From the Executive Director Dear Friends of New Beginnings, Thank you for supporting New Beginnings in 2012. Your support shows me that you share our compassion for and commitment to improving the lives of Maine’s most vulnerable youth. With all the reductions in public funding, 2012 was a difficult year for many nonprofits. I can happily say that we are still here and stronger than ever! In 2012 we worked hard to secure federal, state, and private funds, and to share our mission with a wider audience. With assistance from TD Charitable Foundation and the Best Buy Children’s Foundation, we launched an educational support program for youth disconnected from education. The goal is to get these youth excited about learning again — a pilot has started at our 436 Main Street site in Lewiston. We are eager to raise funds to expand the pilot and create a “learning lab” at our new building. Once renovated, our new building at 134 College Street will house the new education program, centralized offices, and allow expansion of our now-overcrowded Outreach Drop-In Center. With your help we will bring this former Jewish Community Center back to life as a vibrant and supportive place for youth. I envision youth from all of our programs playing sports in the gym, performing on the stage, and eating healthy meals prepared in the commercial kitchen. The space also offers many opportunities for community collaboration. Much was accomplished in 2012 to continue our essential services for youth experiencing homelessness in Maine, yet work remains. I am pleased to report that we are ready, motivated, and looking forward to a successful 2013! On behalf of the youth, staff, and Board, you have my sincere thanks for making it all possible. From the Executive Director

Dear Friends of New Beginnings,

Thank you for supporting New Beginnings in 2012.

Emergency Shelter

Our shelter program has served youth ages 12-19 with emergency housing 365 days a year since 1980. One of only two 24-hour youth shelters in Maine, we provide meals, case management, educational support, life skills and recreation in a supportive home-like environment for up to 12 youth at a time. Of 180 youth that utilized the shelter in 2012, 73 returned home and 45 went on to our TLP or another permanent placement.

The Host Home Program that places youth in a certified private home for 7-21 days of shelter, expanded to York, Cumberland, and Androscoggin Counties in 2012.

In addition to meeting youth’s immediate shelter need, we provide 24-hour phone referrals and on-going family mediation services that work to prevent homelessness or the need for a shelter stay. Two-thirds of the youth participating in mediation returned home in 2012 and over 90% did not return for a repeat stay.

Transitional Living Program (TLP)

The TLP provides housing, life skills, and adventure challenge programs to youth ages 16-21 who are currently homeless. Sites are in Androscoggin, Franklin, and Kennebec counties, with Cumberland county plans for 2013.

Independent apartments and supervised group living options focus on increasing the knowledge and skills youth need to transition to adulthood and living in their own. Knowledgeable staff provide adult guidance to youth and promote real life experiences with education, employment, per-sonal growth and household management. Youth may stay for 18 months and receive up to 1 year of aftercare support. In 2012, the TLP provided 10,570 bed nights of service with an average daily occupancy of 29 youth. Of the youth that exited, 92% moved on to safe and stable housing.

Outreach & Education

The Outreach program provides a life-line for youth and young adults that are homeless or living in unstable circumstances. Through the Lewiston Drop-In Center and street out-reach in Lewiston, Augusta, and Franklin County, Outreach workers build relationships with youth ages 14-24 to help them make changes in their lives.

The Drop-In Center has been bursting at the seams, serving an average of 37 youth per day with food and a safe place to rest & recreate, shower, and get basic needs/hygiene supplies. The staff and youth are giving input into the design of the expanded Drop-In Center at the new College Street building and are eager to move. In 2012, we served over 7,800 meals to 485 youth that utilized the Drop-In Center.

Once trust is established, on-going case man-agement offers essential support for youth that have not been engaged with employment, education, or family support and often have substance or mental health issues. A record number of 189 youth participated in 2012, with 88% finding stable housing.

New Beginnings helped conduct a major Health Risk Behavior Survey of 300 homeless youth statewide in 2012. Results indicated that this population continues to be at high risk for exposure to HIV and pregnancy. Our Prevention Educator led groups for 170 youth and trained staff from 43 agencies and alternative schools in risk-reduction.

After a falling-out with my parents, I found myself 17, pregnant and homeless … the Shelter took me in and helped me with family mediation and continuing my education. Today I’ve raised an amazing little boy, graduated from community college, and I am working as a bank teller. I owe everything that I’ve become to New Beginnings.
