I. <UPI) - A husky, 17 - year - old high school football captain and track star who allegedly admitted hack- ing two women to death goes to court today. Thomas R. Knott of 104 Byron Avenue will appear in East Provi- dence Family Court for the slay- ing of Mrs. Nancy Ann Frenier, 19, of Pawtucket 13 months ago. Knott, recently elected captain of the Tolman High School foot- ball team, confessed Sunday to the knife murders of Mrs. Fren- ier and Mrs. Edith Martin, 38, of Attleboro, Mass., police said. (UPI) — Bloomfield Town- ship is a small, wealthy Detroit suburb of expensive modern homes. But its residents live be- hind drawn curtains. At night, outside lights are left burning until dawn. Bloomfield Township is gripped in fear. A sniper who stalks the town by night has attacked three times, firing a 22-caliber gun through windows of the private homes. Twice he has missed his tar- gets. The third time a mother of five children was shot in the head and fell dead in the kitchen of her home. Mrs. Mary Godfrey, 38, was shot to death Friday night as she brewed a pot of coffee in the kitchen of her $40,000 split - level home. Police were without leads. The entire 19-man force was on duty patrolling the snow-covered, dim- ly lighted streets in seach of the sniper. They were looking for a teen- aged boy. Police Chief Norman Dehnke said they believed a boy was responsible for the shootings because of the hour they oc- curred, early evening, and the fact the sniper traveled on foot. "We believe the killer may be a boy about 14. All three shoot- ings occurred at about the latest hour when a boy that age would be allowed out," Dehnke said. Mrs. Godfrey, the wife of a Baptist lay minister, had been watching television with her hus- band when they decided to have some coffee. She went into the kitchen, which fronted on the street, to prepare it and did not return. Her husband, Donald, 44, told officers he went to look for her and found her dead on the floor The first sniping incident oc- curred at 8:15 Tuesday night, Jan. 15. and the second came 24 hours later. The first shooting was at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hans, only two blocks away from the Godfrey home. They were watching tele- vision when a shot cracked the sliding glass door opening onto their back yard. The next night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pittsley the sniper struck again. The couple's daughter, Nancy, 16, was reading a book in the family room of the house when her dog, Cappie, began barking. Nancy said she went back in- side and closed the drapes^ "Suddenly," she said, nhere were two snapping, cracking sounds, very close together." Mattson's s t u d e n t s included teen - agers and gray - haired grandmothers all interested in one thing:

"We want to know how to de­fend ourselves," said Mrs. Helen Hardiman, 35, of Dorchester. Mrs. Hardiman brought her 14-year-old daughter Linda to the class at the Dorchester National Guard Arm­ory.

"I want Linda to know some­thing to do instead of standing frozen with fear," Mrs. Hardiman said.

Mattson, who wears the black belt of a karate expert, showed the women something to do.

Larry Cavicchio, 23, of Arling­ton watched with pride as his 50-] year - old mother Angela broke! loose from a strangle grip and! whacked her "attacker" across! the throat with a flattened hand.;

"I'm glad she's learned this,"! he said.

So were other husbands and fathers who looked on during the strange session. And so were the women themselves, many of them haunted by fear of Boston's "mad strangler" of recent months.

A nurse said, "I have a long walk to the bus stop when I'm on all - night duty. Now I can walk the streets without fear."

Lt. Gov. Francis X. Bellotti, who; learned judo in the Navy and took up karate last year, demonstrated special karate push - ups at the session.

Afterwards he said, "This is Just a blueprint But if women can be taught just a normal de-j fense reaction they can throw j their attacker off momentarily.

"Most women freeze instead of trying to think. This can be as fatal as it is for someone drown­ing."

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (UPI) — Bloomfield Town­ship is a small, wealthy Detroit suburb of expensive modern homes. But its residents live be­hind drawn curtains.

At night, outside lights are left burning until dawn.

Bloomfield Township is gripped in fear. A sniper who stalks the town by night has attacked three times, firing a 22-caliber gun through windows of the private homes.

Twice he has missed his tar­gets. The third time a mother of five children was shot in the head and fell dead in the kitchen of her home.

Mrs. Mary Godfrey, 38, was shot to death Friday night as she brewed a pot of coffee in the kitchen of her $40,000 split - level home.

Police were without leads. The entire 19-man force was on duty patrolling the snow-covered, dim­ly lighted streets in seach of the sniper.

They were looking for a teen-aged boy. Police Chief Norman Dehnke said they believed a boy was responsible for the shootings because of the hour they oc­curred, early evening, and the fact the sniper traveled on foot.

"We believe the killer may be a boy about 14. All three shoot­ings occurred at about the latest

hour when a boy that age would be allowed out," Dehnke said.

Mrs. Godfrey, the wife of a Baptist lay minister, had been watching television with her hus­band when they decided to have some coffee. She went into the kitchen, which fronted on the street, to prepare it and did not return.

Her husband, Donald, 44, told officers he went to look for her and found her dead on the floor

The first sniping incident oc­curred at 8:15 Tuesday night, Jan. 15. and the second came 24 hours later. The first shooting was at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hans, only two blocks away from the Godfrey home. They were watching tele­vision when a shot cracked the sliding glass door opening onto their back yard.

The next night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pittsley the sniper struck again.

The couple's daughter, Nancy, 16, was reading a book in the family room of the house when her dog, Cappie, began barking.

Nancy said she went back in­side and closed the drapes^

"Suddenly," she said, nhere were two snapping, cracking sounds, very close together."

She and her mother investi­gated and found two holes in the plate glass of one of the doors.
