“I started running a loader for Piette Sand and Gravelwhen I was 16 years old. They were out of Hubbardson,Mass., but are no longer in business. I wasn’t initially drawnto running heavy iron. I was actually always drawn to lawenforcement,” said Collins. And law enforcement was unexpectedly drawn to him.“I got caught driving my ATV in the gravel pit by the envi-

ronmental police. The cop asked the owner of the pit what to

do with me,” said Collins. “Mr. Piette gave me the option, back blade the haul roads with the old 966 loader, or go tojail.”At the end of the following day and having paid his debt,

the owner offered him a job operating that loader for the rightreasons.“I took to the loader like a duck to water. I ran the loader

after school and on Saturdays. Piette retired and the pitclosed so I bounced around operating equipment in the resi-dential sector,” said Collins.

Work on I-4 in FloridaIn his early 20s, Collins moved to Florida to get better

work. “From 1996 to 1998, I was part of the building boom

down there. I worked for Granite Construction, one of thebiggest companies in the world,” said Collins. “I worked onthe Interstate 4 corridor for a while.”Over time, his work ethic and reputation secured him a

superintendent position in Florida overseeing constructionon that corridor. After its completion, Collins returned toMassachusetts as an operating engineer for Local 4 inBoston, working on public works projects such as theCentral Artery, MWRA Aqueduct Tunnel and Blackstonegas-fired power plant. As part of Local 4, he also workedwith high visibility clients such as Harvard University,Brandeis University, MIT, Logan International Airport andHanscom Air Force Base, all of which presented uniquechallenges.Wanting to be closer to home after his children were born,

Collins accepted a position with a locally owned construc-tion company managing the day-to-day operations whileexecuting the work. Later, with a strong desire for new challenges and the

dream of leaving a legacy, he founded Collins and SonsExcavating.Collins’s vision is to be the most sought-after excavation

company, known for its ability to manage, execute and com-plete projects on time and on budget. He builds friendshipsalong with structures. Accomplishing the impossible while treading lightly on

the environment, Collins uses a family-owned approach andworks with American pride.Collins & Sons Excavating is dedicated to providing com-

prehensive excavation services of the highest quality toclients who seek experienced and knowledgeable profes-sionals regardless of project size.“We are committed to ensuring time and budget goals are

met with a strong emphasis on craftsmanship not usuallyseen in the industry today,” said Collins. “We strive to devel-op and maintain client relationships through diligence andconstant communication, while providing superior services. We are devoted to maintaining a safe, fair and pleasant workenvironment, which supports diversity and emphasizes

Collins Prides Himself on Safe,Organized, Efficient, Work Sitesstrong ethical values.”

In addition to excavation work, Collinsprides himself on providing a safe, efficientand organized work site that is completed ina timely fashion, even during demolition, utility work or septic/sewer installation orrepairs.

“Over the years, I have had the opportuni-ty to operate various equipment from cranesto dozers, and everything in between. I’verun equipment on barges floating in theocean, to underground in tunnels. I’ve assist-ed with the clean up of a live ammo dumpthat was interesting to say the least,” saidCollins.

“When I started my own company abouta year ago, I owned a backhoe that I boughtto do the site work on my house, some 10years ago.

“I got a lead from my friend Paul Morin, who works for Schmidt Equipment, thatthey had taken in a Hitachi 160 for trade. Itwas in good shape we mounted a powerthumb on it, gave it a new coat of paint andwent to work,” said Collins. “I’d like tothank Schmidt Equipment, and John Deere

for taking a chance on a start up business ina less than ideal economy.”

Hobbling for JobsWith a foot in a cast and a newly acquired

machine, Collins hopped around the CentralMassachusetts area for work.

“I had to go out and find jobs. I just basi-cally jumped with both feet in, and one wasin a cast,” Collins said. “The injury definite-ly bogged me down at first. It was miserablegetting in and out of that cab dozens of timesa day. I really slowed the healing process bypushing myself, but I was determined. Andslowly we gained momentum and the phonestarted to ring.”

One of the first jobs he landed was for theNorcross Wildlife Sanctuary, restoring ariverbed. He then began doing frequent sub-contracting work for the well-establishedIacovelli Excavation out of Northbridge.

One of the great advantages to workingfor himself is setting his owntimetable/schedule. His wife Alicia is a vitalpart of the operation.

Collins & Sons Excavating Survives FirstYear, Finishes in Black by Working“I’m more or less a one-man show,

and when I need help, I turn to my fam-ily. My wife Alicia is a controller forFarm Credit East. They are an agricul-tural lending cooperative supplyingloans to industry such as dairy farms, vineyards and timber/logging,” saidCollins. “She does our books andbilling and all that good stuff.”With his own company, Collins can

finish work and watch his sons grow upwhile being a very active part of theirlives. The apple doesn’t fall far fromthe tree: his oldest son is an award-win-ning Motocross GP rider and a skilledequipment operator at age eight.“My sons are named Tucker Lee and

Wyatt. Tucker’s weekend hobby isMotocrossGP. He just got 1st place, racing the JDay Series, off-road, whichis held all over New England,” saidCollins “Today [June 29], inHuntington, Mass., he got his first winin his division, based on age and bikesize.

“Tucker decided to get into the dirtbikes all on his own. He decided it wassomething he wanted to do. I told him,‘If you do it, commit to it, be the bestyou can be.’ Today’s race was unique. It was called Dozer Memorial GP,sponsored by Girroir Trucking andConstruction. The Dozer Memorial, right up our alley.”Collins is the first generation in the

heavy iron industry. He did not learn itfrom family members.“I always kind of wished I had that

opportunity, but I didn’t. So, if my boysdecide that they don’t want to go toschool to become a doctor or an archi-tect I feel it is important for them toalways have a trade to fall back on.”

One Year Painted Black

Collins & Sons Excavating servescentral New England, and the greaterBoston area.He has survived that tough first year

with hard work and pride. “We finished out the season in the

black. In my opinion, during the firstyear of business for excavation, toknow we live in a depressed area wherethere is not a lot of work, to have thebills paid, and the lights on, is a hugesuccess, believe me,” Collins said.“We built some new relationships

and gained some friendships along theway, and that’s what it is really allabout. We are really trying to bring ahuman factor and a level of craftsman-ship back into the construction tradethat has been lost.”His advice is simple to anyone work-

ing for someone else that wants to goforward on their own but just cant pullthe handle trigger. “My advice would be to stop pro-

crastinating and roll the dice,” saidCollins. For more information, call 774/696-
