This document provides an overview of the Kulliyyah and the Department, the background of

the BIT programme, the programme objectives, the curriculum structure, and the synopsis of

each course.

KULLIYYAH OF ICT’S VISION AND MISSION

Vision: To be an international Centre of Educational Excellence in ICT imbued with Islamic

values and ethics.

Mission: i. To develop high impact global players in ICT.

ii. To produce ICT leaders and knowledge-workers who are versatile, innovative,

entrepreneurial

in response to the societal needs.

iii. To promote ICT as the key enabler in the transformation of the Ummah.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Information Systems (DIS) was first established in 1998 under the Kulliyyah

of Economics & Management Sciences. With the establishment of KICT in 2001, DIS was

transferred into the new Kulliyyah. At the moment, DIS has about 36 academic staff, and about

500 undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Currently, DIS offers the Bachelor in Information Technology (BIT) at the undergraduate level,

Master in Information Technology (MIT) at the Masters level, and PhD in Information

Technology (P_IT) at the doctoral level. The Master programmes are currently offered in four

modes i.e. Master by research, coursework, coursework and dissertation, and coursework and

research project. The PhD programme is currently offered by research mode only.

THE BACKGROUND OF THE BIT PROGRAMME

The initial programme offered under the Kulliyyah of Economics & Management was called

Bachelor of Management Information Systems (BMIS). The first batch graduated in September

2001. With the formation of KICT in November 2001, BMIS was transferred to KICT.

In July 2002, a revised curriculum for BMIS was introduced, whereby the Kulliyyah- Required

courses were revamped to reflect the technology-oriented programme. Although managerial

courses are still an important component in the new BIT curriculum, the proportion has been

reduced drastically to accommodate for more IT related courses, following the standards set by

the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia. The revised curriculum was renamed as the

Bachelor in Information Technology (BIT). In October 2004, the BIT programme received the

recognition by the Public Services Department of Malaysia, which implies that IIUM BIT

graduates are nationally recognized as at par, if not better, than other BIT graduates in the

country. In June 2008, the IIUM Senate endorsed the new BIT programme for the new students

in Semester 1, 2008/2009. Hence, the Department is concurrently running two BIT programmes;

the BIT programme for batch of students 073 and below, and the BIT programme for 081 and

above.

The BIT programme is focused towards providing in-depth and up-to-date knowledge in major

areas of Information Technology to the students. Students following the programme are

required to complete substantial amount of management and business related courses besides IT

or Computer Science courses. The business exposure is necessary for the new breed of IT/IS

professionals, as effective and efficient use of the technology is an important element in

achieving competitive advantage for business organizations and excellence in service for

government and non-profit organizations.

Page 4: New BIT Structure for 081 Above

4

THE OBJECTIVES OF BIT PROGRAMME

The main objective of the IIUM BIT programme is to produce IT professionals with the

following competencies:

Strong technical skills – able to comprehend the sophistication of IT, as well as able to

determine, develop and manage information systems as needed by the organization;

Sufficient management and problem solving skills - able to make good decisions

related to IT use and implementation in organizations;

Innovative and entrepreneurial – ability to identify strategic opportunities in using IT

that lead organizations to gaining competitive edge or providing superior services;

Strong ethical and moral values – applying Islamic values in their professionalism as

well as having good moral character.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the programme, the BIT students are expected to:

1. Acquire and apply the knowledge, tools and methodologies of IT.

2. Demonstrate an ability to understand and analyse the fundamental aspects of business

organizations, models and processes.

3. Integrate IT-based solutions into user environments within business, organisation and

societal context in accordance to standards and good practices.

4. Demonstrate effective communication, teamwork, managerial, entrepreneurial and

leaderships skills.

5. Demonstrate an ability to evaluate the impacts of IT in global, economic, environmental

and societal context.

6. Demonstrate an ability to adhere to the professional and ethical responsibility in

developing and utilising IT in accordance to the teachings of Islam.

