How many of you have a GPS? Several cars include it as a basic feature, and many of today’s “smart phones” build GPS technology right into that small, handheld computer. I want to thank Pastor Ludwig because even though my surgery was scheduled very early in the morning, he was at the hospital—tending to his sheep—and said a beautiful prayer for me.I also want to thank Pastor Ken because despite the fact that he had never heard of ORMC or Orange Avenue, he somehow found his way there the next day and shared an uplifting prayer with me as well.To all my friends in the congregation, I want to thank you for all your cards and phone calls, but most of all, for your healing prayers. God bless each and every one of you.Jean LaPointe

To the Prince of Peace family

Thank you for your expressions of sympathy. Billie loved Prince of Peace and all its saints. Attending services at Prince of Peace always was a rewarding and uplifting experience. You all made us feel at home from the beginning. PoP is a warm, friendly church. Billie will be with me in spirit each time I attend a service there. She lives with Jesus.Love, Tony Massaro

Some people watch the Super Bowl each year gathered with friends and lots of food… some people each day worry about where their next meal is coming from. Please join youth across our nation as they demonstrate God’s love and caring for their less fortunate neighbors by fundraising money to help fight the nation’s poverty and hunger-stricken in their local communities. Drop $1 (or more) in the soup pot as you leave worship next Sunday, February 2. All donations collected will go to support our PoP Food Pantry. We have a wonderful partner for this fundraiser this year in Thrivent Financial. So let’s make it the best it can be in this simple act of caring for others! Please also continue to pray for all our PoP ministries, especially the Youth Group and the Food Pantry!

    SaVe the Date!

We have been super busy so far this year! This past month we celebrated Lutheran Schools’ week, and got to spend time with members of our church. We also enjoyed worship time with our families. How wonderful to share the message of Christ with so many awesome people. Moving forward we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day, and preparing for the Silent Auction in May.We are also happy to have begun the re-enrollment process for the 2014-2015 school year. This started in late January and will run until Monday, February 17, when we will begin open enrollment. Please tell everyone about our wonderful school! As we eagerly plan for next year, we are currently looking at the most effective ways to grow our ministry while adhering to our core values—supporting high academic achievement while modeling the love of Christ. In evaluating our overall program as a whole, we have decided to discontinue the Infant Program at this time. While this has been a difficult decision, we feel it is one that needed to be made to ensure our focus on the core values on which the Preschool was founded. Please continue to keep the staff, students, and families in your daily prayers. With God at the helm, we are sure to be successful!Blessings,

    HAppy FebruAry!

February brings the “Hearts for Jesus” project to congregations in the FL-GA District. Each year, a worthy organization or cause is chosen to receive the monies collected by the students in churches and schools in our district. In past years, our Crosstrainers have purchased shoes for the people of Burundi and helped build orphanages, schools and obtain medical ambulances to help rebuild Haiti after severe earthquakes and hurricanes devastated the small country. Our goal this year is to help the people of the Philippines. They are struggling to recover from the devastating aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, known by the Philippine people as “Yolanda.” Our monies will help bring fresh water, food and building supplies to the people who have lost everything and help them rebuild their lives. Our Prince of Peace Crosstrainers will once again host our Hoop De Doo fundraising event on Sunday, February 9, during the Sunday school hour. All monies collected will be sent to our FL-GA district office where they will be gathered and sent to benefit the Philippine people. Our Hoop De Doo 2014 theme this year is based on the Winter Olympics. We will have 10 fun activities for the kids! Each participant has been given a pledge sheet and encouraged to contact sponsors (teachers, parents, grandparents, neighbors and our PoP family, etc.) to pledge support for the event. Sponsors are able to determine how much they will pledge per point, or if they would rather pledge a flat fee to cover the entire event. At the end of our Hoop De Doo event, participants will be given a sheet with their total number of accrued points, so the pledged amount can be collected from the sponsor and turned in to Sunday school. All participants will receive recognition for their part in our Hoop De Doo 2014–The Winter Olympics! Please encourage your child to take part in this worthwhile and fun event by sponsoring them! Isn’t it great to know that your Crosstrainer is able to take an active part in the ministry of Jesus Christ with other children in the FL-GA District? Won’t you help our Crosstrainers make a difference in the lives of others?

