Today I took the time to burn the palms that were waved in celebration by our children on Palm Sunday in 2019. As the children waved the palms, the congregation rejoiced at the arrival of the messianic king. Hosanna, hosanna You are the God who saves us, worthy of all our praises Hosanna, hosanna Come have your way among us We welcome You here, Lord Jesus.

This day is Shrove Tuesday and I ate pancakes, waffles, eggs, and sausage prepared by the Men of Hope. It was delicious! Shrove, which is the past tense of shrive, means to obtain absolution for one’s sins, ordinarily achieved through confession. The pancake feast helps to use up the fatty foods before the Lenten fast. We ate up the eggs, butter, and sausage!

Tomorrow evening we will gather for our Ash Wednesday service. Fred Craddock wrote that “Ash Wednesday is a day of penitence marking the beginning of Lent, a journey of 40 days to Good Friday and Easter. Ash Wednesday is a time of recalling our mortality (“ashes to ashes”), repenting of wrongs, and preparing for death and resurrection, both of Christ and of ourselves.”

Those burned palms have turned into ashes that will be mixed with anointing oil and used to make ashen crosses on the foreheads of worshippers. The ashen cross is a reminder of our mortality and a way of showing sorrow for our sin. Ashes were an outward and visible sign of confession in Israel. Lucy Hogan says that “Nehemiah and the people of Israel fasted, dressed in sackcloth, and put earth on their heads as they sought to atone for their sins before God.”

Tomorrow night I will use Sunday’s palms to place an ashen cross on foreheads of young and old. I will repeat the same words again and again, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

Lent is not a time of celebration, but a season of penitence and repentance. The use of the word, “Alleluia”, is suspended during Lent. Alleluia offers praise to God, but it is a word of joy and celebration. We will restore this word to our worship after Easter and use it a great deal from Easter to Pentecost. Lent is a time of penitence, the action of feeling or showing sorrow and regret for having done wrong.

Lent is a season to sing the words written by Rae Whitney:

Sunday’s palms are Wednesday’s ashes as another Lent begins;

Thus, we kneel before our Maker in contrition for our sins.

We have marred baptismal pledges, in rebellion gone astray;

Now, returning, seek forgiveness; grant us pardon, God this day!

Project Transformation

by Luisa Medina

Putnam City UMC has asked New Hope to come alongside them this summer as they host Project Transformation. This will be an eight-week event happening Mondays through Thursdays, June 1st-July 23rd.

This camp is for children in first through fifth grade. They are asking for volunteers who would be willing to read with the children each of those days, from 9 a.m.- noon. There will be a sign-up sheet for volunteers beginning in April.

Also, because they are a new site they will need books for the children to use while they are there. Most of the children get connected with this program because they are struggling with reading or simply trying to maintain grade level reading through the summer.

In April we will host a book drive for them! We will need new or VERY gently used children’s books of all reading levels up through 5th grade. We will collect those the entire month.

Second Saturday Sandwich Outreach to the Homeless by Tammy Darter

Second Saturday continues to be a blessing and success thanks to the generosity of New Hope!

Every month we are amazed and thankful that we are able to pro-vide for those less fortunate than ourselves. We would like to en-courage each of you to join us. If you can’t go downtown, come and help us make PBJ’s or sort clothes. There is always room for

more ‘helpers’!! God is good all the time, all the time God is good. We go again March 14th!

I have put together some information about suicide prevention resources.

Though the causes are many, the most common cause of suicide is

hopelessness. If you or someone you know is struggling with a situation in that is perceived as hopeless, please know there is help available. Below is a list of resources available at little or no cost. These resources are for ANYONE – regardless of age, income status, cultural, racial or ethnic group. If you are unsure if any of the listed resources can help you, call the church office. The list below does not represent all the resources available in the OKC area. Church staff or the Faith Community Nurse can put you in touch with a resource that will meet your specific need. You are not alone. There is hope.

If you or someone you know are in crisis call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. They are available 24/7.

Cali’s Corner by Rev. Cali Eck

My heart is full and I am truly blessed! This past month my family has been showered with much love from our church family. We have received food, phone calls, special visits, and cards letting us know we are in your prayers. It is a blessing to serve at New Hope with you. Thank you! I am still healing and will try to move slowly so that healing will not have any setbacks but I look forward to getting back to work.

As we began our journey through Lent together I am reminded that the early church would tell one another to observe a “holy Lent”. It was a reminder that Lent was not about them, it was about deepening their relationship with Christ. It still is today. We can tend to get caught up in what we give up or take on sometimes.

I encourage you to observe a Holy Lent. Take time to deepen your relationship with God. If something has gotten in the way of the relation-ship give it to God, if adding something will help your relationship then do that. We have Lenten materials and Upper Room devotionals that are available for you. We also have a Lenten class offered on Wednesday evenings through Lent. I hope you will seek God’s guidance and strength as you journey through Lent.

