New Malden’s Village Voice and Worcester Park Life


The last hurrah For twenty-six years Barton Green has been the home of the Green Theatre Company – New Malden’s only youth theatre group with its own premises. Until now, that is. Emma Sullivan explains... Tucked away in a converted cricket pavilion the theatre group has provided an opportunity for local youth and talent to flourish, put on regular entertainment for the local community and acted as a cultural centre. Primarily run by 14-25 year olds, the GTC has performed over 130 productions and given a launch pad for such renowned talent as David Walliams.Over the course of the Green’s

history, the company has been mainly self-funded, with otherwise minimal grant support. Sadly, with the expiry of the lease and the requirements that this brings, they

are in no position to maintain the fabric of the building and therefore renew that lease. The theatre has become known for performing comedy, tragedy, history, pantomime and one acters by playwrights as diverse as Edward Bond, Bertolt Brecht, Sarah Kane, Mike

Leigh, Edgar Allan Poe, William Shakespeare and Tom Stoppard to name but a few. The Green Theatre Company’s final production at Barton Green will be The Rainmaker, by N. Richard Nash. A classic American romance, The Rainmaker is a refreshingly heartfelt fable about a con man, a country girl, and the way that love can overcome cynicism in even the most tired of souls. On a drought-stricken ranch in America’s heartland, a charismatic trickster named Starbuck arrives selling the promise of rain. But when he and Lizzie, the lone daughter of the family, discover a genuine chemistry, they begin to consider the possibility of a real miracle. The play runs from Wednesday 14th - Saturday 17th March 2012. Tickets are only £6.00 and can be booked online at http://www.greentheatre.com. You can also book by phone on 07587 196378. Food Bank opens in New MaldenEvery day there are people in Kingston struggling to feed themselves or their families. They are not always the people you would expect. Some will be saying “I never thought this could happen to me”. Redundancy, loss of money and bank cards, delays in benefits payments or unexpected bills can all create a sudden food crisis. To meet these short-term needs a Kingston Food Bank was established in December and distribution points are being set up in churches around the Borough. The latest is at New Malden Baptist Church, at the junction of the Kingston Road and Westbury Road. It will be open every Thursday between 10.00am and 12.30pm. To use the Food Bank, people must have a special voucher issued by one of 50 front line agencies in the Borough. These include doctors’ surgeries, Citizens Advice Bureaux, Job Centre Plus, social services and schools. The voucher entitles users to three days’ worth of food for themselves and their dependents. “You might assume there is no poverty in this area but around 5,000 Kingston children are in poverty – that is 2-3 in every classroom in the Borough” says Paul Pickhaver of the Kingston Food Bank. “The average unsecured debt in this area is £24,000 compared with the National average of £16,000.” The Kingston Food Bank is one of 165 Food Banks around the country, linked to the Trussell Trust which set up the first Food Bank in Salisbury in 2000. A central storage depot for Kingston has been provided, free of charge, by Big Yellow Self and distribution points have been set up in churches in Kingston, Chessington and New Malden, each of which holds a supply of food to meet immediate needs. The voucher system means that users are not subjected to a long wait, endless form-filling or searching questions when they visit the Food Bank. The voucher indicates how many people need food in a family. Food Bank volunteers have a list of appropriate foods. Users can

relax and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in the church lounge while their food package is being put together. If they have food allergies or other special needs, adjustments can be made. The atmosphere is relaxed and

friendly - if they want to stay and chat they can do so while the Food Bank is open. The food is donated by individuals and local organisations. Waitrose is among organisations that have enthusiastically supported the project at their stores in Kingston, New Malden and Surbiton, allowing Food Bank volunteers to talk to shoppers and invite contributions. The response has been very positive from both staff and shoppers, says Paul

Pickhaver. Other supermarkets may well join the scheme in the near future. A series of collection points, where people can donate food, is also being set up around the Borough. Lists of appropriate items are available from the Food Bank. The food is generally non-perishables such as tinned food, cereals and other packeted food. It includes powdered or long-life (UHT) milk; tea or coffee; soups; tinned meat, fish, vegetables and fruit; pasta and instant mashed potato; biscuits and snack bars. “Use by” dates are carefully monitored so that no out of date food is distributed. In the first two months 260 food packs were distributed from the Kingston distribution point in the United Reformed Church, Kingston. New Malden Baptist Church moved back into its premises in the Kingston Road in September after an 18-month redevelopment programme. “We are excited by this scheme. I believe the opening of the Food Bank is part of God’s timing for this Church as we seek to be more involved in meeting the needs of the community” says the Pastor, Revd Johnny Pozzo. VVoice

