A WORD FROM THE EDITOR + Our routes to church
Well we certainly have a full diary during February and March, starting with Pancake Tuesday, then Valentine’s Day, through Lent and Mothering Sunday and on to Easter. We have lots planned for Lent (see Pages 16 & 17 and our diary). Have you viewed the Christian art exhibition in our church by Emma Horsefall. Its well worth a visit but be quick, it ends on 8 February (see back page). Now, like you, I was puzzled when I saw the plans for the town’s ‘Bus Gates’. How do we get to church? I contacted Kirklees Council on your behalf and eventually sorted it out (I think). Now I’ve printed their map opposite (if you can read it). The blue arrows indicate the routes into town and the red arrows indicate routes out of town, avoiding the bus gates (clear so far?). As far as I can see there are only two routes in: 1. From the ring road, go on John William Street, then down
Church Street to Byram Street. At this junction you will still able to turn left into the car parking area. However you will also now be able to turn right to the front of the church (access only). Continue then to Kirkgate and you will be allowed to turn left or right through the bus gates (yes you will! But how you get back to the church if dropping someone off could be quite a journey).
2. From Aspley direction, go up to Kingsgate, turn right on Lord Street, left on St Peter’s Street, up to John William Street, then left and follow the above.
3. From other directions eg Leeds Road, make your way up to John Williams Street etc.

Extracted from a Jodi Picoult book
In Heaven and Hell people sit at banquet tables filled with
amazing food, but no one can bend their elbows. In Hell,
everyone starves because they can’t feed themselves. In
Heaven, everyone’s stuffed, because they don’t have to bend
their arms to feed each other.
Thank you Sandra for this

Simon Says
What inspires you? What is it in this world that lightens your spirit, makes your heart
race and puts you on the top of the world? Just think for a moment….
Does music transport you to another plane? Does a good book or play or TV programme
make the day special? Perhaps it is the smile of a loved one or a good conversation. It
might be the laughter of your children, a good meal or simply a fantastic view on a long
walk.
Such a tug of our senses can quite easily be recognised as something spiritual. One of the
indicators of a sense of God is generated by such inspiration. Perhaps it is the ’still small
voice’ that Elijah experienced in the Old Testament.
At a small meeting in Aldersgate Street, London, on May 24, 1738, John Wesley had an
experience in which his "heart was strangely warmed." From this point of inspiration he
went on as an Anglican priest to form a method (‘Methodist’) of informing people’s
inspiration.
This Lent we are resourcing spirituality and growth in the individual members of our
congregation and friends. Giving opportunity for God in Jesus to touch you.
First of all there is prayer from which all our activity flows. Talked about by our church
warden Mike in the last magazine, a prayer I would ask you to use with reference to St.
Peter’s each day during Lent.
“O God who alone brings growth to your Church,
Send your Holy Spirit to give vision to our planning,
Wisdom to our actions and power to our witness.
Help our church to grow in numbers, commitment to you,
And in service to our local community,
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen”
Further, in church you will find a prayer card to use each morning, noon or evening. This
joins all our ‘God time’ and again is the foundational way of finding God with us.
Tuesday evenings we will be joining another community in prayer as we gather at the
Community of the Resurrection for compline. This activity proved very popular last year
and as with last year, lifts will be available.
There will be a wealth of resources to access yourself or by borrowing from the table at
the back of Huddersfield Parish Church. There are books, guided readings, films and
music. Each Wednesday we will be hosting guest speakers. These will be repeated at the
University of Huddersfield (see Pages 16 & 17).
7
The music chosen for lent this year is going to be used in a different way. Each Friday,
before a social gathering there is going to be a simple Mass using secular music. There
will be a ‘Classical Music’ evening, a ‘Folk’ evening, the ‘Vicar’s choice’, a
‘Contemporary’ choice. Details are on the advertisements for these evenings, with the
sources of the tracks used.
There are some practical tasks to choose from as well, from making crosses for the
Easter Stalls and a list of tasks that may be completed as part of your observance.
Take part, be inspired, be prayerful and active in your faith this Lent.
Talking to God—meeting halfway
Dear God, I'm sorry I can't attend church tomorrow. You see it's like this - Sunday falls
at the wrong part of the week. I could attend church more regularly if Sunday came at
some other time but you got it wrong when you made it where you did. Sunday comes at
the end of a hard week and I am tired out. Not only that, but it is the day following
Saturday night.
Saturday evening, as you know, is the one time I can go out and enjoy myself. When I
don't go out I like to curl up on the settee and watch television and the best programs
come on late. That means its usually midnight before I can get to bed. It is almost
impossible to get up Sunday morning, and besides, it's the only morning I can really have
a lie-in.
Then there are often jobs to be done in the house, shopping to be done, and of course
Sunday is the day that my family have the biggest dinner of the week. It wouldn't be too
bad except that the church has fixed service times to coincide with the very time I must
prepare a meal.
Then there is my husband, of course. After being cooped up in the office all week,
Sunday morning is about the only time that he can get to clean the car or mow the lawn.
You can't really expect him to change out of his old clothes into clean ones half way
through the morning, and especially if he hasn't finished his jobs.
I'm mentioning all this, just to share my viewpoint. My husband and I would like to go
to church tomorrow morning and take the youngsters with us - I'm sure it would do us all
good. I know we should go, and need to go, but it's not really our fault. Perhaps if you
selected another day it would help us all turn up to church more often.
Still, it will be Christmas next month and we always make a point of going to church at
Christmas. After all, that is the least we can do. Although I must apologise for missing
the carol service last year. You see, it was held on Christmas Eve and unfortunately that
fell on a Sunday, and as I have tried to explain ………Simon

