Registration

Registration can be completed only electronically through each child’s Family

Access Account beginning April 18th.

If you need help with access to a computer and your Family Access Account, please contact the elementary office. We will arrange a time for you to come to school, use our computers to

log into your account, and register your child(ren) for summer school classes.

Payment will be collected AFTER registration closes. Invoices will be sent to families. Please do NOT pay at time of

registration. ALL fees must be paid prior to attending class.

Summer School General Information

1

Registration 1. Register by the grade level your child is currently in. 2. Classes are filled on a first­come basis. 3. Fees must be paid before attending classes. 4. Fees are determined by the cost of materials per student, per class. 5. If your child qualifies for the free or reduced lunch program, your fees will be waived.

Attendance: 1. Students are expected to attend all classes. Please notify teacher of any pre­planned absences. Dress and Conduct: 1. Students should dress comfortably, according to the weather and their class selections. 2. Summer school is meant to be a pleasant experience for students and staff. A child may be sent home for misconduct. Refunds will not be issued. Guests: 1. Please do not arrange for your child to bring guests to summer school. This presents problems in regards to materials, teacher attention, and daily lesson plans. Transportation: NEW THIS YEAR! 1. The school district WILL provide transportation for summer school this year. Bus services will be available before school starts at 8:00 and after the typical morning session is over at 11:45 for Session I (June 20­30) and Session II (July 18­August 11). Transportation will be provided to hazardous zones stops (north of Hwy. 39 and east of Hwy. 69) within the village and to rural addresses. The stops with in the village will be the police station/village park, Heidi Court, and Valle Tell areas. Please fill out the form at the following link if you need transportation services: Summer School Transportation. The link will be live starting April 18th. Refund Policy 1. Refunds will automatically go into your child’s lunch account. We realize that some children might not have lunch accounts; therefore a check refund will be issued. No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations less than 7 days before the start of the class, unless the cancellation is due to a medical or family emergency. All refunds will be processed after the summer school sessions end in August. Picking­Up and Dropping­Off Students: 1. Students who are dropped off and/or picked up for school should do so in the same manner as the regular school year. 2. Students who walk to summer school should use the same crosswalks as the regular school year. Keep in mind that crossing guards are not present during summer school. Fees: 1. Fees will vary according to classes and are based on the cost of materials for each class. 2. Scholarship funds are available for students who qualify for free/reduced lunch during the school year. Session I – June 20­30

Session I Period 1 ­ 8:00­9:15 Title: American Red Cross Babysitting Course REDCR1 Grades: Must be age 11 by end of summer school Time: 8:00­9:15 Fee: $30 Teacher: Mrs. Statz Location: ES 125 Class Description: The purpose of the American Red Cross Babysitting Training course is to provide youth ages 11 and older with the information and skills necessary to provide safe and responsible care for children in the absence of parents or guardians. This training will help participants develop skills in leadership and professionalism, basic care, safety and safe play, and First Aid. Students will be receiving a Red Cross Babysitting soft­covered book, a first­aid kit, and a certificate from the American Red Cross. A Babysitting party with young children will also take place. Title: Beading BEAD1 (enrollment limit 16) Grades: 4­8 Time: 8:00­9:15 Fee: $10 Teacher: Ms. Douty Location: ES #48 (Guidance room) Class Description: Learn to follow a pattern and step­by­step instructions to create beautiful works of art. You can choose you own beads and colors to make your piece express your individual style. Create jewelry, hanging pendants, and more! Title: Cyberlearning Club CYBER1 Grades: 3­8 Time: 8:00­9:15 Fee: $0 Teacher: Mrs. Thurow Location: ES Computer Lab Class Description: Do you enjoy playing video games? Are you ready to learn computer programming? Using the app Scratch (developed at MIT), you will learn to make your own video games. In a friendly, collaborative environment, you discuss and critique each other’s work. You will work together to troubleshoot design and coding problems. This class is open to those

