A WORD FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to a bumper Christmas edition of your church magazine. I have had to add four more pages this time as there is so much to include. In

addition to the usual Christmas services we have lots of activities going on in the church during December and January as you will see as you browse through it. Try to get to some if not all of the carol concerts and the Burns night supper in January. Check out our diary on our middle pages for dates and times and keep an eye on the service sheets. Also during January, we have an exhibition of Christian art by Emma J. Horsfield (see Page 19) in the church. Happy reading,

Peter Chadwick, Magazine Editor

Simon Says

Jesus began with people, not with meetings and services. It comes as a

shock! He started where people were and His ministry was built on

relationships, his relationship to the Father and then to others whom the

Father led him to Jesus' closest followers echoed this ministry. It's worth

noting the two names given to them.

Firstly, disciples which simply means ' learners' . They learnt by being

close to Jesus, by being in his company. It would be fascinating to ask

Peter during Jesus' ministry what his job was. I think he would just point

at Jesus and say, 'I just follow ‘him’ round.'

Secondly, apostles which means ‘sent out’. After being with Jesus they

were sent out to continue Jesus' ministry.

We may not apply these terms to ourselves but I do think they say

something important about our evangelism; the way in which we speak of

God to others through the way we speak and act. Firstly, we need to be

with Jesus nourishing our relationship with him both on our own and with

others, but doing that knowing that we are also being sent out into the

world we inhabit to continue Jesus' ministry of seeking and saving the lost

(Luke 19:10).

Also like Jesus our evangelism, as Churches and individuals, needs to be

based on real relationships with those around us. Think about how

mistrustful we are of any 'cold caller' at the door, on the phone or on the

street. What's the problem? Simply we don't know them. But we will

listen to those we know who we trust and who we feel have integrity.

From the TV series, those known as the 'Friends' generation, there is a

distrust of authority but a desire for authenticity. They will not believe

because 'the church tells them to' but because of the impact of the lives of

Christians that they come into contact with. I remember the former Bishop

of Pontefract, John Finney, showed in his research that people start

following Jesus mostly because of relationships they have with Christians.

Think of the many relationships you have (not just close friendships) at

9

work, socially, in your neighbourhood, through common interests or

sports, at the school gate or the community centre. Here surely is the heart

of our and the churches evangelistic ministry. It's the places where we are

with people. Finally, there are three simple steps in relational evangelism.

1 Prayer. This reminds us that evangelism ultimately is God's work

not ours. We are called to be faithful witnesses but the life changer is only

God himself. I would encourage you to pray for those around you at work,

home, socially, etc. I find it helpful to write names down and pray for

them daily or weekly (see Colossians 4:2-3) Pray for Opportunities to

meet people and to develop relationships.

2 Care. People around us are created by God and special to Him and

hopefully to us. They are not just people we are interested in because they

might join our church. We need to show them God's love often before we

can ever talk about them. Also we need to show that our relationship with

them is not dependent on them coming to church.

3 Share. We are called to say something of the God we know. God is

not asking us to be the next Billy Graham but to be ourselves and say

simply what we know of Him. It may be at first simply saying we are a

follower of Jesus and go to a local church at an appropriate point. It is

amazing how saying something about what we believe makes us pray

even more.

'Most of those who come into Christian discipleship do so through the

everyday life and witness of friends and not through the visiting celebrity.’

Bishop Cohn Bennett

Again I pose the questions: “When did you last invite someone to a

special church service or event where the gospel was being celebrated in

some way? Who could you invite next time?”

Look at our diary and you will see such opportunity over the next month

to relate to others and to God.

Simon

Christmas Jokes

An atheist complained to a Christian friend, "You Christians have your special holidays, such as Christmas and Easter. Jews celebrate their national holidays, such as Passover and Yom Kippur. But we atheists have no recognized national holidays. It's unfair discrimination." His friend replied, "Why don't you celebrate April first?" A lady lost her handbag in the bustle of Christmas shopping. It was found by an honest little boy and returned to her. Looking in her purse, she commented, "Hmmm.... That's funny. When I lost my bag there was a £20 note in it. Now there are twenty £1 coins." The boy quickly replied, "That's right, lady. The last time I found a lady's purse, she didn't have any change for a reward."

A Note About the LYCIG Conference

LYCIG stands for “Leading Your Church into Growth” and was a

conference that the two Simons and two wardens attended at the beginning

of November at the Church Conference Centre in Swanwick, Derbyshire.

We felt that it was important to give feedback about this event to our church

family as a starting point to further work which we shall be looking at as a

church over the next few months. This is to build on work that the Stewardship

group and PCC had done during Marion’s time with us, but not to cover old

ground.

The course began on the Monday evening with an introduction and over nine

sessions detailed many aspects of “growing the Church”. It concluded on the

Thursday morning with a Eucharist ending with us taking lighted candles out of

the chapel and into the world as we were commissioned to help grow the Church.

We all enjoyed the course, the fellowship and the many conversations we had

with other clergy and lay people. The course was led by many inspirational

speakers, who had been involved in successfully growing their own churches

both spiritually and in numbers, and who had many ideas and thoughts about the

issues involved.

It was clear to us all that we have been working along the right lines for some

time and that we felt that there was much to celebrate in this respect at St Peter’s.