Christian Jokes
Three young boys were walking home from school arguing over whose dad was the greatest. One said, “My dad is the greatest because he is the manager of the town bank.” The second boy said, “That is pretty good, but my dad owns two supermarkets.” The third boy said, That’s nothing; my dad’s a vicar and he owns hell. He came home last night and told mum that the PCC gave it to him!” Extracted from ‘Heavens Above’

Keep Britain Tidy is asking everyone to join in with a mass
action to clean up the country for the Queen’s 90th birthday.
The aim is to get one million people out and active during a
special weekend on 4, 5 and 6 of March.
The 5th March coincides with our March Saturday coffee
morning and the PCC has agreed to support this event. The
aim will be to have our normal coffee morning and to have a
litter pick in St. Peter’s Gardens, also to do a garden tidy of
our borders on the south side of church. We will need lots of
volunteers to host, make coffee and cakes and do the litter
pick and gardening. We plan to begin at 10am and be
finished by 2pm. Those helping with the litter pick will need
stout gloves and/or litter picking pincers.
It would be nice to have lots of
folk to help and show our
presence in the town and be seen
to be doing “our bit”. Please put
this date in your diary and if you
need further details or can help
then please speak to Mike
Bembridge.

Lent Talks at HPC and the University (see opposite)
Following last year’s successful series of Lent talks, we are expanding our
programme this year. The speakers will first be at the Parish Church, and will
then deliver another address at the University. These talks will be highly
engaging and will have some time for discussion and debate at the end. Please
put the dates in your diaries, come and support them, and invite a friend or two if
you can. The talks begin at 11am at the Church, and then 2:15 at the University.
The Speakers: Revd Dr Jonathan Pritchard has accomplished a great deal of interfaith
work in Keighley. Robin Gamble is the Diocesan Advisor for Growth and founder of
LyCiG, he is a highly engaging and provocative speaker. “The Scientists” are a group of
Christians who are also scientists in various fields. Tom Butler was Bishop of Southwark
for many years, and is a regular broadcaster on Radio 4’s “Thought for the Day”. Stuart
Townend co-wrote the hugely popular worship song, “In Christ Alone”. A song that has
caused much debate with its famous line, “the wrath of God was satisfied”.

NEWS FROM THE PCC The Diocese adviser has responded re the upgrading of the church lighting. The matter is now with the archdeacon for response. Grace has made new linens. They are now being embroided. Some electrical repair work (mainly in the Crypt) has been done and the appliances in the Keys have been PAT tested. Health and Safety policy is being reviewed. We had a positive response from sponsors of the pew bibles which are now in place on the pews. The PCC thanked David Earl for writing the dedication messages in each. The PCC are taking on board the recommendations from the LYCIG (Leading Your Church Into Growth) course which was reported on in our last issue. One thing being considered is producing a booklet of extra hymns instead of reproducing them each time in the service sheets. We, the congregation, are being asked to help create a list of favourite hymns, which are not in our usual hymn book, for inclusion. Though still in a state of lull with our building work, the PCC are busy considering various options for improving the inside areas of the church. These include the kitchen, the toilets and access to the Crypt space. Over £500 was raised at the Burns Supper Night. A good time was had by all including some dancing! Keep supporting the church and bring your friends. Try the Beer & Curry Night next (see Page 25)