When the lights went out by Robin Gill

They say you only remember the good times when you look back. The memories of the seventies for most people who witnessed them will include the various power blackouts we were subjected to. Hardly good times, but for a boy growing up who didn’t really understand the reasons for them, they could be quite exciting. Working to rule The first blackouts in December 1970, were as a result of the electricians “work to rule” in support of a pay increase of £5 a week. The ban on overtime, and work to rule, which started in the middle of the month, had an almost immediate effect on the power supply. By the Wednesday

of the week it was impossible to buy candles or anything that gave any heat or light. Many families were shivering around paraffin heaters at home, as schools closed, and workers were sent home early. Those who remained at work did so by candlelight or kerosene lamps.The random nature of the power cuts meant that on the streets of Malden, one side was dark while the other was lit. This made friends and neighbours of complete strangers, who would journey across the road in search of heat and light. A thick blanket of fog swept across Malden on that Wednesday causing numerous minor accidents at Shannon Corner where the traffic lights were out due to the cuts. Kingston Power Station had to be shut down the following Monday due to the build up of waste in the four main boilers. The ash had set hard, and had to be removed by high pressure hose. Serious accidents did occur; an elderly gentleman from Fritham Close was thrown from his kitchen into the hallway, when his camping cooker exploded as he was trying to attach a new canister of gas. Some of the gas leaked out onto his hands, and was ignited by a flame from his boiler. He received first and second degree burns to his face and hands. The effects of the dispute did have their brighter side (pardon the pun!). Many people remarked that the Rotary Club Christmas Tree frequently looked better when there was a power cut and the street lamps were out, as it was being driven around the district by Ted Clifford on his tractor. The electricians themselves could see that some of the effects of the work to rule were impractical such as having to journey to their call outs by public transport carrying all their equipment! The dispute was settled very quickly as the electricians agreed to arbitration and the public settled back into normal routine with a postal strike, and decimalisation on the horizon.


Strike OneOur next power cuts came in February 1972, following a shortage of coal, due to strike action by the miners. Due to mild weather, and conservation of existing stock, the cuts were put off for some time, but a reduction in voltage of around 5% had been put into effect. Kingston Power Station had 16,000 tons of coal, equivalent to about three weeks supply, and with picketing miners from the Midlands outside the gates, there was little chance any more supplies would be received. Lit advertising displays had been cut, and the shops in the High Street had had their window lights dimmed. Government permission was required for any floodlights to be used in sporting activities. Malden was due for its first cuts on the Sunday along with Surbiton and Chessington. Maps showing the affected areas together with dates and times of the cuts were displayed in the windows of the LEB shop at 178 High Street (now a greengrocer). The local hospitals which did not have their own generator were guaranteed power, and special arrangements were made for patients who relied on dialysis machines etc. Malden was listed as area E and the risk of cuts was quoted as medium (possible) and high (probable). So, for instance on Tuesday 22nd February the risk was high with cuts likely between 6am and 9am, 12 midday and 3pm, and 6pm to 9pm. Residents had to plan their lives accordingly. Local industries were affected in various ways. Decca had their own generators, whereas the production of the Hawker Harrier Jump Jet at Ham was reduced to half

normal capacity, and Gala Cosmetics on the bypass closed down altogether. A lot of social events were cancelled or rearranged, but the Malden and Coombe Evening Club For The Blind held a successful event at Pine Lodge in Blagdon Road, where they were entertained by blind accordionist Miss Denise O’Neale accompanied by her mother on the piano. The members were unaffected by the blackout, and took great delight in actually helping out their helpers!The cuts again cut out traffic lights causing jams all over the area, unless relieved by police officers on traffic duty, and this, coupled with no street lights, made driving more difficult. When you needed petrol (and it was available) the pumps of course were operated by electricity; so some garages got around this but attaching the pump mechanism to stationary cars wheels, which rotated when the engine was started, and provided the necessary power. Candle stocks were exhausted as residents worked and shopped by candlelight. Pubs with hand drawn pumps could still sell beers, but electric pumps stopped, making many a hardened drinker change his tipple, and had to enjoy it by a flickering candle. There was a beer shortage caused by transport problems but this was short lived, as was the sugar shortage and the milk shortage......Burglar alarms also keep going off, as residents forget to reset them, or forgot they were on altogether. At any one time 10% of the country was without power with the rotating power cuts. Of course, if you lived in one of the high rise blocks,

