're Not Maldng Love No More, to the infectious In My Bed, and How Deep Is Your Love.

PHILOMENA Out Now RATEDM

Directed by Stephen Frears (High Fidelity, Dangerous Liasons, The Queen), Philomena is an utterly engaging experience, thanks largely to a subtle, witty and beautifully balanced script from comedian Steve Coogan, who also stars. When former journalist Martin Sixsmith (Coogan) is dismissed from the Labour Party in disgrace, he is at a loss as to what do until a young Irish woman approaches him about a story of her mother, Philomena, who had her son taken away when she was a teenage inmate of a Catholic convent. Martin arranges a magazine assignment about her search for him that eventually leads to America. Judi Dench is, as always, mesmerising as the title character.

SWANS TOBEKIND Out Now

After their unrelenting 2012 sprawling epic The Seer it seemed that iconic New York experimental noisemakers Swans had reached a zenith in sonic confrontation. Well, after just one listen to To Be Kind it becomes obvious how facetious this comment is.

Like much of Swans' back catalogue, this is not an exercise in throwaway pop -clocking in at two hours, you really have to be committed to discover the gems amid the spooky drones, angular and stabbing guitar lines and frontman Michael Gira's formidable howl. From spacious, psych-inspired jams (Bring the Sun) to full-on post punk mayhem (Oxygen) and even hypnotic hymn-like moments (To Be Kind) this is one album that covers a hell of a lot of sonic territory and one that rewards the astute listener.

Hypnotic and unsettling.

hen three guys, Ray Ahn, Peter "Blackie" Black and Keish de Silva first jumped onstage at the Vulcan

Hotel in Ultimo in 1984 under the rather salacious name of The Hard Ons, little did they know they would become one of the most revered and potent punk rock outfits Australia ever produced.

30 years on, and with a few line-up changes notwithstanding, the band, not normally known for their sentimentality are "patting themselves on the back" as it were, for 30 years in the trenches of punk rock and roll. The band are hitting the road for a run of anniversary shows and, the current lineup of Blackie, Ahn and newest kid on the block, Newcastle-bred drummer Murray Ruse will be augmented by the return of the band's original drummer de Silva who will be taking on singing duties.

"There are three distinct periods of the Hard Ons:' Ahn explained. "The first was from 1944 to 1993, the second one was after Keish left and Peter Kostic (Front End Loader, Regugitator) joined on drums and the third is the current line up with Murray.

"These shows will feature the current

line-up but with Keish singing because he doesn't really want to play drums anymore. We'll also only be playing songs from that period between 1984 and 1993 [the decade that gave the band a formidable 17 consecutive number ones on the Aussie alternative charts]. The rehearsals are sounding great and the shows are going to be heaps offun:'

Thanks to a genre defining mix of punk, psych, bubblegum pop and garage, the band's stock rose considerably, both here and overseas on the back of such genre defining albums as Smell My Finger, Yummy [the band's magnum opus] and Too Far Gone.

Ahn said he put the bands' initial success in Oz indie circles and eventual longevity down to a mixture of

great timing and hard work. "Yeah, our timing was really good - there was a really vibrant pub rock scene in Sydney at the time and there was just so many places to play, so we were playing gigs five nights a week:' Ahn said.

"Also there was a bit of a novelty factor -it was around that time that Australia started becoming more aware of different ethnicities in Australia which made a multi-racial band like us easier to accept:'

Ahn said the band, who after an incredible 17 European tours count the likes of Henry Rollins [the band recorded a version of AC/DCs Let There Be Rock with Rollins in 1991] and Jello Biafra as fans, despite embarking on an anniversary tour are not turning into revisionists.

"We know a lot of really famous punk bands from overseas who just go on tours playing their old stuff and it really is quite sad. If you spend too much time focusing on your "legacy" you're going to tum into an idiot:' he said. ''We will be releasing a new album as well as four three split seven-inches. The first one will be with [experimental jazz combo] The Necks who are one of our most favourite bands in the world. The next one will be with The Melvins then one with an awesome and brutal Japanese powerviolence band The Slight Slappers and the last one will be with the comedian Neil Hamburger who is also an unbelievably talented musician:'

Hold your head up

Originating from Glasgow, John Swan has been on the Australian music scene since he was 14 years old and has since become part of Australia's musical backbone.

