The exciting new technology, will introduce thermal resistant aluminum conductors that are able to transfer much higher density currents per unit, whilst minimizing the line sag at high power line temperatures, without exceeding maximum operation tensions. The conductor will be used in the overhead transmission line networks of EETC, and offers fantastic benefits for EETC who must meet increasing demands for electrical supplies with the growing industrial and urban populations of the country. Whilst the new conductor is similar to current conductors, at least in weight, it represents a technological breakthrough. In the past, improving the function and efficiency of electrical transmission networks, had proved almost an impossible challenge because of the enormous amount of time and work it would take to rehabilitate every electrical transmission line within the network. With the introduction of this new conductor, which was recommended and implemented by Giza Systems, the company is able to offer an effective solution to the problem without compromising financial or time constraints, as well as, ensuring only minimal rehabilitation of the conductor, while maintaining the use of other existing network elements like towers, foundations, and licenses. The fact that the conductor accounts for the limitations of the line’s tensile strength and sag capacity will triple the overhead lines’ transmission efficiency times in comparison to current line capabilities. This technique for improving overhead transmission line efficiency was developed in 1971, and although it has been implemented in several countries throughout the world, this project will be the first time for such a technique to be implemented in Egypt, and the first time for Giza Systems to use this technique and technology. The project offers exciting opportunities for the entire electricity industry in Egypt, and also adds to Giza Systems' well established reputation as a pioneer in the field of technology solutions and services. pumped into the net, we hope that “SCADA “ willhelp us to figure out the reasons of water loss anddeal with it. Costs ofSCADA is justified by surplusesit will provide. We believe that the most importantinvestment for us currently is to invest in informationtechnology to update different processes and developthe infrastructure and management system to improveproduction and quality.

Q : How can this advanced systemintegrates with other systems within thecompany?A : We are working now to execute the instantcontrolling system in plants, water elevation units, and networks. In parallel with that we execute anotheradvanced system for billing to solve any problemslike inability to read water meters either due to lackof water meters or because the worker didn’t do hisjob. We have solved the first problem by establishing4 factories in Egypt for the production of water meters, which produced 800,000 water meters last year. For the second point, this advanced system enabledus to use hand-held computers that the worker caneasily use to register the readings of water meters ina specific place. The worker transfers the data intoanother computer that is connected to our informationbilling system to print out the subscriber’s billimmediately. This system gives the worker any chanceto neglect his task in reading the subscriber’s bill inany place. This system now covers all of Cairo excepta few select areas which are challenging to installwater meters. In addition, the company now executesa new system for complaints which was developedin cooperation with the Ministry of ManagementDevelopment. We also executed systems forgeographical information over the internet anddeveloped a guide in El Behira governorate to allowthe employees in the call center to receive complaintsthrough the hotline125 and know location of thesubscriber through a computer that shows also thewater lines that existed in that region.

Q : What about the important challengesthat face company now?A :The first challenge we face in Egypt is inunderprivileged areas. For example, in Cairoalthough the company was under intensepressure to connect water to manyunderprivileged areas like El- Hagana, and El-Marge, workers can’t collect water bills in theseregions because people don’t accept our workersin these areas coming to collect the bill. Thesolution adopted by some countries includingItaly is to cut water supply in these areas. Wewon’t apply that solution, but behavior frompeople in these areas has created manychallenges for us. We’re working to deal withthese issues efficiently.

Q : What about information technologyin operating and maintenance?A : We have many systems for operation andmaintenance. We have systems that check theperformance of water pumps and provide reports forrequired maintenance processes with accuratemaintenance duration. This preventive maintenanceprocess prevents problems and helps to protect ourinvestments in water plants, engines, and pumps.