7. Recognise the need for, and ability to engage in life long learning.

CAREER OPPORTUNITY

The programme orientation is expected to produce a new breed of IT professionals that are

capable to understand the rapid technical development in IT and how IT can be instrumental in

the growth of their respective organizations. Graduates of BIT seek positions in government,

healthcare, industry, education and finance, where their technical knowledge and skills, and

their understanding of the organizational, social and cultural contexts make them valuable

employees.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT (FYP)

The Final Year Project (FYP) offers student an opportunity to undertake an individual or a group

work which student would find both challenging and interesting. The project is to be completed

within the span of two (2) consecutive regular semesters, coded as INFO 4998 for FYP I and INFO

4999 for FYP II. Each course carries 3 credit hours and graded separately.

FYP registration is restricted to 3rd

and 4th year students only. Students must complete the following

courses:

1. CSC 1100 - Elements of Programming

2. CSC 1103 - Object Oriented Programming

3. INFO 2102 - Database Systems II

4. INFO 2201 - Multimedia Technology

5. INFO 2401 - System Analysis and Design

6. INFO 2601 - Data Communication in Business

7. INFO 2301 - Web Programming I

8. INFO 3401 - Human Computer Interaction

9. INFO 3501 - Project Management in IT

Each student would be allocated with a supervisor who will offer guidance and whom student will

meet on a weekly or biweekly basis.

Prior to registering for FYP 1, students will be briefed by the FYP Coordinator after the mid-term

break. After that, students are required to discuss their proposed topics with their potential supervisors

and submit their project proposals to the Department. They should decide the project area (currently

Multimedia or System Development) and plan to take not more than 15 credit hours in the semesters

that they are taking FYP.

Once project proposals have been submitted, supervisors will be assigned to them in the first week of

the semester. Students would initially be required to refine their proposals, do a literature review,

requirement analysis, design the product and produce an interim report after one semester (FYP I

report). Finally, upon completion of the project, students are required to produce a Final Report of

approximately 10,000 words in length. In addition, students are required to present their software

products to a panel of FYP assessors. Assessment is based on the management of the project, the

methodology, the intellectual quality and originality of the work, the structure and coherence of the

report.

For the past two semesters, the Kulliyyah has awarded Best Final Year Projects for outstanding

projects, judged by an independent Panel of Assessors. The Awards were presented at the Grand

KICT Graduation Dinner.

Copies of past FYP reports are available at the KICT Resource Centre, next to DLIS Office.

For the details, please refer to the Final Year Project Handbook or the respective Final Year Project

Coordinator.

INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT (INFO 4997)

Industrial Attachment (previously known as Practical Training) is a pre-condition for graduation of

BIT programme, with 6 credit hours. The purpose of Industrial Attachment is to provide students

with an exposure to real work environment and how projects are implemented in organizations. The

duration of the attachment is about 6 months, and currently being conducted during Semester 3.

Only 3rd

and 4th year students are allowed to undergo the Industrial Attachment. However, local

students are encourage to undergo Industrial Attachment in their final semester to increase the

possibility of being recruited by the company at the end of the training. Prior to registering for

Industrial Attachment, students must complete the following courses:

INFO 2102 - Database Systems II

INFO 2201 - Multimedia Technology

INFO 3501 - Project Management in IT

INFO 2601 - Data Communication in Business

Generally, students are encouraged to find their own placements; in case of difficulty, the Department

will assist them in getting the place. Either case, students must make sure that they are assigned to IT

projects, or at least attached to an IT department or unit. During the training, each student will be

assigned a Kulliyyah Supervisor i.e. a DIS lecturer as a liaison person between the department and the

organization, and a Company Supervisor. The Kulliyyah Supervisor will visit the student and meet

with the Company Supervisor, and at the end of the period, both supervisors will assess the student.

In addition, assessment will also incorporate the company’s overall feedback and the student’s report.

For the details, please refer to the Practical Training Booklet or the Practical Training Coordinator.