travelling in the lifts was out of the question. Many aged Malden residents who lived in multi-storey flats spent most of their time in their apartment not daring to venture out. Oxfam had to distribute emergency blankets for those without any heating.

Strike two Further blackouts took place in 1973 and 1974. In 1973, the Rotary Club Christmas Tree was adorned with tinsel, instead of the usual towering tree illuminated with coloured electric lights. It was inaugurated with great ceremony by the Mayor Councillor John Greenwood when it was unveiled outside the Methodist Church. Similarly, the annual mobile Father Christmas and sleigh which usually toured the Malden area was stationary to save petrol, and there were no horses available. It was positioned outside Safeway (now Co-operative) on Friday and Saturdays, and collection boxes were placed on shop counters in an attempt to raise the usual sum collected for old and needy people. People were encouraged to save energy, and the government implemented the three day week Temperatures were lowered in Kingston Hospital wards from 70F to 65F, and dentists were advised not to start drilling teeth with electric drills if a power cut was imminent. All trains were subject to cuts, and those

running were unheated and with restricted lighting. All adult education classes were cancelled, and a rota had to be worked out amongst the local hairdressers, so that if the power went out whilst a client was under a dryer, she could be taken to another salon where they had power. Another effect of the power cuts was that some street

lights were still on during daylight because the cuts had stopped the time switches working properly; when power was restored they started up again. Of course this also had the opposite effect, in that some lights switched themselves off at night even when there was no blackout. The miners agreed to arbitrate and take their demands to the Government Pay Board. Pending the result, they also returned to work. One residue of these power cuts is that most residents over the age of 60 will still have some of the candles they bought at the time somewhere in the house today.Hopefully, with less dependency on fossil fuels, the country will never be put in the same situation again, but the events of the 1970s did make you realise how much we took for granted, and how quickly life as we knew it could unravel.VVoice

ObituaryUrsula Lucie Sophie Hulme M.B.E.Ursula Hulme died on 14th January 2012 aged 94. She was born in Germany in 1917, and came to England as a refugee from Nazi oppression shortly before the start of the Second World War. She had studied textile design at the Riemann School in Berlin from 1935-1938, and became a freelance textile designer upon her arrival in this country.Later, she became a voluntary art therapist at the Middlesex Hospital, and this work grew, as she realised the value of creative art to physically disabled people. Her first patient was crippled with rheumatoid arthritis. After a meeting with the Head of Occupational Therapy for Surrey in 1960, she managed to find some premises at Pine Lodge in Blagdon Road New Malden where she started her classes. Originally, she taught in small groups, but the classes soon started to grow in number, as she took on people

who had suffered from Strokes, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and other disabilities, including sight loss. By 1962, further classes were being held in Redhill, Cheam, and Walton.In 1964 she was a founder member of the British Association of Art TherapistsShe founded Conquest Art as a charity in 1978. This organisation has some 150 members, who for the most part attend classes run by volunteer leaders and helpers trained in the methods developed by Mrs Hulme. Her simple philosophy was to “enrich the lives of physically disabled people by helping them to overcome the frustration of their disability”. The classes enable the

development of manual dexterity or other artistic skills, and give the participants a sense of comradeship, which their disability might otherwise preclude. The charity is based in Cox Lane West Ewell.Techniques employed are generally based on free expression and creative use of imagination requiring no prior manual skill: for example making a random doodle, and then seeing and working up images such as faces or other objects or patterns which emerge.