Q : What about improvement in humanresources who utilize these systems?A : We are very interested to develop our humanresources and improve their capabilities in dealingwith these modern systems. Human wealth is the“driving force” behind operating the systems andresponsible for managing it efficiently. We have aprogram which was launched in part from a Germandonation for training in management, operating, maintenance and financial trends. We hope to developfurther training plans in human resources and wewill sign up cooperation protocol with the Ministry ofEducation to establish a technical school for waterand waste water workers. This school will open nextSeptember, joining the graduates of prep schoolaiming to utilize information systems, in particular, the SCADA information system to graduate technicalspecialists in dealing with new information systems. The school will be equipped with all required technicalcapabilities and labs. We will start with 50 studentsin Cairo and if the experience matches success wewill generalize it nationwide with affordable fees.

Q : How can we guarantee maintainingthe performance of new technologysystem efficiency after the project willbe handed over to you?A : We’ve contracted specialized companies tomaintain these systems through bids to select thebest company, we prefer that the supply companymaintains the system it has already installed. The company realizes capabilities of these systemsand how to deal with and maintain them. Theinterested company, which will be able to submit thelowest financial offer will win the bid. We maketechnical assessment for offers to select the bestquality standards, before going back to review thefinancial offer. This is the process we followed forchoosing the SCADA system.

Q : How can you update these systemscontinuously?A : The nature of these systems has no end, andwhat we brought from Giza Systems today will notbe the peak technology forever. We should have aqualified team to deal with these systems efficientlyand a budget to manage rationally. We also prepareanother budget to develop and update these systems,

without which we can’t bring these systems in thefirst place. If we hope to bring in any technical system,we keep continuity in mind. When putting a secondarybudget, we make sure that every company affiliatedwith us estimates their financials to pay to thesesystems.

Q : We would like to know the annualbudget of IT in the holding company?A : A few years ago, the value was zero. For now,I don’t have a specific value, but we have tasks andplans for updating and development. We are busycontinuing, regardless the required expenditures andcosts we already applied after adopting the SCADAsystems into the company. We don’t care about coststo bring or apply new technology into our companybecause the outcome will be so beneficial and justifythe amount of money we spend.

Q : What about the expected outcomebehind information technology system?A : The financial outcomes behind that are indirect. We are proud to have a high quality operation systemin the company and an instant control system for thecomponents and parts of the water line which enableus to make quick decisions and give excellent servicefor citizens and maintain our wide investments whichvalue by tens of billions of pounds.

Q : Do you think that these systems willbe intelligent in the future to dealspontaneously with crisis and urgentproblems without human interfere?A : This is the second phase of the development andupdating program in company. In the current phase,we’re focusing on control systems to all net parts, inthe next phase we will add control. For now we’llpostpone the high costs to turn the control systeminto intelligent system. One reason is that all watertaps now work manually, so if we hope to transfer toan automated system we need to automate thosewater taps, but that require billions of additional poundsto execute that. Currently, we apply the SCADA systemfor control according to our financial capabilities, andthe outcome behind that is known, but turning intocomprehensive automated system will increase cost.On the other hand it will reduce the number of workersin the company, but currently the costs of those workersis less than shifting to a comprehensive automatedsystem. We’re trying to apply what is suitable for usto apply and benefit from it. We undertake economicand technical studies before making any technologicaldecisions and we also have many experts andconsultants to help us take steps in the best directionfor our company and our customers.

Special thanks to Mr. Adel Al Lakanywho conducted this interview

The culture of employees should change as well asthey adopt the concept of " customer satisfaction"and do their best to provide the best service possible. After the authority turned into a company, now workingunder Decree No. 203, there is more flexibility foraffiliated companies to mange their own activitiesand cope with private sector standards, but it doesn’tmean we are going to privatize the sector raiseservice fees. The decree gave the company flexibilityto provide the best service and to make decisionsefficiently and instantly, as well as redefine thecompany's culture, enhancing training to deliver thequality service. Dr. Abdel Kawy explained that watercompanies have many difficulties in providing excellentservices to public including the affiliation of waterplants and their networks to municipalities, which arein desperate need of upgrading and development. Headded that this can’t be done without efficientmanagement that utilizes its own tools and technology.

