Sometimes, this position can be tough. Then there are those whom reach out, and we can help,

with even the smallest efforts on our part, but greatly needed by others. When I get the phone

call with the bad news, I struggle. But then I’m afforded an opportunity to help the members or

family members, by offering up our wonderful chapter resources, which you have always come

through. I would like to thank you for your unwavering support to our chapter.

I would also like to extend my gratitude for all the support from all of our Chapter Officers, and

Support Staff. Without them, we would not have the active and fun filled chapter that we do. I tip

my hat to each of you with a grateful heart.

That all said, January was a very busy month. We started off on

the 1st, with our North/South Potluck

lunch with 32 members and guests in

attendance. A great time was had,

with great food, desserts and lot’s of

fun things. We even did something

new and entertaining. We auctioned

off the leftovers, which helped to cover the cost

of the chapter provided food.

Then we were planning our Chapter Gathering, only to have father winter to

dump 7.5 inches of snow on us, and pretty much brought the low country to

gridlock. So we had to delay our Gathering, and combined it with our Meet

to Eat, enjoying the back room at Sticky Fingers in Summerville, with 21

members and guests in attendance. The food was great, and a fun time had

by all. We even helped out a member in need, who blew out a tire on the

way there, and arranged for them to get mobile again so they didn’t have to

walk home in the rain.

We followed that up with 8 of us attending the SC District All

Members Forum. We sat through a seminar, that we didn’t realize was a seminar

until they put a slide up, about half way through. This is the new style of

presentations under the University Trainer program. We got caught up on some

of the news, upcoming events, and a good time with distant friends. A big

thanks to Buddy and Kim, and their team, for a fun filled event.

Then we had a great Team Meeting, where we continued plotting away at the

future events and rides for the chapter, with 10 members in attendance. I would remind you, this

meeting is not just for the team. We welcome attendance and inputs from all our members, and

we have received some great ideas this way. Thank you.

After that, Craig led a Mystery Ride off to parts around the Low Country, and ended up eating

lunch at Rodney Scott’s BBQ in downtown Charleston, with 8 riders enjoying some great food.

The weather was great, and the ride was a good January ride.

Then we were off to the next Meet to Eat, where we changed our plans and went to the local

American Legion Post and supported their Spaghetti Fund Raiser dinner. We had 12 members to

come out to support this effort, and we thank you for your support.

Then came the big event… the Chapter Oyster Roast, where we

had some great member support, roasting the oysters, cooking

the hamburgers and hot dogs, and again, some awesome

covered dishes and desserts.

This is always a fun time. And

with an attendance of over 33

people, we got to see some of

our friends from the past also,

and we hope they will come

back to support the chapter.

Our last event for the month of

January, we did something very different. We went to the Flower

Town Players performance of “She Kills Monsters”, a hilarious play

about a young women’s journey in learning about her sister after

her death, by playing dungeons and dragons. We had a great time,

with 10 of our members in attendance, where some of us went out to

eat afterwards, and found a new Meet to Eat possibility.

Now the sad news. I recently received a phone call from one of our members, who had just

learned they had cancer. The prognosis is not good, so they are trying to get their affairs in

order. To do that, they need to sell the GL 1800 they just bought used last year. It is a 2001

GL1800 with just over 100K miles. It is black, and they are asking $6,800. This bike was

previously owned by another one of our members, who kept immaculate records and

maintenance on the bike. Anyone interested can contact Mike Melton, at 843-847-1444, and we

can make arrangements for the contact.

And, as I write this, there is good news and bad news. Bad news is, Craig Miller is in the

Summerville hospital. The good news is he has been moved out of the emergency room, out of

the Intensive Care Unit, and now in a normal room. We expect he will remain there for a few

more days as they run tests and try to get him better. Keep Craig in your prayers.

For those who remember Dan Pittman, he is doing well in his new home up in Hopkinton, MA.

His son-in-law and family look out for him up there. We miss you Dan.

Until next time, ride safe, ride often, and be thankful,

Mike Melton

Assistant Chapter Directors 2017 Chapter Couple of the Year

Another Year has passed As your outgoing Couple of the Year, 2017 has been a great year and a lot of fun for us. By

now, most of you know that our goal was to change things up a little and break the mold of

repeating the same things year after year. We tried our best to start a few new things with the

Chapter, including “giving back” to our community.

We began in June with a breakfast meeting at Sunrise Bistro, followed by a Mystery

Scavenger Hunt Ride with an “Amazing Race” twist of solving and following clues around the

greater Summerville area and ending with lunch and prizes in a local park. This was, of course,

a Fundraising event to benefit One80 Place, a homeless shelter for Veterans in Charleston, in

memory of Roger Burriss. We followed that up with a second Fundraiser Mystery Ride in

October starting from Logan’s in Summerville with questionnaires to fill out at stops along the

route, ending with more prizes and an ice cream social in a Eutawville park. Later in October, a

group of us delivered a $400 check to a grateful One80 Place to help in supporting their efforts

with our Veterans, down on their luck, and giving them the tools needed to improve their lives.

As a change up for our annual Christmas Party in December, rather than exchanging gifts, our

Chapter collected over 80 unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots and presented our gifts and a check

to representatives of the Marines and Navy, valued at over $1,000. Great Job!!!

