contents EDITOR’S CHOICE The New Year brings with it the perfect opportunity for a new beginning. Its energy gives us the momentum to shed old ways, embrace new resolutions and healthy living habits. My focus is going to be on getting fit and to be more aware of what I put into my body.

There are so many positive steps we can take from green living to conscious shopping to the relationships we have, the food we eat and finding the right balance. Yours might be about spending time gardening. Aside from the obvious nutrition-enhancing benefits of growing your own veggies, science has linked gardening to better mental health and

stress relief – in fact, lack of access to the outdoors has a negative effect on your health and wellbeing. Evidence suggests that spending time in nature with your family will reduce stress levels, encourage creativity, enhance your wellbeing and strengthen family relationships. So, visit our store for inspiration and reap the benefits of growing your own. We have a range of heritage seeds in the Green Living shop and all sorts of exciting gardening innovations. New energy saving building regulations are now firmly in place in South Africa and will definitely contribute to helping people be more aware of their energy usage and their impact on the environment. Certainly, solar power is a no-brainer in SA with our beautiful climate. Bring in some eco-conscious changes and choices in your home and spend more time simply enjoying the peace and comfort this will bring to your life. You might want to follow the Meat Free Monday drive and go veggie once a week. This year we have decided to dedicate our covers to our suppliers and we hope to introduce you to many of them during the next twelve months. In this issue we get to grips with the scourge of genetically modified food. We offer tips on which food or supplements will give you the boost you need to achieve all your goals and aspirations. We also look at worrying ingredients in food and share our top anti-aging tips. Of course, this time of the year also sees little one’s going back to school, or going to school for the first time, so we offer you tips on how to ensure they are properly loved and nurtured through it all.

Here’s to a fantastic year, filled with energy and wellbeing.

Yours in wholeness Dr Sean Gomes, Co-founder

and trying out different combinations of food and spices. He wanted food that could match up to meat and make you feel as satisfied - food that was healthy and tasty to boot. All these efforts in the kitchen were solely for his family. Never did he think of creating food commercially until a friend set up a meeting for him with Pick ‘n Pay. Without any packaging or branding and with no knowledge of the commercial food industry, Wally went along with tasters. This wasn’t the way you presented to major food suppliers but when he convinced the buyers to sample his offerings he walked away stunned to have a substantial order. Tammy relays the story of how he was put on the spot when someone asked what the company was called. He simply said Fry’s Food and in retrospect that isn’t the best name at all, when fry is associated with being unhealthy. “With the new name ‘Fry’s Family’ I think people understand this is our family name and not that the products are fried.” Since those early beginnings the company has grown substantially and produces 23 products distributed to over 20 countries. The whole family is employed by the company including the three daughters. Two of the daughters are married and their husbands also work for the company.

“Yes, we do talk shop at family events, this is often when we come up with our best ideas when everyone is brainstorming together. I don’t think it’s a bad thing, we are all very passionate and love what we do,” says Tammy who is the Marketing Director.

Her husband, Richard Kelly, is the Compliance Director who ensures the highest international standards. Hayley, the middle daughter, creates delicious new vegetarian products while her husband Shaun Richardson, works on the export side of the company. The youngest daughter Stacey has also recently joined the company.

The business is driven by a passion to create delicious and cruelty-free food that has as little impact on the natural environment as possible. “We measure our success in terms of how many cows we have saved, or the saving to the environment,” says Tammy. Our emphasis is to put principles over profits.

To this end, Fry’s launched the Meat Free Monday campaign in South Africa. Their premise being that we only have one

Earth and if we wish to keep it for future generations we need to ask ourselves how we can help protect the environment. The best way to offset your carbon footprint is to eat less meat.

A report concluded by Jeff Anhang and Robert Goodland for World Watch found that livestock accounts for 51% of all Greenhouse Gases. That’s more than every form of transportation in the world combined. The reason for this is because two of the gases livestock produce are Methane and Nitrous Oxide – which are 20 times and 296 times, respectively, more powerful in terms of global warming potential.

Besides all the green benefits, Fry’s Family Food is both delicious and healthy. All round, we give them the thumbs up for making it easier to become vegetarian and for supplying a variety of mouthwatering options.

HAVING MEAT FREE DAYS WILL HELP:• Avoid excessive CO2 production• Reduce methane/nitrous oxide production• Save large amounts of water• Avoid polluting our streams/rivers/oceans• Reduce destruction of topsoil and tropical

rainforest• Reduce the destruction of wildlife habitats

and endangered species• Reduce the use of antibiotics, growth

promoters and chemicalsFry's FamilyThere are so many with fabulous

stories, pioneering product innovation and setting the bench mark for high standards. In bringing you the best wellness products we rely on suppliers and are grateful to those who make wonderful products available to us. In our first month of featuring suppliers we are proud to focus on the Fry’s family who are not only pioneers in the vegetarian market but have impeccable principles and from humble beginnings have achieved worldwide success.