Examples include our style of worship and music, holding a variety of types of

service on a Sunday and during the week, our welcome and the fact that our

church is open during the weekdays for anyone who wants to come in and spend

some time out of the hurly burly of modern life. Hosting on a Saturday is also

something we should be proud of. Those of us who host will be aware of the

variety of conversations we have with our visitors during our hosting sessions.

The very successful “pop up shop” has also put the church “on the map” in the

town itself, not to mention the contact we have made with all sorts of people and

the funds raised. Our coffee mornings and fayres are examples of us having a

presence in the town centre.

One of the sessions was to look at developing a plan for growth and embedded in

this session was a useful aide memoire which is worth sharing. It was described

as the “4 Ps”.

Prayer: this suggested that all of us should pray for growth and there is a

prayer below which we ask that you use in your own prayers.

17

A Prayer For Growth O God who alone brings growth to your Church,

Send your Holy Spirit to give

Vision to our planning,

Wisdom to our actions,

And power to our witness.

Help our church to grow in numbers,

Commitment to you,

And in service to our local community,

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Presence: having a presence in the town as a church and as individuals.

Proclamation: this concerns us being able to proclaim the Good News at our

services and other events which we host.

Persuasion: this is about becoming more committed to a Christian life and

growing spiritually in the church.

We would like the whole congregation to think on these points and pray about

them. There will be other work being done by the PCC and Stewardship group to

support this initiative and we ask that you “watch this space”.

Mike Bembridge.

ART EXHIBITION

Between Wednesday 6 January and Monday 8 February, Huddersfield Parish Church

will be hosting an exhibition for Emma J. Horsfield. Her paintings are modern, vibrant

and draw us into the life of Jesus Christ, his life and ministry.

While studying for a BA (Hons) Illustration, academic research into renaissance and

medieval art served as initial inspiration for Emma, to further study the Biblical themes

artists of this era often illustrated. She now attends Church and studies the Bible and

Christian theology as well as engaging in various community projects. She also

continues to work on her degree course, book illustration commissions and fine art while

bringing up a large family.

Further, inspiration comes to Emma from Christian iconography, Medieval design,

architecture, historic events, illuminated manuscripts and humanitarian affairs. She is

particularly drawn to the ideologies of Morris and Pugin and their valuing of the hand

rendered and individual as this reflects her own way of working.

This exhibition focuses on telling a visual narrative of the life of Jesus with

accompanying books (for children and grown-ups) offering an insight which can appeal

to all visitors. A recently completed large addition to the exhibition, 'The Last Supper'

will also be part of the exhibition at Huddersfield Parish Church.

The exhibition has already toured many other venues in the last year, including Ripon

Cathedral, Selby Abbey, Wakefield Cathedral, Beverley Minster amongst others, and

will continue touring in 2016.

Pop-Up Shop / Harvest / Welcome Centre The Pop-up Shop was a resounding success, both in terms of money raised (£1855.90) and contacts made with the public. The date of the shop this year worked well in conjunction with harvest. Some left over goods from the shop, such as blankets, had been donated to the Welcome Centre, to whom we also gave a substantial amount of groceries from our Harvest Festival. The Deputy Mayor sent a letter to the Vicar, to say thanks for his welcome at the Harvest Service. The proceeds from the October Coffee Morning Plus were also donated to the Welcome Centre. The Vicar expressed thanks to all involved in the Pop-up shop with special mention of Jane and Mike Bembridge.

Town Centre Chaplaincy Today

This is a very stressful time of year if you work in the shops.

Planning for the Christmas season was well underway in August and

goods began to arrive in our shops in September. In fact the

Christmas decorations are already up in some larger stores because

it takes so long to put them up! You may well have noticed that

staffing levels are much lower than they used to be as companies

seek to maximise their profits and staff are the most expensive

resource. So spare a thought for the workers who are doing longer

hours over the next few months and who are highly likely to only get

one day off over Christmas – Christmas Day! You may also want to

browse round and encourage the many new businesses which have

been set up in town some of them in the Byram Arcade, Market Walk

and Queensgate Market. In fact a national day has been set aside to

encourage this - Small Business Saturday which is on 5th December,

when a few events will happen in town.

Since our faith has a strong emphasis on social justice, I thought it

might be helpful to clarify some information on the minimum wage.

So currently, for those 21 and over, the minimum wage is £6.70 per

hour. (For those who are 18-20 it’s £5.30, under 18 is £3.87,

apprentices is £3.30). The Joint public issues team of Baptist,

Church of Scotland, Methodist and United Reformed churches and

the Living Wage Foundation have been calling for a Living Wage for

For refreshments and a chat. Don’t forget coffee time at St Peter’s on the first Saturday every month between 10am and 2pm with stalls.

Sat 5 December and Sat 2 January

The October coffee morning raised £280 which was donated to the Welcome Centre

many years now and they are currently calling for £7.85. (All lay

employees of the Methodist Church must now be paid a minimum of

this rate). The Living Wage is calculated according to the basic cost

of living and requires someone to be able to live on it. A new ‘National

Living Wage’ is to be brought in by this government from April 2016.

It will be £7.20 an hour for workers aged 25 and older. The minimum

wage will still apply for workers aged 24 and under. I hope that this

information will help you to understand what is happening more

clearly.

Lastly, please could you pray regularly for the work of the town

centre and Marsh chaplaincies – that we might be in the right place

at the right time with the right words to offer a sensitive Christian

perspective on life.
