FINNTROLL

SCENT OF A WOMAN Saturday, 9.30pm • Seven Two

AI Pacino's passionate and highly emotive turn in this Martin Brest (Meet Joe Black)-helmed drama won him a best actor Oscar and it's not hard to see why.

Pacino stars as a cunnudgeonly, blind and retired Lt Col in the US army. Charlie ( Chris O'Donnell) is at school and is looking forward to going to university; to help pay for a trip home for Christmas, he agrees to look after Frank over thanksgiving.

Saturday, June 21 • Manning Bar University of Sydney Union

According to legend, Finnish folk-metal maniacs Finntroll were conceived when, after a heavy dose of beer and vodka, axeman Somnium (who sadly left our realm for another in 2003) thought it would be a great idea to mix heavy guitars with the melodic 'humppa' style of Finnish polka. When it still sounded good to him after sobering up, the concept was kept and Finntroll and an entire new geme of heavy metal was born.

Their ferociously fun live show, which sees them dressed completely in troll attire right down to their floppy and pointed ears, is a sight to behold. Add to it their powerful death metal riffs, brooding keys, pounding black metal intensity and some super catchy 80'S pop style groove and you have the ingredients for one of the most exciting and otherworldly live shows going.

SUPERUNKNOWN 20TH ANNIVERSARY SOUNDGARDEN Out Now

When it was released back in 1994, Superunknown basically blew the doors off everyone's expectations of what grunge could be. From out and out fully chargedrock numbers, to more reflective "jams", this album truly ran the sonic gamut.

Twenty years on and this album still sounds as fresh and vital as it did back in the day.

Tracks like Spoonman still burn with a brooding rock intensity and Black Hole Sun sounds as though it could've been released last week.

While possibly not as triumphant as Soundgarden's previous album Badmotorjinger, Superunknown is still one hell ofa rock album and, thanks to a blistering new master and extra goodies like b-sides and out-takes, is one that any self respecting rock pig should have in their collection.

MUSIC

Bring on the blues STEPHEN BISSET

I f it's blues you want, then it's blues you're going to get when the cream of the Hunter and

Australia's blues crop descend on the Orana Hotel for the Newcastle Blues by the Beach festival.

Brought you by the folks behind the Sydney Blues and Roots festival, the idea behind the Newcastle version is to unearth the formidable depth of blues talent this region has to offer as well as giving punters a great taste of some world class blues.

Organiser Peter Fricker echoed these sentiments.

"We just put on a similar thing in Windsor and it went really well," he said.

"It was quite crazy actually and the thing is free as well and people always love stuff for free.

"We also run the Sydney Blues and Roots festival and we have just so many bands applying to play - upwards of 500 bands - and we just don't have the time or resources to get around and see them all - so an event like this is great for us because it gets everyone under one roof for us to check out as potential festival

performers and it also gives the bands more of a chance as well."

While the usual supects -Aussie blues juggernauts like Dave Tice, The Shane Pacey Band (pictured), Darren Jack and Genevieve Chadwick are always going to be major drawcards, Fricker said that there was a slew of Newcastle talent he was keen to check out.

"The Jimmy Bazil Project is one

that we've been hearing really great things about and Good Corn Liqour, who have a great local following have been grabbing our attention."

Catch the Newcastle Blues by the Beach festival at the Orana Hotel from Thursday, June 19 to Sunday, June 22. For more information and playing times, visit theoranahotel.com.au

W hile Melbourne neo indie-soul nine-piece impressed pretty much

everyone who heard their debut effort, 2012'S Leave it All Behind (featuring one of the coolest songs of that year, the James Bondworthy The Delinquent), they may've just gone one better with their latest long player Nose Dive.

Still rooted in the soul-drenched feel, that made Leave It All Behind so listenable, Nose Dive bristles with even lusher production courtesy of Magoo (Regurgitator,

Spider bait,) - the brass sounds, well brassier and front-woman Nkechi Anele has never sounded better.

Extensive touring over the past eighteen months has also exposed Saskwatch to more bands than in the past. This has encouraged them to move past any 'soul band' stigma that they may have subconsciously been held down by and organically develop their own distinctive sound. Nose Dive has greater influence on the rhythm section as the frontline trumpets

and saxophones often take a back seat. This only increases the impact of the frontline when it busts through the reverb-soaked lead guitar.

MUSIC

Se_perll The Dead Marines

features three of Australia's most regarded contemporary artists - singer/ songwriter Bernie Hayes, Front End Loader's Bow Campbell and Brendan Gallagher of Karma County.

The long-time friends came together in mid- 2003 to record a swag of new songs - tales of loss, love and the dear school of experience refracted through the

prism of a wine bottle or three.Songslike~body Wants To Hurt Somebody Sometime, I Couldn't Be Less Cool and Six Pack Love Letter. Their debut album New Day was released in 2005 and since

then ,they've played the odd show, played Bryan Brown's Christmas Party, and had a few laughs.

Catch The Dead Marines at the Grand Junction Hotel on Friday, June 13.