“Twenty years ago there really wasn’t a lot of vegetarian food available”, says Tammy Fry, daughter of Wally and Debbie Fry. Tammy has been a vegetarian all her life. Her father,

however, only converted to vegetarianism after being commissioned to build a piggery. First hand exposure to animal slaughter and the meat industry was all it took to switch him off meat forever. “That’s the problem,” emphasises Tammy, “most people have never visited a slaughter house or abattoir and don’t see how animals are killed or the conditions in which they are reared. We are very removed from the whole process, most kids don’t know the drumstick they are eating is actually chicken, we buy our meat from supermarkets and are removed from the process.

Unable to eat meat, Wally wasn’t completely satisfied with platefuls of broccoli and sprouts. Tammy remembers how he would spend hours in the kitchen experimenting

REDUCE HEART DISEASE: Recent data from a Harvard University study found that replacing saturated fat-rich foods (eg. meat and full fat dairy) with foods that are rich in polyunsaturated fat (eg. vegetable oils, nuts and seeds) reduces the risk of heart disease by 19%.

FIGHT DIABETES: Research suggests that a higher consumption of red and processed meat increases the risk of type 2 diabetes.

CURB OBESITY: People on low-meat or vegetarian diets have significantly lower body weights and body mass indices. A recent study from Imperial College London also found that reducing overall meat consumption can prevent long-term weight gain.

LIVE LONGER: Red and processed meat consumption is associated with modest increases in total mortality, cancer mortality and cardiovascular disease mortality.

IMPROVE YOUR DIET: Consuming beans or peas results in higher intakes of fibre, protein, zinc, iron and magnesium and lower intakes of saturated fat and total fat.

Having meat free days or going vegetarian has many health benefits:

GM food is modified to include a pesticide inside the germ of the seed and it is basically cloned so that we can expect perfectly shaped fruit and vegetables on the supermarket shelf. The most common modified foods are derived from plants: soybean, corn, canola, and cotton seed oil. Most people are simply unaware how prevalent GM food is – in fact, around 75% of food you pick up at the supermarket will contain an ingredient that’s been modified.

But, as with anything that’s been bred in a lab or through modification, it’s just not the same. Two things are clear: GM food doesn’t offer the same nutrient content that nature intended and it simply doesn’t taste as nice. But it’s not just about nutrients and taste, there’s a deeper issue. Studies have found that GM food could damage your digestive system. Healthy bacteria in your gut is essential for healthy living – that’s why it’s important to take priobiotics to ensure that balance is maintained. Rats fed on GM potatoes that contained lectin, a sugar-binding protein that makes plants resistant to pests, developed organ damage, thickening of the small intestine and poor brain development. It gets even more curious, though, because other rats fed on organic potatoes and lectin didn’t develop the same problem – this shows that the genetic engineering process was the culprit.

Other studies have shown that GM food increases weight gain and causes digestive problems and a weakened immune system.

FOREVER FRESH?Taking peaches as an example again, a peach plucked from the tree in your grandmothers back garden would go off in a matter of days – because that’s what nature intended. But a peach bought at your local supermarket may last up to two weeks once you’ve brought it home. Something’s obviously not right. There’s an unnatural compound built into that peach that makes it last too long. Recently, scientists have discovered that insects are becoming immune to the imbedded pesticide and are once again enjoying freedom in the fields – the solution? More pesticides and more modification.

But while we’re getting more food and there’s a sense of food security in the world, the actual content of the food simply isn’t

what it was in the 1950s for example. The worldwide obesity epidemic is a testament to that – too few nutrients don’t satisfy your body’s needs and so you eat more.

GET GOOD FOODThere are ways to get back to the past for better nutrition. Although organically grown produce doesn’t abide by toxic pesticide practices, it may still be genetically modified – however, not all organic produce is the same and it usually contains higher nutrient content than mass grown produce, even if its pedigree isn’t quite as thorough as you’d like. In fact, it’s easy to tell how good organic food is because it very often isn’t uniform in size and shape, and doesn’t last as long as GM food.

Only buy organic and where possible, avoid food that contains common GM food ingredients. Also, you can grow your own. Start your own garden and purchase seeds that have not been genetically modified. Not only can you control what happens to the food you grow but you are cultivating a skill that will bless your entire family and subsequent generations. You don’t need a huge space to grow enough to sustain you and your family and in fact, you can even make use of grow boxes if you live in an apartment with no access to a garden. Start with the basics of a green salad – tomatoes, lettuce or rocket (rocket grows very fast), spring onions and flat beans.

Can we blame GM for a rising obesity problem? We look at both

sides of the GM equation and see if any alternatives exist.

