The Holy Cross School, New Malden celebrates its 80th Anniversary In 1881 a house called “Southesk” was built in Sandal Road. It was surrounded by fields. The first occupants were the Austine Family. They had 3 children: Beatrice (15), Alice (12) and Henry (13), and Eliza who was a servant. Over the front door there is a Latin inscription, which in English says, “this is the house that John built” – John was Mr Austine’s first name. In 1931 the last of the Austine family had died and the Sisters of the Holy Cross bought “Southesk” from Mr Thomas, the solicitor who was dealing with the estate. The Sisters of the Holy Cross already had a Convent and School in West Wimbledon. The Bishop (Amigo) asked them to start another School in New Malden. Sr Christina, and two other Sisters moved into the house in June 1931. On 23rd September 1931 Holy Cross Convent School was opened with 5 Students. Above excerpt taken from ‘History of the School’, a piece written by Sr Margaret which features in the ‘Memories of Holy Cross Book’ produced for 75th Anniversary of the school in 2007. Copies are available from the school. Over the years the school has grown and more buildings have been added, but the original house front, with minor alterations, still remains as the main entrance to the school. The school is holding an 80th Anniversary Reunion on Saturday 12th May 2012 from 1.15pm to 6pm and all past pupils and staff are welcome to attend. It will be a chance for you to catch up with old friends, tour the school and attend the Thanksgiving Mass. For this special occasion there will also be a Grand Raffle to raise money for the work that the Holy Cross Sisters do for children in the Karnataka State in India. By royal approval (well, The Royal Borough of Kingston!) the residents (and friends) of the Beverley Park area have once again been granted permission to hold a ‘street party’ in the grounds of BP (that’s Beverley Park, not Buckingham Palace!) - this time to officially celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Jubilations (Part 1)Diamond Life by Robin GillWorking to ruleAs you cannot fail to realise, this year marks the Diamond Jubilee of the Queens reign. Her coronation took place on Tuesday 2nd June 1953, and the celebrations in Malden were covered in the Village Voice of March 2010 (“To Crown It All”).The events programme lasted from 30th May to 7th June, I wonder how many residents still have their commemorative teaspoon from the Council, given to all the borough’s schoolchildren.

Older than you thinkPart of the celebrations then (and in June this year), were gatherings of people in street parties. Most people think of these particular festivities originated from those on VE Day in 1945, but in fact their roots go back to “Peace Teas” held to celebrate the end of the Crimean War in 1856. Tea was very expensive then,

and newspaper reports frequently stated how much was spent on this luxury item.These celebrations were held in local buildings, and it wasn’t until the official end of the 1st World War, celebrated by Peace Day on 19th July 1919, that the revelry was organised on a street by street basis, and this has continued to the present day.Diamond Jubilees are pretty rare as regards monarchs of the United Kingdom; the last one was the 60th anniversary of the reign of Queen Victoria in 1897. Locally it was normally left to communities to decide how best to celebrate the occasion.

Cottage industry Kingston decided to build a “cottage hospital” for local residents. In March the Mayor of Kingston Alfred Homersham wrote to the Queen on behalf of the borough requesting her patronage for the intended facility. She was unable to give this, but agreed that the hospital could be called

the Kingston Victoria Hospital. The Duke Of Cambridge gave three acres of land in Coombe Lane for the site of the building. He was offered the position of President of the Hospital, which he accepted. The Mayoress Sophia Homersham cut the first sod of the land on Jubilee Day (21st June). Work progressed rapidly, and by the beginning of November, Mayor Homersham was able to lay the foundation stone for the structure. The cost was estimated to total between £4000 and £5000, all of which had been raised by public subscription, and special events such as a concert at the Royal County Theatre in Fife Road. The hospital was ready for its grand opening two weeks before Christmas the following year (1898), the ceremony performed by the Duke Of Cambridge who used a gold key for the occasion. The building which originally had accommodation for ten patients stood in Coombe Lane close to Norbiton Station. Enlarged with 44 beds, together with other hospitals, it joined the NHS in 1948, but in 1950 the Regional Hospital Board decided that the function of the building should change to become a special gynaecological unit of Kingston Hospital, rather than a general cottage hospital. Despite a petition containing over 40,000 signatures from both Kingston and Malden, and various questions in Parliament, it was decided that the Kingston and Malden Victoria Hospital should close. After a prolonged refit, it reopened in its new guise in 1951 before becoming a branch of the Royal Eye Unit in 1981. The New Victoria Hospital opened at Coombe Manor in Coombe Lane West in 1958, whilst the original building was demolished in 1995, and the site in Coombe Road is now occupied by a care home, and Jemmett Close.


