READING

1 Read the article and tick (✓) A, B, or C.

For centuries, sleep was a complete mystery. In the last fewyears, however, scientists have been able to use new technologyto investigate electrical and muscular states of the body duringsleep. These investigations have shed new light on the sixrecurring stages of sleep, which were first described in the early20th century. It is fair to say that we now have a much betterunderstanding of what actually happens to us when we aresleeping, though it is far from a totally clear picture.

The first stage of sleeping is called, somewhat confusingly,‘waking’. By this, sleep scientists mean a short period ofwakefulness, just a matter of minutes, when the body is relaxedand prepares for sleep. Tense muscles relax, eye movementslows down, and the body slips gently towards drowsiness.

Once feeling drowsy, the sleeper has moved into a periodknown to the scientists as ‘stage 1 sleep’, a period which lastsno more than ten minutes. A way of describing this stage is tosay that the sleeper is on the very edge of sleep, with their eyesclosed and their bodies still. However, it wouldn’t be difficult torouse a person at this stage. And once awake, a person may feelas if he or she has not slept.

By stage 2, the sleeper has entered a period of light sleep, perhaps best explained as a time when the muscles of the bodyhover between being completely relaxed and being responsive. Then, as the heart rate quickly slows down, and the bodytemperature drops, the body prepares to enter a much deeperphase of sleep. The third and fourth stage of sleep are when thebody is completely asleep, its muscles paralysed, its breathingregular.

What happens next is quite unexpected. From the deep sleepof stage 4, the body works backwards through stage 3 sleep tothe light sleep of stage 2, but then, instead of waking, it entersthe bizarre and magical stage of REM sleep. The body has beenasleep for about an hour and a half before reaching this stage.

REM stands for ‘rapid eye movement’. The heart rate speedsup, breathing becomes erratic, and the brain becomes veryactive. The sleeper is dreaming, something that only happensduring the REM stage. Fortunately, however, while the brain isin overdrive, the rest of the body’s muscles are paralysed.

The initial REM stage is over after ten minutes or so. Then, thebody starts its sleep cycle all over again, with the next REMstage taking a bit longer. In a typical night’s sleep, there will befive different sleep cycles with the final REM stage lasting as longas an hour.

Naturally, there are many factors which influence our sleepcycle, not least age. Small children get more deep sleep thananybody else, and, as a general rule, the older we get theshorter the time we spend in deep sleep. But, while stage 3 andstage 4 of the sleep cycle shorten with age, the first REM stagelengthens.

So, there you have it. Next time you go to bed and lay yourhead on the pillow, just imagine what adventures your sleepingself is about to set off on.

Example: For hundreds of years, people had no idea whathappened when we slept.

PROGRESS TEST F I LES 4–7

Lis tening 1Simon Have you heard of Jack the Ripper, Sally?Sally Of course I have, Simon. Why?Simon Well, it’s just that I’ve been reading about him. Sally And?Simon Well, it’s a fascinating story. I bet you know nothing about

it.Sally He killed a couple of women in south London in 1870 or

1880 or whatever. OK?Simon Well, good guess. Actually, he murdered at least five

women in the East End of London in the late 1880s, andhe may have murdered many more. The guy who wrotethe book I’ve read reckons he could’ve killed as many asten. I suppose we’ll never know for sure.

Sally It sounds gruesome to me. And I’ve heard it all before. Tobe honest, I don’t understand the fascination withhorrible criminals from the past. I quite like history, butI’d rather read about somebody who actually didsomething useful rather than a psychopath.

Simon OK, but the bad guys are much more fun than boring olddo-gooders. The book though isn’t just about themurders. Otherwise, I’d find it boring. I like readingsocial history and this one’s about the social situation inVictorian London at the time. It wasn’t that Jack theRipper was the worst murderer in history. He was just thefirst one to get loads of publicity and public attention, especially in the newspapers. Each time there was amurder, the newspapers would wonder whether Jack theRipper had murdered again. And it didn’t matter if it washim or not. Everybody was afraid of him, just like they aretoday when there is a murderer on the loose. It was thebeginning of the media age. Before Jack, nobody reallyknew what was going on. The fact that they never caughthim just made the story more of a legend.

Sally Oh, he was never caught, was he? I thought he was thePrince of Wales, Queen Victoria’s idiot son.

Simon Well, that was one theory. Actually, the author of thisbook says it couldn’t have been him. There was a schoolteacher called Druitt who may have run away to Australia, and an American doctor who also disappeared quitesuddenly. The teacher is the book’s author’s favouritesuspect. He explains in detail why the doctor couldn’tpossibly have been in London at the time. But, let’s face it,there isn’t any really convincing evidence. We’ll just neverknow for sure who did it.

1Daisy I heard you were delayed for six hours at the airport,

Chris. It must’ve been awful.Chris No kidding. Try entertaining three little kids at an

airport with two coffee shops. Fortunately, they slept abit so we didn’t get all that moaning you get whenthey’re exhausted, but it was really boring for them. Andfor me. Not only that, but there were noannouncements, so I was a bit scared we might miss theflight.

2George I can’t find my keys anywhere.Molly I wish you’d listened to me and put them on the kitchen

table when you got out of the car last night. George Well, I didn’t, did I? Molly OK. Have you looked in your coat? You might’ve left

them there. George Hang on. I’ll have a look. I reckon you’re right. Yeah.

Here they are. It’s because I never wear this leather jacket– I must’ve slipped them in the pocket as I was getting outof the car.

3Jamie My CD player doesn’t seem to work. I can’t think what’s

wrong with it.Sue Are you sure it’s turned on?Jamie Very funny. It worked fine before, but it just clicks off

every time I press play.Sue Perhaps you need to put a different CD in. That one

might be faulty.Jamie OK. Hang on. That could well be it. No, wait … er … I

think I’ve been pressing the pause button not play. Oh,stupid or what?

4Jenny How was your holiday in Bangkok, Dave?Dave Wow! What a place! It’s got so much life and energy! Of

course, it’s really humid which made thingsuncomfortable, and the pollution is pretty bad, but Iloved it. I had thought I’d see more signs of poverty –beggars, homeless people, that kind of thing, insteadthere were lots of skyscrapers and people were drivinglarge cars.

5Ron I wish I’d gone to the concert last night, don’t you, Claire?

I’d have loved to have seen David Old.Claire Really? I’ve gone off him. I haven’t thought much of him

ever since his third CD. His new songs are terrible. Andhe doesn’t play any of his early stuff any more. I wish he’dplay more of the rock music that he used to.