    Kathy Hudson

perFecT ATTenDAnceCongratulations, Crosstrainers! In December 2013, eight Crosstrainers had perfect attendance—Gavin Browning, Tristan Browning, Elizabeth Green, Faith Green, Addison Jackson, Lea Jackson, Lauren Wiegand, and Matthew Wiegand. Each Crosstrainer earns an additional $1.00 stamp for their K.I.D.S. stamp book. We’re so proud of you!

eAsTer is cominGPoP wants to get the word of God into as many children’s libraries as possible! Can you help with a donated Christian book (new or like new), or money to go towards the purchase of 40 bibles for give-aways at our annual egg hunt? These books will be geared toward 3-9 year olds. Hardback books are best—think bright pictures and large lettering—but we will take any and get them in little hands! Please drop books in the box in the office marked EASTER and see DCE Emily for monetary donations. God is good!

THriVenT cHAllenGes souper boWlSuper Bowl Sunday is better known at PoP as Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday. It is the day the youth of the congregation gather funds in support of our Food Pantry. These funds will pay for the food bought (119,709 lbs. in 2013) to feed the 300 families that line up each 4th Saturday to receive their average of 36 lbs. of meat, canned goods, baked items and a lot of love!!By using careful management and food purchased from Second Harvest and other donated foods, the cost for each family per month was $2.08 in 2013. Although extremely efficient, this still represents a sizable sum of money that is not in the church budget. Therefore, Souper Sunday is essential. This is the challenge. If we can raise $3,000 on February 2, Thrivent will contribute $1,000. That would be a total of $4,000 in support of this crucial ministry. We are asking that you consider carefully the people who start lining up at 3am to get this assistance. Consider what our Lord taught concerning caring for those less fortunate and then bring your checkbooks. Not all of us can physically volunteer at the Food Pantry, but we can have the Aaron approach and hold up the arms of those who do; we can make it financially possible for the Food Pantry to continue its service in the Kingdom.Come ready to give on Souper Sunday of Caring.

People who attended our December Food Pantry received several clothing items free for their friends and loved ones. Thank you to the Food Pantry volunteers for allowing us to add to their gifts and to all who joined in giving the donations or their time to set up and take down: Russell Becker, Tyler Williams, Mike & Julie Fleming, Ligia & Moi Borges, Peg Green & kids, Gary Davis, Linda Jackson, Marge Hale, and Casi Braun.

    Lutheran Women in mission

Great news—our mites in December totaled $196! Wow! How wonderful! Remember in November when we had $95 in mites and were trying to reach a goal of $100? Obviously that goal is way too low for PoP mite savers. Keep up the

good work and remember that mites support our missions throughout the world. We had a profit of $525 from our Christmas cookie sale. A committee is looking into various missions we might support. Our World Trade Fair gave us 10% of the sales, $103. In the past we have always returned that money to Lutheran World Relief or purchased animals (chicken, pigs, etc.) to help support a family in a third-world country. That decision will be made this month. The “queen” of our LWML unit went home to be with our Lord in January. Win Scheips was such an integral part of our unit for many years and we loved her dearly. She was so anxious to see “her Al” again and her precious Savior that it is difficult to feel sad; but we will always miss her. She was an inspiration to all. This month we are selling Hershey kiss bouquets for $3 each or two for $5 on Sunday, February 9, right before Valentine’s Day. All profit will be given to missions. This is our last project this school calendar year.On Monday, April 7, the women are having a tea luncheon at Corner Rose Tea Room at 5901 S. Orange Avenue in Orlando. The profits support the Russell Home for Atypical Children. If you are interested in joining us, (cost is $20), please contact Carlene Lemcke or Sarah Browning. Our national LWML has given a $30,000 grant to train K9 comfort dogs for our Lutheran chaplains. The dogs can calm hyperactive children, bring comport to individuals after a disaster, and can facilitate conversation. They will be used to aid those who share the love of Jesus and help spread the Gospel to people who are hurting and in need.

