5 people you’d like to have

over for dinner:

• Lin-Manuel Miranda - the man who wrote Hamilton is a lyrical genius and seems like a nice guy too.

• Mr Taylour - to keep all the other guests entertained!

• Barack Obama - an inspiringly humble and honest man.

• Alan Lomax - I'm reading a book about him at the moment - he was one of the first people to travel around America recording musicians in the 1920s and 30s. A very cool job!

• Sam Cooke - my favourite singer, for the after-dinner entertainment

4 books and/or films you’ll

never forget:

• A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry - a beautifully writtenbook set in Mumbai. I love books that can transport you todifferent parts of the world.

• The secret diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 3/4 - a hilariousbook that I read many times when I was younger.

• The Cairo Trilogy by Naguib Mahfouz - a very long, butaddictive and brilliant family saga. Like an EgyptianForsyte Saga.

• The Merchant of Venice - William Shakespeare - a play, not a book, but it has to go on the list for seeming socompletely relevant today over 400 years after it waswritten.

3 foods you’d have for your

last meal:• A Cornish pasty to remind me of home, from Pearce's

butchers in St Austell

• Vada Pao - an Indian snack I became addicted to inMumbai

• Rice and beans - the food I have lived off in Tanzania forthe last five years!

2 places you’d love to visit:

• Dharamshala - I went to India for the first time this year and loved it. I would love to go back and watch some IPL cricket in this amazing stadium.

• The Danakil Depression in Ethiopia - possibly the hottest place in the world!

1 day you’ll never forget:

• Reaching the top of Mount Kilimanjaro - the mountain Icould see out of my window when I lived there.

There have been some very exciting thingshappening in the library recently! You mayremember from the end of last term that weran a Winter Reading Challenge. We askedstudents who have read a book over theChristmas holidays to write a review of it forus, and we’re really impressed with all thepieces we had in. There were a lot of greatreviews, but the winners are Tia Pattersonand Mary Agyemang – well done to bothof you!

We would also like to congratulate Adam-Malik Vaiksnoras in year 7 for being the firstmember of Literacy Squad to complete hisaward! In other news, this year we’rerunning a brand new Ark Book Award. This istaking place across lots of Ark schools tohelp us find our favourite book of the year. There are 4 shortlisted books, and we wantas many people as possible to read themand rate them out of 10! We’ll announcethe winning book later in the year. Thebooks are are: Illegal, a graphic novel byEoin Colfer and Andrew Donkin; TheLoneliest Girl in the Universe by LaurenJames; Kick by Mitch Johnson; and TheHarder They Fall by Bali Rai. They’re allavailable in the library now, so come andgive one a try.

Illegal by Andrew Donkin

Ebo: alone. His sister left months ago. Nowhis brother has disappeared too, and Eboknows it can only be to make thehazardous journey to Europe. Ebo's epicjourney takes him across the Sahara Desertto the dangerous streets of Tripoli, andfinally out to the merciless sea. But withevery step he holds on to his hope for anew life, and a reunion with his sister.

This book tells the story of a boy whobecomes a refugee and goes in search ofa new life. At times it can be quiteemotional, especially because Rigano’sdrawings are so good and show very clear, believable facial expressions.

It’s a beautiful book and a great story, especially as the character is so likeableand goes through some dramaticexperiences! If you like graphic novels, orjust want to read a story about a journey fullof adventure, you should definitely try this –and then give it a rating for our Ark BookAward.