As the water companies are looking to apply the upto date technology the first thing they thought aboutwas the “ SCADA system “ as an IT system thatcontrols varied processes within water networks ,beginning with water suction from the river to theplants and refining water then pumping it intodistribution network to reach citizens everywhere .The benefits of the controlling system are to makesure that these processes are carried out correctly. If that controlling system isn’t automated, it will beslow and manual.

In the past, we sent engineers and technicians toareas in order to assess how the system is performing, but this was time consuming and inefficient. Wereceive urgent calls on our hotline (125) to getcomplaints about any service inconvenience and wedeal with it instantly. Customer complaints enable usto go further with upgrading and development process.

Q : But why consider applying a newcontrol system “ SCADA “ as animportant step in upgrading system ofwater utility ?

A : Applying the “ SCADA system “is an importantstep in modernizing management and workingsystem for the whole company. Let me tell you a wellknown incident in Nasr City two months after thedecision to establish the holding company. The incidentcaused a full jam of water supply in many areas ofNasr City for 5 days. The cause of the problem wasa collapsed main supply pipe (1.5 meters in diameter)located in the heart of the desert. Near this location, workers were extracting high purity sand and didn’trealize they were sucking sand from a hole beneathwater supply line 35 meters deep. The water elevationlasted for 6 hours without workers realizing theproblem, despite the formation of a huge lake of waterin the desert. Fortunately the problem occurred atnight so it didn’t claim any lives. Even citizens didn’trealize that there was a problem in water suppliesuntil the next morning. This accident was a strongmotivation for us to upgrade management andcontrolling system To avoid these problems in future.“ SCADA “ is a highly developed system that controlsperformance instantly within all network components, starting from the elevation pump to the final consumerpoint. The system will monitor the network remotelyto show low pressure, problems instantly. If thesystem shows data reflecting any problem, workerscan move quickly to deal with the situation and solvethe urgent problem.

Q : What about the geographicalspan covered by “ SCADA “?A : In the first phase, it will cover greater Cairoincluding areas that evolved in the new division toHelwan governorate and 6th October, with plans togeneralize this system in all areas throughout Egypt.

Q : What about the role of the privatesector in supporting and executingupgrading plans for company?A : The private sector cooperates positively and playsan important role in executing and upgrading theprogram.Giza Systems implemented the SCADAsystem. The company that maintains Scada is also aprivate sector company. We depend on private sector

in many fields like replacement and updating, but wealso use some of the holding company's subsidiaries. If there aren’t enough workers for operating andmaintenance we deal with the private sector toexecute that under our supervision. We have 19affiliate companies of the holding company which isconsidered a supervisory company, with no productionactivities.

Q : What about varied steps for updatingthe holding company for water and waterwaste, and the outcome behind that?A : We generalize what we do for development incontrol systems all over the governorates; greater Cairowas the first step, and the next steps are to follow indifferent governorates. Most of the companies affiliatedwith the holding company began to execute thesesystems on the private sector to import the “ SCADAsystem” and it has had a big effect on governance andproviding excellent services in the companies in whichthe system will be installed and operate. Citizens ofthese areas will feel a considerable improvement inservice, instead of 6 hours to realize that there is aproblem with water pipe in Nasr City, the problemmay have been realized instantly with SCADA.

SCADA will help us gather all data and measurementsin control rooms, while wells and refineries areunderground. In the past, workers were operatingevery day with partial closure of the refinery if therewas a problem. Solving this problem would take longtime and big effort, but revising the mine remotelythrough SCADA and reading of measurements anddata, would enable the problem to be solved instantly. If there are any changes in reading, those responsiblefor the particular well will realize that there is aproblem. If we deal with that problem immediately,it will take short time, less effort, and less costs. Theproblem might be solved by clearing refinery fromsands without losing water, but if we don’t have asystem like SCADA we will lose a lot of water. Wecan say that SCADA will maintain the holdingcompany’s investments, worth 70 billion Egyptianpounds. We can estimate the loss by 30% , which

In the upcomingrestructure, for instance, we will have a VP ofHuman Cap i ta l Deve lopment . H i sresponsibilities will be focused on humancapital development, rather than HRmanagement. Based on this restructuring, wedo expect a complete change in this area ofour company in the near future.