You may remember as a child enjoying a juicy peach, flavour that fairly exploded in your mouth, sticky juice dribbling unchecked down your chin. You may still buy peaches when they’re in season to re-experience the joy of taste and because they’re one of nature’s nutrient rich takeaways. But are they really? Genetically modified food has pervaded every area of our lives and even organically grown produce doesn’t necessarily escape.

WHY GM?There are many good reasons that genetically modified food was developed in the first place. For a start, there’s a greater need for food to feed the billions of people on the planet – so efficiency in growth is essential. Also, insects are a problem and we’ve gone down the road of becoming incensed at crop spraying and how that negatively impacts the environment.

quality food >CHOOSE

Whether organically grown or not, there are some foods that are nutrient-packed and should be included in your diet.

Tomatoes form the base of the Mediterranean-style diet because they are so rich in lycopene which is a natural antioxidant and have been associated with heart health as well as prostate health. Include tomatoes in your daily menu.

Sweet peppers contain capsinoids which boost energy utilisation and have a role in weight management.

Grapefruit is often seen as an old-fashioned breakfast option, but it’s once again come into the limelight when scientists found a flavanoid in grapefruit is fat-burning and helps balance blood sugar levels, which assists in preventing metabolic syndrome. It works by programming the liver to burn up excess fat rather than storing it. Do be cautious about grapefruit, however, as it’s known to negatively impact with some medications.

Quinoa has been named the grain of the century by the United Nations and BBC Food calls it the perfect ingredient. It’s rich in nutrients and has a low allergy potential as well as being easily digestible.

Broccoli is known for its cancer-fighting properties, it’s a great natural detoxifier, it’s got anti-inflammatory properties and may even be able to combat allergies

Asparagus (fresh) is anti-inflammatory and filled with antioxidant power. It contains a unique carbohydrate called inulin that isn’t broken down until it gets to your large intestine, where it becomes the perfect food source for the healthy bacteria in your gut

Whole grains are an important source of fibre and whole nutrients – processed flour generally only contains the least nutritious part of the grain, so it’s all bulk and no punch.

Upgrade your H20 intake you already know that drinking water is good for your health. It keeps you energised too. Go up a notch with high quality water – ozone water, reverse osmosis, spring, mineral or filtered, find one you love the taste of and drink it out of glass or a safe bottle (one that won’t leech harmful BPAs). When purchasing water, see that it has the SABS or SANWA logo and that the label has information on the source, treatment and purity, as per the Department of Health recommendations.

Tree breakresearch consistently shows that spending time outside, surrounded by nature, will increase your energy levels. In fact, even imagining yourself in a beautiful garden, forest or natural setting can improve your vitality. As little as 20 minutes a day in a natural setting is enough to boost your energy levels.

BIG CHANGES

2013By Glenn-Douglas Haig

The common assumption that people fear change is erroneous – we do not fear change at all, what we actually fear is the loss that change might bring.

If you knew that this year would bring you big changes - but for the better - you would naturally welcome them. Imagine then, how great you would feel if you initiated the positive change in your life yourself!

We are strange and unusual creatures… We have the amazing ability to fool ourselves at every turn. One of our most common self-deceptions is that we convince ourselves that we are powerless about the things we actually DO have power over, while pretending that we have power over things we don’t!

The following statements lead to personal suffering and relationship friction: we say things like, “I can’t change jobs – my family depends on me!” or “If he really loved me, he would….”In the former, we pretend we are powerless to change jobs and in the latter we pretend we actually do have power over other people… in your experience of life, do you think this is true? Of course not!

The trick is to take the time to become aware of what you don’t have power over, and let it go, while working out what you DO have power over and taking small steps to making that happen. We are often overwhelmed by great change, or regard it as impossible to achieve, but in my 12 years of working with people and coaching them, I’ve discovered that our greatest gift is… that we CAN.

Do yourself the honour of choosing something you’d like to change this year, and experiment with tiny steps to making it happen. You’ll soon become the change you want to see. Happy 2013 everyone – The Mayan’s might have ran out of stone for their calendar, but we’re still here so we must be doing something right!

SUPPLEMENTS for energy >

Make this YOUR year

Don’t allow your ‘get up and go’ to get up and go – stay on the fast track by keeping your energy levels sustainable.

" SUPPLEMENTS for energy >

Supplements can be divided into two categories, stimulants that boost your metabolism and substances that affect the way your cells get energy from nutrients. Stimulants include caffeine, capsaicin, ginseng and bitter orange, while supplements that help your metabolism and work more efficiently include coenzyme Q10, B vitamin and amino acids such as taurine.

Other supplements that boost energy:

Asian ginseng is an adaptogen, helping you build resistance to stress and boosting energy.

Guarana contains twice the amount of caffeine per gram compared to coffee beans – but use this wisely as you don’t want to end up feeling jittery and unable to sleep.

Rhodiola has been used for many years to combat depression, fatigue and sexual dysfunction. It’s also good for boosting the immune system, enhancing athletic performance and assisting weight loss.

