As a new year of academics and athletics come into focus at Clemson University, it is hard not to think of when we were freshmen moving into our first “home away from home” at our beloved Clemson. This fall welcomed the third generation of SC Gamma undergraduates residing in the Phi Lodge, over 20 have moved into our on campus location on the Quad, and in two short months over 80 alumni will be returning from all over to participate in the 14th Annual Alumni Golf Tournament. It is truly an exciting time to be a Phi.

When future pledge brothers, Andy Stevenson ’82 (‘265’) and Andy White ’82 (‘259’) came to Clemson University in the fall of 1978, both of them wondered what joining a fraternity would end up being for them. “When I enrolled, the thought of joining a fraternity had never entered my mind,” said Stevenson, “I’m not sure I really understood what a fraternity was or the advantages of joining one. Harriett Ford was a student at Clemson and attended my high school and she introduced me to her boyfriend, Steve Grumman ’79 (‘224’). Steve and his roommate Pat Rushton ’79 (‘200’) were Clem-son Phi’s and rushed me during the fall semester. That’s how I selected Phi Delta Theta.” Echoing, that same path, White mentioned fellow Camden hometown brothers, Jeff Fisher ’79 (‘212’) and Bobby Makla ’78 (‘241’) as being instrumental in him joining the South Carolina Gamma Chapter.

REMINISCING ON COLLEGIATE FOOTBALL TAILGATE MEMORIESAfter initiation, Brother White and Stevenson went on to hold undergraduate officer positions, alumni secretary for White and both served as social chairmen. Recounting an old memory, Brother Stevenson remembers one of his first Clemson football weekends. “At the time, one of the responsibilities of the social chairman was to post a list during football season for the brothers to sign up for their choice of “spirits” needed for the football weekend. On Friday afternoon we would take the list and go to the local liquor store to make the purchase using a fraternity check and the brothers paid for the liquor when picking up the

whiskey. Andy White and I were both a couple of months shy of our 21st birthday, so typically an older brother picked up the order, but it was Homecoming and nobody was available. Andy White told me not to worry about it because he had developed a relationship with the owner. After loading a couple of cases of the hooch into the trunk and getting on the road, I noticed an unmarked Ford LTD pull in behind us, again Andy White said don’t worry about it. When the driver put the blue light on his roof and cut it on I started to worry. Andy said he would do the talking….shortly after we ended up in jail. We were put in separate room and each presented the list that was found in the car with all of the names. We were asked who on the list was underage, but remarkably, nobody on the list was underage,” said Steven-son with a laugh, “But that’s my story and I am sticking to it!”

CLEMSON PHIS JOIN FORCESUpon graduation from Clemson, Brother White went on to start a career in the real estate industry, selling condominiums on Fripp and Harbor Islands off the coast of Beaufort. Brother Stevenson entered the Air Force after graduation, eventually transitioning into the banking industry. Now, both are part owners in a successful ready mix concrete producer company, based in the midlands of South Carolina, along with Tom Hanzlik ’78 (‘254’) and Jody Hunter ’78 (‘207’) also serving as partners. Brother Stevenson serves as the president of the company today.

INSPIRED TO SERVE THE SOUTH CAROLINA GAMMA FOUNDATIONBoth Brother White and Stevenson

have volunteered their time to help Clemson Phi undergraduates, serving on the South Carolina Gamma Foun-dation and positioning the Foundation for the success it has had today, from acquiring the SCG Phi Lodge and being able to provide housing to current undergraduates. “Brothers like Arby Dickert ’78 (‘195’), Paul Kelker ’78 (‘218’), Clark Allen ’79 (‘204’), and Jody are individuals that I looked up to then and still do today. Steve Colson ’78 (‘184’), Ron “Ears” Winburn ’77 (‘176’), Charlie Barron ’76 (‘141’), and Alan Orton ’77 (‘178’) are some that I also enjoyed getting to know and still see from time to time,” White said. “We both worked with Dave Sojourner ’83 (‘285’), Davis Ely ’82 (‘261’), Brother Hanzlik, and a couple of other brothers to take over the South Carolina Gamma Founda-tion. In this past, it had become a slush fund for whatever current needs the chapter had, and had not grown in several years. I think we did a credible job of getting the corporation on track and ready to be handed off to the

group that ultimately got the off-campus house in place. My hat’s off to the current group Tom Hash ’69 (‘640’), Jim Douglas ’70 (‘11’), Beau Shuler ’69 (‘147’, SC Beta), Allen Edwards ’70 (‘2’), Biff Sowell ’73 (‘65’), and David Tibbs ’70 (‘1’), among others for sticking with the undergraduate chapter and seeing the project through.”

UNDERGRADUATE SOUTH CAROLINA GAMMA EXPERI-ENCE IMPACTFUL TODAYLooking back on their South Carolina Gamma experience, Brother White sees the impact the fraternity has had on his life. “My time at the Phi Delt house helped me understand how to get along with different personality types and people from different backgrounds. That experience has served me well over the last three decades,” he said. “I have hired over 50

recent graduates in the last 15 years, many from Clemson and even a few fraternity brothers. I think many young men get to college without a clear vision of their own future, and I was the same way. I recommend that young men spend at least some time every week thinking about what they want to do with their lives. That exercise will provide focus and a sense of purpose that are not naturally present in 18-22 year-olds. Brother Stevenson shared the same feelings, saying “South Carolina Gamma’s impact on my career was truly life-changing. I learned that friendships are earned and that loyalty to our bonds of friendship are what is really important in life.”