An Institution Meanwhile, back in 1897, Old Malden had to decide what their memorial for the Diamond Jubilee would be. Rev Thomas Birkett Dover who had been vicar of St John The Baptist since December 1894 was of the opinion that the parish would benefit from a hall or institute. At a meeting held in April at the National School (now Malden Parochial) it was decided to proceed with this plan on a site (quarter of an acre)given by Merton College on open land. By August nearly £650 had been collected by voluntary donations, and building could commence. The architect was Henry Saul from Gray’s Inn Square. The red brick building’s main rooms were a hall (38’ x 22’), and another room (22’ x 18’) to be used as a billiard room, with full size table presented by Harry Hylton Foster of Tolworth Hall. The foundation stone was laid in November by Mr Tommy Bucknill the local MP (Epsom and Ewell), who was presented with a silver trowel for the occasion. In the stone was placed details of the ceremony, a current newspaper, and a Jubilee medal. It was hoped that the hall would last for many years, and would remind the grandchildren of those present of their Queen’s Jubilee.The club was formally opened in June of the following year (1898) the ceremony performed again by Mr Bucknill who

had been elected president. The total cost of the premises complete with fixtures and fittings was £1200. As well as Mr Hylton-Foster’s kind gift, the Worcester Park Beagles had provided 50 chairs; Mr Charles Madge of Newhouse Farm (now Columbia Court), a bagatelle board and Mr Bucknill presented the club with a portrait of Queen Victoria. The building still stands today, over 100 years later, and

even after a spell as a “civic cafe” in the Second World War, still carries out its original function, and is used not only by parishioners, but by all in the surrounding neighbourhood.

Nursing Times Early in Jubilee Year (April 1897), in New Malden, a meeting was held at the Institute (now part of Waitrose) to discuss how to celebrate the upcoming occasion. James Bryant a local dairyman living in the Kingston Road had, ten years previously, (Victoria’s Golden Jubilee) put forward the idea of

opening a nursing institute. For that celebration (1887) the “Women Of England” had collected a fund of £70,000 (the area that included New Malden contributed over £375). The Queen decided that this money should be used for nursing, and various towns and cities opened nursing institutes which accommodated nurses employed to care

for people in their own homes. New Malden were not in a position to open one then but, ten years later they felt they were now able to do so.A house would be rented or bought for the nurse(s) to live in, and they would attend patients where required. Residents would pay a small fee to enrol in the scheme (3 to 10 shillings a year). If a nurse was required to live in the patient’s home, the charge (to the patient) would be between 2 and 10 shillings a week. The monies were dependent on the patient’s circumstances. Mr Bryant’s idea was not the only one put forward; another suggestion was a cottage hospital similar to Kingston’s proposal, but this was felt to be too ambitious a project, and it was possible that the nursing institute might develop into such a facility over the years. Other suggestions were a town clock, a recreation ground, or a public library, all facilities which Malden lacked. There was even an idea for a fire escape, although it is not clear which building this would have been attached to. The county of Surrey was also collecting money in order to build a convalescent home for women (finally built at

Bognor Regis), and Malden could have contributed money towards this, or if the village was able to raise as much as £200, they could send six women a year to the seaside for

a fortnight.All these ideas had to be considered, and it was decided to form a committee to look into them. This committee decided to form a sub-committee to explore the idea of the nursing institute, and came back with recommendations that a circular be sent to all the residents of the district asking for subscriptions towards the project. This was agreed, and a number of ladies were

appointed to collect the money from the households. Meanwhile at the next district council meeting (June 1st) the chairman Frederick Merryweather, proposed that the council send an illuminated address to the Queen sealed on 21st June complimenting her on her long reign. The proposal was carried unanimously. The address was inscribed on vellum, and after congratulating the Queen, it praised the advancements in art and science, and the benefits they had bought in social and domestic life. The address was signed by the chairman on behalf of the members.