At the same event, we played a Trivia game and gave away prizes, and had some fun with a

short round of Pictionary.

At our Annual North/South Dinner on New Years Day, we auctioned off the leftover food and

collected another $50 to go into our Treasury. You’ll hear more on that subject in our

Treasurer’s first newsletter article on the following page.

As we start 2018, we hope to continue to come up with new fun ways to make our Gatherings

more exciting and inviting in an effort to increase member participation. In addition, we are

making some changes to our Newsletter, also trying to make it more interesting and still

relevant. As always, we welcome your comments, new ideas and articles.

We sincerely hope that our efforts are taking hold and that

more members will come up with suggestions for more rides,

maybe even plan and/or lead a ride to one of your favorite

places, and new ideas to have fun at our Chapter Gatherings

and other events.

Thanks for all your support in 2017.

Let’s make 2018 even better!

Important information for all members:

The Chapter Treasury is quite low due to recent

operating expenditures. Just a reminder… All GWRRA

membership dues go to the National Organization and

NOT one cent comes back to the Chapters.

In order to ensure we have the funds necessary to take

care of the chapter throughout the year ahead, we are

implementing a few new things:

1. We are starting a ride donation of $1.00 per person for each Chapter Ride

(other GW Chapters have found this a painless way to keep their treasury

healthy).

2. We are planning a Progressive Dinner/Ride in the Spring and will charge $5.00

per person to participate. This will be a Mystery Ride to three members homes,

each serving a separate course. All funds collected will go to the Chapter

Treasury, NOT to the participating hosts. This promises to be a fun event and we

hope to see you all there.

All members are encouraged to participate in the 50-25-25 drawing as that is

our primary source of funds. Remember, we the chapter, are responsible for our

own financial health.

Have you got an idea… please be sure to share it.

Thank You for your help!

Anita

Rider Education Safety Corner has changed to Ride Coordinator. Craig will continue

submitting articles and we will see articles from District Rider Educator Rich Kitco as well.

What Happened Last Month page is gone. Everyone receives g-mails from Mike in advance of

those events and anyone interested in (or able to) taking part in would have already.

What’s Happening This Month and Beyond page will continue to focus on upcoming Chapter

events. We will include District news and a few local events that may be of interest for short

notice rides. What’s Going On In The Area may be incorporated in this page as well.

The Special Days of (the month) are gone. Seemed to be a lack of interest, but could return if

we get renewed interest.

Calendars reduced from three months to two.

New Trivia Rules for 2018…

You have 24 hours to submit the correct answer.

Winner will be drawn from all the correct answers received.

As before, you cannot win two months in a row, everyone has a chance.

Five free tickets will be awarded at the next Chapter Gathering you attend.

Hidden Member Numbers gone due to lack of participation.

For Sale pages will continue. Please let us know if you want your ads to run again each month

and if your articles have been sold. If we don’t hear from you, we will assume they have

been sold. Thanks for your help with this.

We sincerely hope you enjoy reading the revised newsletter. Our goal is to make it more

appealing and remain informative. Any suggestions for additional changes, new features, etc.,

are welcomed.

Levels Are your Levels up to date? Do you need a Co-Rider Course, CPR/FA, ARC, TRC to be

current? Do you even know the status of your Levels?

Last month’s newsletter article was dedicated to checking your own levels status. You can

access your info from the GWRRA website under Rider Ed at “My R.E. Information”.

Your District Team is working on providing as many training opportunities as we can work in.

Keep an eye on the District Bulletin where everything in the District is listed.

We are working on Chapter Levels Reports and getting them to the Chapter Directors so they

will know the Levels health of the Chapter.

Why the emphasis on Levels you may ask. The GWRRA Levels program was instated to keep

the Members safe on the road in an inherently dangerous sport. Think about it, it is pretty

dangerous on the highway with all the distracted drivers as well as the volume of traffic now

days. Some riders scoff at the Levels because it advocates ATGATT but if you have ever

experienced the dreaded Motorcycle Road Rash you will know why the gear is required. It is

just good common sense!

So let’s make South Carolina safe.

Chapter Ride Coordinator

Well, the first planned ride for the Chapter was

Saturday, January 20th. We had 4 bikes and 7

people. It was a great day ride through Moncks

Corner up to Jamestown, then to Mount Pleasant

and ended up at Rodney Scotts BBQ in downtown

Charleston. It was a great day for a ride. The food

was great and the day could not have been better.

If you have a destination in mind let me know and

I will try to work it in. We are trying to plan some

fun rides to get the chapter more active and we

can’t do that without support from everyone. I will

also try to have some rides during the week for those

who can ride, although it might be without much notice.

It’s winter, but we are lucky enough here in SC to have awesome riding weather, even in February.

But the weather can change quickly, and the temperatures drop quickly. Always carry extra gear so

you can layer up if those temps fall. Be on the lookout for black ice. If it looks wet, it may be ice. We

want to have FUN riding. Be careful out there, and prepared for the elements.

Note: If you are new to Chapter ‘G’, or if we've missed your birthday or anniversary, please send an email to Mike Melton at [email protected]. Include your name, birthday (no year needed) and anniversary (also no year needed).
