From the Administrator’s Desk THE WINTER MONTHS are here and we are all battling the cold together. This fourth quarter has been extremely busy for all of us at The Neighborhoods. We had a wonderful turnout for our Halloween party in October. We had over 300 kids show up to Trick-or-Treat through our households. The residents had a blast handing out candy to all of the ghosts and goblins. In November we had an amazing turnout for our Thanksgiving feast. It is so nice to have the space available for our residents to enjoy a special meal with their families on these occasions. Our Christmas meal was successful as well. We had over 150 guests come through the doors to eat with their loved ones. The staff did a wonderful job decorating the facility to make it a special time for our residents. Twice a year (June and Dec) we conduct our resident/family satisfaction surveys. I just received the results from our most recent survey and we scored exceptionally well. We received a 93% Recommendation to Others rating, and a 95% Overall Satisfaction rating. These scores reflect the top-notch care that we deliver on a daily basis and I am so proud to be a part of this award winning facility. I want to thank everyone who took the time to fill out these surveys because they are extremely important to us. In closing, I want to wish everyone a safe and prosperous 2015. God Bless! The Neighborhoods at Brookview

The blusTery winTer monThs have caused us to stay indoors, more than some residents and staff prefer! But even though we’ve all been cooped up inside, the residents have kept busy with both independent and group activities and events. The holidays came and went and a lot of residents blessed to spend some time with family and friends. We served over 100 guests for Thanksgiving and about that many for Christmas as well. It is always so nice to see the building filled with family and friends around holiday times.

This year we held our third annual Resident Christmas Store. This “store” is a place for each resident to come and “shop” for gifts for their families and friends. These gifts are all free to the residents as not many have the extra money or the ability to go out and shop at the stores for gifts. They take great pride in being able to have a wrapped present for someone at Christmas. This year we were blessed with an over abundance of gifts from different organizations, families and fellow Brookings Health System employees! All of the donated gifts were gently used or new items. We had enough for the store to be held two days, and many of the residents were able to come back numerous times to get gifts. This year we had a wrapping station. Once the residents were through shopping, they were able to stop and have their gift

wrapped before heading back to their household. This was a huge success. It is always a great feeling to see the excitement and joy on residents faces when they are able to give something to their family member….truly makes my job that much more great!

Another exciting tidbit is that we concluded our yearly quilt raffle drawing with proceeds bring in just under $600 for the activity fund. The winner of this year’s quilt was Bob Groon from Arlington, S.D. Both Bob and his wife were pretty excited to get the phone call to let them know he (or SHE on the other hand) had won! Thanks again to all that took part in another great fundraiser for the activity fund!

The 17th of January will bring another first for The Neighborhoods as we are hosting an after Christmas resident/family Winter Wonderland party. This will give families and friends an opportunity to come in and spend an afternoon with their loved one, listen to the Karaoke Krooner, and enjoy some goodies. The party will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the Town Center. All are invited to attend.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season, and I wish nothing but the best for each and every one of you in 2015! Happy New Year!!

Holiday Happenings from Elm Pass and Pine Trailwe sure have a fun group of residents on Elm and Pine. Just like the saying goes, ”We are all one big happy family.” Again this year the residents enjoyed assisting staff in decorating for Christmas. From floofing the branches on the trees to sitting and drinking a cup of coffee while listening to Christmas carols to watching staff put the lights up, fun was had by all. We are blessed to have a great group of staff that were all willing to take part in a SECRET SANTA party for the residents. On December 18th, we had a resident/staff Secret Santa Christmas party with ALL the residents from Elm and Pine coming out of their rooms to attend. The best part of this party was that we had a special guest in attendance. SANTA himself came to personally hand out each present to the residents. It was pure joy to watch the residents’ faces

light up when Santa walked in. Staff came in on their day off to enjoy fun times, good food and to watch the excitement on the residents’ faces when each and every one of them got a gift! One of the staff members made the comment that this was the best Christmas party at work she has been to in over 30 years! The excitement seems to never end on Elm and Pine.

With the new year here already, we look forward to many more fun events, outings, memories, and more to be made in the months to come. I hope you all had as wonderful a holiday season as we did on Elm and Pine.

Hello from Oak Lane and Birch Way!The residenTs on Oak/Birch Neighborhood have had the privilege of having the SDSU student nurses work with them on several occasions this fall.

In October one of the student groups put on a tail gate party, playing games and doing exercises with the residents. The residents enjoyed a dinner of hot dogs, salad and chocolate bananas.

In November a different group of SDSU nursing students were here. This group of students chose a Thanksgiving theme for their day of fun with the residents. During the morning of Nov. 12, the SDSU student nurses did several

Thank you SDSU nursing students for taking the time out of your busy schedules to talk and provide fun activities for our residents here at The Neighborhoods at Brookview.

activities with the residents. First they made turkeys using candy corn, chocolate kisses and almond bark. They creations turned out very cute. Their next event was to share about what Thanksgiving meant to them and what they were thankful for. They wrote their words of thanks on turkey feathers from their hand print. They gathered all the feathers together and made a giant turkey. They ended the morning by doing exercises to music. The residents enjoyed a pumpkin dessert for dinner.

The Oak/Birch residents would like to give the SDSU nursing students a great big thanks for the help and good times.

Favorite Holiday Memories from Maple Ridge and Ash Boulevard“receiving a large dollhouse and furniture as a gift to go with the dolls I already had.”

“As a struggling single mother, having a neighbor surprise me with a large, white Bible and then coming home one day to find a white, decorated and lit Christmas tree set up with groceries and gifts underneath!”

“My favorite present was a toy thrashing machine and tractor. I played with it for years!”

Other fond memories are Christmas goodies, time spent with children and family, snow on Christmas Eve, ice skating and a free Christmas show with Santa Clause handing out presents for the children.
