(seven assists, fi ve steals) and Clemson (eight assists). Despite playing in just 11 of the team’s 18 games this season, Ostrowski leads the team lead in assists (68), while committing just 21 turnovers.

A Long-Distance Relationship: Zane Johnson knows three-pointers. Last year, the Phoenix native set a new school single-season record for threes (98) and led the WAC and finished 8th in the NCAA in three-pointers made per game (3.23). This year, the senior guard has a team-high 52 three-pointers (3.06 pg), ranking 11th in the country. Johnson hit six three-pointers in each of UH’s win over Cal State Northridge (Nov. 14), Clemson (Dec. 25) and at Fresno State (Jan. 12) and has accomplished that feat nine times in his career. Johnson, who leads the team at 15.1 ppg, has buried more than half of the team’s 92 three-pointers. He has nailed at least one three-pointer in 40 of the last 41 games dating back to last year and has failed to make a three-pointer just three times in 48 career games at UH. In just 48 games, Johnson is already ranked fifth all-time in career three-pointers made with 150. Coming Up Big: Center Vander Joaquim con-tinues to give UH a strong inside presence. The 6-10 junior is averaging a 13.6 ppg while adding a team-high 9.7 rpg and 1.8 bpg. Joaquim has recorded five double-doubles in this year, including a 23-point, 16-rebound performance that helped lift UH to a road overtime win at Fresno State (Jan. 12). Joaquim scored 14 of the team’s final 20 points and earned WAC Player of the Week honors for his efforts—one of his two POW awards this year. The native of Luanda, Angola, who was the team’s top rebounder (9.1 rpg) and third-leading scorer (11.9 ppg) in league games last year, was named to the 2011-12 preseason all-WAC first team after a sum-mer in which he gained valuable experience compet-ing with the Angolan national team.

Swan Song in the WAC: Hawai‘i is in its 33rd and final season in the Western Athletic Conference. The Rainbow Warriors will join the Big West beginning in 2012. UH finished with an 8-8 mark in 2010-11, good for a tie for fifth place in the standings. The senior member of the conference, the Rainbow Warriors have won two regular-season titles (1997, 2002) and three tournament titles (1994, 2001, ’02). UH holds a 234-290 (.447) all-time record in regular-season games.

National Exposure: UH has made the most of its national television appearances this year, going 3-1. The ’Bows were featured in the ESPN College Hoops Tipoff Marathon on Nov. 14 and trounced Cal State Northridge, 84-62. The Rainbow Warriors also made three appearances on ESPNU during the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, making an impression with upset wins over Xavier and Clemson.

Calling All Nations: UH will again fi eld a diverse squad with players from eight diff erent states (Arizona, California, Hawai‘i, New York, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Washington D.C.) and four for-eign countries (Angola, Germany, Israel and Latvia). GAME 17Nevada 77, Hawai‘i 74 Jan. 14, 2012Lawlor Events Center

RENO, Nev. – Hawai’i came tantalizingly close to a historic win before fall-ing victim to a late Nevada rally in a 77-74 loss. The loss denied the Rainbow Warriors (10-7, 2-1 WAC) an undefeated Western Athletic Conference start and kept them winless in 15 all-time trips to Reno. Deonte Burton scored a game-high 25 points, including nine of the team’s final 11 points to key the Nevada (14-3, 4-0 WAC) comeback. Olek Czyk added 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Malik Story scored 15 to give the Wolf Pack their 11th straight win and keep them atop the WAC standings. Vander Joaquim led UH with 22 points, seven rebounds and a career-high seven blocks. Joston Thomas poured in 21 points, while Zane Johnson added 11. Jeremiah Ostrowki again was efficient at the point, dishing out nine assists. UH seemed poised to pick up its first-ever win at Nevada, taking a seven-point lead, 70-63, on a Joaquim three-point play with 4:48 left. But the Wolf Pack scored 10 unanswered points—capped by a Burton three-pointer with 2:07 left—to give Nevada the lead for good. The ‘Bows did have an opportunity to send the game into overtime on its last possession but their upset bid faded as Johnson’s contested three-point attempt from the wing fell off the mark. UH shot 50 percent for the game but went without a field goal during a crucial four-minute period down the stretch and turned the ball over on two pos-sessionsritical possessions late in the game. The last five minutes spoiled an otherwise brilliant effort for the Rainbow Warriors who were looking for its second straight road win after beating Fresno State in overtime on Thursday. UH came out to play from the opening tip and engaged in a back-and-forth affair. The lead was changed 10 times in the first half alone as the Wolf Pack took a narrow 35-34 advantage at the break. UH went on a 12-6 run out of the locker room and led for much of the second half. The Rainbow Warriors built its lead to seven points on a pair of occasions late in the game, but ultimately couldn’t hang on.