And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward. Matthew 10:42

Is there some little deed of kindness you can do for someone this Valentine’s Day—a neighbor, someone at work, a family member, maybe a stranger?Let’s think of someone in particular to share the love of God with this Valentines Day. Give all the love you can and then try to give just a little bit more. They will be blessed and so will we. No one else may see what we do—but God will see! Just think—God does this for us each and every day! Amazing!Once again, we want to thank everyone who supported our fall fundraiser. At our January meeting we were able to donate $500 to the organ fund, $250 to The Russell Home, and $250 to support Shara Cunningham’s mission through the Missouri Synod in Kenya, East Africa. Shara is the daughter of Patricia Cunningham, a member of Prince of Peace and Young At Heart. May these gifts prove to be a true blessing.Join us in celebrating Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, February 12, at 11am, at the Golden Corral on Semoran Blvd. (towards the airport). We promise a huge variety of good food and Christian fellowship. Come and let us share the love of Christ! Bring a friend.

Each Monday evening a group of 5-6 members of Prince of Peace makes calls on people who have visited our church, or on new residents in the community. We usually do not make appointments. The team members simply “show up” at their door, introduce ourselves, and hand them a packet of information. This has been the procedure for several years every Monday evening from 6:30-8:30 pm. The evening begins and ends with group prayer. We believe we have gained new members from this activity; but more importantly, the Gospel has gone out into the community in obedience to what God says: “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 1:15-16).The team is comprised not only those who “go out,” but of our support group. We have a group of people who write personal postcards to new residents in the community, inviting them to church—and preparing them for a personal call. And one of our team members carefully prepares maps to be used on Monday evenings. We have had many evidences of the Holy Spirit helping us on Monday evenings: porch lights turned on helping us to find houses, people just returning from shopping, and cars going ahead of us so we can slip into gated communities. Recently two of us could not find a residence, so we stopped to chat with an older Hispanic lady who was watering her plants. She shared her life (which had been very difficult) with us, we prayed with her, and she would not let us go without hugs. Her final words to us were, “Thank you! I feel much better.”Our team is “a few good men” but we could use more help, and if we had some women it would facilitate speaking with the women on our calling list. We would appreciate the prayers of the whole congregation. And if the Holy Spirit is prompting you to join our team, don’t be like Jonah.Bruce Lieske, Leader Missions and Evangelism Team

FolloW your VAlues To FinAnciAl securiTyHow can you make wise decisions about your money? Start by following your values. When it comes to financial decisions, each of us has just three choices to make:

    Save1. Share2. Spend3.

Our values can serve as an internal compass to help keep us on track with what’s truly important in our lives. With this in mind, make a list of your values. Next, determine how much of your income you want to share, save and spend each week or month, based on your list of values. For example, if financial security and generosity are important, you may want to save X% of your earnings every month. You may also want to share a certain amount of your income with your congregation or a cause that’s close to your heart. Keep in mind that in addition to financial resources, you can share your time and talents to help others, too.

Greetings from your, now official, Director of Music and Technology! I would like to thank everyone who has shared their support with me in my time here at Prince of Peace. Can you believe I’ve been in this job for one year as of February 11? Me either! God has truly blessed me with such a wonderful job and such amazing people to work with.Mark your calendars for Thursday, February 27, 7pm. That is the night we will begin rehearsals for Good Friday Tenebrae services and Easter! The past few years, we’ve had a large choir for Good Friday, but not for Easter. I am asking that if you would like to participate in the choir for the Good Friday services, you prayerfully consider singing with the choir on Easter morning as well. With rehearsals beginning February 27, we will have seven weeks of rehearsals plus one “dress rehearsal” on Maundy Thursday (April 17). Rehearsals begin at 7pm and usually last until 8 or 8:30pm. Come make a joyful noise to the Lord!In other music news, we are blessed to have Lake Country High School Choir from Hartland, Wisconsin coming to visit us on Sunday, March 30. There will be about 30 students and chaperons who will need housing and transportation. The choir will need housing the night of Sunday, March 30 and transportation back to Prince of Peace Monday morning. If you are willing and able to open your home, please let me know by March 9.
