Airbus’ 8,000th aircraft, delivered last week to Air Asia in Indonesai Airbus

Airbus had a busy month, recording orders for 174 new aircraft and delivering 52. New business was led by British low-cost air-line easyjet’s firm order for 135 A320 family aircraft, including 100 A320neos and 35 A320ceos - confirming the carrier’s posi-tion as the largest operator of A320 jets in Europe. Airbus also took orders for A320 family aircraft from two key leasing com-panies: ILFC purchased 15 A321ceos while CIT booked a total of eight new narrowbodies. nance facilities, engineering services and component supply chains are smoothly functionning before the new aircraft types enter the market”.

Sadauskas urged operators and manu-facturers of new models with similar parts to create joint stocks or joint sup-ply networks “in order to minimize the number of issues concerning the inevi-table MRO service of their aircraft. The decisions that have to be made are as important to industrial giants like Boe-ing with its Dreamliner as they are to the newcomers whose aircraft are merely in the development stage.”

“The key factor here is the ability to co-operate while integrating the new prod-uct into the global market and making it less dependent on purely local factors and capabilities. Of course, like in any other market, the adequate develop-ment of the necessary service networks will probably follow the gradual inte-gration of the aircraft into the market if the demand for certain models is strong enough. But at least some of the neces-sary steps have to be taken in advance.”

Fokker Aerostructures signed an important contract with Airbus for the development and manufacturing of the Outboard Flap for the A350-1000, the largest variant of the A350 XWB family of aircraft. Outboard flaps increase the surface-area as well as the camber of the wing during take-off and landing. The design of the A350-1000 com-posite flap has been customized because of the new wing design of this variant and because of the enlarged fuselage. Develop-ment activities have already started in close collaboration with Airbus in Bremen, where a team of Fokker engineers is co-located on-site with the Airbus team. First hardware deliveries are scheduled for 2015. The new contract means employment for 50 highly qualified specialists at Fokker. TAP Maintenance and Engineering Brazil receives EASA certification for E-Jets family

In 2010, TAP Maintenance and Engineering Brazil earned the certificate of an Embraer Authorized Service Center (EASC) in Brazil, becoming the only aircraft maintenance company in Latin America certified for all service levels on all commercial aircrafts manufactured by Embraer, as regulated by ANAC and FAA. Now, TAP M&E Brazil, which already holds numerous certifications to perform aircraft heavy checks of the main manufacturers, has received certification from EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) for all maintenance lev-els on all E-Jets models manufactured by Em-braer. Consequently, this will significantly increase the possibil-ity of performing more services, especially for European operators. TAP M&E Brazil’s indus-trial complex consists of two Maintenance Cent-ers—one in Rio de Janeiro (GIG) and the other in Porto Alegre (POA)—where, besides aircraft services, it offers several capabilities for engines, landing gear and aircraft components together with certificates from aviation authorities such as ANAC, FAA, EASA, TCCA, DGAC and others.

Willis Lease Finance earns $9.7m in second quarter

Willis Lease Finance Corporation (WLFC) reported earnings of $9.7m in the second quarter ended June 30, 2013, compared to $1.6m in the preceding quarter and $2.4m in the second quarter a year ago. For the first six months of 2013, net income at-tributable to common shareholders was $11.3m compared to $5.0 million in the first six months of 2012. Lease portfolio in-creased 4.7% to $1.02bn from $0.97bn a year ago, largely due to the purchase-lease-back transaction with Scandinavian Airlines that was completed in the first quarter of 2013. Total revenues grew 8.0% to $38.0m from $35.2m a year ago, reflecting portfolio growth and increased maintenance reserve revenues. Lease rent revenues increased 3.9% to $24.8m compared to $23.8m a year ago. Maintenance reserve revenues increased 24.9% to $11.8m compared to $9.4m a year ago.

Aircastle posts second quarter 2013 net income of $32.9m

Aircastle released that lease rental and fi-nance lease revenues for the second quarter were $162.0m, up $7.5m or 5% year over year, due primarily to the impact of aircraft acquisitions of $26.1m, partially offset by lower revenues due to aircraft dispositions of $9.5m and from the effect of lease ex-

ance of the sales increase. Net income for the quarter decreased 15.2% to $76.7m com-pared with $90.4m in the comparable quarter a year ago. EBITDA for the quarter decreased 5.3% to $192.8m from $203.5m for the com-parable quarter a year ago. Virgin America reports second quar-ter 2013 financial results

Virgin America reported its financial results for the second quarter of 2013 with operating income of $27.9m and net income of $8.8m (compared to a year-ago loss of $31.8m, an improvement of more than $40m), on total revenue of $376m for the three months end-ing June 30. The airline posted an 8.6 point improvement in operating margin for the sec-ond quarter, driven largely by a 7.8% growth in revenue per available seat mile (“RASM”) over the year-earlier period.

tensions, transitions and terminations of $9.1m. Total revenues for the second quar-ter were $170.4m, a decrease of $1.8m, or 1% versus the previous year. This was pri-marily due to the amortization of lease pre-miums, discounts and lease incentives being $10.8m higher in 2013. In the second quar-ter of 2012, lease incentive amortization was driven lower by lease incentive revers-als resulting from early lease terminations. This revenue decrease was partially offset by $7.5m of higher lease rental and finance lease revenue, and $1.8m of higher other revenues, primarily early lease termination fees relating to an aircraft that transitioned during the quarter. Adjusted EBITDA for the second quarter was $183.4m, up $26.3m or 17% from the second quarter of 2012. Net income for the second quarter was $32.9m, up $16.5m, or 101%. The increase was pri-marily due to higher gains from the sale of aircraft of $18.5m and lower aircraft impair-ment charges of $10.1m.

MAINtag, a leading provider of aerospace flyable RFID tags, readers, software and in-tegration services, launched FLYcheck, a 3D iPad-based assets management solution for inventory and maintenance of cabin passen-ger and security equipment. The FLYcheck in-terface delivers a realistic three-dimensional view of an aircraft’s interior cabin, and pro-vides data, graphics and animation for mul-tiple viewing angles. “The FLYcheck solution complies with ATA Spec 2000, and provides status to see which parts are approved or reported, or if a part is missing or expired, along with other useful data. At the same time, FLYcheck may reduce inventory check time by as much as 90%. The accuracy of the system reduces risk of errors compared to existing methods of cabin safety equip-ment checks that may be outdated or unin-tuitive,” said Bruno Lo-Re, president and CEO of MAINtag in Paris, France.