GAME 18Louisiana Tech 74, Hawai‘i 70 Jan. 19, 2012Stan Sheriff Center

HONOLULU – A short-handed Hawai’i squad suffered a disappointing 74-70 loss to Louisiana Tech Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 10-8 overall and 2-2 in the Western Athletic Conference with its second straight setback. Raheem Appleby poured in 28 points, the highest individual output by a UH opponent this year, to help the Bulldogs (9-10, 1-3 WAC) snap a four-game losing streak and pick up their first conference win of the year. UH, meanwhile, dropped its second straight league game in the closing seconds after opening league play 2-0. The Rainbow Warrriors played without senior captains Zane Johnson and Jeremiah Ostrowski who were both sidelined. The ‘Bows also went the final five minutes of the game without its other captain, Vander Joaquim, who fouled out. Joston Thomas led UH with 22 points and six rebounds, while Joaquim added 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocks before exiting with his fifth foul. Shaquille Stokes chipped in 10 points and five assists. UH shot 51 percent from the floor, but went just 19-of-31 from the free throw line, turned the ball over 17 times and were out-rebounded 31-30. Hawai’i, which trailed for most of the game, fell behind as many as eight points in the first half before taking a 38-34 deficit into the locker room. The second half was nip-and-tuck with the difference never growing to more than six points. The Rainbow Warriors took the lead on two occasions in the second half, including a 56-55 advantage on a Stokes three-pointer with 8:31 left. However, La Tech fired back with a 10-4 run, to take the lead for good. UH cut the margin to one point on a pair of Bobby Miles free throws with just over a minute remaining, but Appelby responded with a clutch jumper for La Tech on the next possession. After stealing a Bulldog pass in the closing seconds, UH had one last chance to tie the game, but Trevor Wiseman’s three-point attempt fell off the mark.

HIGHLIGHTS AT UH Led UH to its first win over a nationally ranked team in six

years with a 84-82 overtime upset of #14 Xavier in the 2011 Hawaiian Airlines Diamnd Head Classic.

UH completed a turnaround-season under head coach Gib Arnold with 19 wins, nearly doubling the win total (10) from the year prior and assuring itself a winning record this year after three straight losing seasons.

The 19 wins were the most in a season since 2003-04 and Arnold tied Bruce O’Neil for most wins by a first-year head coach in the collegiate era.

Arnold was the first UH skipper to win his UH debut since his father Frank accomplished the feat with a 79-76 win over Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 22, 1985

UH won its first five games of the season for its best start in six years

UH earned a bid to the CollegeInsider.com Post Season Tournament and won its first-round game versus Portland. It was the program’s first postseason appearance and first post-season win since 2003-04.

The ’Bows posted an impressive 14-5 record at home and accumulated its most road wins (4) since the 2003-04 season.

The team set a school record and ranked in eighth in the country in field goal percentage defense (.389)

First recruiting class was ranked as high as fifth nationally.

HIGHLIGHTS PRIOR TO UH Tabbed as one of the nation’s top assistant coaches and

recruiters by numerous media outlets.

Helped USC achieve a record three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, three straight 20-win seasons and the winningest five-year stretch in school history.

In two seasons as head coach of the College of Southern Idaho, led the team to a 57-14 record and a third-place finish in the 2005 NJCAA Tournament.

Two-time District 13 Coach of the Year at College of Southern Idaho. Mentored 17 players that eventually earned Division I scholarships.

Has coached and recruited 11 NBA players in 13 years, including first-round picks O.J. Mayo, DeMar DeRozen and Taj Gibson of USC.