Kelp is considered a superfood because it’s so nutrient rich. It is high in B vitamins, essential for energy production.

Liquorice root stimulates adrenaline production, and helps regulate your blood sugar content ensuring a steady flow of energy production. Use this carefully, however, as your body can adapt to its effects.

Turmeric targets the digestive system, promoting the efficient break down and utilisation of food.

Gotu Kola is an adaptogen, helping you build resistance to stress and boosting energy.

Ashwagandha is known for its inflammatory effect, as well as increasing endurance and sexual stamina.

Astralgalus has antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can support your immune system, combat fatigue and boost energy.

did you know?Chia seeds have amazing energy boosting qualities and can be added to numerous snacks and recipes.

Hoodia controls hunger without nervousness, upset stomach, racy heart, elevated body temperature or sleep interruption. It can be safely and comfortably taken at night when snacking is most prevalent. Hoodia is perfect for anyone who struggles with hunger, cravings or portion size. It is the perfect way to control appetite while re-training eating habits. It is not a stimulant nor does it possess any thermogenic properties. Permanent weight loss usually dictates that changes in one's eating habits must take place. Unfortunately, most people find it difficult to make the necessary dietary changes when they are hungry. That is why Hoodia is so effective. A prominent manufacturer cites a clinical trial involving 18 human volunteers that found Hoodia consumption reduced food intake by about 1000 calories per day compared to a placebo group. Should be used in conjunction with a calorie controlled diet and exercise.

South Africans need more vitamins and minerals

One of my resolutions is to spend more time in Stellenbosch. I love all

the quirky arts and crafts, the uber-styled restaurants, ‘real beans’ coffee bars, the flower filled gardens fronting architectural gems and shops with personality selling authentic collectibles. So I was delighted to be invited to try out Majeka Guest house and Spa, a few minutes from the town’s centre. The first thing that struck me was the rose bushes. Every viewpoint, whether from the indoor heated pool, garden deck or designer restaurant is filled with roses. Details reveal a distinct sense of humour especially in the décor which is littered with cute pig collectibles in all sizes. There is one in the entrance, another in reception and a few hidden away in the bar, almost like an invitation to see how many you can spot.

THE GUEST HOUSE: Majeka is an owner run suburban sanctuary and

stylish escape that feels blissfully private and shut away from the world. Guests at Majeka House can choose among 300 thread-count linens in any one of the 22 rooms and enjoy in-room breakfast on their private outdoor decks. Flat screen television, free Wi-Fi access, a Lavazza coffee machine and Moya products are some of the amenities.

THE SPA: The Spa overlooks an indoor heated pool with inset Jacuzzi and sky

roof. Adjacent is a steam room and sauna. One of the features unique to Majeka house and a first in South Africa is the Himalayan Salt Crystal Treatment. This is a bed of salt crystals surrounded by light colour therapy that provides deep relaxation, combats insomnia and treats a number of dermalogical ailments like eczema and psoriasis. It is also detoxifying, toning and slimming. A menu of other options including body treatments and grooming are also available. Fluffy white gowns, excellent treatments and friendly staff complete the experience.

THE RESTAURANT: Philippe Starck signature furnishings are not the

only features of the Makaron restaurant nominated for the EatOut Top 10 restaurants in SA in 2012. Local specialities are cooked with fresh ingredients, some picked from the on-site organic garden. Organic, free range, home grown, pasture raised and biodynamic options are all on the menu. Food is served on the terrace during the summer months, and by a fireplace in winter. Head Chef Tanja Kruger was part of the team that went to Germany for the IKA Culinary Olympics last year and

brought home a silver and a bronze medal. When you sample the menu you can see why. Our amuse bouche was a citrus and soya marinated Lourensford trout, served with sour cream that came accompanied by a heated Himalayan salt block. The idea was to cook each side of the trout for 30 seconds on the block. The result was delicious. Another dish on the menu was Cauliflower Royale, sweet corn veloute, popcorn powder, popped wild rice and truffle caviar. The restaurant is also open to outside guests and is guaranteed to be an entirely memorable experience.

We tried it...

Page 12: New Beginnings

FIRST STEPS To create a green home, you don’t have to spend a fortune and start renovating with a vengeance – in fact, that goes against the whole principle of green. Make changes as and when necessary by replacing blown light bulbs with energy saver or LED lights. Recycle as much as you can and create a compost heap with discarded fruit and veg matter. Grow your own veggies, too so you can be sure of the nutritional values of the fresh produce you serve up.

Another relatively painless change to make is to go solar for your water heating. Some types of geysers can be converted to solar quite easily, and Eskom offers rebates for this conversion. Solar in South Africa is imminently sensible, so there’s certainly no excuse for not using the power of the sun. Consol has recently launched their solar jars, which give light for six hours after being charged by the sun. There are also numerous fairy light or lantern options that work on solar available all over SA.