who have been participating in the Friday club during the school year as well as new participants. Title: Drama for Kids DRFK1 Grades: 1­5 Time: 8:00­9:15 Fee: $15 Teacher: Mrs. Arnett/Ms. Lederman Location: ES 113 Class Description: In this class, you will help to put on a production of a play. We are looking for kids who are interested in art to help with set design, kids who like to create costumes, and of course we need kids who want to perform on stage! We will wrap up our class by performing our production on the last day of summer school. Title: Fun Sports and Games FSAG1 Grades: K­3 Time: 8:00­9:15 Fee: $5 Teacher: Mrs. Sigafus Location: ES GYM Class Description: If Phy Ed is one of your favorite classes, you will want to sign up for “Fun Sports and Games”. Choose your favorite activity and we will try to play it. Indoor activities may include Jolly Ball, Scatter Ball, Castle Ball, Relay Races, Basketball, Shoe Pile, Steal the Bacon & more. On super nice days, we will be outside playing exciting sports and games like Kickball, Flag Football, Lightning, Crab Soccer, Red Light Green Light, Three Legged Races, Frisbee & Baskets, Drip Drip Drop, Barnyard, Tennis Baseball and more. We will even take a trip to Swiss Lanes and end our with a Minute To Win It Marathon. Title: Got Net? Time: 8:00­9:15 GNET1 Grades: 7­8 Fee: $0 Teacher: Location: MPR Class Description: Is Volleyball your game? Whether or not you participated in Middle School Volleyball…here’s your chance to learn, refine, and polish your ball handling skills. Our goal will be to learn and improve ball handling techniques, work on game strategy and scoring. Skills will be applied in match play. Take advantage of some “net time” before it’s “Knight time”! Athletes should wear comfortable shorts, t­shirts, tennis shoes. Knee pads are encouraged. Title: Hangin’ with My Chromies HWMC1 Grades: 3­6 (limit 15) Time: 8:00­9:15 Fee: $0 Teacher: Mrs. Hooks Location: ES 31 Class Description: Are you familiar with using Chrome and looking for new apps or sites? This is the class for you! We will explore a new Chrome app or site each day. You will have work

time to create interest­based projects using technology. This class is for intermediate users with some experience. Title: Masking Tape Art, Duct Tape Creations, and Origami, Oh My! MTDTO1 Grades: 2­7 Time: 8:00­9:15 Fee: $20 Teacher: Mrs. Burdette Location: ES 32 Class Description: Discover your creative side this summer by exploring the ancient Japanese art of paper folding and the more modern art of duct tape creations. Some projects will use both duct tape and origami! Students will make origami animals and other origami creations and explore myriad uses for duct tape and packing tape. Title: Personalize Pottery PERPT1 Grades: 1­8 Time: 8:00­9:15 Fee: $8 Teacher: Mrs. Schepp Location: ES Art Room Class Description: Pottery is one of my passions, and I would love to share it with anyone who wants to play with clay. There is nothing like getting dirty while having fun creating something for you or someone else. We will be creating projects with slabs of clay, cookie cutters and stamps. You will have the chance to create name plates, ornaments, or any other personalized pieces of pottery. Title: Pinterested in Baking! PINBA1 Grades: K­6 (limit 16) Time: 8:00­9:15 Fee: $13 Teacher: Mrs. Schettler Location: Grade School Teachers’ Lounge Class Description: In this class students will have the opportunity to bake a variety of treats including cookies, cakes, and candies. Various baking tools, such as a frosting accent decorating kit and an electric mixer, will be used as we bake up a storm. Baked items will be organized with holiday themes in mind, such as Valentine’s Day and Halloween, as well as a class birthday party! Students will be given all of the recipes to “pin” in their baking notebook. Looking forward to enjoying time spent in the kitchen creating sweet and tasty treats with up and coming bakers! Class Description: This class will explore rocks and minerals in an exciting and fun way by doing hands on experiments and allowing students to discover all about rocks and minerals in a whole new way! “Rock On” in this class and be prepared to get your hands dirty with these spectacular science projects. Some fun activities you might encounter are volcanoes and edible rocks! Title: Totally Tennis TENNIS Grades: 2­6 Time: 8:00­9:15 Fee: $0 Teacher: Mr. Beutler Location: Meet in Activity Room #42 ­ School Tennis Courts Class Description: Learn to play and enjoy the game of tennis. Tennis lessons are geared toward players of beginning levels and abilities. Each lesson will focus on one or two skills through a variety of games and drills. If you don’t have your own racket, we have some available to use. Title: YOGA YOGA1 Grades: K­5 Time: 8:00­9:15 Fee: $0 Teacher: Ms. Anderson Location: ES Library Class Description: Kids love to learn through play. Yogis will laugh, dance, and dramatize their way through multiple games while learning many yoga poses. They will also learn why yoga is healthy for their bodies and minds. Costumes vary from rock stars to pirates and everything in between! Come ready to practice your fine motor and art skills while you color, cut and design! Plan to bring an art smock to keep your clothes clean and a backpack or bag to carry all of your creations home in each day. Are you hoping to become a future Knight? Come experience the game of volleyball! Our goal will be to learn basic ball handling skills and begin to understand how the game of volleyball is played. Athletes should wear comfortable shorts, t­shirts and tennis shoes. Title: JP Robots Club JPRC2 Grades: 1­4 Time: 9:15­10:30 Fee: $0 Teacher: Mrs. Thurow Location: ES #46 Class Description: James Patterson (JP) writes books for adults and kids. He has sold more books than any other living American! You will read the first two books from his “House of Robots” series. There will be fun hands­on robotics activities to go with the plots of the books. When we finish each book, we will have a scavenger hunt to test how closely we read the books and how well we can apply what we read to solve puzzles (patterned after the Trifecta Club in 2014). Title: Inside Outside Art INOUT3 Grades: K­6 Time: 10:30­11:45 Fee: $10 Teacher: Mrs. Sigafus Location: ES 41 Class Description: Do you want to have fun creating a few art projects each day? Come join the fun making art inside and out. Inside we will make salt dough creations, use recycled materials to make whimsical creations, Fuse Bead designs and magnets, and draw, decorate and paint. Outside we will make our own sidewalk chalk, stepping stones, sand art,Tie Dye T­shirts and so much more. Title: JP Maximum Ride Club JPMRC3 Grades: 5­7 Time: 10:30­11:45 Fee: $0 Teacher: Mrs. Thurow Location: ES #46 Class Description: James Patterson (JP) writes books for adults and kids. He has sold more books than any other living American! You will read the first two books from his “Maximum Ride” series. The main characters in these books are middle school aged students who don’t fit in because they have some avian genetics (they are part bird!). They live apart from other kids and apart from their families. They want nothing less than to save the world. There will be special guests to teach us about genetics and social psychology. When we finish each book, we will have a scavenger hunt to test how closely we read the books and how well we can apply what we read to solve puzzles (patterned after the Trifecta Club in 2014). It helps improve focus and relaxation as well as build strength and increase flexibility. This Vinyasa class will introduce many yoga poses and sequences as well as focus on connecting breath and movement. Course Description: Inspired by the comics of real life inventor superheroes from the National Inventors Hall of Fame, children create solutions to STEM­based challenges including creating alternative energy power source prototypes, chasm­crossers and water filters, and apply mathematics to rescue Echo and Axon. Teams are challenged to prototype their own story using an inventor’s tool chest to design devices for Echo and Axon, and their little camera­bot, Gidge! Finally, the experience ends with a celebration as participants find the inventors within themselves. Session II – July 18­August 11 Title: First Grade, Here We Come 1STHWC Grades: K Time: 8:00­11:45 Dates: July 18 – August 11 (Monday­Thursday) Fee: $0 Teacher: First Grade Teachers Location: First Grade Classrooms Class Description: This class is designed for Kindergarten students who are transitioning to first grade and need to continue practicing the skills learned in kindergarten. It would also be a great choice for students who are perhaps shy or reserved in meeting new people and learning new routines. Students will practice the skills learned in kindergarten as they become accustomed to the first grade environment. *This class can be taken in conjunction with both Reading WIN and Math WIN. The teaching staff will work out the schedule in detail. Belleville's 10th season of youth track meets will happen again in 2016. This class is open to students enrolled in 4K (age 4) through age 14 (or entering 9th grade). Students will have the opportunity to compete in races of 25, 50, 75, 100, 200 and 400 meters, as well as the hurdles and a distance run. We will also have a 400­meter relay race for all children that would like to compete in a relay. Boys will compete against boys and girls against girls. Age groups are as follows: All preschool; 5­6 yrs; 7­8 yrs; 9­10 yrs, 11­12 yrs, and 13 ­ 14 yrs (and those going into 9th grade!). Older age groups may be combined