One of the major strategic achievements ofour internal developments was the launch ofa new performance management program, the Balanced Scorecard (BSC), this programallowed us to better measure our performancebased on 4 essential criteria; Financial, InternalProcesses, Learning and Growth, and CustomerSatisfaction. If you have good people andefficient processes then you will definitelyhave satisfied customers, and in the end youwill have good financial results; this programensures that we are fulfilling this equation. The successive restructures together with theperformance management program allowedus to improve our bottom and top lines allowingus to quadruple our revenue over the past fouryears

Q: How did Human Resources contributeto Giza Systems strategic plans?A: Human resources are a critical element ofour company, as people are our only realresource. The HR department has been tryingto put in place a clear performancemanagement system, based on whichemployees would get appraised and have aneeds assessment for career developmentand succession planning. This system allowsthe company to establish where the gaps thatneed to be filled in the company are. So, HRwill play a crucial role in Giza Systems strategicplans and we are expecting HR to continueto stream line its processes and add value inthis area.

Q: Recently, Giza Systems hasexperienced an organizationalrestructure, what are the most importantchanges in this restructure?A: Actually, the most important change wasthe creation of a new layer of management, theVPs. We have created two new key positions, the VP of Human Capital Development and theVP of Marketing and Planning, this is the secondstep in the plan, and then we work on theconsolidation of the business departments, tomake them one department; Sales and Delivery.Under this department we will have the businessunits and regional entities and all of them willbe channeled into one head office in a certainarea. The consolidation of all our business intoone area is very important in helping us succeedin our endeavors to expand the company. Finally,we will create a Performance Managementposition, which will be responsible for thecoordination and management of the MIS andscore cards, as well as, all of our otherperformance metrics. So, basically, we havetried to remove any bottlenecks that wouldhinder the company ’s growth, and theserestructures should help the organization to grow.It is a critical gating factor for the organization. In fact, without this, the organization will notgrow; it will remain centralized and limited byits capacity and its capabilities. With this, wehave opened new bandwidth and made newpositions. This is key, in my opinion, for us to beable to capitalize on our growth in the area.

Q: How will this new restructure assistGiza Systems in implementing its vision?A: Our vision is to become the number oneintegrator in the region by 2009. In order to

achieve that, we have been expandingextensively in the region. Over the years, wehave made some mistakes and these mistakeshave slowed down the process of us reachingour full potential in this area, but we have takencorrective action to resolve this.

The consolidation of operation functions hasunder its umbrella the three business units, sonow there is one entity that is responsible forthe financial performance and results of theentire company. The creation of this strategicplanning entity will allow us not just to buildmore on consolidating plans with existingbusiness, but will also have the responsibility ofgenerating revenues from new lines of business. Now that we are well-structured we can fullyrealize our potential in new markets and newlines of business. Building a Human Capital andDevelopment position in the new structure isalso an important factor in our development andexpansion. The appointed person will beresponsible for constructing the training academy, which will create a consistency of resources, their availability and their quality, within thecompany, which should help relieve the currentproblems that HR are facing. The consolidationof MIS and business reporting under thePerformance Management Department shouldalso help MIS become a real engine for ourinternal improvement. Overall, I think thisrestructure is critical to us, as well as, holdingside benefits that not only serve the organization, but also our customers.

In future issues we will have Interviews with the newlyassigned VPs. So, stay tuned to find out more about theirroles in Giza Systems.

