    General Information

    Nepal is one of the poorestcountries in the world - over45% of the population livesbeneath the poverty threshold.

    Religions : Hindu 75%,Buddhist 16%, Other 9 %.

    Mortality rates for childrenunder the age of five was 50 in 2010. There were close to amillion orphans that year,representing 3,4 % of thepopulation of Nepal. *

    Most of the orphans haveeither no mother or father, but

    there are also those who

    have no parent at all or

    whose parents can no longer

    care for them.

    They live in the orphanageand attend the local school.

    Not only young children live at theorphanage, most children are from 12

    to 18 years old.

    Phinzo and Beena Sherpahave been running theorphanage since its creation

    in 2002.

    They have been helped outby their son who is taking onmore and more responsibility

    running the orphanage.

    2011 Humanitarian Trip

    What the 2011 mission accomplished:

    18 000 USD was raised before the trip. 10 computers were brought and donated.

    Took part in work such as painting the orphanage front doors,halls and stairs of the house, purchased toiletry kits for each

    child, organized drawing sessions, music lessons and play time

    and purchased a television. They also organized a party for the

    children.

    The mission also managed to fill other needs such as supplyingclothes and shoes, vitamins and medicine, as well as purchased

    individual lockers for the children.

    Objectives Before Leaving

    1. Raise sufficient funds before leaving to cover the costs of schoolingand uniforms for the Sagarmatha children.

    2. Ecoling fundraising target: 10,000 CHF.3. Collect supplies to bring with you such as English reading books,

    new clothes, school supplies and games.

    4. Supply medicine, vitamins and other remedies that the orphanageneeds.

    5. Gifts of all sorts for the children and our Nepalese friends.6. Bring mail to sponsors and bring back mail from the children and

    friends.

    Objectives During the Stay

    1. Each student will decide, in agreement with the organizers,what humanitarian goal he or she hopes to accomplish there.2. Visit the school (the children and teenagers of Sagarmatha will

    still be in school during our stay)

    3. Present Switzerland or your life at school to the children.4. Organize outings with the orphans either on the weekend or

    on a day off.

    5. Live at the orphanage for a day or two. We will organize arotation to give everyone a chance.

    visitors). Only drink bottled

    water.
