Small TalkHighlights of Roy Moore’s speech:

Rhonda has done a great job. She came back to the Board when needed. Karen, Barbara and Rhonda returned to help on the Board about 5 years ago. Karen has been in every Board position there is. Karen Barone, Barbara Thornton-Hill, and Marie Bird combined have 80 years total in NAME. They have about 33 or 34 years combined on the Board.

Who knew one year ago, what would be happening in the world (meaning COVID-19). NAME Board members stepped up and helped us get all those wonderful online classes, during the time when National would usually be happening. It was a learning curve, but we adapted. NAME is continuing on, in spite of everything.

Roy loves a woman who loves miniatures. He feels very privileged to help and assist NAME.Highlights of Rhonda’s closing speech:The upcoming Houseparties and Nationals are now scheduled as—

In Memory of JoAnn JacotThe Carson City Mini Makers lost a beloved friend with the passing of JoAnn Jacot on June 7th at age 75. She is remembered as a woman of great faith, a Life

Member of NAME, a big teddy bear collector (she visited many a doll and teddy bear show), and for the wonderful minis she made.

JoAnn and her daughter, Vicki Pillers, started out in miniatures together. When Vicki was about 10 years old, they found the local miniatures shop that was then in Reno, and bought a Victorian dollhouse kit (at Christmas time). Vicki and JoAnn spent the holidays put-ting the house together. They then got involved with a “kit of the month” for miniature furni-ture. They both joined NAME in 1983. They

also started going to mini workshops, and attended several NAME Houseparties and Nationals. When Vicki went off to college she stopped making miniatures.

JoAnn’s time with miniatures was just beginning. JoAnn and Vicki had started with one-inch scale dollhouses. JoAnn eventually sized down to quarter scale. JoAnn was wonderful at quarter scale, taking her swaps to mini events, or mail-ing them. It became her favorite scale. She did dabble in micro scale, too. JoAnn attended the local Folsom Fiestas and Summer at Tahoes for a few years, until she dedicated herself fully to the smaller scales. She attended multiple House-parties and Nationals. JoAnn was a participant and a volunteer for many years with Quarter Connection; hosting weekly chats and providing puzzles for the membership. The last Sacramento NAME Day she attended was on October 5th, 2019.

NAME DAY ON Mini Cyber Club (MCC), PLEASE JOIN USSaturday, October 3 and Saturday October 24 for 1/4 Scalers (see info below)

With the unfortunate damper on all things in person these days, NAME Day events are not able to happen in many or most areas. So Mini Cyber Club (an official NAME club) is planning an all-day event on ZOOM so that we can at least meet face to face online which seems to be our new way of gathering to share our love of all things miniature. We invite all NAME members to join us, whether you are a member of Mini Cyber Club or not. If you register, you will receive the login information and any other informa-tion available to registrants. See the schedule below. There is no cost, we will tempt you with food thoughts, recipes and talk but you are on your own to actually provide those food items that will help you sustain yourself through the day. Chocolate is highly recommended for firm, attention-enhancing, steady hands for all miniature creativity. On Saturday, October 3rd, Official NAME Day this year, we will start off with a session of: demos, tips and tricks and question answering for the 1:12 and 1:24 (1"& ½") scale NAME Day project for this year. The instructions and parts for those two scales are more or less the same. 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon (PDT), 1:00 to 3:00 PM (EDT)

12:00 to 3:00 PM (PDT), 3:00 to 5:00 (EDT), we will demo the Reverse Painting Technique to make the top to your counter and Luci will demo how you can light your area.

3:00 PM to 5:00 PM (PDT), 5:00 to 7:00 (EDT), will be a time for Surprises, Prizes, Games and Chat. After that period, those who choose to continue to work and chat can go until sunrise if needed but will not have instruction after hours. You can help each other however, just like we do in clubs all over.

