Then I thought of the wal, but a the t up on account of the eavor. Thet I emead the eosetdoors-there was no water thle and then I thought of the dumb waeit-i•r! anov- elty of the idea made me smile ; I ts two of the movable ahlves stood the pitebeon the bottom of the dumb waiter, got in myl•et wito th tamp; let myself down until I spposed was within a foot of the floor below, adthane ecame dmbw e o suddenly, that I wau shot ant of ath ipar t as iat ci h e dbes eatin- l t. Thea I tried the kitchen door, it wa locked ; I tried to force it open; it was made of two inch stuff, and held its own. Then I hoisted the window, and there were the rigid iron bare. If I ever felt angry at anybody, it was at myself for putting up those bare t please Mrs. Sparrowgrae. put them up, not to keep people in but to keep e laed m y m b e the ta sold barlers and l aked st , not a ltar was visi- ble; it was as blaekt Ink overhead. Then I thought of Baron Trenok and the priener of Chillon. Then Imade a'noise! Ishonted until I Was hoarse, end ruined our preservitng kettle with the poker. That brought our dogr out in fall bark, and between us we made night hid- eous. Then I thought I heard a voice, and lis- tened-oIt was Mle. 8parrowgra se aling me a from the top of the staircase. I tried to make her hear me, but then $W' dsnited with howl, growl nd -bark, so as toleown my voice, which is naturally paistive and tender. -Besides, there wert two bQte doors and double deaf- ened floors betweenusnet bnwb dula she recognize my voice even ifee did hear it? Mrs. Spar- rowgraes called ones'or twice, and then got frightened; the next thing I heard was a sound as if the roof had fallen mn, by which I under- stood that Mrs. Sparrowgrasewas g the rattle. That called.oor•eighbor, altr wide awake. He came to the rescue with a bull ter- * rier, a Newfoundland pup, a lantern and a re- volver. The moment he naw me he shot at me, but fortunately just missed me. I threw my- self under the kitchen table and began to expos- tulate with him but he would not listen to rea- soait the -excitement I. had forgotten his nsal)tl that made matters worse. It was no I'til he had roused up everybody around, broken in the basement door with an axe, got- ten into the kitchen with his savage dogs and shooting iron, and seized me by the collar, that he recognized me--and then wanted me to ex- plain it! But what kind of an explanation could I make to him ? I told him he would have to wait until my minduwas ompaede',and then I would let him uTiderstand the whole matter fully But he never wtald have had the par- ticulars frosnme. for I do not approve of neigh- bore that shoot at you, break in your door, and treat you in your own house as if you were a jail-bird.