Wakefield Office Church House, 1 South Parade, Wakefield, WF1 1LP Tel: 01924 371802 www.westyorkshiredales.anglican.org 11th, November, 2015 To: All PCC Secretaries, Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales At the last Leeds Diocesan Synod meeting on 17th October, 2015, two motions were passed by the Synod requesting me to write to every church in the diocese of West York-shire and the Dales to ask you to consider two issues. I am setting out below the text of the motions passed by the Diocesan Synod and would ask that you put these items on the Agenda for your next PCC meeting: Diocesan Synod motion on blood donation: “THAT this Diocesan Synod calls upon the Secretary to the Diocesan Synod to send a letter on behalf of this Diocesan Synod requesting: 1) Every church in the Leeds Diocese to encourage their members to consider as part of their Christian giving: a) becoming a blood donor; and b) registering as an organ donor upon their death and making their wishes known to their family; and 2) Churches in the Leeds Diocese to contact their local Blood Transfusion Service with a view to offering their premises as a centre for blood donation where these are suitable for such a purpose and no other local facility is currently available.” Diocesan Synod motion on the refugee crisis: “THAT this Diocesan Synod, recognising the unprecedented migration from North Africa and the Middle East into Europe and the consequent refugee crisis, calls upon the Secre-tary to the Diocesan Synod to send a letter on behalf of this Diocesan Synod requesting: that every church in the Leeds diocese considers: (a) how they might support refugees locally; (b) how they might join in the debate about refugee support in the UK; and (c) how the Leeds diocese might respond in conjunction with local authorities and chari-ties.”

Elvis to Visit the Mission Every week 1000 people visit Huddersfield Mission, some come for the many meetings that are hosted, some come for the wonderful food in our café, and some come for advice and support. On Friday 12th February we welcome Elvis to the Mission for his first visit. If you want to meet him and share in the Elvis Comedy night, then tickets are available from the Mission reception, only £7.50 or £4 for concessions.
Celebrate and Worship On Friday 11th March you are warmly invited to join us for a service of worship to celebrate the work of Huddersfield Mission. The service will include contributions from a range of people that work with Huddersfield Mission. The service starts at 11:00am.
Fairtrade Fair Last year over 400 people came to our Fairtrade Fair, so we are doing it all over again. The Mission will be open from 10-4pm on Saturday 12th March. We will have a wide range of stalls selling Fairtrade and other ethical products. Please try and support us for these three events and do tell all your friends. Can I also take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support, especially with our evening café that is running at the moment. We are serving a free meal to about 30 people every night. Thank you for your support. Paul Bridges [email protected] 01484 421461

Newsletter article Feb 16
Lent begins on February 10th with Ash Wednesday. Some may say that the best thing about Lent is the day before - Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day as it is often known today. Make no mistake about it – I love my pancakes!! BUT this is the major time of year for followers of Christ to practice self-reflection & self-examination. After all this is what Jesus was doing in the wilderness – thinking through prayerfully the way he could fulfil God’s calling to bring the kingdom into clearer focus here on earth. So this is the time to check, over a number of weeks how we are doing. There are various things that we might do in order to be reflective & practice self-control:
By making space (this may involve giving something up to do so) to spend more time with God – perhaps listening more & talking less.
By looking to see what things in our lives stand in the way of being more fully the person God wants us to be – Are we: Self-absorbed? Self-contained? Self-centred? Selfish? Self-consumed? Because this is a recipe for spiritual stagnation & deterioration & eventually destructive behaviour.
By opening ourselves up fully to the love of God in Christ Jesus. (you may find the poem ‘Let your God love you’ by Edwina Gately helpful.)
Such self-care enables us to love God & others more fully & joyfully. May you find a way to draw close to God this Lent so that Easter is all the richer when it comes.

Let Your God
Love You by
Edwina Gateley
Be silent.
Be still.
Alone.
Empty
Before your God.
Say nothing.
Ask nothing.
Be silent.
Be still.
Let your God look
upon you.
That is all.
God knows.
God understands.
God loves you
With an enormous
love,
And only wants
To look upon you
With that love.
Quiet.
Still.
Be.
Let your God —
Love you.
