Valentine’s Day 2015

Did you know….

Many believe the X symbol became synonymous

with the kiss in medieval times. People who

couldn't write their names signed in front of a

witness with an X. The X was then kissed to

show their sincerity.

In the Middle Ages, young men and women

drew names from a bowl to see who would be

their Valentine. They would wear this name

pinned onto their sleeves for one week for

everyone to see. This was the origin of the

expression "to wear your heart on your sleeve.

World's Tallest Roller Coaster

The Skyscraper at SKYPLEX is 570 feet tall (2 football fields high) and will feature the first Polercoaster built. The towering coaster is expected to be built not far from the soon-to-open Orlando Eye 425-foot observation wheel. The $200 million SKYPLEX will comprise approximately 495,000 square feet located on 12 prime acres. SKYPLEX will break ground in 2015 and is expected to open in 2016.

The City of Orlando will plant trees

on the city right-of-away parkway at

ABSOLUTELY NO COST! This project

will help make our neighborhood greener,

shadier and more beautiful for us & our

future generations.

The City will determine the most

appropriate tree for the location. Only

requirement is you must agree to water,

feed and care for tree until established

The City offers a choice of trees. You can

We mentioned this initiative in our last issue of Neighborhood News, but a new year

brings new beginnings & goals so let’s step-up & make a difference in our community

together!

Trees are our lifeline to cleaner air & a healthier environment. Here are a few more reasons we should all plant more trees: 1- Trees improve air quality by producing oxygen. They also store carbon, offsetting harmful byproducts of fossil-fuel burning.

2- They moderate the effects of sun and wind, and they clean the air by trapping dust, pollen and other pollutants.

3- Planted in the right places around buildings, trees can significantly reduce air-conditioning costs. This means less Freon, an inflammable and odorless chemical emitted from air conditioners. It is considered to have damaging effects to the ozone layer.

4- Trees increase property value

5- They provide shelter and food for wildlife such as birds, squirrels and bugs.

6- Trees make people feel good. Helps us relax, lower heart rates and reduce stress.

The Orlando Eye

The “Orlando Eye”, an observation wheel for the 21st century! Fashioned after the world famous London Eye erected in London for the Millennial celebration, the Orlando Eye will afford locals, conventioneers and visiting families breath-taking views of the city and the surrounding areas. The wheel will be 400 feet tall, the tallest observation wheel on the East Coast. Set to open spring 2015.

Dragon Parade Lunar New Year Festival

in Orlando to celebrate the “Year of the Sheep”

The festival starts February 22nd at

11am with a community parade followed

by a 5-hour fair which takes place in the

Orlando Fashion Square Mall. Admission

is free. The fair contains some of the most

exciting cultural performances, exotic

Asian food, delightful arts and crafts and

exhibitions. Dragon Parade is, as of now,

Leu Gardens will be kicking off the 2015 season with Ribbit the Exhibit, an exciting outdoor display that will captivate the entire community. This whimsical display, featuring twenty human-sized sculptures located throughout the Gardens, will be a family-friendly event to enliven our Gardens and excite families about our environment.