By the middle of June, £50 out of the £200 required for the institute, had been subscribed, and by the end of October, the committee were advised that this had risen to £68 with promises of annual subscriptions amounting to another £30. The meeting presided over by John Bignall decided to start up the nursing institute with Mr T Astley as President, and Mrs Mary Bevan as Lady President. Mrs Bevan who lived at Coombe Court was the wife of Wilfrid Bevan a banker and director of Barclays Bank when it used to be Barclay Bevan & Co. She was to remain president for over 30 years. The association was originally called “The New Malden and Coombe (the part within New Malden parish) Victoria Nursing Institute” Fortunately this was soon truncated to “The Queen Victoria Nursing Institute (New Malden)”. The object being, to provide a nurse or nurses to tend the sick of the parish. The executive committee composed entirely of ladies were to act as superintendents of the nurse(s), while the “council” composed of ten men and ten women would manage the institute. Most members of the council had either a religious or medical background. A property was found in Cleveland Road and a nurse employed. It was soon found that as more people moved into the district, a larger property was required, and another house was found in Westbury Road (Taku). In time the institute became the “Malden & Coombe District Nursing Association” and had (by World War Two) premises in Poplar Grove. With the advent of the NHS

Around 24 local organisations will be showing off their artistic flair and decorating trees for their favourite charities. Last year saw entries from a host of local organisations including the Scouts, Guides, Brownies, Tudor Williams and various Church groups. The Festival usually raises a few hundred pounds for charities so make sure you pop into the Church to view the trees and vote for your favourite one.

So just how many company finance initiatives do you think we have? Political leaders have, over the years, taken great pride in launching their own initiative, their pet idea – new fresh and different from the last one – mainly because it was ’invented here’. They then go on to rubbish the fading and failing predecessor and show how their idea is better. Its title? Well, you can simply put your hand into a scrabble bag and come out with some odd letters and there you have it – created in a party think tank, designed by Whitehall and ignored by everyone. So I have made a small effort to try and identify the current crop of acronyms and jumbled letters. Now I can’t be sure that this is a complete list, as no doubt there are some other economic initiatives that the Ministry of Ministerial Affairs has developed that I have not been made aware of. The list is quite extensive, with seven as far as I can see. With the Budget nearly upon us, we can all hear a

consistent theme of business focus and investment and the tired phrase of ’joined up thinking’. I believe the intentions behind each of these initiatives are worthy ones, however upon asking business people about them you find a huge disconnect. 1-National Loan Guarantees Scheme - NLGS (credit easing) up to £20bn of bank guarantees. Seems to have got off to a slow start as SMEs say banks are slow or reluctant to take up the scheme. 2-Business Finance Partnership - BFP £1bn. Government to invest alongside private investors. 3-Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme - EFGS £2bn. So far, since 2008, £1.4bn to 13,900 companies and another £2bn announced (complaints from some applicants that this is failing as banks still want personal guarantees on top of the government scheme!). 4-Export Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme - EEFGS. Launched April 2011 but so far only 5 loans made for £2.9m of trade! It is now to be merged into the UK Export Finance’s schemes (ECGD). 5-Enterprise Capital Funds - ECF - a Quango run by Capital for Enterprise awarded an additional £300m in March 2011. 6-Regional Growth Fund - RGF £2.4bn; so far 140 businesses have received £190m. 7-Business Growth Fund - BGF £2.5bn, launched in May 2011,a bank led fund but so far funded only 4 projects.Confused? Not surprising. Roughly this adds up to something over £30bn, which is a considerable amount of firepower – but I wonder just

how many people know about all or any of these and where and how they may be applicable. Judging by the number of them, there must be a small office somewhere in Whitehall dedicated to just dreaming up names for new initiatives. Just imagine then what could happen if such financial muscle was concentrated in an effective manner? That would be a dramatic display of strength. Perhaps I could suggest some equally baffling acronyms that they should consider which might be more appropriate. Possibly the British Unrestricted Growth Guarantee Enterprise Reserve - Overseas Funding Facility. This would focus on our exports and be designed to get all of those in the way, out of the way and thus achieving a practical use for the acronym.To this you could also add the very officious action team whose task would be to blow away the red tape and petty bureaucracy that holds up so much planning and development. Again the acronym seems to fit here for the Strategic Opportunity Direct Development Initiative Taskforce. The serious and key point here though is all about focus – being able to directly apply financial support and initiative is not as easy as it sounds. Good ideas may filter through just as water does through porous rock, but they take years to see any effect. Such initiatives must not just be able to make some tangible difference but just as importantly be seen to be doing so. Such issues directly effect that economic turnkey – confidence. VVoice