For you Quarter Scalers, we are not providing instruction and demos until Saturday, October 24th, 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon (PDT), 1:00 to 3:00 PM (EDT). So many of you Quarter Scalers are participating in the Quarter Connection NAME Day that we thought you should at least start your kit there and we will be there to help you with questions and finishing the week after. And those who will be doing the quarter scale on your own, we will be there to help from start to finish if needed or at least for two hours. Quarter Scalers will want to join us on October 3rd however, for the Reverse Painting Technique, the Lighting and the Games and Chat portions.

Please be sure you have ordered your kits. We hope you’ve already done so but if not, there are some cutters who can still take orders so you will have to ask them if they can accommodate you. The Cutter List is on the NAME website under Events then NAME Day, on the MCC io group and on the NAME Online group under Files. Registration Form is also on the NAME website, MCC and NAME Online under Files/ NAME Day.

Good SamSadly, we lost one of our most enthusiastic volunteers in June. Dan Bonfield, husband of our exhibit chairman, Joan, passed away from heart issues. He will be missed by all the friends he made with his happy disposition. One of our long time dealers, Kathy Tepper of Rainbow Hand, passed away from complications of stroke and cancer. Her talents will be greatly missed at the show.

Our White Elephant chair has moved to Oregon to be closer to family. Don’t worry. She plans to be back for the show and we have an extra year to collect great “stuff “!

We certainly miss not having the show in October, but we’ll be back in 2021 with wonderful things to add to all those minis you’ve been working on while sheltering. We’re looking forward to seeing new exhibits from you!Stay well mini friends!Ruth Heisch

Redwood Small World: Hello all. Not much going on here on the North Coast. Everyone is still a little leery of getting together in these uncertain times. All of us are healthy, besides knee surgery for our Vice President, Gail Freemen, and we plan to stay that way. We did have a small meet-ing in June on my porch with wonderful warm temperatures. Dorelee Heisler was our hostess and provided us a great project of a woven rush stool. Some painted their stool, while others stained the wooden legs and supports. The finished projects looked so professional. Very well done, girls. We entertained two guests of Kay Tirsbeck’s family, her daughter Garnett and her hus-band Dick. Strawberry shortcake was en-joyed with tons of whipped cream.

With limited visiting opportunities, many of us have been busy on E-Bay collecting treasures. Jean German, one of our octo-genarian members, has limited computers skills and loves for us younger ones to help her bid on and buy her treasured Renwal. She gets so excited!! With the second item that came up on the screen she cried, “Oh, I need that, I need that!!” By the end of the afternoon we had bid on and purchased seven items that she “needed.” We ALL love getting things in the mail.

We are planning on meetings as usual, but things keeping changing as I’m sure you all know. Just keep creating and shar-ing, even if it’s just on E-Bay!coast, what ever that may be.

Our Little Mini Club: There is really not much news to report from the Chico area at this time. The tragic Camp Fire in No-vember of 2018 took its toll on our club. Several have moved from the area com-pletely and others now live at a distance, making it impossible to gather regularly for meetings. Four of us live in the area and we would be able to get together if the virus was not prohibiting meetings at this time.

Recently, a friend gave me a few minia-tures. Among them she found a really cute little mouse with a mop bucket and her sponge for cleaning. There were a few oth-er accessories so she decided that she would be able to put them in a little open room box had also been given. She plans to paper or paint the walls, add flooring and put up some window dressings for a Mouse House.

Fresno Tinker Belles: Fresno Tinker Belles have been meeting every other week during July. Most of us are working on “Rose,” the newest book from the Better-leys. It is such a cute story and an adorable little hedgehog as Rose.

Angela Crain has joined us and NAME too. She loves 1" scale and works on her houses while we work on 1/4" scale. We have another new member, Barbara Enci-nas and she loves 1" scale. She is a teacher and will need to start school soon. Barbara has also joined NAME.

We have ordered our NAME DAY KITS and now looking forward to having a spe-cial day. We plan on having Oct 1st as our NAME DAY.

