Developing a Viable Electronic Sell-through Marketplace

ISSUES

- Digital entertainment business is transitioning from Optical Media to Online Electronic Sell-through.

- Apple uses its FairPlay DRM to lock consumers to its devices and to its online digital content service.

- DRM interoperability is a big issue.

- Consumers do not want to buy content twice.

Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE)

- Maintains “rights locker” for purchased DECE content

- Purchased devices are registered to a single domain

- Purchased content plays on all registered devices

- Unlimited copying to registered devices in domain

- Previously-purchased content can be downloaded again

- Digital rights include the right to burn one DVD copy

- More information to be released at 2009 CES