Good News at EasterEaster is an important time for Christians as they remember the death and resurrection of Jesus. It conjures up images of expectation and disappointment, treachery, injustice, cruelty and despair followed by perplexity, hope, restoration and, finally, unbridled joy.

Palm Sunday (April 1) reminds us of the scenes of jubilation as Jesus entered Jerusalem nearly 2,000 years ago, welcomed enthusiastically by the people there for the Passover celebration. But five days later the crowds were baying for his blood, egged on by their religious leaders. Jesus went through a mockery of a trial, was tortured

and subjected to one of the cruellest forms of execution ever devised. Could this man who quietly allowed himself to be treated so shamefully really be the Son of God? The most dramatic twist to the story came three days later when his followers claimed that he had risen from the dead. Attempts by the authorities, and by numerous people since, all failed to disprove this claim. The resurrection of Jesus was central to the ‘Gospel’ (Good News) taught by the early church. It is still central today. The concept of life springing from death is all around us in Springtime as flowers and crops burst into life. On Easter Sunday Christians celebrate new life emerging

from a tomb in Jerusalem 2000 years ago. Jesus is a living hope! Local churches will be celebrating the death and resurrection of Jesus with a variety of services and special events over the Easter weekend and anybody is invited, whether they share the Christian faith or not. Churches in New Malden join together for their customary Walk of Witness on Good Friday, April 6, the day which marks the death of Jesus. Starting from the United Reformed Church in Malden Road, the procession will go up the High Street to the Methodist Church, for an open-air service. New Malden Baptist Church is staging the rock musical Godspell by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak on April 5 and 6. Godspell is based on the Gospel of Matthew and presents the parables and other teachings of

Kingston Welcomes May Time Merriness If you’re looking for the ideal way to round off the summer’s first bank holiday weekend then look no further than Kingston’s May Merrie celebration. In the Ancient Market Place, enjoy some visual delights with aerial gymnastics displays from local aerialist Katie Hardwick. The daring amongst you can even try this yourself with help from the experts. The kids will also love getting up close to the incredible birds of prey and watching the stunning falconry displays. Memorial Gardens will be

transformed into the Kids’ Corner; your little ones will be treated to free facepainting, glittery henna tattoos and the chance to feed and stroke some live farm animals at the amazing Mill Cottage Farm Experience, complete with alpacas. They can even get a bit messy with the brilliant mosaic making craft workshop where you can design and glue your very own mosaic to take home. For the grown ups, there will be a musical showcase of up and coming talent from Kingston University students.

Fun with flowersThe Malden & Coombe Flower Decoration Society was formed in 1954 by a local florist and the Inaugural meeting was attended by the late Julia Clements, the renowned flower arranger, and attended by 250 enthusiastic prospective members.Over the years members have arranged flowers in Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s and Southwark Cathedrals and for various Royal occasions. Sadly over the years membership has declined and with

lack of members willing to serve on the Committee the club was due to close at the end of 2011 after 58 years. Fortunately in the autumn some keen new flower arrangers came along to our meetings and several of them have joined the committee enabling the club to carry on.

We are a friendly club who welcome visitors to our meetings which are held in St James Church Hall, Bodley Road, New Malden, at 7.50 pm on the third Thursday of the month. Our next meeting is on Thursday, 19th April, and will be an In-House Demonstration by four of our talented members.At our meetings on Thursdays, 17th May and 19th July, we have NAFAS Demonstrators coming to our Club so it is a fantastic opportunity to learn something new. Also at our meeting on 21st June we hope to have a special evening to celebrate the Queen's

Perfect for a special Easter Sunday meal this indulgent dessert has a chocolate sponge base, creamy white chocolate mousse filling and a rich and dark chocolate glaze. It can be prepared the day before or made a couple of weeks in advance and frozen.

Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas 4. Grease and line the base of a 20 cm round spring-form tin. To make the base, whisk the eggs and sugar together in a large heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water until very thick and pale – the whisk should leave a trail in the mixture when lifted. Sift over the flour and cocoa and fold in gently. Pour into the prepared tin and bake for 12-15 minutes until just springy to the touch. Turn out and leave to cool completely. Clean the tin and lightly grease and re-line the base. Place the cold sponge in the base of the tin.To make the mousse, place the white chocolate, milk and vanilla extract in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until

smooth then stir in 4 tbsp of the cream. Dissolve the gelatine in 2 tbsp hot water. Cool for a few minutes then stir into the chocolate mixture. Softly whip the rest of the cream and fold into the chocolate mixture. Whisk the egg whites until stiff and fold in. Spoon the mousse over the sponge base and chill for 3-4 hours until set.For the chocolate glaze, melt the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat, stir until smooth then stir in the cream. Leave until cool and thick enough to spread, stirring occasionally. Remove the mousse cake from the tin and gently spread the chocolate glaze over the top. Drizzle with melted white chocolate and decorate with the chocolate eggs. VVoice

Anyone for tennis?Local sporting legend, Alec Stewart, is best known of course as a cricketer. The most capped English cricketer ever, he has had an illustrious playing career leading both his county, Surrey, and his country to victory on numerous occasions. Our local Cricket Club, Malden Wanderers, is where he learned to play his cricket and he has fond memories of his time as a Colt at the Club, as well as playing for the senior sides. But he also has firmly fixed in his memories the tennis courts at Malden Wanderers ~ he was also a junior Tennis Member at the Club. He is therefore giving his wholehearted support to the Club’s endeavours to refurbish the tennis facility. The all-weather surface and the perimeter netting will need to be replaced soon, and we are working hard to find ways of funding the refurbishment. Not everyone realises that we do still have a tennis court, tucked away behind the Clubhouse in Cambridge Avenue, New Malden, and overlooking the cricket pitch, and we currently have a number of Tennis Section Members, seniors and families. . We welcome new members ~ adults and juniors as well as families, and as well as running introductory coaching course for youngsters during the summer, the Club runs many social events throughout the year. We are ideally placed for local residents as well as commuters ~ what could be nicer on a summer’s evening than to meet up with neighbours or family straight from work, or pop down with the kids, especially during the summer holidays, and enjoy a tennis session as sociable or as competitive as you like!

We would also welcome “corporate” members ~

whether from a local company, or from a local organisation. Perhaps there are some tennis players amongst your business or club/society colleagues who would be interested in getting together as an informal group, to dig out their tennis rackets and get a bit of exercise! So if anyone is at all interested in joining our Tennis Section or playing tennis at the Wanderers, please let us know ~ we are very keen to increase the usage of the court, especially

with our local community, and it would help with our applications to know what interest there is. And who knows, if ~ as we hope ~ we do achieve the refurbishment of our tennis court, we might just see Alec Stewart wielding his tennis racket instead of his bat! New Malden Rotary Club.New Malden residents will have the opportunity to have their blood pressure checked by St. John Ambulance nurses on Saturday 28th April from 10am to 3pm.A stall will be provided next to the War Memorial in the High Street. The service is free and forms part of a nationwide campaign by the Stroke Association in partnership with Rotary International and the Ambulance Association called “Know Your Blood Pressure”. New Malden Baptist Church is staging the rock musical Godspell by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak on April 5 and 6. Godspell is based on the Gospel of Matthew and presents the parables and other teachings of Jesus, culminating in his crucifixion. The performance at the church in Kingston Road, is an amateur production by members and friends, by arrangement with Samuel French Limited. Community Awards On the 8th March 2012, Malden & Coombe Branch were proud to be able tosay that three of their members had received the Mayor's Community Award for outstanding service to the community. The recipients were Major Ron Morris, June and John Fairclough. June and John received their award for work with the 1st Scout movement for over 40 years but

A right old marathon!