Gel schooled In Ihe blues

Often cited as Sydney's "university of the blues", the Foreday Riders celebrate a formidable 47 years in the biz this year and, despite countless lineup changes, two original members from 1967 remain - the King brothers, Ron (harmonica, vocals) and Jeff (guitar, dobro) who continue as happy 'backroom boys' in the current outfit. The front man of the Riders can vary from gig to gig, and at present the band

has teamed up with longtime associate Shane Pacey, of Bondi Cigars fame.

Throughout their long career, they've supported BB King, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Freddie King and Gatemouth Brown. They were also Bo Diddley's backing band in Sydney and were joined on stage by the great Junior Wells on his 1972 tour.

Catch the Foreday Riders at Lizotte's on Thursday, June 12.

Wagons keeproilin

After wowing pretty much everyone with his idiosyncratic solo effort, Expecting Company - a mini album featuring duets with the likes of Alison Mosshart (The Kills), Patience Hodgson (The Grates) and Robert Foster (The Go Betweens), Henry Wagons is back on deck with his long serving and trusty backing band and with a lurching, bombastic and brassy album in Acid Rain and Sugar Cane.

With smatterings ofhoms, strings and lush, live sounding production, Acid Rain and Sugar Cane could well be Wagons most cohesive and fully realised album.

To help achieve this live vibe, the band enlisted the services of former Bad Seed Mick Harvey, whose previous production credits include the likes of PI Harvey, to co-produce.

"We basically thought that if we're going to relinquish control to someone, Mick Harvey is definitely a good choice;' he said.

"He has such an impressive resume and he really made us want to press our metaphorical shirts each day - you know, we really wanted to impress him and I think this really helped raise the bar creatively for us?'

Doyou wanna bump?

When it comes to the hedonistic heyday of disco, with such dance floor fillers as Ma Baker, Rasputin, Daddy Cool and Rivers o/Babylon, few could hold a candle to Eurodisco juggernaut Boney M.

Now, 38 years after original members Maizie Williams, Bobby Farrell, Marcia Barrett and Liz Mitchell hit musical paydirt with the flirtatious number Daddy Cool, it seems people still can't get enough of Boney M with the band heading to Newcastle this weekend.

When it comes to hits, with more than 159 million album sold as well as 18 platinum and 15 gold albums to their credit, Boney M certainly have no shortage.

Originally created by German record producer Frank Farian (the impresario behind the infamous Mill Vanilli), Boney M quickly found themselves at the forefront of the disco scene.

38 years on and that swag of disco gold still sounds as fresh, energetic and as fun as ever.

Boney M are truly one of the most beloved bands to emerge from iconic disco era.

Bulls in the China shop STEPHEN BISSET

Since the release of their sophomore EP, Dazed, Central Coast-based indie-folk-moody-pop outfit Elliot

the Bull certainly haven't been resting on their laurels. After the EP dropped in April, the band hit Aussie roads for the obligatory launch tour before heading over to China for a few dates before heading to the Northern Territory for a quick run.

With barely enough time to scratch themselves and as testament to their tireless work ethic, the band are gearing up to hit the road again, this time on the Riding In Vans With Bulls tour which will swing by Newcastle next week.

"I've been playing in Newcastle since I was 14 years old as a young tacker playing in punk bands and it's always been a great place to play:' guitarist lake Dobson told TE.

Dobson said the band were completely blown away by their recent trip to China, despite playing there a couple of years ago

"The first time we went over we literally had no idea what to expect or what was going on - it was the biggest culture shock:' he said.

"The first show we did on that tour was

in a club in Beijing and there were, like, 20 kids there and then the second show was at a festival and we stepped out in front of 6000 people which was just crazy.

"This time, though, was like 150 per cent better. Our first show was at a festival - kind of like the Chinese equivalent of the Big Day Out and we played to 16,000 people. Crazy?'

Dazed, produced by Lachlan Mitchell (The lezabels) who helmed the band's debut, has been getting some pretty serious wraps around the traps since it dropped, not least for its expansive, layered and atmospheric slice of baroqueesqe pop -the lead single Colourblind and it's accompanying fIlm clip - one of the most intricate and mesmerising Aussie clips in recent memory.

''We definitely knew that Colourblind was the strongest song on the EP and we came across so many brilliant fIlm-makers and artists when we started work on the clip. In the end, we were approached by the company Oh Yeah Wow, who have done clips for Gotye - they heard the song, loved it and had a proposal for us a week later. It's completely stop-motion animation and took around six months to complete - but it just fits so well with the mood of the song?'

W ith a freshly inked management deal and a major competition win under their

belt, Blue Mountains "dirty roots" outfit Eddie Boyd and the Phatapillars are definitely striking while the iron is hot.

The boys recently took out the prestigious Byron Bay Bluesfest Busking Competition - the same camp that helped the likes of Marshall O'Kell and the Hussy hicks get a leg up - as well as signing on with Rhythm Section Management.

"After we won the camp, we got to play on the Bluesfest lineup which was just amazing;' Boyd told TE.

''We're also really stoked to have signed with Rhythm Section. We feel that we're in really good hands with those guys -they really know their stuff."

Boyd said that there was a sense of things coming full circle with the Bluesfest win as the festival was intrinsically tied to the band's inception.

