With roots in the Los Angeles country and folk-rock scenes, Linda Ronstadt became one of the most popularinterpretive singers of the '70s, earning a string of platinum-selling albums and Top 40 singles. Throughout the '70s,her laid-back pop never lost sight of her folky roots, yet as she moved into the '80s, she began to change her soundwith the times, adding new wave influences. After a brief flirtation with pre-rock pop,Ronstadtsettled into a pattern of

adult contemporary pop and Latin albums, sustaining her popularity in both fields.

While Ronstadt was a student at Arizona State University, she met guitarist Bob Kimmel. The duo moved to LosAngeles, where guitarist/song writer Kenny Edwards joined the pair. Calling themselves the Stone Poneys, the groupbecame a leading attraction on California's folk circuit, recording their first album in 1967. The band's second album,Evergreen, Vol. 2, featured the Top 20 hit "Different Drum," which was written by Michael Nesmith. After recording onemore album with the group, Ronstadt left for a solo career at the end of 1968.

Ronstadt's first two solo albums --Hand Sown Home Grown(1969) and Silk Purse (1970) -- accentuated her countryroots, featuring several honky tonk numbers. Released in 1971, her self-titled third album was a pivotal record in hercareer. Featuring a group of session musicians who would later form the Eagles, the album was a softer, morelaid-back variation of the country-rock she had been recording. With the inclusion of songs from singer/songwriters likeJackson Browne, Neil Young, and Eric Anderson, Linda Ronstadt had folk-rock connections as well. Don't Cry Now,released in 1973, followed the same formula to greater success, yet it was 1974's Heart Like a Wheel that perfectedthe sound, making Ronstadt a star. Featuring the hit covers "You're No Good," "When Will I Be Loved," and "It Doesn'tMatter Anymore,"Heart Like a Wheel" reached number one and sold over two million copies.

Released in the fall of 1975, Prisoner in Disguise followed the same pattern as Heart Like a Wheel and was nearly assuccessful. Hasten Down the Wind, released in 1976, suggested a holding pattern, even if it charted higher thanPrisoner in Disguise. Simple Dreams(1977) expanded the formula by adding a more rock-oriented supporting band,which breathed life into the Rolling Stones' "Tumbling Dice" and Warren Zevon's "Poor Poor Pitiful Me." The recordbecame the singer's biggest hit, staying on the top of the charts for five weeks and selling over three million copies.With Living in the U.S.A.(1978),Ronstadt began experimenting with new wave, recording Elvis Costello's "Alison"; thealbum was another number one hit. On 1980's Mad Love, she made a full-fledged new wave record, recording threeCostello songs and adopting a synth-laden sound. While the album was a commercial success, it signalled that herpatented formula was beginning to run out of steam. That suspicion was confirmed with 1982's Get Closer, her firstalbum since Heart Like a Wheel to fail to go platinum.

Sensing it was time to change direction, Ronstadt starred in the Broadway production of Gilbert & Sullivan's Pirates ofPenzance, as well as the accompanying movie. Pirates of Penzance led the singer to a collaboration with NelsonRiddle, who arranged and conducted her 1983 collection of pop standards What's New. While it received lukewarmreviews, it was a considerable hit, reaching number three on the charts and selling over two million copies. Ronstadt'snext two albums --Lush Life(1984) and For Sentimental Reasons (1986) -- were also albums of pre-rock standardsrecorded with Riddle.

At the end of 1986, Ronstadt returned to contemporary pop, recording "Somewhere Out There," the theme to theanimated An American Tail, with James Ingram; the single became a number two hit. She also returned to her countryroots in 1987, recording the Trio album with Dolly Part

After the successes of three platinum selling albums, 'I Should Coco' in 1995, 'In It For The Money' in 1997, and'Supergrass' (aka 'The X-ray Album') in 1999, Supergrass have recently released their fourth album 'Life On OtherPlanets'. This talented group of musicians formed Supergrass in 1994 after failing in the job market as factory worker(Gaz Coombes), plunger-dishwasher (Mick Quinn), dinner lady (Danny Goffey) and astrophysicist (Robert Coombes).They are a band who make joyous, moving, vivid vignettes to the madness of human existence, whose's string ofsuccesses include, 'Caught by the Fuzz', 'Alright', 'Richard III', 'Sun Hits the Sky', 'Going Out', 'Pumping on YourStereo' and 'Moving'. Eight years of touring has established Supergrass as one of the most highly regarded andaccomplished live bands in the country. The band took a break after touring the X-ray album, but in January 2002,armed with wine, cigarettes and acoustic guitars, they barricaded themselves into a villa in the South of France for"two months of getting pissed on red wine and scoffing French food". Here began a musical odyssey that would laterbecome 'Life on Other Planets' (L.O.O.P.). "We had a laugh playing guitars, writing songs, and generally hanging out.We 'lived it large' and kept it real'. Being together in France felt just like the old days, when we all lived together on theCowley Road (Oxford)". The relaxed atmosphere pulled the band together and gave them an element of focus. It putthem in a positive state of mind and created the vibe and energy that would set the tone for the album. Supergrassreturned home with minidiscs full of ideas and, over the next couple of months, hung out at each others houses givingstructure to the music, and turning ideas into songs. The album came together when they got into the studio with TonyHoffer, "this cool Californian dude" who is best known for his work with Air and Beck. Says Mick, "It is the first time wehave used a producer since 'I Should Coco'. Tony has tickled the album's scrotum with his cheeky west coasttouches". The bulk of the album was recorded at Helioscentric Studio in Sussex and at Rockfield Studios, nearMonmouth in Wales. The songs on 'Life On Other Planets' are upbeat, uplifting and full of energy. Already released ona limited 7" is 'Never Done Nothing Like That Before' which is, says Danny, "a really hard XTC punk song about beingyoung and ill and doing time for the PTA". Another track, 'Prophet 15' is named after the late 70's synthesiser which setthe astral mood for much of the album. Says Gaz,"Prophet 15 is an odd dream sequence; you're not sure if you'redead or just dreaming that you're dead". Other songs like 'Seen The Light' and 'Can't Get Up' and the new single'Grace' have that signature Supergrass catchiness that will make you want to sing your guts out. Supergrass are aband with a singular identity and a universal spirit. It's the band's obscure take on life, it's darkness, joy and humourthat make Supergrass so unique.