As the date of the London marathon approaches some New Malden residents are pounding the pavements as their training continues. Here are two of their stories.. Kath’s Marathon Effort: A big thank you! Part 3 By the time you read this, I’ll have just a couple of weeks until I run the London Marathon. Over the past six months, I’ve clocked up over 500 miles round Richmond Park and Wimbledon Common, running in all weathers. I’ve happily ploughed my way through plenty of carbs (porridge, peanut butter on wholemeal toast, spaghetti carbonara, oh and the odd cream cake) to make up for the 50,000 carbs I’ve burnt off! The best part of all this training, though, is that people have been so supportive and positive. I’ve been stopped in the street by strangers who want to know how the training and fundraising are going - which has been lovely. I’ve been lucky enough to team up with someone from Christ Church who is also training for the London marathon. We’ve been able to go on longer training runs together. It makes such a difference if you have someone to talk to as you start upping the mileage. Time and distance seem to fly by if you’re chatting about your family or the new book you’re reading while you run! Training for this marathon hasn’t just been about the running, though. Raising funds for charity has been very much a part of it, too. Thanks to various fundraising ventures, donations and some major sponsorship from Chicco Caffe, The New Victoria Hospital, Suttles of Malden, Tudor Williams and the New Malden Rotary Club (I’ll be wearing the red vest, pictured, with their logos on it), I’ve managed to raise over £2,500 for the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA). SIA has been a huge support to my brother, who was left paralysed after a disastrous operation on a slipped disc eight years ago. He has been in a wheelchair ever since. Without SIA, my brother and his family would have found it very difficult trying to get back to a ‘normal’ way of life.

So, as the day approaches, my thoughts now turn to Fauja Singh, from Ilford. At 100, he has become the world’s oldest marathon runner – known as the ‘Turbaned Tornado’. He completed the Toronto Waterfront marathon last October in 8 hours, 25 minutes and 16 seconds and puts his success down to ginger curry, tea and ‘being happy’. The fact he ran 10 miles a day probably helped, too! If he can run a marathon, and stay happy, then so can I. Wish me luck! Helping our Heros My name is Sarah Foote and I have lived in New Malden all my life. Several years ago I made a promise that should I ever get a place in the London Marathon then I would run for Help 4 Heroes a charity that supports and helps our injured service men and women. Having been awarded a place last October in the London Marathon 2012 via the ballot I now have the opportunity to fulfil that promise. My 4 month training programme starting on Boxing Day and has been going well. Even though I have

an ongoing battle with shin splints requiring regular treatment I have managed to stay on target with my training schedule. This is the time of year when you’re likely to start to notice the presence of slugs and snails in your garden, greenhouse, coldframe, window box....indeed just about everywhere. There are many different species; the most common in gardens are probably species of Milax (the keeled slugs) and Arion (e.g. the garden slug and the large black slug), plus the grey field slug (Deroceras reticulatus). The garden snail, Helix aspersa is generally the most troublesome but may also be joined by various species of the banded snail, Cepaea.

It never ceases to amaze me how much damage something as small as a slug can do and in such a short space of time. But then the truth of it is, there is never just one slug or one snail, you can always be sure that there will be hoards of them. I garden on clay and our soil is alkaline and so we have a plentiful supply of snails; if you garden on an acidic soil you will generally find that snails are not a problem as they need the calcium to make their shells.To say that they infuriate me would be an understatement, but the type I hate most are those small grey-black keeled slugs that do such a lot of damage to crops such as potatoes. I garden without chemicals so there is no question of using pellets, but I have tried pretty well every other trick in the book. When it comes to potatoes I grow largely earlies and early mains and these crops are less susceptible because they are lifted relatively promptly. It also pays dividends if you grow varieties such as Pentland Dell, Wilja, Charlotte, Estima and Pentland Ivory all of which show a good degree of resistance to these slugs. I also use the biological control nematode Phasmarhabdites hermaphrodita. True this may prove quite expensive but it works brilliantly against slugs, poses no environmental problems (it is a naturally occurring parasite of British slugs) and is perfect for controlling any slug that spends time underground. If you time the applications so that the crops, flowers or other plants are protected while they are at their most vulnerable, it shouldn’t be too much of an outlay.Slug and snail traps also work well, whether you buy your own ‘Slug Pubs’ or make them by plunging plastic beakers into the soil close to susceptible plants and then part filling them with beer. I once did a mini trial on Gardeners’ Question Time to see which beers slugs and snails liked best, and Guinness came out tops....with alcohol-free lager proving least popular! I also find that