During the last few years,Mr. ElNawawi has implemented many strategicchanges in Giza Systems, allowing the companyto quadruple its revenue in over a very shortperiod of time. Q:How do you view Egypt'soverall technologicalperformance?A: Egypt has extremely strong potential tobe a leader in the Information Technologyindustry within the Middle Eastern region.Unfortunately, Egypt has yet to realize thispotential. However, we are taking the rightsteps towards the ranking our country oughtto have. The augmenting demand for IT andinfrastructure services, indicates the potentialfor growth in the Egyptian market, which isranked as the second market in the region, interms of size. Egypt faces a number ofchallenges that if overcome, might allow thecountry to lead the region.

Q:What makes Giza Systems sospecial?A: I would say a number of things: our GizaSystems people, definitely, make us very unique. The organization as a whole; is also unique, aswe have modeled our company on adistinguished and mature business model. Thisvertical business model allows us to better serveour customers, as well as, better understandtheir businesses. In the IT industry, having closelong-term relationships with customers and astrong understanding of their businesses is nolonger a luxury.

We have managed to build an extensive expertisein our vertical target market industries.By doing so, we are able to be proactive when

interacting with our customers, to ensure thehighest standards of customer satisfaction andbecause of our hard work our customers viewus as a partner rather than a vendor. So, for us,our business model is unique; the blend ofservices that we offer, between automation andIT services is unique in the Middle Eastern region.

Q: What are your near futureplans for Giza Systems?A: Our plans are all built around growth andexpansion in the region, the expertise that wehave developed in Egypt and the track recordthat we have built will be utilized to grow evenmore within the region. Our office in Saudi Arabiastarted its operations in 2005; and we havealready had very impressive success stories inthe Telecom and Utilities industries in the KSA.Our presence in Saudi Arabia has helped us inthe implementation of projects in more than 6countries in the region. Dubai is another importantarea; we will be opening up an office there inQ3 2008. The concentration on the Gulf region,in general, is a major crossroads for the company.Secondly, besides our forecasted organic growth,we have plans inside of Egypt for inorganicgrowth as well. We are focusing on selectiveacquisitions that will help us grow beyond ourcurrent capacity. We acquired one company lastJanuary, GTS, an oil and gas services company, acquiring 51% of the company. Now, we arelooking to acquire another company in a similarfield. The third plan is focused on Giza Systemsundertaking new activities such as panel building, which we started at the beginning of this year,as well as, GIS services and SAP services, whichwe will be implementing. We hope that all ofthese new activities will contribute to our growth.

Q: From your point of view what isthe most important element of asuccessful business?A: In my own humble opinion, there are twomain elements: having good people and havingefficient processes. One cannot exist without

the other, and if they did, it would not allow usto achieve the success. You have to have goodpeople; in terms of their capabilities to learn, tobe committed, to take their own initiative, to bemotivated, and trustworthy, because humanresources is the best asset a company can have. The second element is having efficient processesthat allow us to do things the right way and inan effective manner.

Q: In your opinion, what potentialdoes the IT industry have in the Gulf, and what are Giza Systems’ plansfor this market?A: The Gulf market is an incredibly attractiveand tough market and there is an augmentingdemand for IT and infrastructure services.A lot of projects are being developed and hugeinvestments are happening there, whether inthe education, or health sectors, or ininfrastructure industries, such as water andelectricity. The continuous increase in oil pricesand additional investments that are coming infrom petroleum companies also have a greatrole to play in the expansion of opportunities inthe IT industry. Finally, the fierce competition inthe telecom industry generates new needs formore advanced and reliable IT services, whichagain creates unlimited opportunities for the ITindustry.

The Saudi Arabian IT market size is forecastedto reach US $10 billion by 2010, which will makeit the biggest market in the region and becauseof this we are focusing most of our efforts onthis region. Our window of opportunity is inexpanding the IT resources that aid in the growthof these markets that can be offered. Thisopportunity is not only one that should be utilizedby us as a company, but primarily we must utilizeit as a country.
