Aims and Objectives

What is the communication concept of the information society ?

How do universities as traditionally very closed institutions, limited in time and space, react on the increasing complexity and overload of information in the digital culture?

What are the challenges occurring for universities if open networking – among students and also lecturers – increasingly enters the universities?

How can the changes we are facing at present be implemented into the structure and organisation of a university?

The networked and networking society

Networking in universities – facing the shift

ePUSH – meeting the challenge of the shift

Structure of the Thesis / Line of Reasoning

The networked and networking society

What are the technological changes we are facing? Towards a technologically networked society: ARPANET, World Wide Web, „Web 2.0“

What are the social trends in the developing digital environments? - User-generated content & active participation- New forms of collaboration / Collaborative intelligence- Ubiquitous computing

How is the interdependency between media and communication?Historical review: Towards the communication concept of the computer age

How can the changing structures of communication be described? Vilém Flusser: Kommunikologie (2007)

How are the structures of collaboration changing at present?Cooperation in networks and communities - a new trend in our society?

Networking in universities – facing the shift

Structure of the Thesis / Line of Reasoning

Networking in universities - facing the shift

What challenges provides the network society for universities?“Crisis of the institutions” (Fassler 2007)

What are the communication structures of university teaching? From traditionally linear communication towards an open net dialogue

Which educational settings support the dialogic structures?Teaching and learning in Communities of Project

Example for changing educational settings within a net medium ePedagogy Design - studying in networking structures

ePUSH – meeting the challenge of the shift

How can universities act within the change described?ePUSH - a new teaching and learning culture

What is the specific situation of the Faculty IV at the University of Hamburg? Educating future teachers - for a lasting effect on teaching and learning culture

What shall be achieved on the whole with the project ePUSH?Structural change, resulting in the habitus of a new teaching and learning culture

How can open networking structures be implemented at the Faculty IV? eCommunityBuilding - open net dialogue and a sense of belonging

The networked and networking society

Central Assumptions

The communication concept of the information society seems to be characterized by an open net dialogue, embedding other forms of communication.

One characteristic of the networked and networking society is the blurring of demarcations. The importance of long-lasting cohesive systems is vanishing in favour of individualism and cooperating communities (Fassler, Castells).

Structures of communication in university teaching are tending towards dialogic structures. The still prevalent linear structures of the theatre discourse are losing in importance.

Learning in Communities of Project will be a crucial part of a new teaching and learning culture.

ePUSH – meeting the challenge of the shift

Central Assumptions

Coming students’ generations will demand different structures of communication in teaching and learning situations. Universities need to perceive the ubiquitous use of ICT as normal part of teaching and learning.

The current shift demands a rethinking towards a new teaching and learning culture.

With changing structures of communication within a new teaching and learning culture - will there be different objectives of learning?

If universities are losing their epistemic sovereignty and institutions are starting to falter - what justifies the adherence to this traditional institution?
