WEEK 1: Jun. 19-23A.M. Academies 9 a.m.–12:15 p.m.

Cook Breakfast for Mom (or Dad) Surprise your family with a delicious breakfast! You will learn the basics of breakfast cooking including eggs, French toast, pancakes, waffles, breakfast muffins, and breakfast meats. This academy will cover basic sanitation principles, knife usage and safety in the kitchen, as well as the basics of food preparation. You will learn about the culinary industry and food service occupations. Chef Tom Goss has been in the hospitality/restaurant business for 45 years. He has a master’s degree from the prestigious Cornell Hotel School, is a certified club manager and sanitation instructor, and has owned and operated seven restaurants. He has taught students from elementary through high school and currently teaches culinary arts at CATEC.

Intro to Engineering & DesignDo you like to learn how things work? What do engineers really do? In this hands-on academy, you will design and build a small machine with moving parts. Working together with other students, you will brainstorm, prototype, test, and evaluate your own design creation. You will learn all about designing, testing, and improving your design project. While working on your project, you will learn about the engineering field and its many applications and career pathways. No prior experience is necessary. Wayne Zink has over 20 years of elementary through high school classroom experience in Virginia and California school systems and is a U.Va. admissions application reader. He is a life-long tinkerer, artist and maker. His expertise areas include technology, engineering, physics, robotics, coding, photography, arts and STEAM integration.

Firefighting: All the Basics Do you have what it takes to be a firefighter? In this exciting, hands-on academy, you will learn all about firefighting skills, safety, and equipment uses. Do you know how the fire service started? You will learn about the key skills of firefighting, firefighting as a career field, and what is available in the local community. Captain Bobby Elliott is a retired fire captain with the City of Charlottesville Fire Department and was with the Fluvanna County Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years. He has been the lead instructor for the Fire Service Academy at CATEC for 14 years.

Make & Decorate Amazing CupcakesWin the cupcake decorating war! You will learn the basic skills of: how to make cupcakes from scratch and bake properly; how to make basic icing; and how to decorate cupcakes using basic

techniques. A friendly cupcake decorating “war” will show off your creative design abilities. This academy will cover basic sanitation principles, knife usage and safety in the kitchen, as well as the basics of food preparation. Intro to Unity Game Engine & ProgrammingLearn to code and build customized games! Many games you already play are built with the Unity game engine. Unity is a platform that helps professionals build games easily without having to start from scratch. You will build a customized 2D- type platform game. The simple scripts used to make things happen in the game serve as a fun introduction to the C++ and or Javascript programming languages. That’s real coding. You will also explore physics, art, and sound design as you build your own unique levels. John Haverkamp is skilled in a wide range of artisanal crafts and in various educational computer software programs, including programming, 3-D software and 3-D modeling and animation. His artistic mediums include steel, bronze, and clay. He has taught youth and adults in community, school, and university settings.

BizKid$ Money Matters Ever dream about becoming a millionaire or owing your own business? Become a BizKid! Join us for a week of activities and games focused on money and entrepreneurship. Learn how to be a smart consumer so you can make the most of your money. Activities include an interactive game where you will earn a paycheck and chose how to spend it. We’ll also brainstorm business ideas. You will develop strategies and campaigns to make your product a success and explore ways your business can give back to our local community. Cassandra Riggin, financial education specialist at the UVA Community Credit Union, has taught financial education to individuals, schools, and community organizations throughout our region.

Cosmetology Basics: Hair, Skin & NailsLearn about exciting cosmetology careers and the latest trends! You will learn how to take care of your own hair, skin, and nails. Find out how to style hair in braids, simple hair styles, skin care basics, and makeup for everyday wear. While learning about manicures, you will have the opportunity to create some of the nail art designs popular today. Char Whetzel has been a licensed cosmetology and barbering instructor for 14 years. She currently teaches at Greene County Technical Center and has previously taught at CATEC. She has 30 years of experience in the field and works part-time in a salon.

Create or Update Student Profile Account Previous KidsCollege Student? All previous students have an online account with student user name and password which is needed to register online. Don’t have it? Call or email 434.961.5354 or [email protected]. IMPORTANT: Carefully review and update all student profile information: emails, phone numbers and addresses. New KidsCollege Students: Create a separate online student profile for each student under the student’s name. Save your user name and password. Create each account using the student’s name. However, enter the email address for the primary parent/guardian.

This academy is truly “hands-on!” You will be given numerous simple and basic recipes for making cookies, short breads, biscuits, pancakes, brownies, and scones. Creative Makeovers: Refinish & RedesignAre you a do-it-yourselfer who likes to work with your hands? Do you ever look at a household item and think about other ways it could be used? If so, then this academy is for you! You will learn how to effectively and safely refinish and re-purpose household decor items (a.k.a. “upcycle”). Upcycling not only saves money; it also challenges you to use your creativity and problem solving skills. You may bring in your own household decor item to upcycle or choose from a selection of donated items. Megan Panek has taught for 14 years. She has her master’s degree in education and currently teaches english at CATEC. In her spare time, she is an avid do-it-yourselfer who has been up-cycling for years. She enjoys giving new life to old furniture and household items.

Getting Job Ready–In One Week! Do you want a job? Through fun and educational activities, you will learn all the essential skills and strategies to find, get, and keep a job, even if you’re under 15 years old! Find out the best way to search for jobs online, create an effective resume, and ace a job interview. Learn from HR (human resources) experts how to be successful once you get a job. Amanda Jay has been an English instructor for more than 10 years and has been teaching career development strategies to high school students for the last seven years at CATEC. She specializes in blending career and technical education and English courses to create unique learning experiences designed to help 21st century students prepare to enter the workforce.

Refund Policy: Participants must withdraw from an academy at least (5) business days before that academy is scheduled to begin to receive a full refund. No refunds will be provided after this time. Refund requests must be made in writing be mail, fax (434. 961.5270) or email ([email protected]). Include your name, student ID number, course title and reason for refund. Please note: If a student is registered by a staff nember or pays by check, your Social Security number. will be required in order to provide a refund check from the State of Virginia. Refund checks from the State of Virginia take 3-5 weeks to process.If a class is cancelled due to low enrollment, we will notify you within 7-10 days in advance and offer other programs.