"We started playing together in a punk band in high school and then, in 2012, I headed up to Byron on my own for the busking camp;' Boyd explained.

"I ended up as a runner-up and got to play in the busking tent at Bluesfest so I thought I'd better get a band together so I called the boys, they headed up to Byron and the rest is history."

With momentum clearly picking up for the band, Boyd said they were planning to head to the studio next month to start work on their debut EP and, with a sound that is equal parts roots and riff-driven rock and roll, and a thumping live show to match, Boyd said punters could expect that to be reflected in the recording.

"We are a very raw sounding band and we really want that live vibe to show on the recording;' he said.

A fter spending the last couple of years cutting their teeth on the live circuit and gaining quite

a reputation for their aturbulent stage show, Sydney-based country punkesque seven-piece Little Bastard are currently enjoying the spoils of their debut long player - an album that traverses genres - from nostalgic anthems and brooding ballads to up-tempo "party punk" - and has had music wags literally clambering for complimentary superlatives.

"We all thought we had made a good album so it's always nice to do something that people seem to get;' vocalist and percussionist Ross Tipper told TE.

Recorded in just eight days with producer-of-the-moment Lachlan Mitchell, Tipper said the band took a "no bulls**t" approach to the sessions and while they wanted to capture the "spook" of their live show on the album, they didn't want to jus recreate a live set.

"The album was written over the last couple of years but the actual recording was done pretty quickly;' Tipper explained.

"We did want to keep that live feel on

the record but we didn't want it to be, you know, a bunch of guys in a room and one mic - we didn't want the album to be the same as a live gig - it had to be a little bit more.

"We basically tracked all the guitars, drums and bass live and then went back and sprinkled some extra magic on it:'

"Lachlan was just great, too. He helped us keep a level head and there were no Spinal Tap moments or anything, something you'd kinda expect when you have eight people in a room together - he

really was the captain steering the ship!' Tipper said that, after the tour wraps

up, the band planned to take a bit of a break before gearing up for release number two.

"After this tour, we're all going to be sick and poor, so we'll be recovering a bit and going back to our day jobs but we've got a bunch of songs already written for our next release!'

For now, though Tipper said Newcastle fans could expect the time of their lives when Little Bastard hit the stage.

''We just want everyone to have the best time ever because that's what we're always after when we're onstage!'

Happy as pigs In mud Having just caught our collec

tive breath from the behemoth that was the Gumball Festival's

tenth anniversary in April, news that its "slightly rebellious" sister event, Pigsty in July, is welcome, to say the least, for gig pigs everywhere.

The one-day affair is raising the energy levels with this year's event, with a great lineup that includes the King of the North (pictured), Mojo Juju, Steve Smyth Wolf and Cub, Sydney soul funksters Gang of brothers, psych rockers The Walking Who, bodacious party duo The Stlffys, sevenpiece soul outfit Beaten Bodies and, of course, Dashville favourites the Dashville Progress Society.

Pigsty in July is touted as a day of luxurious indulgence, focusing on warm winter foods and an array of specially selected boutique beers, local wine and naughty cocktails. Surrounded by the warmth of food, friends, open fires and a bunch of great bands, the idyllic exclusive atmosphere of PigSty is the perfect escape from the winter flats. The boutique event which features a '2nd hand formal' dress code, was held last year at Dashville as part of the biennial Singleton Arts Festival and by popular demand is back bigger and better for its second year at the site. Capacity of this event is limited to 500, it is intended to sell out, so grab your tickets early to avoid missing out.

Back in ourarllls again STEPHEN BISSET

W hen budding thespian Kaaren Ragland was recruited by original Supreme Mary Wilson

to be part of a revitalised Supremes lineup in 1977, little did she know that, some 35 years later she would still be flying the flag of one of the greatest girl groups of all time .

''Yeah, who knew:' she laughed. "It was just so overwhelming when I

was asked I mean, I loved the Supremes growing up and to get that opportunity was just amazing. I mean, I had never been to Australia before and the next thing I know, I'm planting trees on Dunk Island:'

Nowdays, the Supremes flame still bums bright with Raagland who will be bringing her show The Sounds of the Supremes to the region next week.

Raagland told TE that while trying to squeeze all of the Supremes hits into one set might be a little problematic, the show promised to be a hell of a lot of fun.

"They have so many great songs and

obviously we can't play them all but all of the big, big hits will be in there, for sure:' she said.

"Hopefully we'll give folks one great party that they won't forget in a hurry:'

Featuring the undeniable talent of the great Diana Ross and the formidable vocal triumvirate of Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson and Betty McGlown, the Supremes were the jewel in the Motown crown. With a song list that includes such American standards as Stop! In The Name of Love, Baby Love, Reflections, Stoned Love and You Can't Hurry Love, The Supremes along with Motown's long list of hitmakers helped to influence a generation.

For Raagland aside from the inherent talent within the group, the heart of the Supremes' endurance lay in the genius of the songs.

"Motown had such wonderful writers - people like Holland-Dozier-Holland who wrote a lot of the Supremes' hits and the likes of Ashford and Simpson- these guys really knew how to write a timeless