In 1978 he released his first album Into The Night and his first major chart success was a great rendition of Tim Hardin's If I Were A Carpenter from the thumping album This Time It's Different.

Success with the next two singles from the album immediately followed. Lady What's Your Name and Temporary Heartache both screamed straight up the charts.

in 1985, Party Boy Paul Christie was considering a new front man and he needed, by his admission, "the best rock 'n.' roll voice in the country". John Swan was asked and he accepted. Along came the Party Boys self titled album which went number one in three weeks thanks to the success of the number one single He's Gonna Step On You Again and two top 10 hits Hold Your Head Up and Gloria.

Fast forward to 2014 and Swanee, with countless gigs under his belt and a brilliant album in 2007'S brilliant Have a Little Faith is still flying the rock and roll flag.

Everybody's lalkln' STEPHEN BISSET

W ith his first foray into musical theatre, Truth, Beauty and a Picture of You - a collaboration

with playwright Alex Broun, premiering last week, Tim Freedman is taking some time away from the smell of the greasepaint with a run of dates to pay homage to one of the 20th centuries great singersongwriters - Harry Nillson - and, of course, Newcastle is high on the list.

"I've been coming to Newcastle for so many years now;' the Whitlams frontman told TE.

"In the early days of the Whitlams, Newcastle was almost like a second home game to us and having the opportunity to present this show in a venue like Lizotte's is very attractive."

Freedman who, with such songs as No Aphrodisiac, Blow Up The Poldes and Buy Now, Pay Later, is no slouch in the singer-songwriter stakes, said while he was aware of Nilsson's big hits like Everybody's Talldn, One, and Coconut, it wasn't until he started focussing on putting the show together that he realised what an intriguing figure Nilsson was.

"I was actually in a meeting with my agent and he suggested doing a Harry Nilsson show;' he said.

"I thought it was a great idea - I knew

WARNER AT THE BAY

his hits and knew of his association with the Beatles and then I started researching him and found out stuff like he never really played live - which is interesting enough - he was a guy that was desperately shy with bad teeth who basically destroyed his career with drink and the like. It is quite a sad arc but a fascinating one, definitely."

Aside from his foray into theatre, freedman said he was keen to sit down at the piano again to write some new songs - it's just a matter of finding the time.

''Yeah I suppose I probably should start writing some new stuff;' he laughed.

"I actually had to write a new one for Truth which came out well so it's good to see that 1 can still do it."

Wadjda [Rated PG] 3·s/5 Reviewed at Tower Cinemas, Newcastle by Melissah Comber

As the first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia and the first feature-length film by a female Saudi director, Wadjda doesn't disappoint.

Wadjda (Waad Mohammed) is an ll-year-old Saudi girl, who wants nothing to more to buy a bicycle so she can race against a boy, Abdullah (Abdullrahman Al Gohani). When she can not get the bike bought for her she enters a Qur'an recital competition to get her hands on the prize money she needs.

Wadjda is a easily-digestible education in the status of women in a nation that the World Economic Forum ranked U9 out of 134 countries for gender parity. As well as ride a bike, Wadjda wants to wear her Converse to school, listen to Western music and wear nail polish, while her classmate is married off, her father takes another wife and she is constantly told to hide from the men.

All in all, it is worth a watch, if not for the insight into a conservative society, than for the delight of seeing a little girl ride a bike.

Godzilla [Rated M] Reviewed at Event Cinemas, Glendale by Stephen Bisset

2/5

While there are a few things that this reboot of the iconic 1950s Japanese monster flick does right, there are a few things that well and truly drag the film down.

So, to the good stuff. The titular monster looks fantastic - much more akin to the Ishiro Honda original than to the ridiculous caricature that was the 1993 reboot. Edwards also shows remarkable restraint when it comes to the (anti?) hero. The iconic monster makes his first appearance over an hour into the film and even then is only given scant screen-time. While this may disappoint some, I felt this helped add to the tension. When he is onscreen, you definitely get a sense of his towering and menacing presence and the fight scenes between Godzilla and the two gigantic cockroach-esque beasties who are hell-bent on destroying the earth, are pure monster-smashing gold. Before Godzilla's onscreen unveiling, we are subjected to way more exposition confusing and overwrought plot and attempted character development than is needed in a film like this.