As just about anyone in the building industry will tell you, one of the easiest and cheapest ways to conserve energy and create a comfortable home environment is to install insulation – it’s incredibly effective and can be retro-fitted. This will go a long way to creating what’s known as a passive house – in which a comfortable interior climate can be maintained without active heating and cooling systems.

BE SENSE-IBLEYour level of comfort in your home will directly affect how much time you want to spend there and although some aspects of design can be intangible, there is some wisdom in appealing to the senses.

Touch Textures and coverings are all important to feeling good. Choosing soft textures for a bedroom, for example, will ensure a feeling of nurture, while hard surfaces for a workroom may encourage efficiency. A thick carpet can give a feeling of luxury, and a wooden floor could offer natural warmth.

See The dynamic appeal of colour and light has an effect on mood and state of mind – allowing you step into the activities required in each room (for example, reds encourage appetite, while orange is

creatively stimulating). Natural light is far healthier than man-made light, so keep windows uncovered for much of the day and consider installing skylights.

Smell A stuffy home with no air isn’t at all inviting, however, a room filled with air freshener can also be stifling, not to mention toxic. Nothing beats fresh air, even when it’s cold outside, so keep windows open to allow a free flow or use an ioniser or salt lamp.

Hear Sounds can bring about a number of different reactions, from comfort to fear. Glazing is a great way to block out external sounds, but when the windows are open, it becomes null and void. Trickling water is known to be soothing, and music can affect your mood intrinsically.

DOING IT TOGETHERNow that you’ve got your home looking and feeling great, your family will probably want to spend more time there. But how do you keep the peace at all times?Good communication is essential – and that begins with listening and acknowledging everyone’s opinions and needs equally. That’s not to say everyone can do exactly as they please, but nobody likes being taken for granted or ignored. Ensure everyone is aware of expectations – if you expect your partner to always take out the dustbin when its full, but have never said so, it may not happen. You’ll end up feeling angry and your partner won’t understand why. Set up a roster so everyone gets to share in household chores like feeding the dog or setting the table.

Sharing family meals together is a great time to discuss the issues of the day and to communicate what’s going on in your lives at the moment. This will allow you to be sensitive to each other’s moods and state of mind, creating a more peaceful, loving and understanding environment. Keep the TV off during meal times and rather enjoy each other’s conversation – insert a little background music and allow everyone to share their current favourite song.

Encourage ‘me time’ for every member of the family – allow your children time to simply be by themselves (not in front of the TV) and teach everyone to respect boundaries and personal spaces.

The words green and sustainable are ubiquitous these days, but

what does that actually mean? In the 1987 Brundtland report sustainable development was defined as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”

But just how do you live environmentally aware? Well, one buzz word that’s currently trendy is ‘up-cycling’. It’s not enough anymore to recycle your plastic bags or old clothes, now you need to hang onto them and recreate their usefulness. For example,

a rag-tied carpet made from discarded plastic bags makes a very effective bath mat. Also, remember that old dress that’s sitting in your cupboard that you just can’t bear to throw out? Well, with up-cycling, you can turn it into a cushion cover or simply update it by sewing on the beads from that necklace you never wear anymore. It’s just about living aware – being more conscious of how not to be a constant consumer.

did you know?Da Vinci predicted a solar industrialization as far back as 1447 and in one hour, more sunlight falls on the earth than is used by

the entire population in one year.

Simply Green is South Africa's premier bi-monthly green lifestyle magazine, providing positive and practical steps to cleaner living for people who want to make a difference but don't want to compromise on lifestyle.

As the New Year brings fresh hope, it’s a time for us to create new energy, rethink how we have been living our lives and focus on what we want to change in our lives, which ultimately will help affect change in the world. Here are some green resolution ideas to get you ‘rethinking’ and re-doing. By Nicole Sherwin

1. Bike, Carpool or Walk to Work:Want to lose weight and help the environment? Then get your buns in gear and start walking or riding your bike to work. Another option is to invest in an electric scooter, or carpool with others from the office. Oil is peaking, and the price of gas will continue to go up. Start the transition of using your vehicle less today to get ready for the future.

2. Reuse Shopping Bags:Take your own earth-friendly bags with you to the shops. It’s a simple step that helps reduce the gallons of bags that are filling up our landfills. Remember to always put the bags back in your car after you unload.

3. Simplify Your Life: Simplify your life. How much stuff do you have in your home that you do not use? How much do you buy that you rarely use? As conscious consumers, we have to begin recognizing that resources are starting to become limited, and we need to do our part to consume less by using everything we buy.

4. Use Earth-Friendly Cleaners:Replace chemical laden cleaning supplies with eco friendly alternatives. The harmful chemicals will affect your air quality and potentially harm you and your family. These days, it’s easy to find eco-friendly cleaning supplies.

difference between then and now we see some of the culprits blamed for the extra fat we are carrying. According to Stephen Perrine, author of "New American Diet," we have all sorts of chemicals in our foods, pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics, and plastic pollutants, to name a few. He says they aren't good for the environment, they aren't good for our bodies, and they also cause you to be overweight.