Following my comments about the missing financial infrastructure in the UK, I was recently comparing the US banking and financial structures with our own. Now, of course, their banking system has neither been angelic in its behaviour, nor unblemished in its history of probity. After all, in the wake of the 1929 stock market crash and during a nationwide commercial bank failure and the Great Depression, two members of Congress put their names on what is known today as the Glass Steagall Act. This act separated investment and commercial banking activities. At the time, ‘improper banking activity’ - considered to be overzealous commercial bank involvement in stock market investment - was deemed the main culprit of the financial crash - any of that seem familiar? In fact it stayed in place until being repealed in 1999

in order to liberate the banks to develop financially engineered products, which would diminish the risk in the entire system. We can probably lay the blame for this at the feet of Alan Greenspan, who told President Clinton that the banks had agreed that ‘they would act more responsibly’ - his words. Heavens, what would have happened if they had acted irresponsibly? However, it has not just been the major banks. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, there was the Savings and Loans scandal when the US equivalents of the UK building societies – “Thrifts” - went through a disastrous period following ludicrous lending by badly managed organisations when out of a total of 3234 Thrifts, around 750 went bust along with their customers’ savings, costing the Government some $88bn. Following this, many of these smaller operations were absorbed into larger financial organisations. However, just because banks are large and strong, doesn’t necessarily mean they are good - as recent events have so perfectly illustrated. In the US, what they refer to as ‘Community banks’ can include a range of savings and loans companies and mutuals, but all focused on providing local services to local residents and especially local businesses. There are at present over 7000 of them in the US which on a per capita basis, would mean that we should have an equivalent number of 1350 such banks in the UK. Although we have a range of some 47 building societies and a number of smaller mutual loans companies, we

actually have a relatively small number of banks in the UK designed to serve domestic customers (I exclude all those City of London based offices of overseas banks). More recently we have seen some new entrants in the form of Virgin and Metro, and of course we should not ignore the growing presence of the supermarkets in this area. However, what we have not had is a presence of local banks for local funding. Most of the financial services from the building societies and savings companies, as well as the supermarkets, are all aimed at the private consumer and not for the small business. This is a key area which is missing. Now, we could wait for free enterprise to set up such services, or wait for the existing players to expand into this area, but I fear that time is not going to be of any help here. If there was a position for regional investment facilities to be provided then surely this is it? Rather than being funded out of Government debt, let alone the deficit, far better it be funded by way of guarantee or Government tax incentivised investment fund. Some imagination needed here and some courage not just to take action but to be seen to be taking action to counter the negative waves of news washing over us from most outlets. The entrepreneurial spirit is there but it desperately needs the fuel to fire it up, especially as so many are leaving state employment and need to be triggered into having the confidence of ‘doing it for themselves’. New Malden PeopleForteen year old Scarlett Ketteman lives in New Malden and is a pupil at Coombe Girls School.A few months ago I decided to enter Kingston Young Performer of the Year 2011 after being told about it by Georgia Bell, a member of Kingston Youth Parliament. I knew straight away that this was for me so I entered and was lucky enough to win 2nd place. Following this I was asked by the co-ordinators of the competition to perform as the entertainment at a local Duke of Edinburgh prize giving in front of a large number of people. The Deputy Mayor of Kingston was there to witness this and then asked me if I would be interested in performing on Kingston Hospital Radio. I contacted the radio and was able to organise two occasions where I sang and played my guitar on the radio, explaining a bit about myself. Then in January

of this year I decided, after a lot of thought, to enter Live and Unsigned, a national competition for unsigned talent in the United Kingdom. I auditioned on January 29th and had to travel to a theatre in Hayes, Middlesex. When I arrived I had to register and then wait for my

name to be called. When it was, I entered a small room where I performed my song to a panel of judges. After this I had to wait a while for the result. I then found out that I had made it through the audition. I was very fortunate because a very small number of applicants made it

through. The next stage of the competition is the Regional Finals where the acts that made it through will perform an original song and a cover to a large audience. If I do manage to get through this stage I will have the opportunity to play and sing at the O2 in July 2012. As part of the next stage of the competition it is a requirement to gain as much publicity as I can in my local area. I have written a song in preparation and I am very excited at the prospect of performing it at the Regional Finals on 11th March. VVoice

This is a great way to jazz up salmon – with a Japanese teriyaki sauce glaze served with sesame flavoured noodles. Soak the wooden skewers in water for 30 minutes before threading on the strips of salmon to prevent them from burning under the hot grill.

