Bush answerscall to duty atCannon County

TONY STINNETTCourier Co-Editor

Brent Bush had completed his call to dutywhen he retired from the military lastsummer.

After 20-plus years serving in the Army, where he achieved the rank of lieutenantcolonel, Bush was set for retirement and anenjoyable rest of his life.

He returned to his hometown of Woodburyand took a position as a teacher andassistant football coach.

Bush did not realize it at the time butanother call to duty was waiting.

It came in March when he was namedCannon County’s new football coach, replacing Joel Schrenk who had resigned inJanuary to accept a similar position inAlabama.

The move was unexpected but it was oneBush believed he was not only ready for, butalso needed to pursue.

“I was shocked to have the opportunity,”said Bush, who is serving as a head footballcoach for the first time. “It’s not about me.It’s about the organization. I am honored tolead these young men and this program. When they gave me the opportunity I feltlike I could saddle up and do the best I can.

“I bring an experience. I don’t know if it’sthe right experience, but it’s my experience.”

Bush will lead the Lions into the 2012season opener when they play host toWatertown Friday. Kickoff is 7 p.m. Fittingly,it is also “Salute to Veterans” at SchwartzStadium.

Bush has a vested interest in the program, having played at Cannon County HighSchool and later for Head Coach BootsDonnelly at MTSU.

These are his roots and working withCannon County’s youth is his mission andpassion.

“If I am just the football coach then I havefailed,” Bush said. “You have to try to getthem to be good people and get them tounderstand about honor, dignity, trust andtruth and being a person of your word. Youhave to mean what you say.”

Make no mistake, Bush will school playersin fundamentals and conditioning. Thatmuch already is evident.

He also expects them to be good citizens. What he wants more than anything is for

Cannon County football players to be thebest they can be.

“You have to dare to be great,” Bush said.“I tell our players not to limit themselves. You have to motivate yourself and decideinternally how good you want to be. Youhave to put in the work to get there. “

Bush likes the direction of the programthrough summer conditioning and thepreseason; however, the first-year coachsays the Lions are a work in progress.

“We may fall short in some things but weare constantly trying to get better and thesekids play hard,” Bush said. “These kids havean opportunity to contribute and I want themto take advantage of that.”

Even though the Lions are coming off a(See Bush, page 5)

BUSH---tough 0-10 campaign and are 1-19 overthe last two years, Bush believes thereis a silver lining.

“We have momentum right now,” Bushsaid. “I have a great staff and the kidshave an opportunity to be a really goodteam. If we can get there it is possible toaccomplish great things. It’s tough, butit’s possible. You don’t do it for me, youdo it for the guys on the field with youand that’s what I’m trying to teach. Wehave had some hard times, sure, buthard times reveal your character.

“We have to play every play like it’s ourlast until the whistle blows. If we can dothat then we have to chance to beat anyteam in our district.”

Bush says he is realistic and realizedDistrict 8-AA is always tough; however, the Lions’ field general also refuses tosell his players short. The Lions haveperformed well during the preseasonand have made strides offensively anddefensively. Putting it all together is the

challenge ahead.“We have good young men who work

hard and want to be good,” Bush said.“These guys get to be part of somethingbigger than themselves and that’s whatthey have to understand. Kids don’t fightfor their country or play football for theirschool. They play for one another. Downrange they are fighting every day for oneanother to get their buddies home alive. It transcends all sports. That’s what itmeans when we talk about no ‘I’ inteam.”

Bush said team and individual goalsare set by the players and heencourages setting the standard high ona daily basis.

Without standards and goals he saysplayers have little to work toward.

“I want our players to set their goalshigh and work to reach them,” Bushsaid. “If you have to adjust that’s fine butyou need to have high expectations ofyourself and then give it your best toachieve them.”

Cannon County managed to score just15 touchdowns during its 2011 season.

First-year Head Coach Brent Bush ishoping a revamped offense with adifferent approach will help jumpstartthe unit during the 2011 campaign.

The Lions will have a new quarterbackafter rising junior Ryan Jordantransferred to Eagleville during thesummer. Jordan threw for 1,744 yardsand 11 touchdowns in 2011. Also goneis rising junior tight end Waylon Sedtalwho caught 28 passes for 242 yardsand a touchdown. Despite the offensive

departures Bush likes what he seesfrom the Lions during the preseason.

Senior Cody Petro was one of theteam’s chief receivers in 2011 but he willgo under center to start the 2012campaign. Sophomore Jake Todd alsohas put up strong numbers in thepreseason and will be in the offensivemix throughout the season.

“Both quarterbacks bring different

dimensons to our offense and both ofthem are good players,” Bush said.“Petro brings leadership and quicknessto the position. Jake is a solidquarterback and good athlete. He’s justyoung, but we will count on himthroughout the season. I feel goodabout both of those guys.”

Senior Justin Tobin led the team in (See Offense, page 7)

receptions (54) and yards (750)and also accounted for fourtouchdowns. He is one of the topall-around talents in District 8-AAand will be heavily counted upon.

