We were frojubled considerably by t h e r a v a g e s o f t h e cabbage butterfly, Pierisrapae, or rather b y i t s larvae. The butterfly w; ts seen flying about the plants ^arly in s u m m e r , a n d i p t h e lat- ter part of June the first b r o o d of cater- pillars appearel. These did less de- struction, however, than the second b r o o d , w h i c h c a m e a b o u t the middle of August. In order to test the efficacy of a f e w o f t h e so-called remedies f o r t h e c a b b a g e w o r m , we confined some o f t h e caterpillars i n a bottle and noted their behavior undet* various treatments. One specimen confined for three hours in a b o t t l e p a r t l y f i l l e d w i t h b l a c k pep- per crawled away discolored b y t h e powder but Apparently ^unarmed. T h e s e c o n d , repeatedly immersed in a solution of saltpeter, a n d a third i n o n e of IJoracic a c i d ] e x h i b i t e d little indica- tions ©f inconvenience. Bisulphide of carbon produced instant death when applied t o t h e Worm, though its fumes were not effectual. The fumes benzine as well a s t h e liquid caused al- m o s t i n s t a n t death, but when applied small§whitish excres- on the leaves. Hot water applied t b t h e cabbage destroyed a p o r t i o n o f t h e worms, causing also t h e l e a v e s to t u r n y e l l o w . One ounce of saltpeter a n d t w o pounds common salt dissolved ik t h r e e g a l l o n s of water formed an application which was partly efficient. The Joaost satisfactory remedy tested, however, consisted o f a mixture of \ lb. each oi h a r d s o a p and kerosene oil ini t h r e e g a l l o n s of water. This was applied August 26, and examination the following day showed many, i f n o t a l l , of the worms destroyed. Th^ growing cabbage presents such a m a f s of leaves in which the caterpillars may be concealed that is hardly possible t o r e a c h all t h e w o r m s a t o n e application.