The Gabriel Emilia Duo grew up in country Victoria where they have been singing together since the tender age of four.

Both girls have been singing and dancing professionally since the age of 16. Now in their 20'S, they spend part of each year writing and performing in Nashville USA. With a Golden Guitar for Best New Talent under one of their belts; the other playing with the likes of Beccy Cole, Troy Cassar-Daley and Jimmy Barnes as a backing vocalist and accomplished guitarist, these guys definitely know what it takes to win an audience over.

With a truckload of old classics and new pop songs up their sleeves (think the likes of Tom Petty, U2, Guy Sebastian, Paul Kelly, Keith Urban and Hank Williams), the girls and their guitars can pull things back for a more subdued crowd with an array of great classic country tracks and modern love songs.

For the Saturday night party crowd, The Gabriel Emilia Band will definitely keep you out of your seat.

Hornet are a high-energy, guitardrive rock group, laying down a retro rock-influenced sound with a modem twist. Hornet's successful style is simple, combining infectious tunes with in-your-face rock. Blowing the roof off every room east-coast Australia has to offer for the best part of a decade, Hornet have released five albums under their original music moniker The Humm, experienced three top 10 singles in the Australian charts, and sold in excess oho,ooo units nationally.

They've headlined the Establishment in Sydney, sold out eight consecutive nights during the Sydney 2000 Olympics, and toured with Midnight Oil, Divinyls, Hoodoo Gurus and Baby Animals, and in April 2008 Rod Stewart. The band gained exposure on numerous television programs in Australia induding Rage, Video Hits, MTV, Channel V and Good Morning Australia.

Quite an impressive list of achievements for an independent band. On the covers scene, Hornet repeatedly wows audiences with their on-stage energy and great mix of tunes, covering AC/DC, The Beatles, The Doors, The Easy Beats, Green Day, Jet, Powderfinger, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Oasis, The Living End, The Strokes and many more.

W hen current indie dance darlings Rufus hit Newcastle next month, punters better be ready for

something quite special. Partly because the trio are keen, after two months in the US and Europe, to celebrate the continued success of their gold-certified debut album Atlas and also because this will be the last

opportunity Aussies will have to see the band for quite some time.

"This is definitely going to be a massive show," singer and guitarist Tyrone Lindqvist toldTE.

''We've been doing this for three years now and we've never really had the opportunity to put on a large scale show so now we're pulling out all the stops with a massive lightshow. Conceptually, we want the World's Within Worlds tour to amplify the escapist

quality of what we tried to create withAtlas. ''We don't want to give too much away, but

we're thinking beaches, forests, desserts, mountains, ice plains - that's probably enough."

Released in August last year, Atlas is continuing to kick several serious goals for Rufus - three songs in the 111 Hottest 100 and a gold status are definitely nothing to sneeze at.

''Yeah, we were really quite overwhelmed with the reaction the album is getting," Lindqvist said. "When we started writing the album, we just wanted to make an album that we wanted to make - so to see people taking to it so well and to get things like a gold record is quite surreal, but very nice at the same time."

After the tour wraps up the band would be packing up stumps and relocating to Berlin to record album number two and Lindqvist said that being out of the comfort zone helps no end in getting the creative juices flowing.

" The massive thing we realised when we recorded Atlas is that the locations you record in do definitely effect the finished product," he said.

''We recorded Atlas in a little farmhouse on the South Coast and I really think taking yourself out of your usual contexts helps you to look at things differently.

"So, we're relocating to Berlin for album number two - there are a lot of artists that we admire who are from Berlin so we're looking forward to soaking up the vibe of the city -it's also a great springboard for us to go and play festivals and shows throughout Europe. I mean Atlas has just dropped in the UK and it is starting to gain a bit of traction over there - it just can be a little tricky being all the way over here in Australia. We will be back though."

I t might only be May, but with such massive shows as Falls Festival, and support slots with Wiz Khalifa, Earl

Sweatshirt & Danny Brown and Public Enemy, it's already proving to be a pretty massive 2014 for Canberra-based rapper Citizen Kay.

After turning many heads with his impossibly infectious, hom laden bam-burner Raise A Glass (featuring the talents of the Bare Knuckle Brass Band), Citizen Kay is hitting the road again in support of his latest single Manage.