When Gib Arnold was hired as the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa in March 2010, he inherited a once-proud program mired in the midst of three straight losing seasons. Many in the basketball realm considered his reclamation project as one of the most challenging for the newest crop of first-year head coaches. But that didn’t stop the 42-year-old Arnold whose “All In” approach has rejuvenated Rainbow Warrior basketball and has set a winning foundation for years to come. Arnold went to work fast, reeling in a nationally ranked recruiting class despite an abbrevi-ated window following his hire. His first UH recruiting class was rated fifth best in the nation by The Hoop Scoop. Arnold meshed that class with a sparse, yet talented, group of returning upper-classmen to complete a remarkable turnaround season in 2010-11. UH finished the year with 19 wins, nearly doubling its win total (10) from the year prior. The 19 wins were the most for the school in seven years and tied Arnold with Bruce O’Neil for the most wins in program history by a first-year head coach. There were numerous other highlights along the way. UH won its first five games of the season for its best start in six years; the ’Bows went 2-1 in the prestigious Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic; UH re-established its home court advantage with a 14-5 record at the Stan Sheriff Center and accumulated its most road wins in seven years. Arnold also molded a formidable defensive unit as UH set a new school record for field-goal percentage defense, a mark that ranked eighth in the nation in 2010-11. Even when things got rough, Arnold was able to keep his team together. After an 0-5 start in league play, UH ended the regular season by winning nine of its last 12 games, and eight of its last 11 in Western Athletic Conference play. The year concluded with a bid to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament and a victory in its first-round game versus Portland. It was the pro-gram’s first postseason appearance and first postseason win since 2003-04. Arnold received national acclaim from Athlon Sports who named him one of the five best first-year coaches in 2010-11 after working “a minor miracle” at UH. It was only inevitable that Arnold would one day lead his own Division I program. In recent years, Arnold was tabbed by numerous outlets as one of the nation’s top assistants and recruiters after serving for schools in the Pac-10, Southeastern Conference and West Coast Conference. He also boasted head coaching experience having guided junior-college power College of Southern Idaho for two seasons. It was even more fitting he would make the leap at Hawai‘i, where he was named the pro-gram’s 19th head coach. Arnold returns to Hawai‘i, following the footsteps of his father Frank who served as UH head basketball coach for two seasons at UH (1985-87). Prior to arriving in Hawai‘i, Arnold coached at USC where he was an assistant for five seasons. He was instrumental in helping USC achieve a record three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, three straight 20-win seasons and the winningest five-year stretch in school history. In 2009, Arnold helped USC capture the inaugural Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, hosted by Hawai‘i. Arnold was the lead recruiter for former Trojan standouts DeMar DeRozan and Taj Gibson, both of whom were selected in the first round of the 2009 NBA Draft, as well 2011 first-round pick Nikola Vucevic. During his career, Arnold has recruited more than 20 international players to play college basketball in the United States. Two of those players eventually went on to the NBA, including Vucevic (Montenegro) and Yakouba Diawara (France). Arnold first received recognition for his coaching prowess while an assistant at Pepperdine. He spent four seasons (2000-03) there as the Waves won more Division I games in his tenure than during any other four-year span in school history. For his work, Athlon Sports named Arnold one of the top 10 Division I assistants in the country. In between stints at USC and Pepperdine, Arnold spent two seasons as the head men’s bas-ketball coach at the College of Southern Idaho. There he posted a 57-14 record, including a 33-3 mark in his second season. His Golden Eagles won the 2005 Scenic West Athletic Conference title and the Region 18 Tournament and advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association tourney, where they finished third. In 2004, CSI went 24-11, won the Region 18 tourney and advanced to the NJCAA tournament. He was named District 13 Coach of the Year in both of his years there and during that time mentored 17 players that eventually earned Division I scholarships. His teams held the highest accumulative team GPA in school history dur-ing his tenure. Arnold’s coaching journey has also taken him to Loyola Marymount, Vanderbilt, Utah Valley State College and Provo High School as an assistant coach. A graduate of Punahou School, Arnold was a prep All-American and Hawai‘i’s high school Gatorade Player of the Year.
