EnglishToday we are going to use ‘The Arrival’ by Shaun Tan to draft the opening paragraph of our diary, which is from the point of
view of the girl shown in the images in Part One.
I can write an opening of a diary using examples I have looked at.
On the following slides are some examples of diary openings…
They aren’t about The Arrival… I want you to think about the level of vocabulary, the use of punctuation and the way they have been written informally to match with that diary style. I will point out in each example what I think they have done well.
Use these to help you -along with your plan- to write your diary opening.
Example 11. Chronological order –
starting with the morning.
2. Range of punctuation including hyphenated words, dashes and brackets to mark parenthesis.
3. Rhetorical questions.
This child needs to make sure they accurately punctuate all sentences so check that you do that in your draft too!
Example 2
1. Chronological order
2. Exclamation – typical of informal writing
3. Use of contracted forms – another typical feature of informal writing
4. Use of conjunctions –so, because etc.
Example 3
1. Varying sentence openers
2. Dashes to mark clauses
3. Semi-colon to mark clauses
4. Excellent vocabulary choices that set the scene.
Example 4
1. Beginning by expressing emotion first.
2. Short sentences for effect
3. Excellent vocabulary choices
4. Ellipsis
5. First person throughout but not every sentence begins with I