While Manage is a much more sparse affair as its predecessor, it is no less of an ear worm with a hook that grabs you almost immediately and a huge, gospelinspired chorus.

Originally born in Ghana, then moving to the Canberra while still very young, Citizen Kay has grown up with an ambition to make his way into the music

scene. Beginning as an aspiring songwriter with a love of hip-hop, he began rapping under the name Kay.

Not long after teaching himself how to rap, he decided to start teaching himself how to make beats and the art of recording. As time went on, Kay gained more experience making beats, finessing his rapping style and writing and recording his music.

Joining Citizen Kay for this show will be Tkay Maidza. The Adelaide-based rapper may've only hit the scene six months ago, but she is already making quite a few waves around the country after her debut East Coast run as well as as debuting in the ARIA chart for her single Brontosaurus.

W hen the Fat Wreck Chords and Epitaph-led US punk explosion took place in the early '90S, there

was one band which cut a swath through its frequently banal pop-punk counterparts with its melodic-yet -angry riffs and antagonising agit -pop lyrics that struck at the heart of everything from organised religion to gay rights, imperialism and the ethical treatment of animals - Propagandhi.

STEPHEN BISSET

The Canadian outfit are heading back to our shores for the first time in three years with their latest and arguably most varied and brutal album Failed States in tow.

"I'm in Winnepeg now, and it's quite cold so, yeah, definitely looking forward to another Australian trip - it's been three years which is way too long:' bass player Todd Kowalski told TE.

The whole idea was to, ldndof,go for brol{e and not worry too much about mistakes

Since Propagandhi released their seminal How to Clean Everything LP back in 1993, they have become synonymous with political activism of an anarchist bent yet have steered away, in recent years, from their early pop-punk roots in favour of a more metal-inspired hardcore aesthetic that seems to suit the unrelenting lyrical vitriol of frontrnan Chris Hannah to aT.

The latest, Failed Sates, as Kowalski explained, is a continuation of this progression toward the heavier side of things but is a much rawer effort than their previous release, Supporting Caste.

"I'd say that we recorded this one in a bit more of an organic way than we have before:' he said.

"The whole idea was to, kind of, go for broke and not worry too much about mistakes, y'know try not to make it so polished.

"To me, it's probably the rawest and most formidable thing we've done!'

Kowalski said that while the fact that there was still a "need" for politically aware bands like Propagandhi, having such a seemingly limitless source of material wasn't necessarily a bad problem to have.

"Me and Chris have a tendency to have songs come to fruition when we have something on our minds, I don't think we'd be very interested in writing songs about partying all the time:' he said.

"Also, we're just really big fans of music - that's the main reason we're still writing music together. The same thing that first blew us away about hardcore in the early '80s is the same thing that still drives us today - that feeling you get when the song takes you somewhere else is pretty special!'

EATOUT ucked away from the hustle and bustle of Beaumont Street's cafe culture, down a laneway, in a quiet courtyard you will find my new favourTHIS WEEKEND

ite restaurant.

Love Tree Is allyouneed

Love Tree Cafe is relatively new to the Hamilton hospitality scene, having opened its doors just four months ago, but already the team are amassing a loyal fan base of satisfied diners and even after just one visit, it's not hard to see why.

We settled into the dinner menu over some crisp bruschetta and a glass of Squealing Pig, a light and fruit sauv blanc from New Zealand's Malborough region. The concise yet creative menu features flavours from across the globe, from African spiced quail to Mediterranean inspired haluomi, mint and preserved lemon cigars, as well as vegan friendly and gluten-free options, playing to Love Tree's philosophy of family and inclusion.

AMELIA PARROTT

For starters, we settled on salt and pepper squid and pork belly. Love Tree's take on the squid was tender, wellseasoned and balanced nicely with a creamy tartar and fresh, leafy salad. Pork belly, however, is where many restaurants get it wrong. Bad pork belly can turn me off a venue for good and will inevitably lead to me telling anyone I can about my sub-par swine experience. But I'll be talking about this pork belly forever and for all the right reasons! Crisp and salty crackling atop perfectly cooked, near melting, pork served with a sweet and spicy apple and fennel puree. I could have eaten it all night.

