Last year the Port handled nearly 200,000 vehicles for export and a 20% increase is predicted this year.” MV Theben will discharge first in Baltimore and then travel through the Panama Canal to Los Angeles and Tacoma on the West Coast. It is owned by the Scandinavian shipping company Wallenius Wilhelmsen and is one of a new generation of ships to take advantage of the widened Panama Canal.. Showcasing Bristol Port in UK and Europe

South Bristol Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair

Bristol Port’s expertise and capabilities across avariety of trades were showcased at two majorexhibitions in Britain and Europe last month.

The Commercial Department exhibited for thefirst time at Breakbulk, held at the Antwerp Expoin Belgium, which is billed as the world’s largest.

Elsewhere, this marked the 10th year the Porthas exhibited at Multimodal, a highlyinfluential networking event with 10,000attendees, held at the NEC Birmingham. Portrepresentatives met with the leadingshippers, importers, exporters and logisticspersonnel from the UK.

New line expands car business

The booming car business at Bristol Portreceived a further boost last month throughthe opening of a new line with a leadingoperator in the Mediterranean and Black Searegion.

Neptune Lines specialises in the transport offinished vehicles and the ship MV NeptuneAvra will bring in Renault vehicles to bedistributed around the UK to dealerships. Tomark the new relationship, Steve Baker, CarManager, boarded the vessel andexchanged flags with the captain and crew.

Tony Dent, Director of Automotive Trade,said: “We are pleased to welcome this newshipping line. It shows that Bristol really is akey location for the distribution of vehiclesaround the country thanks to our location,motorway and rail links.”

Leading sustainabilityBristol Port took centre stage at the annualconference for promoting the ‘SustainableSevern’.Jerry Stanford, Haven Master (pictured above)spoke about the role the Port plays inmanaging the waters and ever changinglandscape of the Severn Estuary. His talkinformed delegates about the corrosive natureof the mud and how sediment can build up tohigh volumes, and how the Port prides itself inmanaging this effectively.

A charity rugby match to honour a Portemployee raised £2,040 for Parkinson’s UK –and saw victory for the Port Dockers team.Wayne Harvey, Maintenance Technician andNick Venn, Training Manager, organised thegame and online auction in honour of BarryRiggs, who took retirement at Christmasafter being diagnosed with Parkinson’s.Wayne said: “We never had time to have abeer or three with him, so the idea was that

this would give us the opportunity to spend thewhole day with Barry and his family.”

Superb weather drew in the crowds, includingmany retired Port employees, who enjoyed ahard fought match between the Dockers andSouthmead RFC. A try from new apprenticeMitchell Rice secured a 32–24 victory, but thePort players were also quick to praise theirhosts, with the committee and the bar staffworking hard to make the day a success.

Soapbox volunteersPortishead will host its first ‘Soapbox’ race inJuly in aid of St Peter’s Hospice. Aspopularised by the drinks company Red Bull,Soapbox racing is a sport where teamsdesign and build hand-made vehicles tocompete against the clock in a downhill raceover a number of obstacles.The Port is a sponsor for the event, to be heldon July 16th and will enter the race! Port apprentices were treated to a tour of the Cruise& Maritime Voyages cruise liner MS Marco Polo, andlunch with the captain and crew last week.Instructor Phil Salmon, who will be celebrating 39years at the Port this month, led seven apprentices onboard. There was no such thing as a free lunchhowever: they had to earn it by completing theloading of supplies and baggage for all 800passengers. gives me a much wider perspective on the worldand it’s great to get involved with a variety ofpeople and cultures. It’s a real pleasure to be ofservice to the Port community in any way that’shelpful.

What did you want to do when you were a child?I’d wanted to be a priest from about the age of16, inspired by the example of the priest in ourparish church. I don’t come from a churchgoingfamily and when I told my mum what I wantedto do the silence was astounding!

Describe the most random day you have had?I have a Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate andthousands of miles as a yacht skipper under mybelt. Andy Ricks, Master of the Thorngarth tugsaid to me “Why don’t you come and do aproper job vicar?” So courtesy of Svitzer I went tosea with him and his crew and had a reallyinteresting day. I’ve always admired the skill oftug crews and it was a real honour to watchexperienced seamen at work.

Describe your role?Mission to Seafarers is an Anglican organisationand its primary aim is the spiritual and pastoralcare of all seafarers.

What’s the first thing you do every day?Look at the AIS live ships map, tune the radio tochannel 14 and then plan my programme ofship visiting for the day.

What is a standard day like?Part of the joy of the role is that there’s no suchthing as a standard day, there is endless variety.I’m an honorary chaplain and this is a voluntaryrole, I’m in Sunday and Monday and try to visitall the ships in dock and provide a short servicein the centre. My fellow chaplains cover theother days and we work as a team.

What is the best thing about your job?Solving a problem for someone and improvingtheir quality of life. It can be as simple assupplying and loading a phone card so they cancontact home, or something more complexconnected with work or personal life. My workgives me I get a wider the gives

The growing appeal to Britain’s booming carindustry of exporting worldwide via Bristol Porthas fuelled a record boost in figures.

A total of 18,500 cars exported last monthrepresents a 32% rise year-on-year. It is thePort’s highest figure on record for January.

As the automotive trade teams gear up for theregistration plate change on March 1, volumesof vehicles have increased by 10% year-on-year.

Tony Dent, Director of Automotive Trade, saidthe successes could be attributed to the Port’sgrowing success in attracting car business.

Approximately 700,000 cars, vans and high andheavy plant have been handled in the past year– split around 75% imports and 25% exports.

The Port prides itself on being responsive to theneeds of its automotive customers, with majorselling points including 500 acres available forcar storage, the motor-rail terminal, and its

Loose lifting equipment

Quality and Projects Manager Phil Radford hasgathered the masses yet again and organisedanother hike up the famous Black mountains ofWales. This time the aim is to raise money for theDisasters Emergency Committee and their EastAfrica appeal.

The hike will take place on 10th June 2017.beginning at 0830 and will take around eight hoursto complete depending on routes chosen andindividual fitness. For the superfit there will be anoptional extra leg reaching the most isolated andhighest point in the Black Mountains - the 811metre Wan Fach.