milk (stale works well) is good, and if you add a small quantity of grain or porridge oats to the liquid, the pests come in at an amazing rate. Do make sure that you leave a centimetre or so of the rim of the beaker protruding above the soil level as this will greatly reduce the number of beneficial creatures such as ground beetles that inadvertently fall in to the traps. Upturned half grapefruit skins or even large cabbage leaves can also be used as traps, but remember to empty or replace these daily or else the slugs and snails will re-enter the garden.If you create barriers around plants this can help, but I find it less reliable. My preferred materials are coco-shell (the mulching material), pine needles and crushed shells (e.g. oyster shell sold by poultry feed suppliers). But whatever you use do remember to put it in a complete circle around the base of the plant, not just a ring or the slugs may simply come up inside the ring and of course check it regularly, replenishing the material as necessary.So before they start to really get a hold, show them who is boss, and take action straight away:• Encourage wildlife such as ground beetles, birds and hedgehogs as these may help to keep numbers down.• Create barriers around particularly susceptible plants.• Buy or make slug traps.• If growing potatoes concentrate on earlies and lift these as soon as possible.• Grow varieties of potato that show some resistance to attack.• Use the biological control as a soil drench to control slugs (not snails)• Attach copper strip around the circumference of pots containing slug susceptible plants.• Go on night-time slug and snail hunts.• In late autumn collect up snails from their hibernating places.

What to do with unwanted antique furniture?Local author Carl Sims has possible solutions… Some thirty years ago when we moved to our home in New Malden, we promptly put back most of which the previous owner had ripped out. Painfully, we reintroduced dado rails, picture rails, old wrought iron fireplaces; we stripped doors and exposed beautiful pine. We attacked the Sanderson’s wallpaper range to introduce a unique Victorian look and feel – which was daft as our house was 1930’s. We bought furniture from, I’d like to think antique shops, but in truth, junk shops; a real eclectic range of chest of drawers, chairs and framed prints – placed haphazardly in some kind of time warped period ranging fifty years… Later, having regained some sense of proportion and/or sense, we started to look at more contemporary furniture, but then wondered; what do you do with the, err, shall we say ‘charismatic’ furniture? There are many of us who have wonderful old furniture but have little knowledge, and to be honest, enthusiasm to do something with it. Further more – what is ‘old’? If you’re over a certain age, furniture that is 60s/70s/80s you may not consider as ‘old’ - dated possibly, old – never. But it is, and people will pay money for it. Ok, if you have an original Queen Anne sideboard you should talk to experts – now! However, if you have a Victorian/Edwardian piece then go to the little known, but staggeringly large and entertaining Kingston Antique Market (Old London Rd – just behind the fallen red telephone boxes) and they’ll give you some idea on price and may even buy it from you (failing that, have coffee in their restaurant).

Let’s get back to the more modern old furniture, 60s/70s. This period has long been popular and now recognised as ‘retro’– much of which is beautiful, well made, solid and distinctive – not least the famous G-Plan range. And if you have anything that’s 50’s you’re in luck, as these pieces are increasingly rare and very sought after. If you don’t fancy trying to get a good price for your now euphemistically called ‘pre-loved’ furniture, you can go back to London Rd, but this time visit the Princess Alice Hospice furniture shop. Have a chat and they’ll pick-up your furniture for free, and of course put the proceeds to good use. Alternatively, “spruce it up with a lick of paint” as my old nan would say (who once forgot to tell my granddad she had just painted the outside loo seat). Her colourful, if not random style is now called ‘shabby chic’ – simply, you roughly paint that old tired-looking pine set of drawers using a wash instead of standard paint; try the range from Farrow and Ball, perfect for the popular distressed look - similar to the one on my granddad’s face. Ok, you could recycle at Villiers Rd but as new families to New Malden rip out what we had lovingly put back, and fashions change, you may just want to give your pre-loved furniture a second chance… VVoice