B.J. Daniel primarily foundhimself blocking as an offensivelineman as a sophomore; however, the rising junior will be in theoffensive backfield this season.Daniel will split time at fullback andtailback. Joining him is junior HawkLove and sophomore A.J. Daniel, who did not play last season buthas made a splash during the2012 preseason. He has also seenaction at receiver.

“We have some weapons in theoffensive backfield and we haveguys that do a lot of different thingsbut they are equally important,”Bush said. “We will utilize all theskills of each of those players tothe fullest.”

Petro said the overall weaponsthe team possesses will make a

difference when the Lions hit thefield for their opener againstWatertown, Aug. 17, at home.

“We have a lot of talentedplayers,” Petro said. “I believe wehave more confidence and wehave executed well overall. Ofcourse, there is room forimprovement but the direction weare going is good and I believe wehave shown promise on offense.”

How good the Lions are able tofuntion offensively will depend onthe offensive linemen. DaltonRyan, Case Isenhart, AllanRobinson, Dillion Jackson andSean Stone are the front runnersfor starting positions.

In previous seasons the Lionshave been a predominant passingteam; however, the offensive linewill be even more important with agreater emphasis on the runninggame during the 2012 season.

“We are going to throw thefootball because we have the

weapons to do that,” Bush said. “Ilike our quarterbacks. Ourreceivers have worked hard andcontinue to improve and ourrunning backs are showing steadyimprovement and running with apurpose. In order for it all to workthose guys up front have toperform well and they have. Weneed to do better as far as gettinga push and being better in runblocking. The pass protection hasbeen good but we need to improvethe run blocking.”

Senior James Purvis is a reliablepass catcher and senior JarrettMelton has joined the squad andwill add to the depth at receiver. The Lions also plan to employ theservices of several young players, such as freshman receiver ColinAnderson and freshman tight endBo Bryson.

The Lions debut their new lookFriday against Watertown. Junior Hawk Love has seen action in the Lions’

offensive backfield each of the past two seasons.

Junior defensive stalwart B.J. Daniel, 52, pressures DeKalb County’s quarterback during a gamein 2011. Daniel will be counted on as a defensive stopper for the Lions during the 2012 campaign.

Hard hittingdefense onagenda forCannon Co. TONY STINNETTCourier Co-Editor

Cannon County’s football team is looking for an identitywhen it takes the field for the 2012 season.

The Lions appear to have found it on the defensive side ofthe football, where they are displaying a hard-hitting,enthusiastic approach and playing with a passion to turnaround past misfortune.

“We have played well in our scrimmages and we have hada good offseason,” senior Ryan McLaurine said. “We wantto play with an attitude on the defensive side of the ball. Wehave the talent to be a good defense. We have to stayhealthy and be fundamentally sound.”

Cannon County’s experience and depth is greatest on thedefensive side of the football. The Lions should enjoy muchimprovement in the area of stopping the run as thedefensive front is a strong suit.

Defensive linemen Terry Parker, Dalton Ryan and DillionJackson are staunch run stoppers. They have beenoutstanding in two preseason scrimmages and have yet toallow a rushing touchdown or more than 50 yards on theground.

“I believe we have shown some improvement and madesome gains there,” Head Coach Brent Bush said.“Everyone has to carry out their assignments and do theirjob but our guys up front are getting penetration and theyare stopping the run with consistency. That has to continuein order for us to be the team we want to be this season.”

Jonathan Smith, B.J. Daniel, McLaurine and JacksonMason form a tough combination in the middle at linebackerand end positions, along with Hawk Love, Case Isenhartand Brandon James.

“We are playing with more passion and enthusiasm ondefense,” Daniel said. “People are flying around and wehave done a good job of stopping the run, not giving up thebig plays and not allowing sustained drives. We have

(Please see Defense, page 9)

also managed to get pressure on thequarterback and make some tackles forlost yardage so that has helped too. Wehave a chance to be a very gooddefense if we keep improving and keepeveryone healthy.”

Cannon County’s defensive backfieldwill see several players rotate in aplatoon system. Cody Petro, Jake Todd,Wilder Mankin, A.J. Daniel, Justin Tobinand Ethan Smith all have seen actionthere, and senior Jarrett Melton recentlyjoined the team and has adapted to theposition as evidenced by earning a startin his first scrimmage.

“We have several players who canhelp us in the defensive backfield,” Bushsaid. “We have rotated them and tried toget several players work because theycan do a good job for our team.”

Much of the defensive backfield;however, is young and inexperiencedwith the exception of Tobin and Petro sothe young pups will be thrown to thewolves early.

“That’s why it’s important to get a goodpass rush and continue getting thatgood pressure up front,” Bush said. “Wehave to take some of the pressure off ofour secondary by getting a good pushup front and making the opposingquarterback feel a little uneasy backthere.”

McLaurine said he believes CannonCounty’s defense could be the decidingfactor as to whether the Lions have abreakthrough season in 2012.

“We have the talent to keep our teamin games and even to win games ondefense,” McLaurine said. “We have totake on the mindset and believe in it. Wehave to have a mindset that even if wegive up yards we are not going to giveup touchdowns. When teams do scoreon us we have to make them earn it andnot just score with ease.”

Cannon County’s defensive playersare saying all the right things. Moreimportantly, they are playing the rightway.