Title: The Science of Endurance Training SCIEND Grades: 6­11 Time: 9:00­10:00 Dates: Monday­Friday, June 13 – August 12 Fee: $2 Teacher: Mr. Wehrley Location: HS Cafeteria Class Description: Classroom time will be spent on learning about the cardiovascular system, the energy producing systems in the body, proper nutrition for endurance training and the body’s response to endurance training. Each student will measure their fitness level then participate in several different endurance programs during the summer to improve their fitness. The programs will include some or all of the following: interval training, LSD (long slow distance), tempo training and/or speed training. The students will follow the parameters of the program by engaging in jogging and running a specific speed, distance and rest on a daily basis. The students will monitor their fitness levels at regular levels by recording heart rate, respiration rate, speed and power output. At the end of the session the students will measure their fitness and evaluate the effectiveness of each program. This class is designed for students interested in human physiology and personal fitness. Students must be able to run at least a city block at the start of the program. Participants must be willing to exercise at a reasonable percentage of their fitness level on a daily basis.

Title: Yucatan Research Seminar YUCRS Grades: 9­11 Dates: June 9­29 Teacher: Mr. Belknap/Ms. Thomason Class Description: Most students taking this course will carry out research as part of the Spanish/Science Club trip to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, but it is possible for students to participate in this course without traveling (see Mr. Belknap). The course begins with an exploration of the Maya world, including ecology, culture, history and language. Then, students carry out research/service projects that they have created. Students’ ideas so far range from intercultural education to ancient Mayan cities to monkey habitat protection.