For mains, on the recommendation of Love Tree proprietor, Fredric, I went for the pumpkin, basil and pine nut risotto -creamy, intensely flavoursome, and not

too sweet, I wasn't led astray. My dining partner opted for the Mediterranean braised goat, again, bursting with flavour, this time of the deep, aromatic Moroccaninspired variety, and unbelievably tender.

The flavour didn't let up even as we sampled the dessert menu. Very spoilt, Fredic insisted we try all three desserts. We begrudgingly (yeah, right!) obliged. Warm fig and walnut pudding with chai spiced caramel sauce, sweet vanilla panna cotta with tart berry compote, topped with Persian fairy floss and rich chocolate truffle mousse cake with berry sorbet and almond brittle. I felt like I'd died and gone to sweet tooth heaven. I couldn't pick a favourite they were all much too good.

You may have to know where to go, but once you find Love Tree Cafe, you won't want to go anywhere else.

Despite being the third single off Sydney indiepoppers The Holidays

sophomore long player Real Feel it seems as though the anthemic "ear worm", Tongue Talk, had been kicking around in the band's kit bag for some time.

"It was actually the flISt song we wrote for the album and, after we fmished it, it just kind of sat there in a comer:' frontman Simon Jones told TE. "It was one of those songs that came to me quite randomly and I just got it down as quickly as I could - a lot of the other songs we really agonised over bit Tongue Talk just came about quickly and naturally.

"It turned out to be a bit of an ear worm because, over the period of making the album, it really stuck in everyone's head. It's also a really fun track for us to play live, because it doesn't take itself too seriously - from the savage hiphop beat we've sampled to the massive guitar solo - it's a bit of a p**s-take but really, really fun:'

While their debut album Post Paradise revelled in a pop grandeur tempered with a rhythmically tropical feel that drew

favourable comparisons to the likes of Vampire Weekend, Jones said that Real Feel represented a a sonic maturation in the band, even though that summery vibe is still there in spades .

"The one thing we didn't want was to repeat what we did on Post Paradise:' he said. "So there is a bit more of a layered feel and also a bit less of that tropical vibe.

"Because we did sit on the album for so long [it was three years between drinks], it was hard to tell what the vibe was going to be once it was released, but it seems people are into it, which is nice:'

With the two previous singles -All Time High and Home - hitting

high rotation on Triple J, and Tongue Talk set to achieve the same it seems they need not have worried. With the single tour wrapping up in July, Jones said the band were keen to hit the studio for an even more experimental album number three.

"We have heaps of songs left over from the Real Feel sessions so there is definitely talk of doing something soon:' he said. "While we were experimenting with the sound on the last album we accidentally stumbled across a new vibe which we're keen to explore. We're keen to head back to the States as we've been getting a fair bit of airplay on College stations. It's just a matter of getting there:'

A fter creating much hubbub with their debut EP, The Penance and the Patience and LP, First Temple

Melbourne-born psych rockers Closure In Moscow have pulled out all of the stops with their swirling sophomore effort Pink Lemonade.

Speaking to TE on their last Newcastle jaunt, frontman Christopher DeCinque told TE that, while it may've been a long time between drinks (with First Temple dropping in 2009) the new album is definitely worth the wait.

"The major chance stylistically with this album is that after we recorded First Temple we recruited a new rhythm section which has opened our sound up heaps more, and this album [Pink Lemonade] was mostly tracked live which I think comes across pretty well on the single and it was more about satisfying ourselves rather than living up to what people think about us and I guess our quality control bar has been raised a fair bit as well;' he said.

"After First Temple, it was a really hard and strange time and the recording process for the new album was marred by various oppressive forces and I found myself doubting if the thing would even see the f***ing light of day which just compounded the anxiety of it all. But, to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel is just awesome. It just feels so nice that the machine is all greased and we're almost ready to unleash it on the world. I just can't wait for everyone to hear it. It's massive;'

According to the band's PR machine, Pink Lemonade was designed to be a voyage that is greater than the sum of it's parts. It is the tale of a hapless fool's descent down the rabbit hole and through the Chapel Perilous - smashing through the fourth wall with a novelty hulk fist, it is a fable laced with subversive sludge that will seep into your minds eye and stir your soul like a rich pumpkin soup.