Felix Grün and Bruce Blumberg from the University of California aptly coined the word Obesogens to describe these chemicals. They disrupt the function of hormonal systems, they can cause heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and high cholesterol and are found in many of the most popular foods we eat. We ingest them through artificial hormones fed to animals which we then eat, plastic pollutants from some types of food packaging; chemicals added to processed foods, and pesticides. They are also found in medication. Perrine points out that only recently the American Medical Association has come out in support of the idea that these obesogens play a significant role in the national obesity crisis. Test subjects who eliminated obesogens from food showed weight loss results of up to 6 kilos in two weeks.

Obesogens are found in: NON ORGANIC FRESH PRODUCE - Non organic peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, kale, lettuce, imported grapes, carrots and pears.

PLASTIC & CANNED CONTAINERS - In plastic compounds (in particular BPA), in the lining of canned foods (tuna, soup, beans and tomatoes) and beverages (energy drinks and baby formula) as well as sports drinks bottles.

MEAT & DAIRY WITH ARTIFICIAL HORMONES - Ten researchers from ten different Universities including Yale University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins University found the use of steroid hormones in meat production and on conventional dairy farms could be a possible contributor to the obesity epidemic.

FACTORY RAISED BEEF, CHICKEN & FISH - Unsustainable fish: farm-raised salmon and corn/soy-fed beef and chicken.

PESTICIDES – On average every day we are exposed to 10 to 13 different pesticides through food, beverages and drinking water. The majority of these pesticides have an effect on the endocrine system linked to weight gain. Another scary effect pesticides chemicals have on our bodies is that they mimic estrogen; which compromises our ability to build lean muscle and promotes fat storage.

GETTING IT RIGHT - According to a recent study in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, eating the right fruits and vegetables and avoiding the most contaminated ones, for just five days can reduce circulating pesticide-based obesogens to undetectable or near undetectable levels.

SUGAR RUSH Another fairly modern innovation is the use of high fructose corn sugar in most of the processed foods we see on the shelf. With a boom in corn farming everything from cereals, to biscuits and flour found new uses for corn including the development of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). It was two thirds the price of sugar. Corn syrup started being used in all types of processed food from pizzas, coleslaw and meat, to bread, cakes and soft drinks. It made everything sweeter, and extended shelf life from days to years. Without true public awareness, a huge amount of sugar was being pumped into food, each processed food was sweetened to appeal to taste. When the low-fat revolution happened, food with no fat was a bit tasteless and high fructose corn syrup was often used to compensate. Check the labels in low fat yoghurt, spreads, desserts and biscuits. In the mid-80s, Professor Phillip James, world-renowned health expert noticed that people were getting fatter, even those eating low fat products and exercising. In Britain in 1966 the proportion of people with a BMI of over 30 (classified as obese) was just 1.2% for men and 1.8% for women. By 1989 the figures had risen to 10.6% for men and 14.0% for women. Two things were happening. Food was full of sugar and the more sugar we ate the more we wanted. At New York University, Professor Anthony Sclafani, a nutritionist studying appetite and weight gain, noticed when lab rats ate rat food, they put on weight normally. When they ate processed food from a supermarket, they ballooned in a matter of days. Their appetite for sugary foods was insatiable: they just carried on eating.

Noeleen obviously walks her talk, no body

fat and perfect proportion makes her

programme entirely believable. Noeleen has

authored a book on the subject, “It Works for

Me!” and trains people at the Zone Fitness

Woman’s gym in the Lifestyle Centre in

Gardens. She will be giving a workshop for

parents and kids on foods to eat and foods to

avoid. For more details

email: [email protected]

Noeleen has many tips and guidance to

get on the right track, here are 10 truths

to get you started:

1. Poor nutrition can cause illness.

2. Water retention (puffiness) is caused

by high levels of toxicity. First cut

down and then eliminate foods that

contain toxins. This means all artificial

foods and sweets, including fat-free

and sugar-free, sweeteners, lite or 98%

fat-free products and processed snacks.

3. Excessive sugar, alcohol and fat (even

the right type) will lead to puffiness

and your body being waterlogged.

Avoid stimulants and artificial foods.

4. Don’t be fooled into believing that

stimulants can help you control weight.

Chocolate, tea, coffee, cigarettes and

more will all have the opposite effect.

5. Alcohol makes you fat. Highly toxic

and empty in nutrients, it requires a lot

of energy from your system to expel it

from your body. Establish a quota per

week, for example four units, and stick

to it.

6. Obesity, diabetes, drug addiction and

the consumption of stimulants are

frequent companions. This applies

even to excessive use of painkillers like

aspirin.

7. Restock your kitchen. Get rid of as

many processed foods as possible and

replace them with chemical free food.