In his free time, Brother Stevenson enjoys thinking of himself as a farmer who just happens to have another job, spending time on his farm in Allendale with his wife, Lauri, and three sons,

two graduating from Clemson. “It’s been a great opportunity to spend a lot of time with my children and expose them, in some way, to the kind of childhood I enjoyed. I spend my spare time hunting birds or getting ready to hunt birds.” Brother Stevenson also serves as the State Chairman for SC Ducks Unlimited and the Boy Scouts of America.” Brother White and his wife, Debbie, also a Clemson graduate, enjoy travelling and spending time at their beach house at Edisto with several Clemson Phis and their wives during football season. The couple has three sons, all Clemson graduates.

You can contact Brother Stevenson and Brother White at [email protected] and [email protected], respectively.

Greetings fellow brothers, and on behalf of the actives at Clemson University I thank you for your time and guidance over the past semester, in ensuring that South Carolina Gamma remains the top tier fraternity at Clemson. This summer, we were presented with the Silver Star Chapter Award at GHQ Convention in Las Vegas, initiated seven new members, and continued our academic success, sending Chapter morale to an all-time high and laying a successful foundation for years to come.

PARTNERS WITH CLEMSON FOOTBALL TEAM ON PHILANTHROPYContinuing South Carolina Gamma’s traditional of being consistently involved on campus, the Chapter participated in multiple Greek Life and Clemson University philanthropies, one in particular being our annual partnership with the Clemson University Football team with their Recruitment Wrap

Up, benefitting needs-based scholarships for Clemson football players. In addition to our philanthropic endeavors, the spring was a positive turning point for the executive board, with all officers placing an emphasis on ensuring greater accountability among our fellow brothers and each member looking forward to continue striving toward Chapter and individual excellence

FALL RECRUITMENT AROUND THE CORNER, CHAPTER NEEDS YOUR HELPThe Chapter has already taken a proactive approach in ensuring that South Carolina Gamma recruits the best and the brightest new members coming into Clemson University, holding multiple new member interest events and regional dinners, forming an ongoing list to recruit potential new members from. We also look to you, our alumni, to contact myself, or Recruitment Chairman, Matthew Sullivan ’15 (‘842’) with

any recommendations you may have.

We look forward to informing you of all our future progress and couldn’t have had this success without your support.

Robert Smith ’89 (‘391’) set his feet on the Clemson University

campus in the fall of 1985, eager to start his undergraduate experience. “Clemson was a special place for me. I was able to meet Jeff Mackin ’89 (‘399’) before school started at orientation, but little at the time, did I know that would be the beginning of a lifelong friendship,” he said. Living in Johnstone his freshman year, Rob pledged South Carolina Gamma in the spring of 1986 with good friend, Ron Maday ’89 (‘392’) after fellow SC Gamma hall mates,

Jeff, Mark Madlinger ’89 (‘389’), and Sean McDermott ’89 (‘388’) were initiated the previous semester to the fraternity.

After initiation, Rob served as social chairman and chorister for the Chapter. “Once I was a part of the fraternity, the real-life experience that I gained from being part of an organization truly served as my introduction to how a successful business operates. I learned many valuable lessons from my under-graduate time in South Carolina Gamma and for me; it was a rite of passage from high school into the real-world.”

Some of his favorite memories as an undergraduate include the HOE Olympics and the “6 Man Chal-lenge”, that were both a favorite among the brotherhood at the time. “I specifically remember Jack Samuels ’89 (‘373’) standing up at the end of one of the 6 Man Challenge, proclaiming that ‘We are all winners!’ I will always remember that.” Rob also went on to thank and praise Jody Hunter ’79 (‘207') for the graduate leadership he provided to the actives during his time as chapter adviser saying, “He was very good to us, inviting us to his tailgate for home cooking and really being there when we needed a voice. His impact on the goodwill of the Chapter was undeni-able.”

Now, Rob serves as President of Jet Aviation, a market leader in business aviation services. Jet provides the full spectrum of services for the business aviation industry including VIP Completions, Maintenance, Fixed Base Operations (FBOs), Aircraft Management and Charter, and Staffing. Rob has worked with the parent company, General Dynamics for 25 years, living in Connecticut and San Diego along the way, and still reminisces on his fraternity experience as the building blocks for where he is today. “I learned in the

ROBERT SMITH ’89 (‘391’) SHARES SOUTH CAROLINA GAMMA PRIDE

Chapter that leadership is everything. In my time back at Clemson, for the alumni golf tournament, I was proud to see the actives carrying on the traditions and the SCG Foundation providing strong leadership. The group was extremely welcoming to the alumni that were there and I encourage all South Carolina Gamma alumni to come back to the tourna-ment and see each other. It’s a pretty pain free way to reconnect with old friends,” he said with a chuckle.

Rob currently resides in Basel, Switzerland with his wife, Robyn, a University of Pittsburgh graduate, and his two daughters, Danielle, 8, and Amber, 7. In his spare time, he is an avid traveler and enjoys taking his family to explore new cultures all over Europe. The family also still proudly cheers on the Tigers, watch-ing all Clemson sports from the other side of the world whenever they can.
