What is the Need?

Prolonged drought in many states

Uncertain supplies due to weather,

population growth, competition, and

contamination

Costs to secure, treat and deliver water

are rising

Efficiency remains the most cost-effective,

immediate and environmentally

beneficial way to stretch supplies and

meet customer demands in a cost-effective

way

A Voice for Water Efficiency

Opened our doors in July, 2007

The only North American organization with

the sole mission to promote the efficient

and sustainable use of water

Unites water suppliers, plumbing,

appliance and irrigation manufacturers,

advocates, government and academia

Advocacy, education, tools and research

3 stakeholder committees driving projects

400+ member organizations

AWE Goals

Be a clear and authoritative national voice

Provide comprehensive information on

products, programs, and practices

Represent the interest of efficiency in codes

and standards process

Transform the market for fixtures and

appliances

Coordinate with green building programs

Train water conservation professionals

Improve the consumer’s understanding of

need for efficiency

Conduct needed research on critical topics

Codes and Standards

1992 Federal Energy Policy Act

Fixture US Standard Maximum

Water Closets 6 liters/flush

Showerheads 9.5 liters/minute

Faucets 9.5 liters/minute

Urinals 3.8 liters/flush

Page 10: Networking event Wednesday, May 17th 2016 European ... · Costs to secure, treat and deliver water are rising Efficiency remains the most cost-effective, immediate and environmentally

More EPAct Standards

In 2005 US Energy Policy Act revised to set

efficiency Standard for pre-rinse spray valves (6

liters/minute maximum)

Standard dishwashers limited to 24.6 liters per

cycle after 1/1/2010; compact dishwashers

limited to 17 liters per cycle

Residential clothes washers must meet a

maximum water factor of 9.5 as of 1/1/2011

(Most are top loaders between 11.5 - 13)

Department of Energy authorized to specify

even stronger efficiency standards for clothes

washers in 2015 and dishwashers in 2018

How Much Do Standards Save?

Toilets alone, assuming a

4% changeout rate

Savings occur without

cost to the water utility

Savings are permanent

over the life of the fixture

68.9 million megaliters

Enough to supply New

York City, Chicago, and

Los Angeles for 20 years

3. Bill impacts of Proposed rates

Under your Proposed rates, the volume charge may go up for some customers and down or stay the same for others. The Bill Impacts Table shows the percentage of bills that will go

down, stay the same, or go up -- and by how much. Charts showing the distribution of bill impacts for each customer class are provided on the Bill Impacts worksheet.

Affordability Index

Westminster’s StoryTechnical Assistance and Resources

Citizens complained about being

asked to conserve when rates would

just go up anyway

Westminster reviewed marginal costs

for future infrastructure if conservation

had not been done

Since 1980 conservation has saved

residents and businesses 80% in tap

fees and 91% in rates compared to

what they would have been without

conservation

Creating Jobs with EfficiencyInnovation, Research and Leadership

Asks the Obama administration for

$10 billion in water efficiency

Employment potential ranges

between 15-22 jobs per million

dollars of direct investment

$10 billion can:

Boost US GDP by $13 to $15 billion

Create150,000 to 220,000 jobs

Save 6.5-10 trillion gallons of water,

with resulting energy reduction

Funding not awarded
