We learnt that you can do CPR by doing 30 compressions (2 x 15 lots) and 2 breaths, or by just doing compressions until an ambulance comes if they have not responded.

5HG Accepted their certificates

after completing their training with Fred. Tahlia and Ashlee kindly demonstrated how to safely roll someone into the recovery position. Fred told us that we can also use our arm and knee as a lever if we need to.

S ports Shorts - Regional Football Last week, the school’s football team played in the regional finals for a place in the state quarter

finals. The standard of football was very high and Brentwood Park started the day off well. Our first game was won easily by 6 goals against Wallarano P.S. Our team then had to play again immediately against Peninsula North P.S. For the majority of this game we were down and it looked like we would eventually lose. The team, however, persisted and 2 quick goals got us over the line. Without a break, the boys had to play a 3rd game in succession against St Patrick’s Mentone for a place in the final. The first half of the game was a close tight contest. Unfortunately, for the boys, we were outplayed and outclassed, eventually going down by 8 eight goals. We then played a consolation game against St Catherine’s. This game was played in good spirits with all of the team playing out of position. We ended up losing by 19 points. I was extremely proud of the whole team and the manner in which the boys conducted themselves. They certainly did give their best efforts throughout the day. A huge thanks to parents - Donna, Sandra, Paul and Adam for transporting the team. Your assistance was greatly appreciated. Thanking you for your continued support.

Jim Narayan, Health and Physical Education

L earning Centres are an important component of our literacy program in 2/3C and 3LP. The children work in groups, rotating around a series of activities covering rich opportunities for them to enhance both their written and oral comprehension skills. Each session begins with a

whole class focus, often based around the content of a ‘big book’. For example, focussing on unfamil-iar vocabulary. On a weekly basis, each group works with the teacher in a ‘guided reading’ session. The other work stations allow for independence, enrichment and co-operative learning. Activities in-clude opportunities to research on the computer; oral story telling/dramatisation of text; comprehen-sion activities based on the students’ point of need; and creative activities in response to the text.

The children in 2/3C and 3LP have recently participated in a sequence of work to help assist them develop the following understandings: Aboriginal culture is a rich and dynamic culture. Aboriginal people play a significant role in both traditional and contemporary society. Aboriginal culture is intrinsically bound to the land through stories of The Dreaming. The extended family is an integral part of all Aboriginal communities; and Aboriginal people place a great importance on oral tradition.