Slice each salmon fillet widthways into 2 strips and place the strips in a shallow dish. Mix together the teriyaki sauce and garlic and pour over the salmon. Cover and leave to marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes.Preheat the grill to medium. Thread the strips of salmon onto 8 wooden skewers. Grill the salmon skewers for

3-4 minutes on each side until just cooked through.Meanwhile, cook the noodles according to the packet instructions. Drain well. Heat the sesame oil in a wok or large non-stick frying pan and add the ginger, spring onions, radishes and sesame seeds. Stir fry for 2-3 minutes then Add the noodles and toss well to mix. Just before serving, brush the salmon skewers with the warmed honey and grill for a further minutes. Divide the sesame noodles between four serving bowls and top with the salmon skewersVVoice

Roland Head @ The Real ButchersLocal butcher Roland Head was born in Sutton and spent most of his life there up until 1982 when he brought the shop in New Malden with his wife Anne and 2 young sons. When did you set up your shop and why?We set up the butchers shop in 1982 because I had managed and made a success of other peoples businesses and wanted to do it for myself.What do you love about it?I just love helping people get the best meal possible and them coming back with a smile because we had done a great job for them.What is your favourite local shop? Why?My favourite local shop has to be ADORN the jewellers on the High Street because David made my wife a lovely new wedding ring.What is great about New Malden and what would you change?I love the village atmosphere that you get from New Malden and it also has such a vast contrasting cultures which make for a good variety of shops. The thing I would change is the layout of the high street. The person who ok’d the plans should look at themselves with shame.What is your all time favourite song? In this occasional feature, Margaret Freeman (nee Treble) who lived in New Malden and went to Burlington School shares some memories. “I have always felt a second-class citizen because I was female, as there were so many things I wasn’t supposed to do, like climbing over gates, as I tore my dresses – there were never the sensible jeans for girls in those days – and one had to look like a ‘dainty little girl’, as an aunt of mine once said. I was never one of those, my two cousins Chum and Dave always saw to that, and

Malden memories I returned home torn or soaking, whichever activity we’d been following, climbing, or fishing, of just sitting by the stream. We used to play across the road from where I lived [in New Malden, Surrey] which was a small road but has now become the Kingston by-pass. Several friends played there too, where we had feasts of berries etc, which was brought to a swift end when

one of our number ate deadly nightshade berries, and had to be rushed to hospital for a stomach pump.” “My parents were very poor and my father, [pictured above], only earned £3.10 a week. My mother never worked but we had good plain food – no bought cakes unless my aunt and cousins were coming to tea and then we had five jam doughnuts, one for each of us, bought at

Rowlands at the top of Queens Road, Malden, where we lived. I attended Burlington Road school, taken there at first by my elder cousin Chum with Dave attached, and we crossed the road together. We went there for some years with two other second cousins, Roy and Alan Treble, and earned the reputation of the Terrible Trebles

– not very amusing, but the teachers really thought it hilarious. It was at this school that I first met Mrs King*. who taught us singing – my cousin frequently being asked to stop singing as he was flat – and she could also be seen running up and down in the playground taking us for netball, where I was shooter, as I was then tall for my age, but seemed to stop later. When my cousin Chum left the school and came to say goodbye to our teacher Mr Grant, he said: “There goes the brains of the family. I’ll have to see what I can do with what’s left.” I never forgave him, and I’m not sure if Dave did either as we were in the same class. After another couple of years we separated and he went to Beverley Boys and I to the senior girls’ school in the same playground. It was there that I learned cookery and housewifery and laundry, not liking the last two, but enjoying cookery, and on one occasion after we had moved to Tolworth I carried an Irish stew in a jug up the hill from Berrylands [station], swinging along gaily until I realised what a mess my gymslip was. My poor mother, she was forever making do and patching my things, as I never really cared too much what I looked like. Growing your own peppers is not much more involved than growing tomatoes, so why not give it a try? Pepper plants can be unbelievably pretty too, with fruits in a range of shapes and colour, generally on compact plants and preceded by small and very pretty white flowers. This is a plant with great ornamental as well as edible potential.