This is a great way to avoid temptation.

8. Grow your self control by seeing if you

can eat perfectly for a day. It’s not that

difficult and practise makes it easier.

9. Although everyone is likely to divert

from their eating plan, there are clever

ways to cheat that will satisfy your

taste and keep your weight balanced.

10. Daily awareness is needed to ‘shrink’

or ‘empty’ your fat cells. Remember

the scale can show a reduction in

actual weight, but keep in mind that

an overload of carbohydrates, proteins

and/or fats will be stored in your cells

only to show in body fat in months to

come.

10 truths to get you started

During stints on the treadmill, while counting lunges, stomach

crunches and weight training she imparts a multitude of tips on eating, food and why we are fat.

“Exercise is there to control the mind and make you feel good. Sure, building muscles and burning calories is a help but if you want to lose weight and embrace health you have to address food issues,” she says.

Countless women flock to Noeleen for the revolutionary results she gets, her programme not only gets the weight off but changes the shape of bodies. Skinny legs and fat tummies on some diet and exercise programmes mean skinnier legs and

slightly less fat tummies. With Noeleen, the fat disappears from places it shouldn’t be. Regular sms’s and emails keep her students inspired and on track. Harsh truths and firm persuasion make it difficult to ignore the changes necessary to shape up.

But just what is it that makes her philosophy so successful? Noeleen is outspoken on the dangers of modern food. She speaks about how, unwittingly, all of us consume a huge amount of chemicals even in a ‘so called’ healthy diet. “It’s the chemicals that are making us fat”, she says. In particular she worries about children who, once their fat cells have been set, will most likely always struggle to keep their weight down. Where years ago most children were more on the skinny side, kids these days are much fatter. We often put this down to TV time and sedentary lifestyles but a 12 year study which began in 2000 at a Plymouth hospital

measured children's physical activity and found it the same as 50 years ago. So if it’s not the exercise, could it be the food?

More alarming research shows that food these days is not the same as it used to be. Mass production of food comes with pesticides, pollutants, chemicals and a host of ingredients that are making us fat. We wonder why, two generations ago, people used to eat dessert as a standard after dinner and these days, no one seems to get away with eating any type of dessert without it showing. Statistics show that, in Britain, the average weight is 20kg heavier now than it was in 1960. Looking at the

Are chemicals in our food making us fat?

Working out with Noeleen Bridle, motivator and trainer besides the steady physical instruction, is a real education.

Sometimes it’s back to a well-known routine, but for others it’s a new

and frightening experience. Do what you can to ease those little anxieties and ensure sustained energy and brain power throughout the day.

30

Set up a daily schedule that allows your child a good balance of time to relax, play, work, nourish and rest after school.

It’s that time of the year again when children head off to school.

31www.wellnesswarehouse.com

First time Make sure your child is prepared for the big day by regularly talking through everything that will happen. Explain that you’ll wake them up at a certain time; they’ll put on their new uniform and then have breakfast. You’ll take them to the school, find out which class they’ll be in and leave them there. After that, they’ll meet their teacher and a whole bunch of new friends. Explain that there will be break times, when they can dip into their packed lunch and play. If you’re going to fetch your child straight after school, make sure you’re precisely on time. If aftercare is necessary, talk them though what they’ll need to do once the school bell has rung the end of the day. Chat through every minute detail of what they can expect on their first day – and take a trip to the school so your little one can look around and familiarise herself with the layout. All this will go a long way in helping to ease first day jitters.

Discuss a routineAs many parents are aware, a last minute rush in the morning, searching for clean socks or a missing school tie, puts everyone’s nerves on end. Set up a school-night routine where your child packs her bag the night before and puts her uniform out, complete with socks and undies before she goes to bed. Take time each evening before dinner to talk about homework that needs to be done or any messages the teacher or school has sent. Set up a daily schedule that allows your child a good balance of time to relax, play, work, nourish and rest after school.

Listen Little anxieties may seem small to you (such as a certain boy being mean, or a lost pencil), but all these intricacies of your child’s day loom large in her heart and mind. Take time to listen to every aspect of their day and talk through their problems (perceived or real). Also take the time to meet your child’s teachers – this makes such a difference to the teacher’s ability to relate to your child and helps you to picture all the issues and joys your child will discuss with you.

Power pack Probably one of the most common staples in any child’s lunch box is a peanut butter sandwich. But, even such a delicacy can get a bit boring after a while. The trick is to ensure your child gets a decent helping of all the important ingredients to keep them going all day. To do this, include fruit and veg, grains, protein and dairy. The ubiquitous peanut butter sandwich covers two of those: grains and protein. A side snack of carrot sticks, a slice of cheese or tub of natural yoghurt and an apple will cover the others. Stick to that basic formulation, but mix it up a bit with variations like a cheese and rocket sandwich or whole wheat wrap or pita bread filled with shredded lettuce, humus, tomato and baked chicken strips. But, to ensure you give your child actual nutrition instead of just an appearance of it, stick to low GI whole grain bread, organically grown fruit and veg, and unsweetened food with no additives. Also help your child stay hydrated throughout the day with no-sugar added juice or water.