Blessings, Pastor Cali

UMW by Earline Baker

Greetings to New Hope women. We made it through the challenges of Febru-ary, frigid temperatures, deep snow, and rain, but grateful of a few mild days. Many of us enjoyed the delightful Valentine's Day dinner hosted by Men of

Hope --- sincere thanks to them!

Elaine Parrent and Carola Smith, co-presidents, attended Crossroads UMW Winter Worship at Ed-mond First United Methodist Church on February 15tth. They participated in assembling hygiene kits with supplies provided by district UMW units. These kits will be used for the Ice Angels homeless ministry. They also enjoyed a presentation by the Ice Angels ministry.

All New Hope ladies and friends are invited to join us at our United Methodist Women meeting on March 19th at 6:30 p.m. at the Church. Elaine Parrent, co-president, will lead us in a program on “A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial.” This an oppor-tunity for women to reflect on the gospel of Christ and make an offering that helps sustain ministry around the country and the world. Every year, UMW members participate in A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial observance. In response to God’s love and grace, offerings collected through A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial support worthy initiatives that relate to each year’s mission focus.

The mission focus for 2020 is "We Rise: Meeting God's Call to Transform Communities," supporting the work of United Methodist Women-supported national mission institutions, international partners and regional missionaries.

Women, children and youth across the world have felt the love of God through A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial funds that have been given by countless women gathered in circles of care. As United Methodist Women members, we bow to meet God in prayer and then rise to give of ourselves that God's vision of an abundant and beloved community for all can be realized.

Mary Martha Circle by Donna Reynolds

As sure as we have winter, we surely will have Spring. It's on it's way! Daffodil and tulip leaves are pushing up out of the ground and the buds on the Bradford Pear trees are fat. It's a time for Hope and Happiness! The Mary Martha Ladies Circle at New Hope were so happy there were several visitors joining them for their meeting in February. We meet on the second Thursday of each month at 9:30 at New Hope for brunch, devotional, prayer, and fellowship while planning their ministries for helping others.

The Annual Mary Martha Ham Dinner is planned for Sunday, March 8 at New Hope. This is a fund-raiser by donations. Plan on staying for lunch that day after worship for scrumptious ham, potato casseroles, green beans, baked beans, coleslaw, salads, and the best desserts ever. And the fellowship is great, too. Join your favorite people at a table or try sitting with people you don't know as well to grow your circle of friends. I hope to see you there.

Men of Hope Going Strong

by Gary Graham

The Men of Hope held two events at church this past month. The first was our church-wide dinner held in the Valentine season. It is our men’s way of showing appreciating to the church and to our wives for their support throughout the year. Over 140 people attended the event. Our scout troop 599 blessed us by serving our meals and waiting on tables. Their participation was a community service event for our troop, but it was a delightful experience for the members of the church. The troop is truly a blessing for our church.

February 25 was Shrove Tuesday, also known as Fat Tuesday, and is one of our men’s two fund-raising events for the year. It was well-attended by our congregations and members of the community and everyone enjoyed pancakes, waffles, sausage, milk, orange juice or coffee.

The men wish to thank Jose Medina and his family. José is a true chef. Dinner was fresh and delicious. José, Leola, Teresa, Lois and Leah worked Wednes-day, Thursday and Friday helping our men’s group with table set-up, flower decorations, and they worked tirelessly to replace Kelly in the kitchen helping with preparation and cleanup. We have a family who will jump in and help make events in our church successful when someone is ill. Thanks to all the men who conducted set-up and tear-down of the tables in the Narthex, and who helped clean up, and to José for a delicious dinner. Thanks to Gregg Miller for entertainment. Thanks to Kevin, Emily and Tyler for music and solos. Thanks also to our scout troop and their willingness to serve us and bless us with their presence. Everyone made this a tremendously successful event.

YOUTH PARENTS by Matt Miller

Mark your calendars for our first parent meeting of 2020! It will be Sunday, March 1st at noon (directly following 2nd service). We will be going over the calendar for the next several months, including summer activities. We have a full spring and summer planned and this meeting will ensure that you have all of the correct information to begin registering. Also, we will be sending around the meal sign up for Sunday night meals through August.

by Gary Graham

Thank you, Congregation, for making the Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner a huge success!

Men of Hope really appreciate the support for our projects which include a scholarship for a graduating senior. We also help with Exodus House and have various projects come up during the year.

All men and their sons are invited to our 8:15 breakfast meetings the third Sunday of each month. The next will be March 15.

Yellow slips will be in chair backs the first three Sundays of March to order Easter lilies for the sanctuary. Please indicate if these are in memory or in honor of someone (circle one) so we don’t have to phone you. Clear printing helps ensure the names are spelled correctly on Easter morning. These plants do well when planted in yards here. If you pur-chase one, please plan to take it home with you or else tell a friend to take it. It’s a shame when many are thrown away because no one claims them. Thank you!

This year’s Easter Egg hunt in April will combine the regular hunt with the beeping egg hunt for visually-impaired children. Luisa will gladly take contributions of individually-wrapped candies, large plastic eggs and small trinkets that would fit in eggs. There will be a collection place in the gathering area beginning March 15.