There are two fast food places in the parking lot of HobbyTown so we can work, eat, and work until we are tired all at the same location.

We are all missing the miniature shows close enough to attend but are hoping that next year will be better and we can play more.

Mini Attics: The never-ending Corona virus has given us time to dig through our many unfinished mini projects and work on them. Diane Phillips finished the project from Mini Cams workshop in June 2017. Diane made hers into a quilt shop, which she is quite pleased with. I finished my Southwest house, which was from a class taught at the Tucson convention. It was quite a challenge and ended up being unin-tentionally kit-bashed. There is a feeling of great satisfaction when you finish a project.

Carol Walls attended two NAME online luncheons, purchased some roundtable kits, and attended club presidents meet-ings, all on Zoom. She is hoping to finish a project soon.

Carol is planning a Zoom meeting for the Mini Attics as soon as she solves her cam-era problem. I heard though the grapevine

have been working on projects at home and are looking forward to sharing and meeting with one another again.

The MiniCals plan to host workshops in January 2021, including the postponed At-tic workshop, our March Spring Fling, and several others to be determined. Informa-tion will be in a future Small Talk.

Wee Housers of the Peninsula: The Wee Housers are still on hiatus! We do keep in touch by email and hope to have Zoom meetings soon.

Some of us have been busy, still cleaning out, sorting miniatures and working on proj-ects. I took two workshops through NAME (What a great idea to offer workshops and roundtables from the canceled Portland houseparty.). Carl Brondsdon’s Jewel Box Shop, shown below, was a great workshop, and I actually finished it! I think it will be a pastry shop filled with some of the cakes and pastries I have made. I also finished a 1/4 scale greenhouse from a workshop I took in 2019.

Through the Looking Glass: Through the Looking Glass members continue to shelter in place and respect our social distancing. We are all working on miniature projects and through the magic of technology we are able to continue to stay in touch and share our progress and good ideas.

In July we celebrated our Club’s theme of all things Alice in Wonderland with our annual Unbirthday Tea Party on-line. Sometimes it took a little ingenuity but we all were able to deliver and receive small gifts and surprise un-birthday presents that we enjoyed opening together.

Juanita Landa and Lynne Hoffman par-ticipated in the NAME on-line project and round table kit sales. Being able to see what they made and hearing about their experi-ence has encouraged the rest of us to join in next time!

We are thinking about and discussing ways and means of celebrating NAME Day together early in October. We hope to come up with small gifts and accessory kits that Juanita has generously offered to drive and deliver to each member’s doorstep.

We are all very proud of our improved tech skills and very much look forward to and enjoy our get-togethers on Club Meet-ing Day. As one of our members said, “Aren’t we lucky to have miniatures! I am never bored!”

—Barbara Adams

Itty Bitties: TThe Itty Bitties Miniature Club has had several meetings on Zoom. We enjoyed getting together to share ideas and projects that we have been working on or have finished. We have all been home so most of us have finished some of the proj-ects that having been sitting on the shelves for some time. We are taking advantage of the stay at home orders to work on minis.

Some of our club members participated in an online workshop taught by Deb Laue through Zoom. We dressed a little girl doll and her dolly. We even learned how to make shoes for the little girl doll. Thank-fully the dolly, which is so much smaller, already had shoes on! Kathy dressed a bear instead which was just as cute as the dolls. We all had a great time and were very hap-py with our finished projects. It is always fun to work on projects with friends. We hope to have more online workshops in the future.

At our last meeting, Dr. Debra Taylor taught us how to prepare cotton or silk fabric and freezer paper so we can print an image on it. It was very detailed and informative. Additional information: 1). If you want your printed fabric to be wash-able, the fixative must be applied before the freezer paper and printing process

2). If you use Pellon’s wonder under or Heat n bond, remember that these leave ad-hesive permanently adhered to your fabric. The freezer paper leaves no residue.
