New York Silicon Alley  Weekly Newsletter ISSUE 20 JANUARY 2012 Oh what a week it's been! A few of us NYSA organizers attended the Emergency NY Tech Meetup this past Wednesday. The meetup was held in protest to PIPA and SOPA legislation currently being debated in DC. If you were part of the 1,500 - 2,000 attendees, I'm sure you'll agree a lot of valid points were made and the rally was handled in a respectful manner, which was great to see and experience. More information on PIPA and SOPA can be found at  americancensorship.org . To find out where our members of Congress stand, 'yay' or 'nay', check out SOPA Opera. If you're in the NJ area (or are up for a PATH ride) do take part in today's Rally Against PIPA at 1pm. The NYSA listserv is open, so do share your experiences with the rest of us! Additionally, we are happy to announce Taap.it as a recurring event sponsor, along with the Seidenberg School of CSIS at Pace University. Look forward to seeing you next Tuesday for Tech Startup Night. Just an FYI - when you arrive, you'll be greeted by the smell of freshly baked goods (there's a bakery on the same floor). See you then. Have a relaxing and productive weekend. Cheers, Luisa New York Silicon Alley Group @techmeetupsNYSA

Apple Navigates China Maze  – January 18, 2012

Apple Inc. is increasingly finding itself pinched between the promise and perils of doing business in China. That challenge was thrown into sharp relief by a pair of

developments Friday. Under pressure from activists in the U.S. and abroad, the

company released a 27-page report detailing working conditions throughout its

supply chain, which sprawls throughout Asia, but especially China.

At the ABNY breakfast this morning, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said growing New

York’s technology sector is key  to improving the state’s economy. She said she

hopes to help high tech companies flourish in New York by pursuing new legislation,

New York rising: Brooklyn gets its first VC fund  – January 17, 2012

With all the momentum around New York’s burgeoning tech scene, the focus has

been on Manhattan and various startups taking off there. But Charlie O’Donnell, a

Hello VentureBeat: I’m your new sleuth

in Silicon Alley, serving up scoops with your morning coffee  – January 16, 2012

I didn’t know much about the Silicon Alley scene until the day I stumbled into NYC

Resistor, a hacker collective in Brooklyn. That was about three years ago. The air

smelled like burning metal and people were talking about laser cutters and 3D

printers and robots that dispensed drinks. It was a little slice of geek heaven, I

thought, and maybe a good focus for my career as a journalist.

Can New York City ever be the next Silicon Valley?  – January 16, 2012

For years now different cities not only in the U.S. but across the world have hoped

to become the next Silicon Valley but none of them have slightly come close to

compete against the Tech Capital of the world.

Collaborative Consumption Reaches the Garage  – January 14, 2012

That Dodge Nitro sure looks like a sweet ride. Parked in an alley near Boston’s

Symphony Hall, it’s just waiting to be boosted. My accomplice and I pull our winter

caps low and sidle up to the white SUV. I pull out an electronic card, pass it along

the windshield, and hear a reassuring click as the door locks release. We quickly

duck into the seats, find the hidden ignition key, and start it up. No alarms. I step

lightly on the gas and we pull away.

JWT Creative Hires Represent Needed Sizzle  – January 14, 2012

With the appointment of new creative leaders from Crispin Porter + Bogusky and

Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, JWT CEO Bob Jeffrey seems to be trying to regain

the star power he lost when Ty Montague left in 2010.
