What more are we doing to keep everyone safe?

• Administrators and School Resource Officers participated in the

first of many safety training sessions.

• Last week, our administrators were given a preview of the Active

Threat Training that will be taking place at Hickory High School in

August of 2019.

• Last week many from our division attended the 2018 School

Safety Training Forum hosted by the Department of Criminal

Justice.

• We are currently in the process of hiring a Safety Supervisor.

This persons’ sole job responsibility will center around school

safety.

What has the School Safety Taskforce been doing

to keep our students safe?

First we looked at what we are already doing:

• AEDs – All school buildings have at least two AEDs located throughout each facility

• After School events – Administrators at any CPS school may request police officers through the Office of Student Activities

• Bus Safety All buses are equipped with cameras and audio as

well as a GPS tracking system Evacuation drills are practiced twice a year, the first

happening the first 30 days of school

Page 31: New Jersey Department of Education - Office of …...Chesapeake Public Schools safety plans to ensure that they are suitable for any emergency situation that might occur on a Chesapeake

New Jersey Department of Education - Office of School Preparedness & Emergency PlanningNew Jersey Department of Education - Office of School Preparedness & Emergency Planning

• All visitors must provide identification and utilize the Visitor Information System called Raptor.

• Safe Schools and Crisis Management Plans must be updated and reviewed every year

• Safety Inspections are held regularly to detect and eliminate safety hazards

• School Resource Officers are full-time in all high schools and 6 of our middle schools (in their 2018-19 Budget the City has budgeted to add 4 more SROs once they completed training

Page 32: New Jersey Department of Education - Office of …...Chesapeake Public Schools safety plans to ensure that they are suitable for any emergency situation that might occur on a Chesapeake

• All staff are required to wear Identification Badges, including substitutes.

• The Student of Code of Conduct handbook is provided to every student the first day of school.

• Threat Assessments are conducted by a Threat Assessment Team consisting of five members: Administration, teacher, school counselor, and an SRO.

• There are security cameras strategically placed throughout each school building.

• The Police Department and the Department of Student Services meet quarterly to exchange information and discuss safety, these meetings are planned to continue

Page 33: New Jersey Department of Education - Office of …...Chesapeake Public Schools safety plans to ensure that they are suitable for any emergency situation that might occur on a Chesapeake

The next area we looked at were what other types of safety measures were needed in our

school buildings.

Through the Taskforce’s work, two overarching areas of safety emerged:

1. Infrastructure

2. Procedures