With lighter evenings on the way it is a good time to remind ourselves about general bike security. The temptation of an unsecured or inadequately secured pedal cycle is one few thieves can ignore. In our borough, in line with all other boroughs within

the Met, we have seen an increase in those thefts. An average of 43 bikes are stolen every week in Kingston and in New Malden alone in March we had reports of no fewer than xxx bikes stolen. Many of these were opportunist thefts and some involved children’s bikes. When stolen it is up to us to try to return the bikes to the owner and ensure a strong case to allow prosecution of the thief. I am sure that all would agree, however, that it would be better if the bikes were not stolen in the first place and there is a great deal that bike owners can do to keep their property secure. Wherever feasible, make sure it is attached to a fixed structure, preferably a designated bike rack. Invest in a good lock. Lock strengths can vary enormously and

you generally get what you pay for. Essentially any lock can be broken but having a lock will definitely deter opportunistic thieves and using more than one lock will make stealing your bike even harder. Gold rated locks give you maximum security but may be too heavy or expensive for the average user. Silver and bronze levels may be lighter and cheaper but should still deter the thief. When stolen, pedal bikes, especially top end versions, are moved on very quickly and difficult to trace unless the owner has taken some preventative steps by visiting one of our regular bike marking events. At these events we register details on line at www.bikeregister.com, the Metropolitan Police’s preferred cycle registration database. Independently owners can register their bike’s frame number and other details themselves by visiting the website. This means that when we find bikes we can match them against the database and, at the end of the case, return them to their owner. Bike thefts don’t just happen from the streets and are often taken from garden sheds so make sure you lock your shed. Remind your children not to throw their bikes down on the grass when playing in the park. Take a little time to attach them to the railings or, if possible, the bike racks. Often lone bikes are taken for joy rides and then just dumped elsewhere. Again, without registration, it is difficult for us to return them to their owner. All is not doom and gloom however. As a borough we have had considerable success in catching and prosecuting a number of bike thieves. But this is very much a case where prevention has to be better than the cure. You promise yourself that this time you definitely will not do it. But you do. You get sucked in. A little dabble wouldn’t hurt. Everyone else seems to be doing it, talking about. Then it’s too late you’re hooked and can no longer resist. Indeed if Oscar Wilde had been born a hundred years later then perhaps he would have been able to resist everything but rubbish TV. Whether it’s Strictly, The X Factor or Britain’s got Talent, you know that it’s rubbish, has no instrinsic value or life-affirming content but there’s something hypnotically addictive about it that means once you’ve watched you just can’t stop. Not only that but, with repeats on multiple channels, catch up TV and coverage on other media, these programmes get harder and harder to avoid. And what on earth would you talk to your colleagues about if it wasn’t last night’s episode of Possibly a New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar Strictly on Ice?Watching the Whole Day ThroughAccording to a report published in March by TV Licensing , Britons spends on average thirty one hours a week watching television. (Twenty eight hours on a traditional set plus with a further three hours on a laptop, phone or other smaller screen.) The mathematically minded among you will have worked out that for everyone shouting “but I haven’t got a TV; I watch nothing”, there is someone watching sixty two hours a week! Again doing the maths our average Brit spends 134 hours a month or 1,612 hours a year in front of the box.Trying to find lots of things not to doThat’s the equivalent of 201 eight hour work days. Now, the average reading speed is about two hundred words per minute and the typical novel about seventy five thousand to eighty thousand words long. So, a novel takes about six to seven hours to read. Giving up just half their TV watching in the next year, the average Brit could read an additional one hundred and fifteen novels. They might even finish War and Peace.Some of you may know that I’ve been writing a novel. What with work and home and stuff it never seems to

come along as quickly as I’d like so I have read a lot on writing, from planning and preparation to editing your final draft. Most writers say they can write about three pages per hour, I think that’s a bit optimistic. Let’s say it would take three hundred hours to prepare, plan

and write a novel. So, if the average Brit gave up half their TV watching, then they could finish nearly three books in a year. Can you imagine being an author of three books or multiple articles for Village Voice? And you’d still get to watch eight hundred hours of TV.Now where did I put the remote?
