Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks
Home of PGER Paul Helsel
2017 February 2017
Dear Members,
January once again was a busy month. We had fun
Lodge activities and the MD DE DC winter workshop
was held. So much information was shared so we can
hit the ground running with all of our programs in the
New Year. You can be very proud that Newark Lodge
continues to be a premier Lodge. We continue to run
many Elks Programs that support our community,
youth, and Veterans. I encourage all officers,
committee chairs, and members to attend a District or
State Workshop. They are both informative and fun.
Go to mddedcelks.org for more information and to
register for the next workshop. The form is also in this edition. It will be in Kent
Island, March 24th-26
th. Our Grand Exalted Ruler will be attending the workshop.
February is an important month. I encourage you to attend our meetings this
month. We will have nominations for officers at the first meeting on the 14th. Then,
we will hold elections on the 28th. Also, we will be forming our new committees and
will be looking for new members. Consider finding time in your schedule to help
with one of the many committees or activities that make our Lodge able to do what
we do to support our youth, our community, & our Veterans. Some of the areas in
need of volunteers are Drug Awareness, Camp Barrett, Americanism, Veterans
Service, and Youth Activities. Also, an area that needs extra support is Bingo. It is
held every Thursday, and our Bingo Chair, Mary Ann Izzo, who is also the Lodge
Secretary, needs your help. The amount of time you commit to is up to you; a
couple of hours a month, or become the Bingo Chair! If you have new ideas or
questions, please contact me, an officer or committee chair.
Currently the PER (Past Exalted Ruler) 10 week club is underway. By now you
have received your tickets in the mail. If not, they are also available at the Lodge.
All proceeds from this fundraiser go to making improvements in your Lodge.
Please participate, and good luck!!
We are a fraternal organization that depends heavily on the backs of volunteers. If
many more step into the arena, the weight is much lighter for all. PLEASE make
your time as an Elk the best for you, for our Lodge, our youth, community, and
Veterans.
Lastly, time is running out!!!! Please get your ticket for the car raffle. All information
is in this newsletter.
Remember, we are better together!

House Committee News
Members,
The House Committee has been working dili-gently performing an in-depth analysis of our budget. After much consideration, the commit-tee found it necessary to increase the price of our goods at the bar. This was after a review of individual liquor costs, increases in delivery costs, and a cost comparison with other local Lodges & clubs. In addition, we are updating our Lodge and will be getting a credit card sys-tem which will cause further expenses. The price increase will go into effect on April 1
st. This
change coincides with the new fiscal year.
If you have any questions or concerns, please Jack Davis @ [email protected].

MONTHLY VA PIZZA PARTY
Just a reminder, our Lodge hosts a pizza party for the residents of the VA hospital every month. The next one is Wednesday February 8th.
Many have expressed interest in volunteering to support programs for our Veterans when you were interviewed for Lodge membership. This is a great opportunity to spend only 1-2 hours each month to do so. It’s easy and it’s fun talking with our Veterans.
For more info, contact Guy Boniface, (302-547-8217).

Members,
ENF is offering an exciting new recognition program. It is
for new donors beginning with the 2016 fiscal year. Keep
donating annually to ENF and receive the Road to Renew-
al Pins! Our Lodge currently has 37 members eligible for
the program. The members listed below will be awarded
the Great Heart Pin! They qualify because they gave their
first donation to ENF in 2016, and have followed with a
second donation this year. As ENF Chair, I will be award-
ing the pins at the February 28th Lodge meeting. If your name is on the list below, please attend the meeting to receive
your pin and be recognized for your generous donation to ENF! Please RSVP to me @ [email protected] to let me
know if you will be attending. Currently our Lodges PER Capita is $12.16.

DAVID E. WOLCOTT'S DREAM FOR THE ARMY OF HOPE
David E. Wolcott was born on February 5, 1949 in Easton, MD, and he was a Civil Engineer by trade. In 1979, he married the love of his life, Connie Wol-cott and they enjoyed 36 years of marriage before her passing on April 22, 2015. Dave passed shortly thereafter on August 6, 2015.
Dave was initiated into the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks on Janu-ary 23, 1986.
He was a leader by example as well as in title. He not only served in his own Lodge, Easton #1622, but also served in many positions for the Maryland, Delaware & District of Columbia State Association.
Dave was an Elk that really made an effort to live by the principles of our Order...
Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity. Extremely patriotic, he was quick to remind us of the importance of our Flag as the symbol of our Nation and our responsibility to the folks that served in our armed forces. He often reminded us of our duty to foster a spirit of Patriotism and Americanism in our community.
Early in 2015, the Maryland, Delaware and District of Columbia State Association began plans to implement an Army of Hope. The purpose of the Army of Hope would be to assist all currently serv-ing active duty military and reserve personnel, those wounded and the families of our Fallen He-roes. Dave knew funding for this Committee would be needed. His love and admiration for this group of service people and their families inspired him to come up with a plan to do just that.
With the encouragement and support of his wife, Connie, also an extraordinary Elk, he purchased a 1955 Ford 2dr Crown Victoria which he donated to the Maryland, Delaware & District of Columbia State Association to raffle off for the purpose of raising the needed funds. His dream of increasing service to our veterans and servicemen and women through implementation of The Army of Hope program was becoming a reality.
Shortly before his death, he requested that our State Association go forward with this dream of his. He felt confident that our Membership would embrace this additional service to those who have served us and their families as we continue to enforce our mantra "So long as there are Veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them".
As we march forward with Dave's Dream, please keep in mind that the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is a strictly volunteer organization, and all proceeds from this raffle will be used strictly for the purpose of benefiting those served by The Army of Hope, with no administrative costs.
Army of Hope Mission Statement
It is the mission of the MD, DE & DC Elks Association “Army of Hope” to bolster our existing Veter-
ans programs by finding and filling voids in services and support wherever they exist. To assist
the families of our Active Duty Military Servicemen and women, National Guardsmen and Reserv-
ists called into service and deployed in defense of our nation anywhere in the world. Additionally,
to provide additional support for our returning Wounded Warriors and the Veterans of past con-
flicts while at the same time remembering and honoring those men and women who made the ulti-
mate sacrifice in defense of our great Nation.