Both chilli and sweet - or bell - peppers can be grown in a greenhouse border, in a sunny spot in the garden in warmer parts of the country, or on a sunny, sheltered spot on the patio. The heavier, earlier crop will come if you grow the plants in a greenhouse or conservatory, but it is well worth growing them outside too.Sweet peppers, especially the red ones, are very high in vitamin A and both red and green peppers are also very high in vitamin C. Chilli peppers also have a good supply of vitamins C and A and in addition, contain both beta-carotene and something called capsaicin which is believed to have a useful effect on blood cholesterol levels. The seeds are readily obtainable from many catalogues or garden centres but make sure you take into account the level of heat that each type delivers. Most seed packets and catalogues do make it very clear.Sow the seeds between now and early April. I use a multi-purpose or a seed compost, but for good germination you will need to provide a bit of extra warmth, ideally from a heated propagator positioned in a spot where it receives plenty of natural light. If you don’t have the time or facilities to raise your own from seed, you can always buy a few plants in a garden centre or send off for them. We offer two tasty varieties as part of my ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system (see www.pippagreenwood.com for details).Keep the plants a tiny bit drier than you would a tomato plant and feed regularly with a high-potash liquid feed (most readily available as a ‘tomato food’). This helps to keep the plants growing strongly and the potash will encourage plenty of flowers and so fruits to form. If you are going for plants in pots, choose a planter that has good drainage and is 30cm (12in) or more in diameter, adding broken pots for extra drainage. Once

there is no danger of late frosts you can put them outside in a sheltered, sunny spot.If you’re after the hottest possible heat from your chilli peppers, then you’ll find this comes from fruits that are totally ripe and from peppers that are grown in warmer conditions. If you are growing sweet peppers in patio pots then you are likely to find that there are still some unripened fruits on the plants when temperatures start to fall at the end of summer and well into autumn. To increase the chances of these ripening and increasing to full size, move the pots to a warmer spot or, if possible, to a porch, conservatory or greenhouse where they’ll get extra warmth and also plenty of natural light.If you want chillies that look particularly good on the patio there are plenty to choose from. ‘Black Pearl’ is a hot chilli pepper with a distinct blackish tinge to the mature leaves and fruits that are black early on and mature darkest red. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring -it was peace.” - Milan KunderaIt’s a Dog’s Life You may not agree with Milan Kundera, author of The Unbearable Lightness of Being, but there are many good reasons for owning a dog: Firstly, it’s good for your health. According to a report on the BBC News website, dog owners tended in general to be healthier than the average member of the population. Dr Deborah Wells, psychologist from Queen’s University, Belfast reviewed dozens of research papers which looked at the health benefits of pet ownership. She says that dog owners tended to have lower blood pressure and cholesterol. There was also the suggestion that dogs could aid recovery from serious illnesses such as heart attacks, and act as ‘early warning’ to detect an approaching epileptic seizure.

Puppy Power If that wasn’t enough, according to research conducted by Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, having a dog could increase your chances of finding a love match. Of seven hundred respondents to a recent survey, sixty percent said that owning a dog can make people more attractive, while eighty-five percent think people are more approachable with a hound at their heels. We all know it’s tough starting a conversation with someone new, but owning a dog can ease the awkwardness. In fact nearly all of those surveyed (over 95%) said they would feel more comfortable speaking to someone they didn’t know, if they had a dog. According to the research the best canine conversation starter is cute puppy - this is backed up by my own experience:

There’s no such thing as the Dog Poo Fairy!*However, there is one thing that really annoys me about having a dog - other people’s dog’s poo left lying around. It annoyed me before we had a dog, now it really annoys me. Surely, one of the questions you consider when thinking getting a dog is can I scoop? Is it the nicest part about owning a dog? No, but it is an essential one. If you can’t scoop the poop then don’t get a dog! In every pocket in every item of clothing I own is a stash of small plastic bags. So, not only do I scoop but I rustle as I do it!

The Golden Ticket Poop BagTaiwan’s New Taipei City has come up with a novel way of solving the all-too-common problem by encouraging dog owners to pick up their pet’s droppings and hand them into the appropriate authorities in exchange for a lottery ticket. If you’re in possession of a lottery ticket, you’re in with

a chance of winning the top prize: a gold ingot worth $2,200 (£1,400).

If fining people, like we do in the UK doesn’t work, perhaps we should start a lottery?