NUTRITIOUS NIBBLES

A GOOD START

4 TIPS to ease back to into school >

Add variety to the lunch box mix with these densely nutritious treats:

• Walnuts – filled with antioxidants and a great source of omega-3

• Pomegranate seeds – sweetly delicious and a fantastic antioxidant, known to have cancer protective properties

• Pistachios – these fun to eat nuts help control weight and are packed with tocopheral (antioxidant), copper, manganese and phosphorus as well as all important dietary fibre

• Apples – an apple a day does indeed keep the doctor away. Apples help to balance the microbiology of the digestive tract and are excellent for heart health

• Whole grain mini muffins – you can easily make a batch of muffins once a week, filled with antioxidant-rich cranberries and nuts or organic chocolate chips.

A healthy breakfast kick starts the body’s metabolism and helps regulate ghrelin, the hormone that increases hunger. Try to stay away from sugar-packed cereals, though, even if they are vitamin and mineral fortified – they won’t keep your little one full for very long and may cause an energy dip soon after. Rather serve up whole grain cereal or porridge and include fresh fruit and honey for added sweetness, or make a boiled egg with low GI whole grain toast.

Page 18: New Beginnings

There’s more to living longer than just stretching time, health is

essential so you can enjoy those extra years. There are numerous ways to keep the spring in your step and a sparkle in your eye, here are our ten top tips.

1. Fight the good fight Protect your body against free radicals, the atomic fragments that cause cellular destruction and metabolic waste, by supplementing with antioxidants like vitamins A, C and E, and selenium.

2. Keep fibre in mind Fibre soaks up fat and eating a high fibre diet can help improve your digestion, reduce your risk of bowel cancer, varicose veins, piles, hernia, gallstones and diabetes. Combine both insoluble fibre (found in whole grains, seeds, the skin of many fruits and vegetables, cereals, wheat and bran), and soluble fibre, which you can find in barley, citrus fruit, oats, dried beans and potatoes.

3. Be well scrubbed Up until around age 14, your skin naturally exfoliates every two weeks. Your skin naturally renews itself, giving you that young glow. As you age, this rate of natural exfoliation declines, resulting in a build up of dead skin cells, which leaves your skin looking a little dull. For your daily cleansing and moisturising routine, choose skin products that contain alpha and beta hydroxyl acids – these help promote the natural process of exfoliation.

4. Water works Keep your skin hydrated by drinking a glass of distilled or purified water every 1-2 hours that you’re awake. Add a pinch of Himalayan salt to assist in flushing out toxins from your body – this helps to keep your skin hydrated, and young looking.

5. Run from the sun Keep yourself well covered at all times when you’re out and about in the sun, especially during 10am and 3pm when the sun’s rays are harshest. Wear a sunscreen with at least a 15SPF, and if you’re wearing base, opt for a brand that offers a sun protection factor. Also, get yourself some cool shades with at least 99% UVA and UVB blocking ability to product your eyes from sun damage.

6. Don’t let people spot your age Age spots are common as you get older. Be sure they are harmless, though, before trying to get rid of them (be wary of possible melanomas by regularly checking spots with your health care professional). Three treatments that are effective are: hydroquinone which is an antioxidant that helps to break down and prevent the accumulation of browned pigment cells; kojic acid is made from mushrooms and soy and is effective in fighting against age spots; and glycurrhiza glabra is a herb that’s known to break up the clumps of brown skin cells so they are shed by the body’s natural exfoliation process.

7. Smooth those edges To remove rough skin that builds up from an accumulation of dead skin cells, use a loofah before your bath or shower. Rub the loofah in circular motions vigorously and pay extra attention to elbows, knees, back and thighs – this will also stimulate your circulation, offering better blood flow and encouraging glowing skin.

8. Keep it slick Don’t spend hours in a hot bath or shower as this can deplete your skins natural oil stores – rather bathe in warm water and pat yourself dry instead o rubbing so you can retain some moisture. Also, make an effort to always moisturise with a cream that suits your skin type.

9. Don’t let your youth go up in smoke Smoking is one of the worst things you can do for your skin (and your overall health) as it depletes your skins levels of collagen and elastin, and the repeated facial movements when dragging on a cigarette also contribute to deepened lines around the mouth and chin.

10. Breathe and relax Take time out eat day to reduce your stress levels with a session of meditation or relaxation. High levels of stress play havoc on your skin and your body’s ability to function optimally.

did you know?Sugar is considered one of the main

causes of premature aging. Excess

consumption of sugar can, over time,

cause what’s known as glycation, which is

when a sugar molecule damages a protein
